Client Disk error - Backup Procedures et al
Hello!
This is not directly a "server" question but I am thinking it is the best place to post, given the apple discussion options.
I'm a small home business with my main two computers being a MacBookPro and a MacMini SnowLeopard Server (RAID1). My MacMini Server is a fresh install that I got up and running yesterday. I decided to format that drive into RAID1 to help protect against drive failure and to keep up time as good as possible.
Ironically, on my LapTop, I started noticing apps hanging from time to time and then disk errors in the console that corresponded to the hanging. This laptop is still under warranty, but I'm not sure what to do at this point. So, I thought I'd post my situation/ideas to this list to see what you guys think.
First thought is that I will need to do a backup. I am a bit torn on how best to do this because my HD is partitioned into 3 volumes (2 different OS's and 1 'temp' storage area). It's a 500Gb drive with about half still available between the 3 partitions. So.. how best to get a complete backup? Well, I thought about a disk image.. but I've never created one.
Is there a way I can create a disk image and save it to my macmini server? Would this disk image capture all 3 partitions or would it capture only the OS partition?
After I get a good backup in place, I then have to decide if I want to reformat or go visit a "genius" for a new drive perhaps.
Thanks for your comments!
Donovan
First: Boot from a live-cd, to prevent unnecessary mounting of your disks (System Rescue CD comes with ddrescue).
"dd" is usually recommended for imaging. However, you might want to take a look at ddrescue instead. ddrescue is more resistant to read-errors, and I higly recommend using its log-feature - Take a look at its homepage.
Here's a bit more about imaging hard drives with ddrescue.
NB: There is another program called dd_rescue, which I have no experience with.

Disk Error Midway through a Backup
I am about to upgrade to Windows Vista, before doing so I wanted to Backup my itunes Library. Everything was going fine with the backup until I hit disk 5 (out of 6). Prior to it being finished I encountered a disk error, itunes gave me the option of canceling the burn or just continuing on to disk 6. I choose to continue.
My question is, is there an easy way for me to create just the disk 5 of the backup? I don't want to have to reburn the whole BackUp series, since it appears all the other disks were able to finish without a problem. The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

Hi, I'm baaaaaaack!
I have a new (replacement) Netware 6.5 SP8 server running Groupwise,
with 4 RAID'ed 450GB 10K SAS drives giving me about 1.2TB of space. In
keeping things arranged close to the way they were before I arrived, for
now at least, I have a "DATA_POOL" which holds "SYS2" volume. During
nightly backups, since the new server went in about 12 days ago, I'm
getting backups failing, and eventually the SYS2 volume dismounted last
weekend during the full backup.
I tried doing a poolrebuild even though poolverify showed no errors, per
Symantec & Novell documentation, and that didn't suffice. Had to do the
"purge" rebuild, and then was able to re-mount the volume. I wasn't
sure if the error was somehow related to the server migration, so I
tried the same full backup again and got the same nasty results.
Rebuilt again, and made some changes to the OFMCDM.CFG file as
recommended in some Symantec documentation, and the backups have been
succeeding.
However, the logs show lots of entries like the following, still, always
during the backups:
3-08-2011 9:43:15 pm: COMN-3.26-178
Severity = 5 Locus = 3 Class = 0
NSS-2.70-5009: Pool AIRP_COMM/DATA_POOL_SP had an error
(20012(beastTree.c[510])) at block 129200397(file block
-129200397)(ZID 1).
3-08-2011 9:43:15 pm: COMN-3.26-180
Severity = 5 Locus = 3 Class = 0
NSS-2.70-5008: Volume AIRP_COMM/SYS2_SV had an error
(20012(beastTree.c[510])) at block 129200397(file block
-129200397)(ZID 1).
It's not clear to me if this means it *has* to be a disk drive error.
New disks would seem to increase the likelihood of physical disk
failure, but it only happens during the Backup Exec 9.2 backups of this
volume, and never on the SYS volume during those same backups.
The Groupwise total database is about 100GB, and the total volume space
is about 800GB, if that matters. (This server is built to GROW.)
Suggestions? Does this clearly point to a hardware (disk) error even
though it only happens during backups, and the symptoms changed when I
made the OFM configuration changes?
The changes I made to OFMCDM.CFG were:
InitialCacheSize = 0x0000000000400000 (was 200000)
CacheSizeExpandThreshold = 0x30 (was 0x1e)
The old server didn't have any problems backing up, and everything was
brought over intact/identical in configuration, even though the above
changes did seem to help somewhat. I'm posting here because this seems
more of a "storage" (disk) issue than really a backup issue, despite the
failures occurring during backups.
Any suggestions, or clarification about the above cause & possible fixes?
Thanks.
-- DEThanks, but I don't know of any way to back up Groupwise without using
OFM; you just can't get the data if you do that because so many
important files are open. And I do agree that it's OFM if it is not a
hardware issue.
Your entries under "device" look like the defaults, which I started
with, and yet there are a bunch of references on the Symantec (Backup
Exec) site which suggest changing those. But I will want to compare
your entries with mine, higher in the file, to see if there is any
particular setting that is non-default and might address the issue.
I do have slots for a spare drive on this new server. Currently, the
cache is directed to the very same volume that is having issues,
although it worked fine that way in the past on the old server. But I
can easily get another drive if that will resolve this.
Thanks.

Time Machine could not complete the backup "Time Capsule". Unable to access disk image backup "/ Volumes / Time Capsule / iMac.sparsebundle" (error 112).

Time Machine error: backup disk image could not be created
Iet up my new time capsule day and it's working great. Now that I've got everything sorted out, I'm ready to do the initial time machine back up on it. I went into preferences, changed the backup location to my TC and clicked 'back up now'. Very quickly I get a message that the backup failed: "Time Machine Error - The backup disk image could not be created".
I've searched the apple support area but haven't been able to figure this one out. Can anyone help, please? This is an initial backup. (FYI, it worked great on my old external drive.)
Many thanksI had the same problem. I installed my Time Capsule, fired up Time Machine and got an error that said "The backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 436.8 GB but only 182.2GB are available."
Coincidently, these are the same sizes as the space used and the space available on my iMac's drive.
I looked in /Volumes and saw that the sparsebundle was being created on the local disk and not on the main disk. Trying to backup again gave me the "Time Machine error: backup disk image could not be created." message.
I poked around the forums, and found a post about the machine name setting in sharing. I decided to give it a look, and lo and behold, I did not have a machine name. So I gave my box a name, kicked off Time Machine again, and it worked. -
The last date of my back up was 10/4- keeps saying The backup disk image "/backup disk image "/Volumes/time Capsule/ cheryl lynott's MacBook.sparsebundle" is already in use?
HELP -- what does this mean -- .......
Often, this error can be corrected by pulling the power on the Time Capsule, waiting a few minutes, and powering the Time Capsule back up.

Disk Error and Time Machine Backup
I have a 2011 Mac Book Pro which has been running sluggish recently especially with Final Cut Pro X. I have 8gb memory so couldn't fathom out why. Yesterday Time Machine also wouldn't backup either automatically or manually. Today I ran Disk Utilities and it told me that I had a disk error which couldn't be rectified meaning that I would have to reformat my disk. I have read Apple's documentation on reformatting and taken separate backups of important data. However I'm wondering after reformatting is it safe to restore from a TM backup or is it better to reinstall all my apps (and I have a lot installed). Does the disk error get transferred across to the TM backup as well?
Thanking you

My Mac mini time capsule is showing an error Time machine error, backup disk image "/volumes/data-1/.sparesbundle " already in use. I don;t know what this means, can someone help?
I had a similar problem and I solved it as follows -
In Time Machine - > I deselected time capsule Data Disk as a destination.
Then I pulled the power plug on the Time Capsule, twiddled my thumbs for 15 secs, plugged the power back in.
Went back t Time Machine -> Re-Added the Time Capsule Data Disk as destination. And then tested by selecting Backup Now.
All went well and the backup picked up from before the problem.
BTW - I also have a USB drive connected to Time Capsule that is an alternate disk for Time Machine to backup.
In Mountain Lion the GUI lets you add more than one Time Machine backup destinations very easily so I think it a good idea to have redundancy.
Hope this helps. -
Windows in Leopard: solving disk error and formatting as NTFS
Hi,
I'll post here a link to a solution I found on an australian forum
(http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=848369&p=-1#bottom).
Look to Malcolm Burtenshaw posts and follow his procedure.
It worked fine for me and solved all my problems; I higly recommend it.
Good luck!I have also been having serious issues, and this worked for me also. Before (In Leopard with BootCamp 2.0) I could partition ok, and everything else, but the Windows installer just wouldn't give me the option of reformatting the drive (formatted to FAT32 by BootCamp v. 2) to NTFS. To re-iterate, if you're having these DISK ERROR problems, do the following:
Backup all files
Use Leopard/Tiger install disk to wipe the entire hard drive (all volumes mac and pc) with Disk Utility (this may not be necessary, but it could clear up the problem)
Install Tiger (10.4)
Run Bootcamp (in Tiger), partition, install Windows, and install drivers
Install Leopard (you may choose "erase" within the Installer since this will just wipe the Mac partition)
Now you're good to go. For running Bootcamp on Tiger, you will need to download BootCamp beta 1.4, there is at least one mirror (and a 1.3 one too) that you can easily find with google. Also, if you're having trouble installing with the beta after December 2007, try setting back the clock and disconnecting from the Internet.
Although it is very strange that Bootcamp 2.0 (or Leopard) have broken the ability to install. -
Spinning wheel, iMac, EtreCheck, AdAware, disk errors
I have been using Macs at home, PCs at work, for decades, but am not a techie. I am currently having a problem with my home iMac (bought in 2011). About 2 weeks ago I began to notice that I was getting the spinning colored wheel on occasion. I use Office for Macs and about a month ago started using a budgeting software called YNAB, everything else pretty standard, I think. Today the spinning wheel has gotten dramatically worse -- it happens with just about every click, on every application, lasting maybe 20 - 90 seconds and then the machine executes the command(s). I checked multiple user forums including this one. I checked the activity monitor and didn't see anything obviously wrong (nothing running > ~ 15% of CPU; when getting the spinning wheel the current application shows up in the monitor as "not responding,") but I am not sure what else to look for. I downloaded and ran EtreCheck after seeing it on multiple posts here. The report follows. The stuff in red looks suspicious but before I go any farther I thought I'd check with the big guns. Suggestions welcome, many thanks.

No Disk error Messages in PSE8
On and off I keep getting the following error message when I switch between Edit and Orgainzier in PSE8
and sometime other times. Photoshop ElementsOrgainzer.exe-No Disk There is no disk in the
drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk4\DR4.
I have to hit Cancel 3-4 times to get rid of it.
What is this and how do I stop it? Tks. ALanI have recently experienced this message repeatedly in PSE6 running on Vista. I believe after either saving a file from PSE6 to a floppy in drive A or opening a file in PSE6 from an SD memory card in drive J. Resolved by recreating both situations then ensuring that i used photoshop to open files from and save files to the resident C drive before removing the floppy disk from drive A and using the 'safely remove hardware' function in Vista to confirm that it was safe to remove the SD card.
Following this procedure I have experienced no more 'no disk error messages' -
I recently tried to upgrade my macbook pro OSX to mountain lion via the app store. When it tried to install it gives me a disk error. I have run disk utilities and repaired, verified etc. but it makes no difference. I am running bootcamp as well and have tried to modifiy the partition sizes in disk utilities, but it says for both that they cannot be modified. I can switch my startup disk and reboot in windows, no problem, so getting my files off isnt the issue. I have also tried to recover the hard disk using time machine which i was lucky enough to backup the day before it all went wrong. However, time machine runs fine until it asks me which disk to recover and it gives me an option of the time machine disk or bootcamp, but no option for my mac partition. So, I have tried everything that makes snese, but getting errors with disks lock, cant repartition, disk error needs repair (which i know is not true, its only because of the Mountain Lion OSX that its messed up). Any ideas?
You have some other problem with your boot drive that has corrupted data backed up to the TimeMacine drive.
My advice is to boot into each operating system and manually backup just your Users files each to separate regular external drives (no Timemachine or backup software) and disconnect.
Make a note of any serial numbers, emails, address book contacts, export bookmarks etc. that isn't typically in your users folders data.
You might be able to Winclone 3 the Windows as a whole thing as it's appearing not to have issues but it's your MacintoshHD partition that is so that will have to be rebuilt from scratch.
Most commonly used backup methods
If your OS X parititon doesn't boot, you can use this to recover files.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Without any further detail about your machine I can't advise specifically what to do, but it involves using Disk Utility to Zero Erase (move slider one spot to the right or in 10.6 using Security Option) the ENTIRE boot drive and reformatting, then installing OSX fresh and then setting up BootCamp again.
If you wish to switch your boot drive for something better, this is a good time to do this.
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
If your machine is capable of Internet Recovery, then use that, then upgrade.
If your machine came with 10.6 or earlier, then use the 10.6 install disks and work up from there.
Erase, formatting, OS X installs on Mac's -
What is causing a disk error when saving psd files or writing to cache?
The problem only happens when running Photoshop CC (2104) and Bridge (actually these are the only two programs I really use my external drive for) during a save or write operation to an external hard drive. I can work for hours, with multiple files open, saving, creating, etc. without a problem and then suddenly I'll get a message from Photoshop saying, "Could not save .... because of a disk error." or from Bridge saying, ".. unable to write to cache..".
When I quit and try to troubleshoot the problem, I find that, for some reason, Mavericks has put system files on my external (non boot) drive or, for whatever reason, thinks there is a system file on it. Consequently, the drive cannot be ejected (Error message: "... one or more programs may be using it...") and I cannot repair it using Disk Utility (Error message: " ... live file system repair is not supported"). I also cannot write to it (Error message: "... unexpected disk error has occurred (error code: -50)"). The problem persists even after quitting all other programs, which wouldn't surprise me if Mavericks thinks there is a system file on it.
I have force ejected the drive a couple of times but became concerned that I might be compounding the problem. Now I just restart my computer and run Disk Utility Repair Disk. (Don't know which is worse.) Disk Utility either doesn't find a problem or, if it finds one, it repairs it. After that, Photoshop and Bridge work fine for a while.
System information:
MacBook Pro 13" 2.4GHz with 16GB RAM, 500 GB HD (recently upgraded)
Apple Cinema Display
Mavericks (up to date)
G-Technology G-Drive (Gen 5) 2TB HD connected via Firewire 800 (latest firmware)
Unconfirmed observation: I believe the first few times this problem occurred, Firefox was up an running. I made a point of quitting all programs except System Monitor when running Photoshop and Bridge and I can't remember having the problem again. The the last time the issue occurred, today, however, Safari was up and running.
Is this an OS problem, a hardware (disk drive, cable, etc.) problem, a software problem (PS, Bridge) or some combination? I have put this much detail in the post hoping someone can share some insight into the cause. I will be sending this report to Apple and G-Technology and I will report any resolution, if and, hopefully when, I find one.The only thing that will cause a disk error is an actual error from the disk.
Photoshop is just telling you what that OS told it about the error.
It sounds like you need to boot off another disk and try to repair your disk.
Also, make sure you have a backup. And check the SMART status to see if it is failing and needs to be replaced. -
I have had this computer since August 2012. I have recently been getting a "No bootable disk" error when starting/restarting. I hold down the option key, select the SSD, and it boots normally. The first time it happened I kinda freaked, now it just ****** me off. It is NOT something that should happen on a machine as new and pricey as this thing is.
Anybody else heving this issue?Try to restart the system while holding down the OPTIONS key. This should allow access to the recovery partition. Select recovery and boot from that partition and use the disk utilities app to see if it can fix any disk error. after that try to reboot normally. If there is still a problem you might try to reinstall the OS fresh - I hope you have been making regular backups of your data with Time Capsule, a back up drive or cloud. These are the first steps I'd take, but then it might be a hardware failure of your drive. Use the Apple Hardware on your install DVD to check the drive. If the drive has failed, you can repace it yorself or take it in for Apple Service. I recently replaced my drive with a Seagate Blue 1TB 5400 RPM drive in my mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro (5,5) and it works great!
