Client tracking in WCS

I have a wcs and found how to do rogue AP location tracking, but i haven't figured out if it is possible to show the location of a legitimate client connected on the network, without having a Cisco Location Appliance.
Is this possible?

Hi Jarrodpicha,
yes this is possible, depending on the version of WCS (BASE or LOCATION) it will give you different accuracy. In the Base version simply select search > devices > clients. In the sidebar, choose All Clients in the Search For Clients By drop-down menu and click Search to display the Clients page.
Click the username of the client that you want to locate. WCS displays the corresponding Clients ClientName page.
To find the client, choose one of these options from the Select a Command drop-down menu and click
GO:
? Recent Map (High Resolution)?Finds the client without disassociating it.
? Present Map (High Resolution)?Disassociates the client and then finds it after reassociation.
When you choose this method, WCS displays a warning message and asks you to confirm that you want to continue.
If you are using WCS Location, WCS compares the RSSI signal strength from two or more access points to find the most probable location of the client and places a small laptop icon at its most likely location.
If you are using WCS Base, WCS relies on the RSSI signal strength from the client and places a small laptop icon next to the access point that receives the strongest RSSI signal from the client.
Hope this help

  • Refresh rate for client tracking i WCS/MSE

    Hi
I have a customer that have trouble with the update of the position of a client. Even if the clients walks across the whole building, the client will stay at the same place for several minutes. Is there any way to tune the refresh rate? When I push the load button in the map, the clients position will refresh, or it did when I was on the site, now they just test with an application.
    The setup:
    WiSM 7.0.220
    WCS 7.0.220
    MSE 7.0.220
They use the API for MSE to get the location information to the external application, and that will show the information on a cisco 7925 IP phone.
Do someone know a way to increasing the refresh rate?
    - Patrick

From: Cisco Mobility Services Engine - Context Aware Mobility Solution Deployment Guide
Jitter: Before the 5.2 release, MSE used to have Location Smoothening mechanism to track clients. Moving average was taken for clients, or, in other words, client movement was averaged. Starting with 5.2 software release, this whole
mechanism has been replaced with “Location Filters.” Location Filtering is applied internally on a per client basis. MSE
keeps track of which client moves and which is stationary, and it applies filtering accordingly. This reduces the overall jitter of the system. Location filtering is enabled by default.
Perhaps you want to turn  location Filtering OFF for your application.

  • Detailed client Report in WCS

    Hi,
what exactly mean the fields of the traps  that appear in the Detailed Client report of the WCS?
    07/08/10 08:09,"00:04:23:71:67:bf",,"Campus> Ome > CN.OM.P03","XSFK2MP345","10.120.205.25",07/08/10 08:09,"0 secs","0.0.0.0",0,-128,"802.11b","N/A",0,0,0,0,"No","Associated","Client '00:04:23:71:67:bf' is associated with AP '00:23:eb:2d:8a:e0', interface '0'."
which means many  associations of  "0Sec" with no IP assigned?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Are you still facing this issue?
    thanks,

  • Help with Prime Infrastructure Client Tracking

I'm running PI 1.2.1.012 and I'm having issues populating client information. Most of my switches are 2960 series. Specifically I get a lot of MAC Address "Unknown" and nothing in the IP address field. I probably get about 25% of the correct MAC address and 10% of the IP addresses. I also run CiscoWorks Prime LMS 4.3.2. and the user tracking information is about 98% correct pertaining to MAC address and IP address. My other network management tools also are very accurate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same Problem here. I've discovered all the access switches in the environment and they are "Managed" in Device Work Center. Previously we used CiscoWorks and that populated the Mac address, IP address, along with what switch the end host was connected to. That was very helpful for our Helpdesk in troubleshooting. Im now trying to setup the same thing in Prime. Looking at a individual switch the MAC would populate but nothing on IP Address.
Im at a loss. I've newly taken over the position of Network Analyst so maybe there is a licensing issue that we didnt get that im not aware of thats not bringing the ISE or LMS portion of Prime into play?

  • No client notifications on WCS

We have two WLC'2 4402(sw 5.2.193.0) and one WCS with sw 5.2.148.0. I have a lot of client warnings in the controllers trap logs but none clients alarms on my WCS. Is there any reason why the WCS does not reports client problems ?

Use Administration > Logging to access the Administer Logging Options page. This logging function is only related to WCS logging and not syslog information. The logging for controller syslog information can be done on the Controller > Management > Syslog page.
Email Notification can be done with WCS. WCS includes a built-in email notification function that can notify network operators when critical alarms occur. Refer to the WCS Monitor > All Alarms > Email Notification page to view the current alarm notification settings.
    Use Monitor/Alarms.
From a command drop-down list, choose Email Notification.
Click GO to access this page.
This page allows you to view the alarm categories with the critical-alarm email notification enabled and disabled, the current From and To email addresses, and the current SMTP server. This page also allows you to enable and disable email notification (check box checked = email notification ON; check box unchecked = email notification OFF) for any or all of the alarm categories, and it allows you to access an alarm category email notification setup page.
For every category except Coverage Holes, the alarm severity must be critical to trigger the email. Email notification is available only for alarms, not for events.
Note: If you do not receive emails from WCS, check whether port 25 is blocked.
Note: A WCS administrator currently has no control over which events generate alarms, when they time out, or the degree of their severity. On the controller, individual types of events can be enabled or disabled (such as management, SNMP, trap controls, etc.).

  • Details for client on a WCS

    Hello,
I would like to ask you a question related to the WCS, I have the version 5.2.130 ..
I wonder if it is possible that when I look for a client that is associated to some WLC, selecting the client, I get four tabs General, Statics, Location and History Association, could add another tab, but there it was that of Clients details Report? ?
    Thank you very much
    Greetings

I do not believe in 5.2 there is an option to edit the tabs as there is from the "Home" page.  I checked the latest 6.0 and do not see it there either.  If there is a need for customization I think that is a valid request for a PERS ( product enhancement request ) through your account team.

  • Extract client location data WCS

    Hi,
I have WCS with plus license and I've seen it is possible to locate a client on demand in a map. My question is, apart from the position being displayed in a map, is it possible to extract some data with the position of a client referenced to the map, such as the coordinates?
    Thanks.

Thanks Scott, I suppose it as well. The question arises because we haven't an MSE and our IT department wants to develop an app to locate clients making use of the present  wireless infrastructure. Sincerely I don't think this could be possible, and in case it could be, accuracy wouldn't be so good. I don't know if someone has tried to do something like this.

  • I Ask About WCS count Client not same WLC

WCS  count Client not same WLC   as on WLC count client  = 100
    on WCS count = 23-23
     Wireless Control System  Version 5.2.148.0
     WLC  7.0.250.0
    http://postimg.org/image/9boldeqd5/
    http://postimg.org/image/l482i9poz/

Your WCS should have a higher (or not equal) version to your WLC.
I wouldn't even consider troubleshooting WCS problems if your WCS is running 5.X because WCS/WLC firmwares 5.X are very, very buggy.

  • WCS Busiest Client Report Problem

We are using Wism 4.0.155.5 and WCS 4.0.81.0. Everytime I run "busiest client report" on WCS, I get some clients with throughput more than 70Mbps and utilization more than 600%!!! It is very weird. Anyone see this as well? Thanks.

    zhenningx:
I see it too. It definitely appears to be a bug, but I will do some checking. Mine show upwards of 2000% and most of my top 25 show an almost identical tx/tx amount of 4gb.
If I make any headway with TAC, I'll let you know.

  • WCS 4.0 Client Statistics without Location Services

    Hello,
when I watch a client in the WCS 4.0.96(base only version) the section named "client statistics" only prints "Location Server did not return any statistics information for this client."
Does that mean, that I need a location version to get infos like how much traffic a client generated? That would be hard to believe... :-/
    greetings, p.k.

We do not have location services. We only have a Base version license for WCS.
But I see no reason why location services are required for such simple statistics how much traffic a user created.
    p.k.

  • WCS Unique Client report problem

If I run a "Unique Client" report in WCS (based on 4 controllers) using the range "last 1 day", I get plenty of data.  But if I choose a specific range of time, even within the last 24 hours, I don't get any data.  Seems like a bug.  Anyone else experience this issue?
    It's WCS 7.0.172

Seems you are facing below bug and needs a patch uniqueclients.xml which can be provided by TAC.CSCtq64813
Apply the workaround which done by the following steps:  1. Stop WCS 2. cd to /webnms/classes/com/cisco/server/reports/conf 3. Backup UniqueClients.xml 4. Copy the attached file to UniqueClients.xml (batch file attached in the case) 5. Restart the server

  • WCS & 2710 Location Appliance

I am running version 7.0.164.0 on my WCS and have a 2700 and a 2710 Location Appliance both running version 6.0.102.0.  I used to be able track clients on the WCS maps but now I am not able to.  No clients show up on the maps anymore, just the APs and their heat maps.  I'm not sure when this started but I am guessing there is a compatability issue between the two.  Can anyone verify this?

I am running the same versions and able to track clients. You might need to
click on the ">" to pull up the filter for the client view and check the show all clients checkbox

  • How to remove old clients in MSE3350

We have reached the limit off 3000 clients in our MSE 3350. This is moslty do to a lot of probing clients, BUT we need to track probing clients.
How ever we believe that this large number must include clients that is no longer active.
How can we change how fast a clietns that is no longer seen is removed from the MSE leaving space to new clients.
    Best regards Rasmus Sindum, NetDesign

    Hi,
on the WLC, the probing client is deleted after 5 minutes. So check out the number of clients on your WCS and if it is 3000, then it means you just have too many people "just probing".

    Nicolas

  • Cisco WCS + 5508 - Monitor view vendor name

Just finishing up a small install of a 5508 controller and WCS.
    Approx 30 AP's across 2 buildings
2 WLANS - 1 prod wpa2 and 1 guest which is completely open to internet only.
Our security group is asking if there is a way to determine who is accessing the Prod WLAN. Currently it is setup
to work with eap and the users AD account which is working well.
I noticed under the client tab in WCS that there is a Vendor name and it shows me intel and even RIM when someone with their Blackberry is
connected. BUT when we connect via an IPAD it show "unknown" as vendor name. Is there a way to get the IPAD to register under the vendor name ?
    Running 7.0.172.0 of WCS
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Dave

I don't have your answer so I'm curious as well, but the vendor name is derived from the OUI - first six characters of MAC address. If the file that maps OUI to vendors was updated it would probably say "Apple" which would include all i-things and wireless macs.
    Here's a site to lookup OUIs: http://hwaddress.com
I have set up an account in WCS for the security group, and made them members of "System Monitoring" group. They can create and schedule user reports but can't change any settings.
