Clients on extended network

Hi all
How can I tell if my new Airport Express n is really extending my network? I have an iPod Touch sitting in a dock right next to the AXn, but the iPod doesn't show up as a client in Airport Utility.
That is, when I go to  Manual Setup > Wireless > Logging & Statistics  > Logs and Statistics > Wireless Clients
the only client that shows up is the TC base station. No iPod.
On the other hand, the iPod seems to be showing more signal bars, but that may be wishful thinking on my part.
I'm new to all this and would  appreciate any guidance I can get.
Thanks in advance
Jim

If you have a Mac laptop, open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Expess on lthe left.
On the right, look for the AirPort ID of the AirPort Express and jot that down.
Move  your laptop close to the AirPort Express and wait a moment or two
Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen.
Look for the BSSID
That should match the AirPort ID of the AirPort Express, which tells you that your laptop is picking up the signal from the AirPort Express.
If you don't see the ID of the AirPort Express, your laptop is picking up the signal from the TC, indicating that your AirPort Express may be located too far from the TC to extend the signal, or there may have been a error in the configuration.
What are your results?

  • Time Capsule & Airport Express Extended Network loses connection!

OK, so I am an Apple virgin of 2 months experience, after many many years with Windows based PCs, so please be patient and gentle with me. Sorry about the long explanation.....
My set-up comprises of a Time Capsule, which is connected to the Internet via a NetGear ASDL modem. Both pieces of equipment are situated in my wife's office on the first floor of our house. My office is on the ground floor, where I have a 27" iMac and an Airport Express which is connected to a printer via the USB port. The Airport Express is sited about 10 feet from the iMac.
All software and firmware are lastest versions - TC v7.5, AX v7.4.2 & Airport Utility v5.5.
For the past 2 months, I have only been using the AX to print wirelessly and the set-up has worked faultlessly.
Earlier this week, I decided change the configuration to extend the network to allow me to use my laptop & iPhone in areas of the ground floor where I had no signal. I followed the online instructions and first changed the TC to check the box to 'allow this network to be extended', after updating the configuration successfully I moved to the AX. Here I changed the wireless mode to 'Extend a wireless network', selected the network name and checked the 'Allow wireless clients' box. This also updated successfully.
Everything ran correctly and the range of the network was greatly increased.......great, job done...not!
After about 3 hours the iMac lost the connection and the TC disappeared from the Airport Utility pane and refused to reappear. I checked but also couldn't connect or see any network on the laptop or iPhone, so have dismissed a fault with the iMac. I finally got things back up after doing a power reset of the TC, but after a few hours same problem occurred, and occurred and occurred. By clicking the Airport Utility icon on the top right of the screen and following the prompts from 'no Internet connection', I can at least get things up and working without a power reset of the TC, but the connection still drops after 2-5 hours each time.
My first call to Apple Support led to a full reset and re-config of both the TC and AX, setting the extended network up as I had done originally. The only difference was an iMac reset (alt/cmd P&R on power up) and changing the 2.4Ghz channel from 1 to 11. This had no affect and the connection drop-out problem continued.
My second call to Apple Support led to me being passed to a Level 2 Techie, who first suggested that I tried disabling the Guest Network - tried it, and it made no difference. I was then told to try a WDS network, which whilst not losing connection, is slower and has less range than the original extended network and frankly sounds a cop-out.
Has anyone had a similar problem, anyone solved the problems, can anyone offer any help or advice please.. I'd appreciate any input....thanks.

Similar problem here. Cable Modem (Moto SB6120)->AEBS (802.11n dual-band)>AX (802.11n) for wireless connection to MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.2. AEBS configured as dual-band: 801.11a/n at 5GHZ and 801.11b/g/n at 2.4 GHZ. AX configured to wirelessly extend the AEBS 5GHz 802.11a/n network. I am able to run on the extended 5GHz network (via AX) for varying lengths of time, until the internet connection dies. When this occurs, I am able to switch over to the 2.4GHz network to get back online. Solution up until now has been to unplug the AX, then plug it back in. After the AX restarts, I am able to hop back onto its 5GHz signal and get to the internet. However, the internet connection on this band will drop again after some time.
I was on the phone with Apple Support twice in the past week to get this resolved, but no joy. Senior Advisor seemed to think that my AX was working properly, and that that the problem could be with my AEBS -- perhaps the 5GHz antenna might be bad in my AEBS? Seems odd to me, since both my AEBS and AX are less than 2 months old...
I just read the post from LocoDoc and decided to see if I could replicate the problem. Sure enough, when I am connected to the internet via my AX extended 5GHz network signal and a Time Machine backup starts, the internet connection quits. Only recourse is to restart the AX. Note that I do not experience this problem with Time Machine while connected wirelessly straight to the AEBS 5GHz signal. Only when I am connected to the "extended" signal via the AX.

  • Creating and Extended Network with 2 Airport Express Units

I had an extended network using 2 express units but one of them broke. The old network was setup with an older version of Airport Utility and I can't seem to repeat the set up a new network with the new express unit I have bought.
The simple setup procedure using Airport Utility 5.5.1 only appears to allow you to 'join' the remote Express unit to an existing network, there is no 'extend remotely' option.
I remember doing it last time by creating a WDS network which agrees with instructions I have found here - http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2009/03/taming-an-airport-express-wds.html
I set up the first Express as a base station with a network and select 'Participate in a WDS network' and 'Allow this network to be extended' under the wireless tab. Under the WDS tab I 'Allow wireless clients' and add the hardware address of the second express unit.
I then update the express unit but I get a WDS error which states, "This Airport wireless device is set up as part of a WDS network but no other AirPort wireless devices were found."
This seems to be a chicken and egg situation.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Alan

    Alan, welcome to the discussions!
It appears that you want to set up a WDS arrangment, correct?
But, I can't figure out whether you want to configure it with a "base" and two "remotes", or whether you want to configure it with a "base", "relay" and "remote"
Can you clarify? I'll send you a link with instructions from forum expert user Tesserax with step by step instructions. Just need to know what set of instructions to send.

  • Airport Express access over 'Extended' network (Time Capsule)

    Hello everyone,
I've seen several posts similar to this, and I've come pretty far in figuring this out but the final roadblock is scratching my head.
I purchased an Airport Express a few days ago to get my xbox 360 onto the internet without running a wire and without giving Microsoft my 100 dollars. I had it working under WDS but WDS trashed my network speed. I found out about the 802.11n version of 'extending' the network tonight. Got it all setup, so much easier than WDS!
So I slap my xbox 360 ethernet cable into the Airport Express and go to watch some Netflix. Turns out I can't get to the internet...I've got the thing on the network. It's got an IP, subnet looks good, gateway looks good.
I tried to ping it from my iMac and I can't get to it.
    My network looks like this...
FIOS -----> Actiontek Router --(Bridge)--> Time Capsule --(extended network)--> Airport Express ---(ethernet) --> Xbox360
    Thanks for any help,
    Cheers.

    Hi
When you try and ping the Xbox where are you doing it from, i.e. do you have a laptop that is a wireless client of the TC? What IP address is your XBox getting? What IP address is on the station that you are pinging from? What is the IP address of the Express itself? Can you ping the Express?
You mention that the Express has a solid green led right? What if you move the laptop to be ethernet client of the Express, can the laptop now access the internet?
    cheers

  • Can't reliably connect to network with 5 AEs config'd with 'extend network'

To accommodate a large house, thick walls, and detached guest house I setup five airport Ex's using the 'extend network' option. One is connected to the cable modem and the other four extend. All four get green lights. I get good reception in most places but it appears that I often don't connect to the closest AE, even when only a few feet away. In some cases my signal will go from full to zero in the span of a few feet. The network is the all n/5Ghz mode.
When checking the logs of each of the AEs I found that I wasn't connecting to the closest unit and in the case of the farthest AE I never connected to it. When I stepped a few feet away from the farthest AE I lost all signal.
    1. There's no relay or remote option when 'extending network'. Is there a way to force connection to a particular AE?
    2. Is there a way to prioritize among the AEs? Like with networks.
The logs show three AEs connecting to the Main AE and the fifth one connecting to one of the the three relays. Is there a maximum daisy chain length?

I checked my 4 extremes and found that the 3 mac mini's, 2 powerbook's, 1 imac, and 1 xserve do connect to the closest extreme.
I have 1 extreme in the middle of the 2nd floor as the gateway. An extreme on the third floor for 2 mac mini's, an extreme on the far end of the second floor for an imac and a powerbook, and extreme on the 1st floor for a mac mini, powerbook, and xserve.
One item for consideration to help control access is by manipulating the min connect speed dialog box. The default is 1 mb. Up that number until your clients become ineligble to connect to distant routers. As cleints move away from routers, their connection speed reduces.

  • Extending Network and Gaming Consoles

I have a airport extreme set up in my office. Downstairs I have 4 gaming consoles, which require fast internet speeds other wise it effects game play. The signal where 2 of my consoles are do not get great reception. So I know I can use an airport express, plug it in where I get reception downstairs and have it extend the range of my network.
However, I have 2 questions about this:
    1) I have my extreme set up for N and my gaming consoles are G. The extreme is backwards compatible, but will the same hold true if I add an Express to the network? Will my G consoles still work?
    2) In my head I think this would slow down the speed. I would think my console would have to go through an express, then the express sends up to my extreme, then finally out to the internet. Would adding an express slow the connection at all because now it has one extra point it travels through?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

The 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can be added to your network configuration to extend the wireless range of the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). If you configure the overall extended network for the "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" radio mode, your "g" game consoles should be able to connect.
    2) In my head I think this would slow down the speed. I would think my console would have to go through an express, then the express sends up to my extreme, then finally out to the internet. The bottom line ... yes, extending the network and support for "g" clients will reduce the overall bandwidth available for the wireless network. If bandwidth performance is critical, you may want to consider switching to an all Ethernet-based solution.

  • WDS or Extend Network?

From what I have read on here, using "extend network" and WDS all cut bandwidth in half - which has also been my experience.
My problem is I have cable internet, and the "strongest signal" comes in on the basement - where I have my modem and a 1TB Time Capsule. That is my "WDS main".
In the next room I have an Airport Express in the entertainment center set up as a WDS remote.
There is another AX on the main floor (one floor up) set up in the same way.
On the next floor up, hard-wired to an iMac is an Airport Extreme (fast ethernet) which is set up as a WDS Relay to the Time Capsule. It has one client, the last Airport Express on the third floor.
I am getting just horribly slow connection on the iMac on the second floor. I'm sure this is because of the WDS setup.
Would "extend wireless network" work better?
Would changing the TC and the AEBS to 5GHz help the iMac surf a little more tolerably?
How does that affect the other Express base stations?
Ideally - the internet signal would originate somewhere more in the middle of the house. But unfortunately, that is not the case.
Does anyone have any other ideas I haven't thought of as far as getting signal everywhere?
A major factor in this as well is that I would like to stream to the Express' using AirTunes.
    Thank you!

My current setup has turned out to be both fast and reliable. My TC is connected to a cable modem with Ethernet. The TC is also connected via Ethernet to a Belkin Pre-N wireless router. The TC is set in bridge mode, 802.11n (5 GHz only). The Belkin handles routing and is set for 802.11b/g only. The TC has handled backups of my MB Pro just as fast in this setup as it did when I had it serving as the router on a separate 802.11n only network. The MB Pro and an Apple TV are my only n clients. The other network clients, an old PB G4 and a network printer, are both g.
Although having separate g and n networks worked, it was inconvenient because when I wanted to print from my MB Pro, I would have to get into Airport and shift from the n to the g network, and them back to n when I wanted to do backups, which I soon grew tired of doing.

  • Sudden Extended Network Slowdown

I have two ABS. The second one is used to extend the network of course. I had set them up as a WDS network, with no problems whatsoever. A MacPro is connected to the client ABS by ethernet, and I frequently use a MacBook Pro wirelessly connected to the client. Speed has always been excellent on my 3mb connection.
But suddenly the remote connections crawl along. Speakeasy says I'm getting 458 kbps, well under my upload rate. There are occasional bursts of speed. The MacBook doesn't even recognize the network unless I take it within close range of the primary base stateion. No significant changes preceded this change. I have tried switching to the "extend network" option, but there doesn't seem to be a meaningful increase in speed. (Though the 'book now spots the network.)
I don't know if it's related, but my iMac has been experiencing an internet slowdown, even though it is directly connected to the primary ABS by ethernet. The 'book continues to zip along pretty good so long as it is in the same room with the primary ABS.
I did search, but I couldn't find any postings like this one.
    Thanks in advance.

    Sure,
They are actually independent of the apple gear in that they are simply attached as wireless access points to provide for the wireless g side of my network. Their IP's are static and they provide my windows machines and gaming consoles their wireless feed.
The two Airport Extremes and Airport Express's make up the foundation of my 5 GHz wireless N network for my Apple systems. The two airport express's not only extend my network but also work as airtunes devices in my house.
So....the AExpress do not extend the linksys units at all... just the 5 GHz N. The problem I am having is that one of the AExpress units is linking to the AExtreme that is farther away from it....giving it a very poor connection and hence extending a very poor signal. I would like to get it to attach to the closer unit....and would prefer to do it without having to utilize MAC filtering if that is possible.
I have other MBP's and MB's that connect periodically and using MAC filtering would be a pain.

  • Extended Network Error

Hey guys, I hope one of you have an answer for this problem I am facing:
I bought an Airport Express (v. 7.6.4) about 6 months ago and it was working perfectly. I haven't moved the A.E. at all.
I come home one day and there is a flashing amber light on the A.E. I go to my iMac (v. 10.8.5) look on Airport Utility (v. 6.3.1) and its says Extended Network with an orange light beside it.
It tells me to make sure that it is in range (which is irrelevant because above it says that the connection is excellent, and it is physically well in range), and the password is the same (which it is), and that it is set-up correctly (as far as I'm concerned I set it up correctly - just go to 'Other Wi-Fi Devices' and follow the instructions from there) and that it is working correctly (-maybe thats the problem??).
If I click 'Ignore', the A.E. turns green, but doesn't actually extend the network.
I've tried hard, and factory resets, and nothing has changed.
Thanks in advance for the responses.

Full network reset.. restart in order.. modem.. AE.. then Express with a few minutes gap between them..
Otherwise a full reset of everything and start over.. make sure the AE first is fully connected and working to the router.. probably in Bridge as your NZ ISP do not support PPPOE generally.. then setup Express again.. if it fails.. no problem do it again..
This time lock in down.. and most important DO NOT USE 7.6.4 it was is and ever shall be a lousy revision.. go back to 7.6.1 which was the last one that actually worked.
Factory reset.. use all smb naming.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric for everything in the network.
Then fix the wireless channels so they don't wander all over the place..
Install 5.6 airport utility since that is still possible in Mountain Lion.. it is far superior to v6.. or at least you can see what is happening.
There is no log view in v6.. you can see the whole log and how the wireless clients are working in v5.. all at once..
How to load 5.6 into later Lion & ML
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
    Here is what v5 offers.
Here is the equivalent from v6 toyland utility. Notice how pretty pictures predominate.. No hard core info .. whatsoever. No idea really what is going on.
Even the dotted lines to indicate wireless are actually wrong.. they do not connect like that all.. so the picture is not even accurate.. both extended routers are connected independently to the main router.. not as shown in this shot.. with pretty lines drawn that seem to indicate they are connected to each other.

  • Assigning PCs to each Airport device in an extended network

    Hey,
I live in a two storey house with the ADSL modem positioned at the front of the house, and with an office upstairs towards the back of the house. In order to get the internet working in the office, i have setup the following:
Airport Express - connected to ADSL modem (ground floor)
Airport Extreme - extended network over 5Ghz (ground floor)
Airport Express - extended network over 5Ghz (first floor)
    I've used 2.5Ghz also...
I've got a problem where my macbook pro and other devices will connect to the airport extreme rather than the 2nd airport express which would provide the best connection. I'm also experiencing inconsistent performance for example, during the week i was getting anywhere from 5 to 10Mb/s but today anywhere between 0 to 3Mb/s.
I am thinking that Access Controls based on MAC addresses would be the best way to force the devices to connect to the correct base station, but every time i have tried this it had broken the links between the devices.
Can anyone suggest the best way to take care of this?
IF you need clarification on anyting let me know.

If (as the discussion group section name implies), you have an Apple AirPort base station, you can do that in AirPort Utility. Select you base station, put it into "manual setup" mode, select the Internet panel, select the DHCP tab, then click the plus sign below "DHCP Reservations". In the resulting window you can choose how to identify the camera. I'd choose "MAC address" if you know it. If you don't, pull down the "Base Station" menu and select "Logs and Statistics". In the resulting window select the "DHCP Clients" tab. Look through that list until you can identify the camera.

I have set up the timed access via mac address as per the instructions and all works great if i don't extend the network as i am directly (via wireless) connected to the Extreme base station and the access control works.
Now when i extend the network via the express, clients connect to this but it removes the access control as i have not limited the express's access as i need it to serve different clients. How do I have the express base station inherit the extreme base stations access controls so it limits access in the same way? I don't want to limit the access of the express as different access clients need to access this extended network at the same time.

  • Wds vs extended network questions

little background first...task is to setup a closed WPA2 wireless network consisting of 4 mac minis (duo cores/10.4.10 fully updated) and 3 or 4 AEBS' on the 5GHz band. One AEBS will be connected via ethernet to an existing router (DHCP) while the others need to extend the network. I've had the masses working exceptionally well as a WDS (main/relay/remote) and as an extended network (main/ext/ext/ext) in a test area but have a few questions i've been unable to find answers to:
    1. As an extended network, how many AEBS' can be setup to extend the network? (as bridges)
    2. Any way to enable/select the 5GHz band for a WDS setup?
    3. All the mini's except for one with Airport Admin 5.1 installed join the network automatically after sleep, shutdown etc. The fix on the support page works but is this issue possibly due to the new airport admin util? I'd like to keep the WPA2 security in place even tho it's a closed network and have a local machine able to administer these things if possible.
    cheers for a quick response.

shaker440, Welcome to the discussion area!
    1. As an extended network, how many AEBS' can be setup to extend the network? (as bridges)
I'm sure there is a maximum but I don't know the number.
    2. Any way to enable/select the 5GHz band for a WDS setup?
WDS is an 802.11b/g feature and therefore not supported when using 5 GHz. However 802.11n has a new "extend network" feature.
I'd like to keep the WPA2 security in place even tho it's a closed network and have a local machine able to administer these things if possible.
Is this a question? WPA2 is great security and you should use it. A "closed" network is a deception and only fools you into thinking it adds any security. The SSID/Network name is still broadcast between any connected client and the base station. Therefore the network name is easily detectable.
Any machine can be used to configure the AEBS at any time. There is no machine designated as the controller or admin.

  • I'm confused please help me...using airport to extend network

I bought an apple airport extreme base station a few days ago. I was told I could use it to extend my networks range. I currently have tv Internet and phone through xfinity/Comcast. My xfinitity router is an SMC and I need to use it cuz the phone runs off it. I live in a 4 level townhome and it's range *****. Doesn't work in all rooms on the 4th floor. So I bought the base station and hooked it up to the SMC via an Ethernet and thought I set up right. But I noticed the range didn't improve so I opened the airport utility on my MacBook pro I clicked on the base station on the next window under wireless under a drop down I chose "extend network" or something like that. It said wait a few moments for update then I got an error. So I called apple to ask what I was doing wrong and they said I couldn't use an airport to extend the network of a 3rd party router. Not unless I put them in different rooms and connected them with a super long Ethernet. So now I'm confused is that right?  All I want is a better signal in my house. Please someone help me and explain to me how I make that happen..

I wasn't able to figure out how to set up the roaming network.
It is the same thing that you have set up now except you use the same wireless network name, same security settings and password as the "main" router and make sure that Bridge Mode is being used.
We can easily troubleshoot this if you want.
Now I'm just wondering if I could have done the same thing with the cheaper express base station?
You could, but it would not be dual band operation like you have now, and no more than 10 wireless clients would be able to connect to the AirPort Express. You also have available Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme in case you need to connect a device that way. In addition, the Extreme has a much better Wi-Fi antenna than the Express.

  • HT4259 With extended network, which device do I connect to?

I set up my Time Capsule as my base station and extended the network using an Airport Express. My question is, when I am logged onto the base station, will my computer automatically select whichever signal is stronger, the time capsule or the airport express... OR do I need to manually select whichever one is stronger?
I am guessing it will automatically select but I have not read this anywhere and would like to confirm.
    THANKS!

will my computer automatically select whichever signal is stronger, the time capsule or the airport express...
Yes, that's the whole idea behind having an extended network.

I have a Time Capsule where I have set up a wireless network access list…and extended the network using an Airport Express unit. Thanks for any help…this doesn't seem clear from what I've read/seen.

Unfortunately, they are not automatically applied to each base station in an extended network. You would have to manually enter the exact same list in each base station.
