Climbing "Time Remaining" in Compressor 2

Sometimes, when compressing large jobs out of compressor 2, the "time remaining" will climb higher and higher and the job stops advancing. I am working on a macbook pro and the files are on my external hard drive (250 gb seagate) connected by USB 2. Sometimes I am able to stop/cancel the job, unplug the hard drive and start over again and sometimes I have to reboot before it will tell me that it is safe to disconnect the hard drive (even after quitting all apps).
Any suggestions?

Hi:
Are you running Compressor 2.3 Universal Binary?

In 'mail', after importing mailboxes the process gets stuck on '1619 of 72826' and 'time remaining' climbs infinitely. Please suggest a solution.
I converted my mail boxes from POP to imap for the purpose of syncing all my devices. I backed up my mail boxes and further more perfomed a timemachine backup.
Upon restoring ther mailboxes, either by manually copying them to the mailboxes folder, and restoring a timemachine backup, both pocesses result in the above problem.
    Please recomend a solution.

  • Compressor 3.0.5 "unknown time remaining"

Each time I try to compress a file, the time remaining reads "unknown time remaining" and it doesn't move. When I send files to compressor from Final Cut, FCP and Compressor both lock up when I click submit. I have tried all the solutions listed in other post such as deleting the preferences, using compressor repair, uninstalling compressor and the entire final cut studio, but none work. I have reinstalled leopard done multiple times and it will work for a while, then I get the same problem again. I have tried to do Time Machine restores to backup taken while it was working, but it will not work when I restore it. Without compressor, I have great trouble making DVD out of my footage shot in HD. Help Please!
    thanks in advance

Just as an addon, I found a fix offered by Digital Rebellion in another post somewhere in here. They have a (free) compressor repair utility, amongst other things on their website. I just ran it and now my Compressor works again. Thanks Digital Rebellion!

  • COMPRESSOR 3 NOT WORKING, i just get "Unknown time remaining"

    Ok, I'm running on a g5 tower with 10.4.9 OSX, it's a 2x2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 4 GB 667 Mhx DDR2 FB-DIMM.
I just installed FCS 2 last week. I'm converting 24 minute quicktime files to mp2 in compressor. First 5 episodes work great. So then i set up 7 more episodes and go home hoping that when i come into work today all will be converted. But no, the computer froze shortly after i left. Ok, no biggie, reboot try again. But now, when i try to compress something, instead of counting down telling me how much time is left on the conversion, it just says "unknown time remaining" But i let it sit overnight AGAIN, and nothing got converted.
I tried re-installing FCS 2, didn't fix it, I tried deleting the preferences, didn't fix it. I've tried changing the location, different formats, different EVERYTHING and NOTHING WORKS.
I've searched all morning on many forums for help but can't find anything. I've found that other people have this problem, but no ideas how to fix it. PLEASE PLEASE, if anyone knows how to fix this I'd be so thankful. My job is potentially on the line hear as I have to have this files delivered on DVD very soon.
Oh, and I also tried updating my compressor to 3.01, but that didn't do anything either.
Ok, I pray to God someone can help me.

Hey all. I was having the same "unknown time remaining" issue until I found this post. Special thanks to all of you for the help. This is a particularly annoying bug that I have been able to repeat endlessly and I will say that the fix works. After I downloaded the updates for my purchased final cut 2, I was able to fix the problem. However, after 10 or so uses of Compressor, it seems to reappear. I have made a copy of the qmaster file on my desktop and by emptying it, and then "reset background processing", I have been able to start a new compression batch. It seems that I am asking a lot of compressor because I will open about 100 five minute videos, then set up my own single h264 compression to 800kpbs, 640 X 480, with brightness and contrast tweaked, and my watermark added... Compressor has been quitting almost every time. When I do 2 or 3 videos at a time, it seems to work fine. (btw: I have 4 gigs of RAM) Does anyone know if Compressor is supposed to be able to output 100 videos like this? Do i need a Mac Pro with 16 gigs RAM? Does that Sorensons Squeeze work any better? Any advice is appreciated. peace, dix.

  • Compressor: Unknown time remaining

Anytime I try to export a file through compressor I have this "unknown time remaining" and I can't figure it out!I've tried deleting all the Compressor and QMaster files according to the guidelines on the uninstaller and then reinstalling, but it's still there!
    Help!

Open Batch Monitor (Click on the Batch Monitor, top right batch window), then click on my computer, do you see any job on? If you do delete theme and start over.

  • Compressor+Qmaster ...time remaining 00:00:00

    Hi,
I use Compressor t convert 720923.98 footage to 10bit UC 29.97. I created a virtual cluster using 7 cores with QMaster. When I launch the compression everythig seems to go alright AND FAST. Batch shows all the processors working on chunks of the clip. Then, when all the compressing is done, Compressor seem to stall when it's time to put all the pieces back together. It stays at 0:00:00 Time Remaining forever.
Her are the error messages I get:
    in the CONSOLE:
12/06/08 11:48:31 AM Batch Monitor[470] exception caught in -[ClusterStatus getNewStatusFromController:withOptions:withQueryList:]: NSException raised by 'NSPortTimeoutException', reason = 'connection timeout: did not receive reply'
12/06/08 11:53:37 AM Compressor[192] Could not find image named 'MPEG1-Output'.
    Any clue?

Open Batch Monitor (Click on the Batch Monitor, top right batch window), then click on my computer, do you see any job on? If you do delete theme and start over.

  • Media encoder time remaining stops decreasing and processor drops to zero. Time elapsed keeps going up! File won't complete!

    Please help anyone who can.
Firstly I know I have very little RAM on my system, only 4GB but I've been rendering the same kinds of files for weeks with no problems until the last few days.
They biggest issues is as follows:
My timeline in Premiere Pro CC 2014 has 1080p 50mbps MXF footage from a Sony PMW 200 and some similar footage replaced with an After Effects comp for green screen keying.
The clip, approx 2min, starts with a linked comp from after effects, then cuts to the mxf footage and back to a linked comp at the end.
I am exporting via media encoder to h264 1080p. The file rendered fine for about 40min with the processor at 50% approx. The processor then shot up to 99% for 10 mins and the render progress bar
went up to almost 90% complete.
Then the progress bar stopped, the processor dropped to 0%, time remaining is steadily climbing and so is time elapsed. I've tried pausing and un pausing the render que and nothing else is running in background.
I need these files rendered tonight!! I've tried this a few times and this problem keeps occurring sometimes with the remaining time shooting up to 74 hours!!
Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?!
    Windows 7 Professional (64 bit)
    Dell Precision workstation 690
    Intel xeon X5365 3ghz (x2)
    4 GB RAM

Sounds exactly like what is happening to me.  This is frustrating because it was a 30 hour encoding process and the place where it is stuck is right at the very end of the sequence on the 2nd pass, although there is still about 12% of the progress bar remaining.  I guess that this is where it takes all its work and puts the separate files into the single video file. I really don't want to go through this again. The final video file is showing up though and is shown having the size that I am expecting it to be.
Any workarounds to somehow get this unstuck?  I am hesitant to just try and open the file. I am going to try a couple of things and if I am successful at getting this to finish without restarting then I will be sure to post it here.
Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with this problem, but I looked at my system Activity Monitor, and there is a CPU process highlighted in red, it states:
         Adobe QT32 Server (not responding)
    Thirty minutes later...
I was incorrect above as to the actual problem.  I paused the queue encoding that was stuck, then opened up the project again in Premiere Pro only to discover that there was an offline still image which I stupidly had renamed during the day. So I renamed the file back to its original name, reconnected the picture, saved the PP project. Then I started the encoding back up and still no luck.
So I paused the encoding again, went back into the PP project and rendered just the area under question, saved it, and exported it into the queue. Then just to be safe I went to the paused item in AME, and duplicated it adding another version into the queue.
Then I unpaused the encoding and ... SUCCESS!!  Not sure which of the final steps did the trick, but I am guessing that it was the rendering of the part of the sequence that it was stuck on.  Hope this helps someone.

  • Time remaining is increasing!

I'm trying to encode 45 minutes of HD footage using the HD DVD H.264 one hour setting.
When originally submitted, Batch Monitor quoted a time remaining of around 3 hours for the video. The batch is still processing, but the time remaining is slowly going UP instead of down. It now shows a time remaining of 9 hours 47 minutes - and it still rising!
    Can anybody help?

The Apple H.264 encoder automatically calculates the optimal number of passes it needs to encode the movie as it goes along. This means that it doesn't necessarily know how many passes it will need when you first start the encoding process. That is why the time goes up.
If you want to speed up encoding, either set it to single pass (at the expense of visual quality) or optimize Compressor for your computer:

  • After submitting i shows unknown time remaining and seems stuck there

i have used it before and it works but now when i submit it i seems to freeze and show unknown time remaining....

I have had the same problem. I spoke with Apple Care and made the tech aware of all the posts on the Internet and that this flaw in Compressor was a problem with many people using many different kinds of Macs.
He claimed to have never heard of it. We solved the problem temporarily by trashing the cache and the prefs and then making a new account and using that one to compress the video. It didn't always work but it did once so it got me going so I completed the project.
Compressor is a real buggy program and mine doesn't even work anymore. Apple needs to solve this problem or do a make good for us.
    At least do something.

  • Time Machine Backup seems to freeze after a few megabytes saying Estimating TIme Remaining

My MBP (mid 2009, osx10.8.5) seems to take forever to Time Machine Backup.  I'm backing up to an external (USB) disk that has plenty of memory.  THe backup starts (Status window opens), Status says "Backing up 1,314,593 items", climbs to about 310 MB of 325.01 GB and then just sits there with a line that says "Estimating time remaining".  I've let this sit for 2 hours so far and no other messages or errors. I haven't done this in a while and a previous , partial, Time Machine Backup was on this USB drive but I deleted everything on it because there wasn't enough space to do the new Time Machine Backup. It will have to do a full backup I'm sure, so I expect it to take a while to back up over 300GB but I don't see anything being copied to the backup disk, except the "Backups.backupdb" folder.  It stays at about 265MB.

Try D4/3 in the 1st linked article.

  • Job submitted-"Unknown Time Remaining" with no progress. Please help!

This is driving me crazy. I can't figure it out.
I submit a job, I get the message "unknown time remaining" with no progress in the progress bar. Nothing happens.
    I am using an iMac.
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 4 GB
    Version 10.5.8
    Compressor 3
Movie is exported to my desktop from FCP as a Quicktime file. I am using current settings. Audio and video included. Self contained. DV NTSC 48KHz Anamorphic 720x480
The setting I choose is H.264 800Kbps Quicktime 7 compatible. In the inspector under geometry I choose custom (16:9). Destination is desktop.
When I submit, it shows in history but never does anything. Just get that message.
    Please help!

Do you know what else I could use to compress? I'm about to google.
This might help you. I've found Compressor Repair online. Unfortunately it did not fix the problem for me. You might have better luck.

  • Time remaining? Well, that's your guess...

I find it highly annoying that i cannot trust the 'time remaining' in batch monitor.
    Yes i have the latest: 10.4.2, compressor 2.0.1. I have a 2x2,5 Ghz G5.
When 'time remaining' tells me 41 minutes it usually is like 4 hours or so. For a pro-app this is rather stupid. I need to predict when my encoding jobs are ready, my clients ask for it.
Apple, this is important, please get this right.

I for one would like them to do something about the miserably slow GUI in Compressor. Even Java programs not to mention interpreted Basic are faster. What did they write in, Apple Script?

  • Time remaining problem

I've tried using Compressor twice in the space of an hour, when my jobs get to about three quarters the way through the time remaining bar doesn't move any more and the job is at a stand still.

Maybe its just me that needs a little more clarification but are you trying to take VIDEO podcasts and put them onto your player without any conversion? first I don't know how you are doing it because every video i have tried NEEDS conversion because they are usually the wrong size bitrate etc... are you putting these onto your memory card or right onto your player. now to my side.. i have podcasts well over 8 hours and my countdown works fine.. I am also in process of converting 300 the movie onto here and it needs a conversion ( im kinda lying im converting it just to make sure but didnt try to add it before doing so) anyway I think its a slight problem with your player... . if you didnt upgrade your firmware try it( i hate saying these things because these usually NEVER solve the problem)2.try searching the forums for a common problem or check your other mp3, videos to see if it does the same thing3. try converting one file. for instance the one that is suppose to be 90mins and see if it shows correct countdown4. transferring a regular mp3 podcast not video should show the correct time because it really doesnt need conversion unless you are not using zencast5. i havent done any long video podcasts just movies so im not quite sure that may be a small limitation..
anyway take care hope i helped a little...(most of the ideas were just my common sense) hehe

  • Unknow Time Remaining Message

I am trying to export a .mov file at an mpeg2 and in the process screen I keep getting an unkown time remaining message and the progress bar doesn't move. I am using Compressor 3 and I just updated it. What's the problem?

Depending on the type of encode, this could be normal. We need to know what are you trying to create? Are you going to mpeg1, 2 or what? Also, after starting your encode, you can check to see which process is taken up the most cpu usage, if it's compressord, your transcode is progressing as it should. If nothing's using your cpu, thing something ain't working.
