Clip gets cropped when importing to iMovie 9

Hi I am trying to import video from a Samsung HD camera into iMove 9. The clips appear in the event file but when I play them the last 5 or seconds are not there - they seem to have been clipped in the import process.
Any one got any ideas?

So the playback stops altogether after about the 20 minute mark?  It doesn't just start a new clip?
The scene length limit shouldn't matter assuming it's unchecked.  You might also uncheck the Start a new clip at each scene break.
Is the camera running on batteries?  If so, try using the AC adapter.
You can try importing once more if you want, but if it were me, I wouldn't waste the time.  I'd just make a new clip of the missing portion with enough overlap to be able to crossfae from the audio on the first clip to the audio on the second clip.  That should help minimize the audio gap.
The trick is to allow the music crossfade to complete prior to the edit in picture. It will take a bit of trial and error to get the sync right, but I think it will still be fast than completely re-importing from tape.

  • Photo from iPhoto gets cropped when inserted into iMovie

My old video (miniDV camcorder, DV) is 4:3 and lower resolution than my photos (16:9, good digicam). I inserted a vertical photo into a video project, and the photo gets truncated on playback.
I expected it to be scaled to fit when shown on the screen, like iPhoto does.
Am I doing something wrong? Please tell me iMovie handles inserted photos sensibly.

WHat version of iMovie, and iPhoto?
THIs forum is for iMovie iOS (iPads, iPhones).
Are you talking about iMovie for Mac?

    Hi
Most processes in Non destructive Video editing is based on that the raw-material is safe and intact. So by trashing it most things can or will go wrong.
So e.g. in iMovie project - there is NO Movie - just a small text document refering to Your raw-material, audio files and photos (within or not in iPhoto Library) on how they are to act together to Play Your Movie.
And by changing any of them the Movie project will be affected or destroyed.
reg. iDVD there is also a link back to iMovie - Most famous to set of the iDVD BUG !
To do that - one starts a new iDVD project and add movies etc. Then find something i one movie in need to be adjusted. Closing iDVD and returning to iMovie and doing this. Then when back to iDVD it will notice and ask You to Up-date or Cancel. Neither works. The iDVD project is harmed. All Chapters now point to Chapter One and more strange things happens.
the medicine I use - I start a brand new iDVD Project and re-do it and hopefully not fine any more to be fixed in the movie.
This indicates the strong link inbetween iDVD and iMovie and I would not touch anything in iMovie till DVD is Burned and Ready AND Plays Well !

  • Can't get Audio to play through when importing using iMovie '09

Anyone know how to get audio to work when importing DV footage into iMovie '09.
It used to work fine in iMovie HD. Any ideas??

I've just spent a while trying to figure this out ...
I used this feature (monitoring audio on import) all the time in previous versions of iMovie ...
Kind of essential I think ...
Now we have a new 'feature' in iMovie where you can't monitor audio during import.
Wouldn't it be nice if Apple documented this somewhere (maybe on iMovie Help ...).
I understand about hi-speed import from other (non DV) formats ...
So why not just let the user hit the 'mute' button if they don't want to listen to audio on import ?
Pretty simple - rather than having this somewhat arbitrary rule imposed on iMovie users ?
The only way to monitor audio during import is to plug headphones into the camera itself.
Which means we are wearing a thing with a wire attached - making the BT headset capability of the Mac somewhat redundant.
Oh well ... one step forward, one step back.

  • Screen Capture Video Loses Quality When Imported Into iMovie - WHY?

I am using screen capture software to make a video of my screen at 1024x768. The video is for a tutorial. I want to use iMove to get things like transitions and such into the movie, and to add text and audio. The problem is that, although the video looks great in QuickTime, it loses quality significanly when I import into iMove. The text on the screen is blurry, and the quality of everything else is terrible as well.
Is this s limitation of iMove? Can screen capture video be imported? Does it only work with DV?
Also, I tried to convert the file to many other formats, from QuickTime to MPEG-4, so it's not the file type.
If anyone can help me out, I've be very grateful.
    Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Your dimensions are getting in the way. iMovie converts your 1024X768 to a DV Stream file that is 720X480.
One workaround would be to set your display resolution smaller. Try 800X600 (if your windows fit that size).
If you're using Snapz Pro you should set your window capture to 640X480. This size will import nicely into iMovie.
An even better way would be to do all of the work using QuickTime Pro. Again a 1024X768 QT.mov file would not fit on the most common display settings used. When you add the QT Player window the controller would be below the screen and not accessible for most users.
800X600 would make a better file (smaller, too). It would still be 4:3 aspect and would also import into iMovie.

Does anyone know what the keyboard shortcut is for adding a clip to the queue when importing from a P2 card? Thanks!

That would be the Log Clip button which is defaulted to F2.

  • Quality loss and blurriness when imported to iMovie from Sony Handycam

I have a Sony Carl Zeiss Lens 40x Optical Zoom Handycam. The quality is crystal clear on the camera..but once it is imported into iMovie, it becomes somewhat distorted. Please help! I need to upload this video to Youtube ASAP.. I'm already past my deadline. Thanks in advance

    Hi
Sony Carl Zeiss Lens 40x Optical Zoom Handycam - Yes but this referes to many different types.
    What Sony Camera do You use ? e.g. TRV-900E, PC-330 or ?
How was it set to record ? 4x3 SD-Video (as on old CRT-TVs or 16x9 or HD or what ?
My Camera can record to Memory-Card when in Photo mode - and these movies are in a very low quality just to be small enough to add to an e-mail. Can this be what You've done ?

  • Can't get consistent sound importing to iMovie

    Hello -
I am having trouble when importing home movies from a JVC MiniDV Video Camera to iMovie. The video shows up fine, but the audio is either very choppy or completely silent. I see the audio track, can extract it, but it is nothing like the clear audio that comes from my camera. Any ideas??
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Jim
See if my list is of any help:
    Capture/Import problems:
    a) File-Vault is on - turn it off
    b) don’t Daisy chain camcorder - external hard disk - Mac
    c) Slow hard disk (fragmented: repair permissions, repair hard disk, use a faster hard disk)
    d) Something is occupying the CPU/System, like other programs, Internet etc.
    e) Bad RAM-chips
    f) drop outs on the miniDV-tape - make a camera to camera copy on a tape which You have previous recorded with a time code (dummy recording).
    g) FW-wire cable OK?
    h) Break in the time-code on the miniDV tape (make a camera to camera copy on a tape which is prerecorded with nothing/anything so that the tape has a time-code from beginning to the end)
    i) defective camera TRY IT ON ANOTHER MAC !
    j) remove bookmarks in iMovie project
    k) Do You have desktop pictures or screen-savers active? Try turning them off.
    l) Updating - OS has to be a clean install - not an update eg from X.3.x to X.4.x (no good)
OS X.4.0-3 needs a clean install to work (I use X.3.9)
    m) Updating QT and/or other updates (to 7 needs v6 to be cleaned out first)
QT v.7 needs a clean install to work (I use 6.5.2)
    n)
Have you tried the crazy fix:
Open GarageBand, play a few notes, close it and reopen iMovie. The camera should import fine now.
    Sue/SDillini
    o) Trash: com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iMovie3.plist : files (Xinram)
FILEVAULT is a way/program to protect files from prying eye - but it slows
down the computer. (See in System "-prefs" - under the Apple up to the left)

  • How do I keep .mov clips from being squashed when imported into iMovie HD6?

Hi there! First time poster... Hoping someone can help me out with this:
I've stupidly shot some footage with my digital camera sideways, portrait-style. I used QuickTime Pro 7 to rotate the footage clockwise, preserving the aspect ratio, so now the .mov clips are 480x640 pixels (so 3:4, instead of the standard 4:3).
When I import the clips into iMovie HD 6, the footage gets squashed to fit the 4:3 screen, making everyone look shorter and fatter. The Help file advises that iMovie "automatically adjusts incoming footage to fit the screen size (aspect ratio) of your project".
Is there some way I can opt out of this automatic adjustment? I'd prefer to have black bands on the sides of the screen than squashed video!
Thanks for any help you can give. Cheers!

You'll need to make an all black 640X480 image file and add it to your video.
Adjust its layer so it is in the background and then reduce the dimensions of your video so it fits over it.
Bring this new file into iMovie.

  • Why do screenshot borders get cropped when they're imported?

Hi, FrameMaker 10 Windows 7, images created in SnagIt 10 and then SnagIt 8.
    Hi,
First of all thank you for your great help, especially Van Kurtz! Now I have another problem.
When I take a screenshot, I put a border around it in SnagIt. I import the images in anchored frames, which I've managed to tame.  However, the image imports without borders. I use 300dpi and tried reducing to 275, but I can't reduce any more as the company requests that we use 300 and also, the images would be blurry.
After I import, I hold the Shift key drag the border of the image to get it the size I want in the anchored frame (BTW is there any way to do this automatically, as in InDesign?) and there is still no border (and there wasn't one when the image was originally imported).
Why is the border cropped?  This usually  happens at only one or two sides, not completely, usually the bottom or right sides, and randomly.  The image is always well inside the anchored frame.
Thank you so much in advance!
    Susan
PS  I thought this might be solved when I saved the doc as PDF, but no.  And the printed doc is identical to the PDF on the screen.
PSS  Is this the fault of the older version of SnagIt (8)?  I used SnagIt 10 til my trial ran out and then was forced to switch to 8.  It may just be that I didn't notice this problem until recently, but some of my images in the document ARE okay with borders complete.

    > The choices are expressed in dpi with inches (or points or picas) in parentheses.
For a bitmap imported as EPS (and, I suspect, PDF), the choice is a percentage, default 100%. FM won't give you any clue about what the originating dpi is, so you have to know, if you care. And the preview image is of no visual help, because it will be a coarse 72 dpi indexed color at 100%.
    > NOTE this does NOT change the logical resolution (dpi) of the image, just the physical display size.
Strictly speaking, it does change the dpi. What doesn't change is the overall pixel dimensions. If you import a 1x1inch 100x100 dpi screenshot TIFF at 2x2 inches, it will be 50 dpi (but still 100x100 pixels).
Borders can be applied by Framemaker itself, and they will be vector, and not subject to scaling, aliasing or vanishing at small scales. Applying borders prior to rasterization or in a raster editor often has unhappy results.
Next hurdle: rendering to PDF. Save-as, Print-to or Distill are all subject to the Job Options, which can easily have defaulted to "subsample to really blurry with nasty compression artifacts". Make sure the settings preserve the res you desire for the data structure involved (bitmap, contone gray or contone color). e.g. "downsample to 300 dpi for images above 450 dpi", and LZW or ZIP compression for screenshots, as a rule.

  • Cropped photos -import into iMovie, but reverts to original

Anyone have this problem? Cropped photos in iPhoto and iView look fine in their own habitat, but when I import them into iMovie, they revert back to their original uncropped photo - frustrating since these are photos eliminating the letterbox, so there are black lines on two sides, so the cropping within iMovie does not work.
    Thank you for any information!

Hi S. Katie - your problem with iPhoto is most likely because when you crop them in the iPhoto window you are not affecting the ORIGINAL photo, and it must be that original photo that iMovie recognises and imports.
So long as they are of good quality, you should be able to use the Ken Burns zoom function to 'crop' them even after they are already in your project.
To batch alter the duration of your stills, firstly select them, then make the adjustment in the Photos Pane and click 'Update'. Note, though, that transitions must be re-rendered (a note to that effect will appear on the screen).

  • Can't get dvd to import into imovie?  Any suggestions?

I have my sister's wedding that a friend took for me on his camcorder, and burned to a dvd for me. But when I put the dvd in I am unable to save or anything and when I go to imovie and try to import it the best I get is files unrecognizable, but I'm not even sure I'm picking the right files. . .video is in NTSC. Any suggestions? Thanks!

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing... so, any conversion process will add a (dramatic) loss in picture quality.
for usage in iLife, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
Drop2DV (free, requires installation of ffmpeg parts, google for it...)
Toast 6/7/8/9 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
    old apps:
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
