Client Table in Airport Extreme

I use to have a Linksys DSL Router. One of the tabs in the administration software gave a listing of clients connected to the network. Is there a similar feature in the Airport Extreme?
If not, is there any other way to see what units are connected to my network?
I am currently not running WPA on my wireless network (I'm working on it but currently some issues to resolve) and would like to see if clients other than those in my house are attached to my network.
Thanks.
David

  • How can I get a list of all DCHP clients of my Airport Extreme?

I'm trying to troubleshoot network problems, and I can't figure out how to get a list of DHCP clients.  In Airport Utility 6.3.1, it lists the wireless clients when I click on the airport icon, but it doesn't list the wired clients.  Running around the house looking at the network settings of every wired device isn't a lot of run.
I saw posts that said to download Airport Utility 5.6.6, but the installer gives an error (I'm running OSX 10.7.5), so I can't get that to run.
Speaking of trying to troubleshoot problems, I don't see any logs accessible from Airport Utility.  How should I get at those?
    Thanks.

I was not able to install 5.6
You might be using Mavericks. Apple shut the door on 5.6 workarounds in Mavericks.
I can understand the need to keep things simple, but SOME level of advanced information (like wired client addresses) should be available on an advanced screen.  Extremely frustrating.
You might want to tell Apple this.

  • Maximum number of wifi clients on an airport extreme before airplay is adversely affected

I know the latest airport extreme (2/1/2015) states that it can handle up to 50 wifi clients.
I'm curious if anyone knows if airplay is adversely affected before 50?
Any info regarding this is greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

Airplay will be badly affected if you have any number of clients even 2 or 3 actively using the network over wireless assuming your network links for airplay are not all ethernet.. it is not the number of clients but the usage of the wireless that is problematic.. As soon as you get to 70% say usage wireless will become less and less efficient and unable to handle so many clients.
Wireless does not share well.. particularly streaming.. let me strongly recommend if you plan to stream a lot use ethernet.. and keep the wireless to a min.

  • How can I see a complete list of wired and wireless clients on an Airport Extreme?

As per the title, I cannot find a way in Airport Utility to see the wired clients, only the wireless ones. It's driving me nuts! Is there any other way of doing this via the Mac if the utility doesnt have this function?
    Thanks in advance.

Apple unfortunately has dropped a number of features and functions in Lion and Mountain Lion within the AirPort Utility application.
If you are using the Lion operating system, download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion to get those features back.
If you are using Mountain Lion, Apple's software will not allow you to install AirPort Utility 5.6 in the normal way....but you can always use a utility like Pacifist to manually extract the application from the downloand package and install it in the Utilities folder on your Mac.
Then AirPort Utility 5.6 will run just fine on a Mountain Lion machine. See this article for more details:

  • How do I find the Client ID with Airport Extreme?

Cant find the Manual Setup feature in the airport utility.

The Manual Setup feature....and a lot of other features..... were dropped when Apple went to Lion 10.7.4.
The best that you can do is open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Extrme icon to get some basic info. Click Edit in the box to go deeper into the application.
If you are still using Lion 10.7.4, you can install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion and keep it along with AirPort Utility 6.x on your Mac. Use the one that you want.
AirPort Utility 5.6 will not install on Mountain Lion unless you employ some unofficial workarounds.

  • Airport Extreme and Dlink dwl-2000AP+ as wireless client

    Hi,
i'm trying to let an old iMac G3 without any airport card, join an existing lan using an Airport Extreme as router, connecting an old D-Link access point configured as wireless client and connected via ethernet to the iMac G3. All my setup works fine if the wireless connection is open without encryption, but it won't work using any protection like WPA or WEP.
When the airport express wireless connection is protected via WPA, the dlink won't be present in wireless clients list panel. When i use WEP (with a password of 13 characters) i can see in the wireless clients list both the MAC address of the iMac's ethernet and of the dwl-2000AP+ etherenet. But the connection won't work.
I'm sure i'm not configuring right the DWL-2000AP+ wireless protection:
i can't understand if i can change the airport express WEP encryption to a 64 bits or to a 128 bit, if the WEP method used is with a shared key or not.
The only info i get from it to let the clients connect are the WEP ASCII plain-text 13 characters password and its conversion in HEX base.
I'm assuming, since the password is a 13 character, that in WEP encryption the Airport Extreme uses a 128 bits key, but, again, how i can understand if it is used in shared way or in open way?
And why the dlink AP that is WPA capable cannot connect as wireless client to the airport express when is using WPA/WPA2 Personal encryption?
I upgraded the DWL-2000AP+ to its latest firmware that (they sayd)fixes any issue with the wireless client mode on WPA or WEP protected connections.
Thanks in advance for any help given.
P.S.: sorry for my "broken" english

Resolved by myself. It works only setting the Dlink dwl-2000AP+ wireless client connection (wireless pane in the admin control of it) as open with WEP 128bits and using as key an ascii password of 13 charcaters. The Airport Extreme's wireless encryption should be set as WEP, using the same password of 13 charcaters. I still can't uderstand why the WPA/WPA2 encryption wouldn't work since the Dlink dwl-2000AP is WPA capable.
Maybe it could be so because the Airport Extreme is WPA2 and at the first negotiation between it and the dwl-2000AP+, the Airport Extreme won't downgrade to WPA encryption? Does anybody else tried to connect a WPA wireless client to the Airport Extreme setup as WPA2/WPA Personal?
@wallstreet 04: try to setup your Airport Extreme's wireless encryption to WEP and use a 13 chars password, then do the same on the Dlink wireless client you are trying to connect to the base, i don't know how is its control panel but the wireless should be setup as open with WEP 128, as key use that 13 chars password you put in the Extreme's as WEP password. If in the Dlink WEP 128 bits key field you have to put an HEX value instead of the ASCII, you can get that from the Airport Utility from the menu BASE AIRPOT select PASSWORD NETWORK... (the one before the last choice that should be ADD WIRELESS CLIENT).
    I hope it will help.

  • Unsteady connection of MacMini client to Airport Extreme

I have 2 clients to my Airport Extreme: an iMac and a MacMini, both running 10.5.7.
The connection of the iMac to the wireless network is rock solid. The Mini, on the other hand, regularly loses its connection, always after a logout or switching users. Each time the user logs out and back in she is required to supply the AE password.
The Mini is about 15 ft away from the AE in a frame construction building, and it always shows 4 bars on the menu strip icon.
I also had to give up having the Mini back up to a disk connected to the AE via its USB port, due to the connection failing often and generating lots of messages in the system log.
I am convinced that this is one and the same problem.
Why does one client have a reliable and persistent connection and the other just the opposite?
I would be grateful for any suggestions ...

Thanks for the suggestion - I've connected the APExpress to the APExtreme via ethernet and can now see both via APUtility. When I try to perform Manual Setup on the APExpress I get the error message -6753 "An error occurred while trying to access the Apple wireless device".
I've noted that the IP Address on the APExpress falls outside the DHCP range managed by the APExtreme - could eb the root of teh problem, but not sure how to get into the APExpress to change it...

  • AirPort Extreme as a client

I have my DSL modem connected to a 2 year old Netgear wireless ( 802.11b )router. I have my network security set for "none" (no password) . This has always worked fine with my multipe Macs. Now I want to add a new AirPort Extreme Wireless Base Station only as a client for USB printing and iTunes in another room by my G5. How do I set ithe AirPort Extreme up as a client? The AirPort Extreme amber light blinks slowly indicating a network connection problem. The G5 sees the AirPort Extreme but shows an error message when attempting to connect to it. I am not trying to access the internet nor extend range through the AirPort Extreme, because I don't think it can with the Netgear base station. I will eventually rewire my connection and use the full AirPort Extreme WBS fuctionality just not yet.

    Vonb,
Currently, the Airport extreme does not support wireless client mode, nor does it stream iTunes. You can find information on what the yellow light blinking means in Knowledge Base Article 305101(http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305101). Apple does make the Airport Express BaseStation (http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/) , which appears to meet the requirements that you are looking for.
    Regards,
    John

  • How do I use more than one USB device with Airport Extreme?

I would like to plug a shared hard drive into my new airport extreme and still be able to plug in a shared printer as well. How am I supposed to do this with only one USB port. Do I use a USB hub???
Is it possible to connect a hard drive using one of the ethernet ports?

To use multiple USB devices you would use a powered USB hub.
You can connect a hard drive to one of the Ethernet ports providing the hard drive is a NAS and supports Ethernet connections. In that situation the NAS hard drive is just like any other Ethernet client and the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not handle the file sharing services. The drive itself would provide the file sharing services.

  • IPad 1 to 1 now I am constantly resetting airport extremes

I work in a school and we have had airport extreme 802.11n (version 2 I think 9 total). All of them are running 7.6.3. We also added 60 ipads to the network for students and teachers. Since we have started school, I have had to reset various extremes at least three times. I don't see any reason for this to be happening. Sometimes there aren't even any clients on the airport extreme that must be reset. I don't know if I want to try 7.6.4 right now. I like to wait on airport extreme firmware. I do have the airport extremes set with the same SSID and the same WPA2 password. Any suggestions.

Copy the backup folder to another computer that can run the latest version of iTunes and restore on that one, make sure to disable autosync before you connect.
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Note: The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your home folder, Option-click the Go menu.
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press theReturn key.

  • Nortel VPN error when connecting using airport extreme

    Hi All,
I am trying to connect my work laptop xp server pack 2 using Nortel VPN Contivity Client via an Airport Extreme.
I have connected in the past but since the new Airport Extreme update I have been unable to connect.
I can surf the web on the laptop but am unable to connect securely to my work network.
Is there anyway I could go back to the reverse the Extreme update? Would this help?

To d/l prior versions of the software, you simply need to press ctrl (Windows) or Option (Mac) and then click on "check for updates" which is in the File pulldown menu.
This should give you the ability to choose the 7.2.1 version of the firmware. Once it is downloaded, simply go to "Base Station" - "Upload Firmware" and choose your desired version.
The 7.2.1 version allowed connection to the Nortel VPN, where 7.3.1 does not. 7.2.1 seems to have a problem with printing from an XP laptop wirelessly, though printing works from Apple laptops. That is the one remaining problem we are having. Bonjour was loaded on the XP computer, and it sees the printer and creates a definition for it just fine, but cannot print to it. A hardwired XP PC does not have any trouble printing via Bonjour-created definition, nor does the Apple computer have trouble wirelessl printing.

  • Airport extreme 802.11n plus airport express as wds

    hi,
with my new mb air i´ll want to upgrade to airport extreme and 802.11n. right now i´m using airport express which i´d like to keep as it supports airtunes. my idea is to make a wds network and use the express station as a range extender. now i´m wondering if i get any performance problems because the extreme station is "n". i´m afraid the whole network could run in 802.11b/g?!
    - christian

    OrthoProf:
No, there is no way to do this using nothing more than your existing Airport Extreme N Base Station. If you want to use an Airport Express as a wireless client to an Airport Extreme N Base Station, you must have "b/g compatible mode" enabled on that Base Station.
Christian wasn't implying that he had an Airport Express working with an Airport Extreme N Base Station in "n-only" mode. He actually had the same concerns you have over the fact that his Airport Extreme N Base Station would have to run in "b/g compatible mode" were he to use his Airport Express with his new Base Station - nence the reason he started this discussion.
Ben recommended setting up a dual-band wireless network. You could do this too - but you would have to purchase another wireless access point (like another Airport Express) which would be cabled to your Airport Extreme N Base Station. That new access point would provide b/g wireless access to b/g capable wireless clients (like the remote Airport Express you are streaming iTunes to) and would allow the Airport Extreme N Base Station to be configured in n-only mode for n-capable wireless clients.

  • Does Airport Extreme support Static Routes?

I have client using an Airport Extreme as their Router. They currently connect to another device outside their network using AppleTalk.
It is planned to put this device onto TCP/IP but on a different subnet (e.g. their subnet is 192.168.5.X and the device will be on say 192.168.25.X). Does Airport Extreme support (like other Routers) the ability to set up a static link to a device on a different subnet (can’t find any information in a doco or the utility) or do they need to replace this with a “real“ router?

Sure, I could do something like route add -net 10.100.10 192.168.0.100 on every client machine on the subnet, but there is no such way to configure a web cam and similiar devices
    Any idea, Apple?

  • AirPort Extreme WDS capabilities

Is the AirPort Extreme capable of picking up and expanding an existing WiFi or AirPort wireless network?
Could I for instance use the APE to extend the reach of my network from an existing wireless router, and still connect units through ethernet cable? And still use the USB sharing functions?

Are you certain the the AirPort Express (AX) is extending the network?
Or do you have the AX configure to join the network as a wireless client? KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode
The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does NOT have the ability to join as a wireless client.

  • AirPort Utility 6.0 DHCP client table?

    Hey there,
I just started using the 6.0 version of the AirPort utility.  It's fancy with pictures and all . . . but . . .
How do I get to a list of the DHCP clients?  It eludes me.  In the last version (5.6 I believe), I would select my main AirPort and get into the client table in its settings.  Now, though, I see a list of the DHCP addresses in use, but it's not listing them all, nor do I see the one that usually gives me trouble.
It looks like my AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule are both running firmware version 7.6; it looks like I can update that but I haven't wanted to disrupt the network yet.
I have a D-Link wireless camera connected which points at the dog kennel outside; whenever I mess with the network it gets a new IP address.  I'm accustomed to looking in the table to find where it is, but now it appears I have no table.
Should I revert to 5.6 for that information?  I can't find anything in the Help data on DHCP clients.
Thanks.  I'm sure the answer is easy, I just can't seem to figure it out.
    Stuart

I still can't figure out what the deal is with my Time Capsule.  It will occasionally (maybe every 3 days or so) lose its connection to the network and get a yellow light.  If I reboot the main AirPort Extreme, the connection is re-established.
At least now I have an IP reservation for it, so I can always just pull up the camera without having to search for its IP address, but the fact that the network breaks up every so often is quite annoying.
Any ideas?  I guess I could start a new thread about My Time Capsule Loses Its Mind, Help, but this discussion seems like the right place.
