Client Macs lose connection to server after Sleep

Ok, so my previous issues with disk I/O erroros with contacts/Mail etc appears to be resolved after I re-installed ML Server and ML clients on all my macs -- not entirely sure why but now I have new problem where client macs lose connection to the server after sleep
So my current setup is as follows:
Server Mac
Mac Mini Server running ML 10.8.2 Server
Client Macs
2 x MBAs with 10.8.2 (Core2Duo & iCore5)
1 x Mac Mini running 10.8.2 (Core2Due, 4GB 2.4 Ghz etc)
Issue:
If I leave the client Mini logged in say, as me and either the mini goes to sleep (or if I put it to sleep) and then I wake the mini up, I appear to lose connection to the server - so whilst I am still logged in as me, I've lost my connection to my home directory e.g. Doc/Music/Pics (I can see instantly my desktop picture defaults to ML galaxy picture, opposed to something I've chosen) folders are no longer present. So obviously as mailbox, iphoto & itunes libraries are missing, Mail, iPhoto & iTunes fail to operate and I my only course of action is to log out and log back in and everything is fine.
I get the same issue - although not as frequent - on MBA's when you close it and results in having to log out and in again to resolve the issue. I also saw the same problem when it was running Lion as well.
A couple of things to note:
  - Server Mini is never asleep and is running 24x7 (as its a media streamer as well)
  - Its only occured when in deep sleep -  so if I wake the mac up after a few seconds of sleep, its just fine but if say I leave it overnight and wake it in the morning, its no longer connected.
Any pointers will be welcome and given that it appear to have occured on a client Mac with Lion as well, it would imply its an issue with the server rather the individual client Macs. Also note, I don;t recall the problem when running Lion Server.
Thanks
Rob

Have you tried looking at the server logs, particularly the 'System' & 'Open Directory' log sets?
Anything seen in there?
Also logs on the client machines using the Console app. It's a bit tedious going though logs but they can be very illuminating.

  • MacBook Pro loses connection to Internet after sleep using Airport Time Capsule

I recently upgraded to Mavricks and then added a new Airport Time Capsule, and now I my MBP will not connect to the wireless LAN after waking up from sleep mode.  My MBP worked great for over a year with an non-Apple router, so I am thinking that there is a new Apple computer-to-Apple Router issue going on. Any thoughts, suggestions?
I read all the threads and have followed all the simple advice, such as making sure the Airport is at the top of the network priority list, etc, to no avail.  I end up having to reboot my MBP to get reconnected, which is super frustrating.

    Hello ghesser,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro after setting up your Time Capsule.  I would be concerned about this too.
I recommed reviewing the full article and specifically the section labeled, "Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly" in the following article to resolve an issue like the one you described:

  • Garageband Loses Connection With Keyboard After Sleep Mode

Whenever I open Garageband after my PowerBook G4 15" has been in sleep mode, my connection with my digital keyboard is lost (unable to record). I have to restart the computer in order to get the connection back. Any suggestions on what might be happening here and how to resolve this problem?
I noticed several other posts under "Internet Connections" where people are losing their internet connection after coming out of sleep mode (I am also experiencing this problem as well). Could these two problems be related? I never had either of these problems until recently. Could it have anything to do with recent Mac OSX software updates or iLife '08 updates?
    Thanks. Rick.

have you tried simply unplugging and re-plugging-in the keyboard rather than a reboot?

I would suggest you try opening "Mail">click on "Mailboxes" in the Menu Bar> and select "Rebuild" from the list.  That may solve it.

Hello. My mac pro early 2008 restarts after sleep mode and it works slower. I tested it with apple hardwear test and it seems to be ok. Thank you.

    Try this:
clone your system and repair it with Disk Warrior instead
Or try a clean test system install on another drive
A must: SmcFanControl 2.2 - a mere 400 rpm extra to keep air cooling up
Try to run w/o externals. MyBook included.
Is that a 7200.11 1TB? they had a lot of issues.
Run AHT off your OEM DVD.
2008 had to have EFI and SMC updates to deal with freezes on wake from sleep, and like all models, high inrush current.  Hopefully you have a UPS and is 1500VA unit.
When you do hard restart from power button, you almost certainly add more directory errors and to files requiring immediate attention to repair and rebuild the directory; and to scan and repair and delete cache and temp files and folders. A must. Invest in bootable backups SuperDuper along with Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro 6, maybe Drive Genius 3 but I'd rate that #3).
TimeMachine has its own bad habits, especially with Green drives and some externals.
Try to rule out everything and then add back one at a time.
And it may just be time to replace the 8800, very common, a couple threads this week, and it is 3 yrs old.  Might want ATI 5870 or 5770.

I have to reboot everytime it wakes up after sleep. Any clue?

I am having the exact same problem.  It started with 10.7, was fixed with 10.7.1, then came back again with 10.7.2.

  • OS X 10.7.2 very slow to connect to internet after sleep

Following the lates round of updates and firmware updates MacBook Pro Running 10.7.2 is very difficult to connect to internet after sleep. Network diagnostics show all is fine, all the IP's DNS etc WiFi are fine Safari just won't connect. Was fine before updates

I have had this same problem since I updated to lion. I used to connect straight away. Now it takes at least 10sec.
Have noticed a few anoying bugs with lion. The other thing that somtimes happens to me is it crashing when running some programes ( iphoto '08, BBC iplayer desctop etc... ) and also when browsing some sites (quite alot on youtube)
Really hope these are sorted on the next update.

  • Mac mini loses mouse and keyboard after sleep.

    Hi Everyone:
I recently bought my Mom one of the new Mac mini (I'm a PowerBook user myself), and she's running into some puzzling problems which, while minor, are sufficiently annoying as to confuse poor old Mom.
The system egnrally runs fine after you turn it on, until it goes to sleep. After some undefined period in sleep mode, the Mac mini appears to "lose" the USB keyboard and mouse which is plugged into it. If you press a mouse button or a keyboard key a few minutes within the system going to sleep, the system will wake up and both will work. If you wait a longer period of time (say, 20 minutes or longer, although I haven't sat and timed it at all), pressing any key or mouse button does nothing, and you have to wake it from sleep by using the power button. Once awake, the keyboard and mouse do nothing. The only way to get them back is to unplug both of them (the mouse is chained through the keyboard as the other Mac mini USB slot is used by Mom's UPS), and plug them back in so the Mac mini can re-detect them on the bus, after which everything is happy again until the system has been asleep for too long.
Has anyone experienced this? Both the mouse and keyboard are genuine IBM (as in: made by International Business Machines), although are several years old (I bought them when I worked for IBM, and IIRC they were amongst the first models of USB keyboards and mice that IBM offered, if not the first).
In the interm, I've lent Mom my Apple Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, which has (as you would expect) worked flawlessly. This problem may "solve" itself -- I'm hoping to take Mom out later this week to buy her own Apple Bluetooth mouse and keyboard at the Apple Store.
The other problem, however, isn't as easy (or necessarily as cheap) to fix. Again after the system has been asleep for some time, it often (but not always) changing the resolution of the monitor when it wakes up. I have the mini set to use a reasonable 1024*768, but sometimes when it awakes it will suddenly be set to 800*600 or 832*624. Sure, you can change it back, but that's major surgury for Mom (and I'm moving cross-country next week, and won't be able to just "drop by" to fix system problems). The monitor is an Ambra SVGA model (Ambra was a brand-name of inexpensive PCs that IBM sold some years ago), and never had any such problems on her last (Intel-based) system the mini is replacing.
The whole purpose of the Mac mini is to "bring your own" Keyboard, Mouse, and Monitor -- but in our case the keyboard and mouse don't work at all after sleep, and the monitors resolution gets dynamically changed after sleep. Has anyone else encountered this situations, or any solutions? TIA!
    Brad BARCLAY

    Hey Jan:
I've seen quite a few posts in this regard with non-Apple mice and keyboard.
Well, the mouse and keyboard are quite old -- it could be that they're having a problem dealing with identifying themselves on the USB bus during sleep, or aren't identifying themselves fast enough at wake time. I'll just have to replace them I guess.
I've never seen a sleep resolution switching problem except on a VGA adapter to DVI connection to an old tube monitor.
Well, this is a pretty vanilla CRT monitor circa about 1999, so yeah -- it could once again be an age issue, and the fact that there is a DVI -> VGA adapter involved in the middle.
For worrying about fixing Mom's Mac, setup her remote VNC software (Apple Remote Desktop Client) and use the free Chicken of the VNC admin program.
I am quite familiar with VNC. As much admin as possible will be done by SSH, but I will have VNC in place before I leave. The big problem is going to be the fact that I'm going to be several timezones (and over 4000 km) away, so I won't necessarily be available at a moments notice to help her with this sort of thing.
The CRT issue we might just have to deal with by having her always run it at 800*600 (I don't think she'd really notice the difference, and as her eyes aren't what they once used to be, the slight size increase may be more confortable for her in the long run) until such time they she can afford to buy a nicer display (I did my duty as a son buying her the Mac mini and an iSight camera -- she has to take care of the rest ).
    Yaz.

  • Outlook Mac Loses Connection to Exchange Server

    Hi All,
I've had this problem pretty since deployment a couple of weeks ago, so I'm hoping some one can point me in the right direction.  I'm running Exchange 2013 on a Server 2012 Standard box with the DC running on a different box, every thing up to date.
Mac clients running Outlook 2011 (14.4.2).
Periodically throughout the day, Outlook loses connection to Exchange server.  After several minutes, it will connect back up, and seems to operate normally.  During the down time, I am able to connect to OWA, and ActiveSync seems to work as well.
If I run the Remote Connectivity Analyzer while Outlook is responding, I get no errors and the "Connectivity Test Successful" message.  However, if I run it while Outlook is NOT responding, I get the following:
Exchange Web Services synchronization, notification, availability, and Automatic Replies.
Not all tests of Exchange Web Services tasks completed.

Following the adice I've seen online so far, I've:
I've made sure the auto discover in DNS points to the Exchange server.
I've disable auto-discover on the client, manually adding accounts, tried using their FQDN, local IP, LAN IP.
I've made exceptions to the proxie on the client.
Just not sure where to look next?  Appreciate any advice out there.

    Hi,
Before we go further, I'd like to confirm if your Outlook clients can work well when your Outlook MAC clients come across the issue.
If the issue only happens on your Outlook MAC clients, we can check the IIS log and confirm if there is any error releted to EWS. And you can recreate your EWS virtual directory to have a test.

  • Receive email delay one hour using Mac Mail client (Mountain Lion) connect Exchange Server 2010

    Hi all,
My boss use iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air (Mac Mail client), MacPro (Mac Mail client) connect Exchange Serve 2010 to receive emails. All clients are okay except MacBook Air, the Mac Mail client cannot receive the latest emails from Exchange Server, but it can receive (sync) the emails after one hour. The other clients can receive the latest email after Exchange Server receive new emails immediately.
In this period, the MacBook Air can receive the other IMAP, POP3 and webmail from ISP normally. I tried to set 5 mins to check emails or manual check email from Exchange Server. However, the latest email still delay one hour.......... .
I dumped a screenshot for Mac Mail setting for Exchange Server and a Log file.
could anyone help me to solve this issue?
    Thanks

I am not sure what the user has the check for new messages set for but mail does arrive as short as 2 minutes.  It does however arrive on his iphone immediately first.

  • Macbook Air loses connectivity every time it sleeps.

For about a month now my Macbook Air loses connectivity to wifi whenever it goes to sleep. I have it connected to my personal wifi and when I leave the MBA idle it goes to sleep after 15 mins. When I wake the computer it is still connected to my wifi, but the connectivity is gone. I have to turn airport off and then turn it back on. It regains connectivity immediately after that every time. However, it obviously shouldn't do that and it is annoying because it interrupts my downloads. I have tried playing around with the settings and reading the discussion boards. While people have had similar issues, none have been exactly the same and none of the troubleshooting has worked. Wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or fixes for this. Thanks in advance!

    Hello BrettG81,
I know that can be frustrating when your MacBook Air does not maintain a Wi-Fi connection. There are a few things that you can try to get it working again. I know you have done some looking at your settings and possibly some adjustments, but go over the first article as some of the troubleshooting for OS X Snow Leopard and Lion can be helpful. Another troubleshooting option is to create a new network location and test it out to see if you still have the same issue. All the steps are linked below.

  • Re-connecting SMB shares after sleep or standby?

I have searched the forums for an answer but no real solution have been found yet, maybe you can help?
Iäm currently using my Mac Mini in a Windows 2003 Server network. It's a workgroup and there is only one server. I have two shares on the Win2003 Server that I connect to from the Mac using the regular SMB "Connect to server" procedure. The shares mounts fine and everything is accessible, both read/write on NTFS.
Now, I have set my Mac to go to sleep after 1 hour of inactivity. When I wake it up, the SMB share mounts are gone so I need to manually reconnect them. I have an Applescript that I doubleclick on that reconnects the shares, again all without errors. I ususally don't shutdown the Mini via Apple-Shutdown but rather just by quickly pressing the powerbutton on the back of the mini for standby, when waking up the shares are gone.
Is it possible to "hard mount" the shares so they stay accessible after sleep, like they do in WinXP for instance?
I´ve read about "automount" but it only seems to address auto-login scripts and I have no problem with mounting at login. Someone mentioned that it's possible to create an alias to the shares and place them in the right hand side of the dock and that should make the shares auto-mount when clicked, how is that done exactly?
The simple solution would be to disable sleep and to always shutting down the Mini, but the instant wake-up is so useful that I really don´t want to wait for it to get ready.
Any suggestions and tips are welcome, thanks!

    Regarding questions 1-3:
    1-2 Yes.
    3. Yes, and same error shows up directly after launching puNetDaemon.
I didn't have the share's login stored in keychain because I was using a script that provided the login, thanks for pointing that out. I have made sure to connect to the share via Finder and to tick "store in keychain" and the share (E$) now connects automatically via Finder >> Go >> Connect to Server.
But I still get the same error. I have posted my ch.pusoft.txt below:

Its because, your firefox not update the version. the best way to solve this issue is clean reinstall
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
