Client takes a long time to get network login screen from server

I have just installed the new xserve with 10.5.1
I have configured DNS
My problem is that my client 10.5 takes about 1 and a half minutes to get the network users show up on the login screen.
I have searched through the system logs and found the following. Don't know if these have anything to do with the slow client but it is a start. If anyone can shed some light on this I would appreciate it. Thanks Bails:)
following are some error messages

I just guess hete based on the first two logs entries that the server is unable to query DNS. All sorts of DNS lookup failures are a common source of such long timeout errors. It might be because your DNS is not set up right or because the DNS server is not accessible to the server (incorrect routing rules or network settings in general).

    I was away for 9 days came home to my computer not responding. I am using the free version of AVG security and read the instructions in the Mozilla help Re: Firewalls, changing the AVG settings removing Mozilla and then adding it back in. However I checked for updates on AVG none were available and the instructions Mozilla has are for a version of AVG that I do not have. I am using 8.5 and I think the instructions were for 9.0. At any rate I am stuck, and desperately need to get this figured out! I hope that this is enough information for someone to point me in the right direction.? Your help is be greatly appreciated. • SUS - Some Clients Take a Long Time to Check for Updates

    We have the newest XSERVE, running 10.6, with 12GB of RAM. We use it as our software update server and for some reason, some clients take a long time to check for updates. I'm talking anywhere from an 30 mins to an hour. I can't figure it out. Some clients are quick, some are extremely long.
    Now if I tell the client to just check Apple for updates, it takes a few seconds.
    Can anyone offer any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    After another restart, firefox has begun throwing errors when starting from terminal. the error reported is:
    /opt/kde/bin/skim: error while loading shared libraries: libpng12.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    This is printed 5 times, then gives up and firefox loads quickly after. So this appears to be an issue with skim and libpng similar to other problems being reported.
    Some research uncovered that skim is no longer supported and is part of my kdemod3 install, however until this update it was working fine under kdemod4.

  • 10.4.8 Client takes long time to get to login window when bound to OD.

    I am working on a system in a school. We have a dual processor g5 xserve with 4 gb of ram, the raid card, and 3 500 gb drives.
    Fresh install of 10.4.8 with all the updates.
    Raid 5 split in 2 volumes, one for server and one for data.
    AFP service running.
    Local dns running.
    Promoted to open directory master.
    This is the following test scenario i have.
    there is a user called studenttest and he belongs to a group called cccarstarmembers and is in a workgroup called student.
    the studenttest users home folder exists in a sharepoint called students that is set up on the data partition.
    there is a sharepoint called cccarstar that holds data for some educational software we use. The owner is administrator with rw access, the group is cccarstarmembers with rw access and others have no access.
    The student workgroup only has a few changes like dock location just for testing purposes to verify that the work group is working properly.
    When i bind a newly built 10.4.8 client with all the updates to the od server it intermittantly takes a long time for the client to get to the login window when it is powered up. Sometimes it will get to the login window in 45 seconds and other times it will take 5 minutes. This is not consistant. if you unbind the client then the computer will behave properly consistantly.
    I have tried binding the client to the od master using the fully qualified domain name and the ip address with the same results.
    the search path on the server is "dc=osx1,dc=erm,dc=sd,dc=bc,dc=ca" and on the client it auto populates at cn=config,dc=osx1,dc=erm,dc=sd,dc=bc,dc=ca".
    I have changed the search path on the client to match the search path on the server with no success as this is what used to work for us on panther setups.
    But this school has a panther client i am working on at the same time with the same applications installed and system preference settings and when i bind it to the same od master with the same search path that is displayed on the server it works fine. all users work, all groups and work groups work.
    Dns appears to be working. lookup provides the correct forward and reverse lookup info on the server, if i use either the panther or tiger client and use lookup with the servers fully qualified domain name and ip address i get the correct answers back.
    I had this problem before where tiger gave me slow to login screen problems but panther wouldnt when bound, and apple told me that it was because i had afp guest access disabled on the server. Enabling it resolved the issue about 6 months ago at another site but this time when building the server i made sure it was on from the start even thoug it is off by default.
    Any suggestions, i am pulling my hair out and about 8 working hours from a deadline.

    I've seen this a lot.
    This Knowledge Base article refers to Active Directory but we've seen this fix login delays with OD-only environments too:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303841
    Another one of the causes is when you have multiple network mounts and your AFP service has guest access disabled. The loginwindow is trying to authenticate to each share with the username given and it is failing when that user account is not authorised for that share.
    Another can be the LDAP timeout value(s). Try adjusting these in the LDAPv3 plug-in.
    Also make sure your network ports have portfast/faststart set on the Mac ports. Sometimes because of STP the port isn't initialised fast enough for the OS when it's ready to start LDAP'ing.
    Let me know if any of this helps.

    The signal 11 could indicate memoryproblems which are most likely to
    appear when importing cluster or transparent table
    A possible solution might be to delete the entries in the target client
    before the import or otherwise to exclude the clustertable from the
    client export and to transport it separately. Check note #68896 for more
    information on these topics.
    Table RFRR is a work table. Its content will be filled by the two
    reports RFDRRGEN and RFKRRGEN (batch jobs) periodically. So you can
    exclude the table from the transport. Please do it by using
            report RSCCEXPT (see note #70290 - see attachment).
    After this you can start your export of the client.
    If all is done, start the reports RFDRRGEN and RFKRRGEN to create the
    table RFRR.
    Note 718511 is also applicable here, you could clean up the scrap characters and then retry the export.
    Kind regards,
    Paul

  • Does your Apple TV take a long time to get to the main menu?

    I have my Apple TV hooked up via HDMI to a Panasonic Plasma. Everything works pretty good except for the recurring missing from devices in iTunes. A restart of iTunes always brings it back.
    I'd like to know if my experience with slow start up is normal. When I switch from my regular TV output to the HDMI output for my Apple TV it takes a really long time to start up. I will get my photos that are my screensaver after about 1 minute. Then it takes another minute and a half or more to get to the main menu after pressing the menu button on the remote. Is this normal? Should it be connecting faster? If so, what can I do to the settings to speed things up.
    Thanks for the help.
    Cheers
    mrjazz

    it can vary depending on the TV you have.
    HDMI handshaking isn't the most reliable thing (in any device).

  • Leopard Clients take a Long Time to Login (roughly 1~2 minutes)

    Hello all,
    I've spent the last few weeks scouring these groups and then net and searching and searching for someone with a similar problem to my own, but have come up pretty much empty handed and so now turn to here to see if any else has had this issue or can at least point me where to look to resolve the problem.
    I've got a clean install of a XServe running Leopard server 10.5.2 with OD, AFP services and User home folders configured and fully working.
    The problem:
    Clean install of Tiger client logs into the server (OD binded) perfectly. Takes maybe 15 seconds tops to for the client to log in and show the all the AFP mounts and client settings and user's desktop and files, etc.
    However, a fresh Leopard client install (OD binded) takes roughly 1~2 minutes to do the exact same thing.
    I've gone through any log file I can find on server and client side, checked my DNS running on this xserve, created new users without "home" folders, and searched just about everywhere for an answer to this issue and am still empty handed.
    This is not a show stopper issue, but there is something definitely not normal about what is happening with Leopard client logins.
    I'm trying to explain this as best as I can without making a wall of text, but I'm sure I'll forget something, so please ask questions if you have them.
    Things I'm seeing in the logs during the time of the login happening are:

    I'd like to know what exactly the client workstation is doing during this time with the server, but it looks like it just hangs and does nothing since nothing shows up in the logs that I can find during this time period where the client hangs. Maybe I can try an Ethereal trace to see what traffic is being sent back and forth during this timeframe. I don't know if this is a configuration issue on my part or a OD / AFP bug on Apple's part since Tiger clients connect perfectly.
    Logouts happen immediately, so no problems there on that end. And everything else with the system is working flawlessly (besides the OD Crashing issue which I'm sure everyone is well aware of right now with 10.5.2).
    Thank you to anyone that can assist in shedding some light on this issue and I apologize if I didn't provide enough information.

    FOUND IT!!! Well for our install anyway. The culprit was AUTH2.
    In our case computers would (randomly) have the same ..SLOW.. symptoms as your original post described, and the 'Apple Password Server log' on our server showed the same log entries.
    It turned out that Single-Sign-On was being screwed up by two Authentication Authorities as applied in the LDAP (Computer and User) Attributes,
    and showed up in the log as competing authentications from KERBEROS-LOGIN-CHECK and AUTH2. as follows:
    Apr 30 2008 16:22:17 RSAVALIDATE: success.
    Apr 30 2008 16:22:17 AUTH2: {0x4818c423083a8ddd0000000a0000000a, user} DIGEST-MD5 authentication succeeded.

    Now, all the entries in our log (for remote logins) show:
    May 2 2008 10:35:39 KERBEROS-LOGIN-CHECK: user {0x4818c423083a8ddd0000000a0000000a, user} is in good standing.

    i.e...Single-Sign-On and they're FAST.
    no more AUTH2 entries overlapping with KERBEROS.
    (local Authentications still show AUTH2 when using WGM)
    The solution was pretty straight forward, But only applies if the system is using Single-Sign-On with AFP shared home folders and the Authentication for AFP is set to Kerberos.
    Delete ;ApplePasswordServer entries from all user/computer combinations that are having problems.
    I actually deleted it from all users and Computers. (Except the Server Computer and Directory Administrator that uses WGM. When I tested these, WGM would not authenticate Diradmin)
    It can be done in the GUI from the inspector tab in WGM
    find the attibute
    dsAttrTypeStandard:AuthenticationAuthority
    click to open
    If there are two entries: ApplePasswordServer and Kerberosv5 then:
    Edit the ApplePasswordServer entry (You can copy the text into an editor and save it for future use if needed, all entries are the same for all computers and users, so you only need 1 copy, and you can paste it back into new entry to put it back,...If needed....maybe for older systems, mine are all Leopard.
    Now delete, OK, and Save the changes
    After its done, check the logs again to make sure that all remote logons now show
    KERBEROS-LOGIN-CHECK:
    and they should be FAST.
    Hope this helps

    Hi,
    I built a query with 4 tables inside (load from Oracle DB and two of them are quite big, more than millions of rows). After filtering, I tried to build relationships between tables using Table.Join formula. However, the process took extremly long time to
    bring out results (I ended the process after 15 mins' processing). There's a status bar kept updating while the query was processing, which is showed as  . I suppose
    this is because the query folding didn't working, so PQ had to load all the data to local memory first then do the opertion, instead of doing all the work on the source system side. Am I right? If yes, is there any ways to solve this issue?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Qilong

    Hi Curt,
    Here's the query that I'm refering,
    let
        Source = Oracle.Database("reporting"),
        AOLOT_HISTS = Source{[Schema="GEN",Item="MVIEW$_AOLOT_HISTS"]}[Data],
        WORK_WEEK = Source{[Schema="GEN",Item="WORK_WEEK"]}[Data],
        DEVICES = Source{[Schema="GEN",Item="MVIEW$_DEVICES"]}[Data],
        AO_LOTS = Source{[Schema="GEN",Item="MVIEW$_AO_LOTS"]}[Data],
        Filter_WorkWeek = Table.SelectRows(WORK_WEEK, each ([WRWK_YEAR] = 2015) and (([WORK_WEEK] = 1) or ([WORK_WEEK] = 2) or ([WORK_WEEK] = 3))),
        Filter_AlotHists = Table.SelectRows(AOLOT_HISTS, each ([STEP_NAME] = "BAKE" or [STEP_NAME] = "COLD TEST-IFLEX" or [STEP_NAME] = "COLD TEST-MFLEX") and ([OUT_QUANTITY] <> 0)),
        #"Added Custom" = Table.AddColumn(Filter_AlotHists, "Custom", each Table.SelectRows(Filter_WorkWeek, (table2Row) => [PROCESS_END_TIME] >= table2Row[WRWK_START_DATE] and [PROCESS_END_TIME] <= table2Row[WRWK_END_DATE])),
        #"Expand Custom" = Table.ExpandTableColumn(#"Added Custom", "Custom", {"WRWK_YEAR", "WORK_WEEK", "WRWK_START_DATE", "WRWK_END_DATE"}, {"WRWK_YEAR", "WORK_WEEK",
    "WRWK_START_DATE", "WRWK_END_DATE"}),
        Filter_AolotHists_byWeek = Table.SelectRows(#"Expand Custom", each ([WORK_WEEK] <> null)),
        SelectColumns_AolotHists = Table.SelectColumns(Filter_AolotHists_byWeek,{"ALOT_NUMBER", "STEP_NAME", "PROCESS_START_TIME", "PROCESS_END_TIME", "START_QUANTITY", "OUT_QUANTITY", "REJECT_QUANTITY",
    "WRWK_FISCAL_YEAR", "WRWK_WORK_WEEK_NO"}),
        Filter_Devices= Table.SelectRows(DEVICES, each ([DEPARTMENT] = "TEST1")),
        SelectColumns_Devices = Table.SelectColumns(Filter_Devices,{"DEVC_NUMBER", "PCKG_CODE"}),
        Filter_AoLots = Table.SelectRows(AO_LOTS, each Text.Contains([DEVC_NUMBER], "MC09XS3400AFK") or Text.Contains([DEVC_NUMBER], "MC09XS3400AFKR2") or Text.Contains([DEVC_NUMBER], "MC10XS3412CHFK") or Text.Contains([DEVC_NUMBER],
    "MC10XS3412CHFKR2")),
        SelectColumns_AoLots = Table.SelectColumns(Filter_AoLots,{"ALOT_NUMBER", "DEVC_NUMBER", "TRACECODE", "WAFERLOTNUMBER"}),
        TableJoin = Table.Join(SelectColumns_AolotHists, "ALOT_NUMBER", Table.PrefixColumns(SelectColumns_AoLots, "AoLots"), "AoLots.ALOT_NUMBER"),
        TableJoin1 = Table.Join(TableJoin, "AoLots.DEVC_NUMBER", Table.PrefixColumns(SelectColumns_Devices, "Devices"), "Devices.DEVC_NUMBER")
    in
        TableJoin1
    Could you please give me some hints why it needs so long to process?
    Thanks.

  • Firefox takes a long time to start, unless I disconnect from the internet first, in which case it starts instantly.

    Whenever I start firefox, it takes an inordinately long time (usually close to a minute, sometimes longer) to start up. i.e. no window, no nothing. In task manager, it shows no activity for cpu, disk, or network activity - it's as if it's waiting for a connection to be made or something.
    If I disable my internet access first, then start firefox, it starts up instantly, and once the internet re-enabled, it works normally.
    Whatever it is doing at initial startup is taking a very long time - couldn't it be done in a separate thread, and let normal startup continue?

    Press the '''<Alt>''' or '''<F10>''' key to bring up the tool bar.
    Followed by;
    Windows; '''Tools > Options'''
    Linux; '''Edit > Preferences'''
    Mac; ''application name'' '''> Preferences'''
    Then '''General.'''
    There are two settings;
    * '''When Firefox Starts'''
    When the browser is started, what page do you want to
    display. Many of us choose '''Show My Home Page.'''
    * '''Home Page'''
    When a new page is opened, what do you want displayed.
    # '''Use Current Page'''. Use what ever page(s) are open at that time.
    # '''Use Bookmark'''
    # '''Restore To Default.''' about:home shows a Mozilla page with tools.
    You can use any of these that you wish;
    '''about:home''' (Firefox default home page),
    '''about:newtab''' (shows the sites most visited),
    '''about:blank''' (a blank page),
    or you can enter any '''web page''' or '''about: ''page''''' you want.

  • Speedgrade Takes a Long Time to Open When Direct Linking From PP

    Hello,
    I was just trying out the new tutorial and footage for Speedgrade (the Pizza and Coffee stuff).
    I notice that the very first time I do a direct link from the provided PP sequence, that there is a very long hang on the SG splash screen (with a series of progress bars animating over and over at the bottom). After a long time, SG finally opens.
    After going through this process, I notice that future round trips between PP and SG in this same project no longer cause the long delay.
    My question is, what is happening during that initial long delay? I know that there is not supposed to be any transcoding, etc. in the new workflow but if that is what is happening, where are the new files begin stored?
    Thanks,
    Lance
    P.S. Bonus question, Are the Tabs like Timeline, Clip, Stereo 3D, Audio, etc supposed to be locked when working in a direct link project?

    It could be a normal behavior to see a long loading process. The timing is related to a lot of different things, but there isn't any transcoding process. So no new files are created.
    Yes, when using Direct Link, there are a few functionality greyed out.

  • Lync 2013 Client takes a long time to "restore" from taskbar

    On many Windows 8 & 8.1 systems in our environment the Lync client will take anywhere from 2-10 seconds to pop up when clicked on in the taskbar.  The application is running, logged in, and active.  This is very frustrating to our userbase
    as they will click on it multiple times and have it then act like a jackrabbit when it finally processes the requested actions.
    The computers we have are brand new systems.  Happens on freshly installed & updated versions of Lync 2013.  Seems to be after the Lync client hasn't been clicked on, or utilized in a while.  Other applications pop up instantly (zero delay)
    and without any problems, it only affects Lync.  I tried disabling UI animations such as fade, slide etc, which did nothing to help the issue.
    This has me a bit stumped, and I'm wondering if this is a known issue or not?  Hopefully there is a solution?

    I wouldn't say it's dismissive, I was asking for more information.  I wanted to know if it was potentially an overactive endpoint protection application or something similar, if it can't be reproduced on fresh build of Windows then something is interfering
    and it's difficult to work out not knowing what all is installed.  Most people don't experience the issue so I imagine another piece of software may likely be conflicting.
    I do agree that it's not an answer, at the least not very useful answer.  Occasionally items get marked as answer but they're more of a "closed" as the original poster never responds.
    I'd suggest posting your issue in the Lync 2013 forums instead as people are less likely to watch this post now that it's already marked "answered".  Work through it and see what can be found, hopefully you'll find some good information which will be
    more helpful to others.

  • Why does it take a long time to get help when you have a problem?

    Posted a problem 2 weeks ago why havent I been give a solution to this problem?

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    *Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

    A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
    Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Very slow to delete, send, forward, circle just goes round and round and then finally does its task plus sometimes stalls and takes a long time to get mail.

    It also comes up with an error message once in a while when I try to send something and won't send it but if I click send again then it usually goes out.

    Check your firewall and make sure that Thunderbird has full access. (This computer has Norton 360, and the firewall blocked incoming connections)
    How many folders are you storing offline? If you have a lot in your trash/spam/sent folders and it is storing offline, maybe that's slowing it down. It wouldn't hurt to check and see if your e-mail provider is somehow blocking Thunderbird.

    Netflix, HBO Go, ABC TV along with other apple TV apps, take a very long time to download the video and they are choppy when running. My apple TV runs off of WiFi in my apartment. When trying to download updates, it take a long time and then a video screen with "This Update was not Successful. Apple TV couldn't be downloaded at this time. Try again later." What can I do to resolve this issue? I purchased this apple TV in May 2013 new.

    That will be an issue with the network
    What is your current connection via speedtest.net?
    Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general -network)
    Since you are in an apartment the local wifi network is more prone to interference, try ethernet

    OK. If you believe that.
    When the disk is starting to die it can be bad for a moment and then be good for a while. If there was no problem while you were checking it of course it shows up good.
    I tell you those are the signs of a disk that is about to die.
