Clip duration in imovie 9

Is it possible to import clips with the same duration as they shot in the HD camera instead of the four second clips that show up automatically?

You may be confusing clips with thumbnails. The default thumbnail length is 5 seconds but you can move the thumbnail slider to adjust this to anything from 1/2 second per thumbnail to a single thumbnail for the whole clip.

  • Can I set clip durations in iMovie 10.0.7 for Yosemite?

In earlier versions of iMovie I was able to go to preferences and display the clip durations as described in this link below. I could also see the approximate position of the entire video while it is playing.
iMovie '11: Display the precise duration of video clips
I am forced to use the current version of iMovie because the older version no longer works for me. I cannot find a similar option in preferences or anywhere else. Has this wonderful feature been removed from this software. Right now if someone asks me to edit starting at a specific position I cannot do it. I have to play the entire video to find the portion of it that they want removed. I am working with fairly long videos and having this feature would really shorten the time for video editing.

Hello and thanks for using Apple Support Communities,
Unfortunately, although iMovie 10 added some great new features and brought a more intuitive user interface, some legacy features were discontinues. Chapter markers are an example. While you cannot add 'chapter' markers, you can still add traditional markers by using the Mark item in the menu bar and then clicking add marker. These will not add chapters, however, and will only allow you to quickly find a spot later in iMovie.
Sorry about that, but if you recently updated iMovie to version 10 from an older version, it is possible that the older version is still on your Mac. You can search for it using Spotlight, the search icon in the menu bar.

  • How to display clip duration in iMovie 10?

This must be a very basic task but I can't find out how to do it im iMovie 10.
I've imported a 10 minute video clip in to iMovie 10.
I want to cut a segment of the 10 minute clip from, say, 6:03 seconds in to the clip until 8:13 in to the clip and place this segment in to another project or just export it as a file.
I can't seem to find a way of doing this. There's no duration timer that would allow me to progress to 6:03, mark it and then progress to 8:13, mark that point and then copy.
There must be a way of doing this (I assume).

I won't comment on how offensive it is to end users for Apple to remove such basic functionality. It seems as if the days of a Mac providing useful functionality out of the box without extra and expensive software are on their way out. This isn't even an advanced feature - and it used to be present.
This is one of the many reasons why so many people use iMovie HD 06.   The display head time is always visible.
You can also use Final Cut Pro X.

  • Can't adjust clip duration of still photos in iMovie '11

Anyone having the same problem? I inserted a still photo in one of my projects in iMovie which has a a clip duration of 5s when added. I clicked the cogwheel icon then chose the inspector to adjust the duration. I've managed to changed it to 3s but after I clicked "Done", the clip duration is still under 5s.
I didn't encountered this problem before in iMovie '10 and I've searched over at Google and found out that many iMovie '11 users have the same dilemma.
Any workaround you can suggest? Thanks!

"problems setting duration for still photos and transitions in iMovie '11"
A number of people have experienced the same problem and written about it on discussions. Lots of difference solutions as well. If you search using the title quoted above, you can read the solution I found. It's more complicated than it should be. I've never had to fiddle as much with duration times for transitions and still photos. Nevertheless, the steps I have described work for me. You will also find the steps another reader offered that may work for you if all of your transitions are set for the same durations and all of the still photos are as well.

  • When I adjust the duration of a clip or transaction, iMovie automatically adjusts the duration of another clip; how can I shut this feature off?

In iMovie when I adjust the duration of a photo clip or transaction, iMovie automatically changes the duration of another clip; how can I shut this feature off?

Ok, well you won't get a "speed scale" indicator when editing a title clip. You can only adjust duration. Now, is there music attached to the title clip? Are you adjusting the TITLE TEXT box ONLY? Try adjusting the clip BELOW Title Text box 1st, then Title Text clip.  Is the Title attached to your own video OR is it one of iMovie's default Titles??

  • How to change the clip's duration under imovie 10.0.3?

How to change the clip's duration under imovie 10.0.3?

This is a new feature introduced in 10.0.3 which works fine for me.  The old way was to select Modify - Fast Forward.  You can only select certain speed ratios but a slider should appear near the top of the clip which allows finer speed adjustment.  have you tried this?

  • Can no longer access iPhoto from the iMovie camera browser..not working. Also the Inspector tool not working properly. Cannot change clip duration.

How can I fix the INSPECTOR Tool?   Clip duration is not working properly, it is very erratic.  You type a number and a different one comes up on the clip.
Suddenly the iPhoto Camera browser in iMovie is not working properly either.  Can not access my iPhotos to include them in iMovie project.

    Have you tried this?
From the "HOME" screen, go to "SETTINGS > PRIVACY > PHOTOS" and see if iMovie is listed in the "PHOTOS" page. If it is, then tap the iMovie switch to "ON"
Now your Videos & Photos should be accessible in the iMovie App.

  • IMovie 8 - Extending Clip Duration

I'm having difficulty extending a .jpg clip duration that has a voiceover. If I extend the "duration" from 4 seconds to 7 seconds, for e.g., to allow for longer voiceover, the .jpg clip runs into the next video frame as merges them as one. I can't extend by using a "handle" on the right either. I've also tried the Command and Option keys (as suggested in documentation) but isn't working out. Can you anyone suggest something that will work (easily)? Thanks.

Are your images and videos at least 41:21? If not, add some placeholders that extend the length of your project to at least 41:21.
You can use the animatics in the Maps section for this. Or use a photo.

  • Can't fully change clip duration...

    Hello all
My students and I are doing a claymation type project and I am having some difficulty changing the clip durations once I've imported the photos into iMovie. I can get them in and changed down to 0:00:14 but not any shorter. I should be able to set them as fast as 0:00:03... If I change the clips individually, I can set them to 0:00:03, but if I try to change more than one at a time, the lowest is 0:00:14. With 500 odd photos for each group, changing the length one clip at a time isn't really a feasible option. Any suggestions?

Yes, the pics have to be in the Timeline before they can be adjusted.
Great that it's now working for you. As a retired teacher myself, I know what it feels like when things don't work as they should, and you have a disgruntled class breathing down your neck! Good luck with the project - sounds interesting.
Here's an explanation of PAL and NTSC:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL
They are Television Broadcasting formats - your part of the world uses NTSC, many other parts use PAL, and some others eg France uses SECAM. They use differing frame rates, so are largely incompatible with each other.

  • Photo Clip Duration

I am trying to edit the clip duration for a still photo down to .5 seconds, however it won't let me do this. Is there a minimum clip duration? I want to add a bunch of photos with a short duration so you only see a short flash of the image.

In iMovie/Preferences, make sure to check "Display Time as HH:MM:SS:Frames". This will allow you to edit to the frame level. .5 seconds in NTSC would be about 15 frames. Set the duration of the photo to 15.
You can go as low as one frame, but there is a trick involved.

  • Can't Find Clip Duration Button

I'm a complete newbie at video editing, trying to start learning…
According to the online tutorial there is supposed to be a clip duration button that appears when the pointer is hovered over a clip that allows one to open a trimming window of some sort. It doesn't come up for me - there is only a hand appearing in place of the pointer.
How do you make the buttons appear?
Message was edited by: Donnie Ashworth

The easiest way is to select the 30 seconds you want by clicking and dragging. Once you have the frames you want selected, you can right-click and choose "Trim to Selection". Be sure to go into Preferences and turn on the Time Codes so you can edit to the specific frame.
If you prefer to edit using the fine edit window, do the same as above, but leave some extra frames on each end so you can fine edit to the specific frame using the fine editor.
This video tutorial shows how to do this. I recommend you watch all the video tutorials.

  • Help with clip portion from iMovie to iDVD

    Hi,
I had a question about the portion and duration of a movie clip (not an image) that can be put into the iDVD (5) drop zones. I tried to put a certain clip (with a specific beginning and end with the allotted 15 seconds and it plays the original clip, the pre-edited clip that was originally captured before I edited the movie itself. I've tried saving it to the Movies folder and selecting them for the drop zones, and I've tried straight up dragging them from the iMovie windows to the drop zones and those both work, but I want to know how to select which part of the clip to be played, because I don't want unedited clips flashing about my drop zones, doesn't look right, you know? Well I would greatly appreciate anybody's assistance, sorry for the paragraph of complaints.

    Jacob,
    Welcome the the iDVD forum!
but I want to know how to select which part of the clip to be played, because I don't want unedited clips flashing about my drop zones, doesn't look right, you know?
If you "share>quicktime" and choose "selected clips only" in iMovie it should export an edited clip (.mov) file that you can use in the drop zone in iDVD.
Somtimes you might need to use "Split video clip at playhead" in iMovie to get just the parts you want.
    John B.
An alternative method is to drill into the iMovie project package, find the shared movie for iDVD, copy it, and choose only the part you want for the iDVD menu using QT Pro..........

  • Photo clips - duration keeps reverting

I am making a stop-frame animation and have all the photos in iphoto. I import them into imovie and try and adjust the clip duration. I'm looking at 0.2sec for most of the stills but some need to be longer. When I adjust the timing in clip adjustments/duration it either ignores this setting or replaces it with 0.04sec.
I have installed all updates and even reinstalled imovie (restart). I'm also sure that KB effects are off. Is this a glitch?
Don't make me take all this on to Sony Vegas on the PC!

The first thing to check is iMovie/Preferences. Do you have a check mark next to "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames" (recommended)
If not, you can edit to the nearest 1/10th of a second. If you have this checked, you can edit to the nearest frame (25 per second for Pal, 30 per second for NTSC). So .02 is not 2/100 of a second. .02 is 2 frames out of 30.
You cannot edit to less than 1 frame.
I think you may be right that there is a limit of 4 frames. Jon Walker has posted a workaround, but it is kind of tedious of you have thousands of these. [here it is|http://web.me.com/jrwalker4/QuickNotes/iMovie08-09/Entries/2008/4/25_Tutorial024.html]
You may want to use QuickTime Pro. This [MacWorld video|http://www.macworld.com/article/141637/2009/07/timelapsevideo.html] discusses time-lapse, which is similar.

  • Is there a way to copy referenced video clips into the iMovie library?

When I import video clips into an iMovie event it seems that iMovie uses only a reference to the file. When files are moved things get horrible broken soon. I noticed that iMovie does actually copy video clips into your library when you convert your library from iMovie'11 to iMovie'13. Is there a way to copy video clips into the iMovie library when importing them so that they don't get lost?
