Clip Management - Difficult To Manage Multiple Clips of Multiple "Takes"

I just switched from iMovie and am editing multiple "takes" from a shoot I did for a commercial. I am finding it very difficult to keep track of which shots I like best. I am using detailed naming, but that is not the issue. When I drop a clip from the Project section into the Timeline I am finding it very tedious to determine which clips in the Project section have already been dropped into the Timeline. Did I use it already; didn't I? Other than Labels, or the checkbox for the Good collumn, is there a less tedious way for me to clearly see what is already used from the Project section? Is there a way to have them disappear from the Project section once I drop them into the Timeline? I guess I could drag everything into the Timeline and then just do all the edits by deleting what I don't want, but that seems to defeat the purpose of the Source section.
Thanks,
Eric

> Did I use it already; didn't I
There are a number of ways. Right click on a clip and say "Reveal in project" it will show you where the clip is in a bin.
More importantly each clip in a bin shows you on the top left if it is in use. Video clips will display a film strip and audio files display a little speaker.
Very easy.
Or you could click on "remove unused clips".

  • How can I Manage Multiple Users?

My wife and I both want to organize and edit our digital photos with PSE10.  Up until now, I have managed all of our photos by myself, and I have synchronized all data on both of our computers (and backed up all of our data to an external harddrive).  Now that my wife also wants to organize and edit our photos on her computer, I am finding it difficult to synchronize the PSE Catalogs and photos on our two computers.  So, I am looking for a better procedure.
Should I (and can I) keep my PSE Catalog & Photos on:
    (1) an External Harddrive (which would be connected to only one computer at a time, while that computer user is organizing and editing photos), or
    (2) on a Home Network location where both users could access the photos for organizing and editing (with a "lockout" for photos which are being edited by the other computer user)?
Are there other good or better procedures for managing multiple users of PSE?
My computer is running Win7 Home Premium 64-bit.
My wife's computer is running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

Thank all of you for your replies.
    Re SOFTWARE CHOICES:
I decided that my wife and I will each use different software on our different computers.
I decided NOT to upgrade my wife's software from "Windows Live Photo Gallery" (WLPG) to "Adobe Photoshop Elements 10" (PSE).  After a detailed discussion of my wife's wishes, I discovered that she only wants to (1) move our pictures into folders, (2) cull the pix, and (3) create "Album" folders (with only our most memorable pix) to be printed as 8.5" x 11" pages for the Albums.  She wants me to crop, edit, add captions, and print the Album pages.  See the image at the bottom for our current Photo Mgmt Plan.
I will continue to use "Lightroom" (Lr).
    Re SYCHRONIZATION:
I decided that we both can use the same picture files.  I use "GoodSync" to sychronize files between my computer and my wife's computer (and between my computer and my backup HDD).
My wife's "WLPG" does NOT appear to use a database.  My changes (including "Keyword" edits or adds) show up in her "WLPG" program, when picture files have been changed by myself in "Lr" and sychronized with her computer.
After my wife adds folders and/or changes the folder contents, I sync her computer with mine.  I open her folders (which are now also on my computer) in "Lr", and "Import" any of her new and duplicate pictures into "Lr".  Surpisingly and thankfully, the pictures that have been moved to a new folder by my wife do NOT show up in "Lr" in the previous folder (i.e. I do NOT have to find and delete any "Missing" images which were in the previous folder location).
Re MULTIPLE USERS OF A DATABASE:
I do not need to use this now, but I read that "Lr" is designed to work with the "Lr" database (and pictures) on an external HDD.
Thank all of you again for your very helpful replies.

  • Managing multiple PL's

    Good day Mentors,
I want to know what's the best way to manage multiple PL's in my laptop. I believe a lot of people have encountered having to do development(SDK), testing and support across multiple SBO PL's and or Versions simultaneously. The only way I could think of being able to manage multiple PL's is to make VM's for each PL and Version in my laptop.
By your experience, is there any preferred or better way to manage this aside from having multiple VM's stored in my laptop, which consumes a lot of Hard Drive space and resources?
If there is a link answering this question of mine, please post the link.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sean Yu

    Hi Sean,
If your multiple PLs are still in one version, say.. 2005 or 2007 only... installing on one machine is still possible,.
The License Server, you will only need one. - the existing installation.
you start with  one installation ex. 2005 PL 37.
Create another instance of SQL Server.  lets call it SBO2005PL40
Copy your sbocommon from your 1st instance to the new instance.
Copy the whole folder of SBO Client Application.. to a new folder, rename it  to ex. SBO2005pl40
You now end up with 2 sets of SBO PL37 on your machine.
Next... do an upgrade on sbo common in SBO2005PL40 instance.
After upgrading your sbo common, you run your SBO Client from folder SBO2005pl40. and connect it to your newly upgraded SBO Common.
The client should automatically run the process of self upgrading to match the sbo common PL's
Voila.. now you have two PLs on your machine.
While using the same technique you can get also 2004,2005 + 2007 in the same machine, it is rather difficult to maintain..
Sometimes the DI API is not installed correctly.
License server for 2004 should be installed.
While 2005 and 2007 are compatible.
Means if you are having 2004 and 2005/2007 ... you will have to have 2 license server
if you are having 2005 and 2007 .. you need only one license server.
    Regards
    Edy

  • Managing multiple itunes accounts on a single computer

I have an iPod and an iPad that use a single iTunes account on a certain PC. I have a second iPod that I have setup on a second computer which also has its own separate iTunes account (because at the time I didn't understand you can manage multiple devices from a single account/computer). This second iPod has iPod apps I have purchased from my second iTunes account. I would like to change this and manage my second iPod from my main computer (so everything lives in one place). When I hooked the second iPod up to my main computer I picked the option to "transfer purchases to this computer". It acted like it was doing it, but I noticed nothing transferred. I unplugged the device and plugged it back in, and a dialogue box told me this iPod contained 33 applications that were NOT authorized to play on this computer and would not transfer them. It said I needed to authorize the computer to do that. My PC is already authorized with my main account and I don't want to mess that up. Can I authorize my computer for my second itunes account and have it authorized for both? Am I allowed to take apps I've purchased for the ipod that is on account 1 and install any of those apps on the ipod that is associated with account 2? I've purchased all these apps, I just did not understand from the get go that there was no need for me to setup 2 completely different itunes accounts. The second iPod I am going to give to my young daughter as a toy, but I absolutely don't want to mess up my iPad and first iPod as I use them for work on a daily basis. Any help would be appreciated.

+Can I authorize my computer for my second itunes account and have it authorized for both?+
Yes. Sign out of the itunes store under the first account, then _sign back in_ with 2nd.
+I just did not understand from the get go that there was no need for me to setup 2 completely different itunes accounts.+
Don't worry, lots of people made this same mistake. It will be kind of a hassle remembering to authorize both accounts in the future, but it's manageable. You know that license agreement that comes up after an itunes update? I think you'll have to go in under both accounts and agree to it from now on.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
    See this line?
+If the iTunes Store purchases on your device were purchased with multiple accounts, you will need to authorize the computer for each one.+
    That's what I'm talking about.

  • Managing multiple iOS devices on different Apple accounts from the same iMac

May be a very simple question to answer, but can I manage multiple iOS devices on different Apple accounts from the same iMac?
I ask as whilst I'm totally Mac'd, my partner who has her own Apple account has a Winows laptop and experiences problems updating iOS software on her iPhone 4S and iPad 3 Gen via the laptop. I'm thinking the problems may be overcome if we manage her iOS devices through my iMac.

Thanks dwb .... I thought there'd be a catch .... not to keen on all that media and apps on my iMac!
The specific problem is that whenever she updates to the latsest version of iOS using the latest iTunes for Windows on her PC laptop she seems to lose something in the process. One time she lost all her texts and the other day when updating to 5.1.1 she lost all her reminders. Not the end of the world but frustrating and shouldn't really happen and doesn't happen to me using the iMac and OSX.

  • How to manage multiple sizes of the same image?

I recently took up LightRoom for all the good things it does. One of the things I need to do, however, is to create and manage multiple sizes of the same image needed for different purposes. I always found this cumbersome. I totally expected that the LR library would offer a solution for this but I looked and I didn't see anything. Sure you can export and resize in the process but then you're on your own. Am I missing something? Isn't there a better way? What does Adobe have in mind for best practices and how do you handle this?

I can't speak for 99jon, but when I need multiple sizes, I export at the desired sizes, and then make use of the exported photos (upload, e-mail, whatever) and then delete the exports. Thus, there's really no need for me to keep track of the photo at this specific size, knowing that if I ever need it again -- unlikely -- I can regenerate it with the export pre-set, so I put no effort (zero!) into keeping track of photos at different sizes.
The idea of adding it back into the catalog doesn't get me excited, and I would advise against it. I don't need this, and I don't see the benefit of keeping this particular size export for the long-term. As I said, I can always recreate it — but maybe you have such a need to keep these exports long-term and recreating it at a later point in time doesn't meet your needs? Can you explain?
By the way, you can't resize a virtual copy, so that won't work here. The only time you can resize is on export.

  • Managing multiple devices in a family - iCloud better using Mac or PC?

Anyone using a Mac to manage multiple i devices? We're sharing an iTunes account in the family and are finding limitations using iCloud on our PC. Specifically, can you manage iCloud on each device from a Mac?

The only practicable way to do this is for each person who has an iCloud account to have their own user account on the Mac, They can then sign into iCloud and keep their data separate from everyong else.
It is possible to have a single user account and sign into one iCloud account in System Preferences>iCloud and then sign into subsequent ones in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts and Calendars, but if you do this with a number of accounts it will get messy, and everyone will see everyone else's data and emails.
If you enable 'Fast use switching' you can have several user accounts running at once and simply switch between them (though of course this all takes processing power and RAM). Probably better for everyone to sign in and sign out to their user account when they want to use the Mac - that feels like everyone having their own computer.

  • Managing multiple libraries with different file types (AAC v. Lossless)

I have set up two libraries, one for my AAC music and the other for my lossless music. The files themselves are located in two separate places on my hard drive. When I switch libraries (option-clicking iTunes), and go to Preferences/Advanced tab, the directory for the files and the import method doesn't change -- I have to change it manually. This is annoying.
Does anyone know of a way to automate this change, so that if I open a new library, the default location of the files and the import format changes automatically? I tried ituneslibrarymanager from Dougscripts, but for some reason can't get this program to install on my machine.

No, it's the same Windows XP user account, but I have two separate music libraries - the music files in library are in a lossless format, while those in the other are in AAC. For convenience, I wish to keep the two libraries separate.
In iTunes 7 it is possible to have separate libraries - start iTunes and hold down the SHIFT key (Windows) while the program starts. A dialogue box then appears where the required library can be selected. However, as far as I can tell, it's not possible to have a different set of preferences for each library.
Say the preferences are set up for my lossless library, which is located on a separate network drive. If I then make the AAC library active and open iTunes, iTunes reindexes the library according to the settings for the lossless library and I end up with the AAC library full of lossless files. I've tried unchecking various things in the preferences box, but I've had no luck fixing the problem. Thanks for your suggestion - I have already reported the problem.
The whole thing is a rather inelegant way of managing multiple libraries in iTunes. Surely the Apple developers can come up with a way of doing it from within iTunes??

  • Managing multiple libraries

    Hello everyone,
is there a way (even through a third-party add-on) to manage multiple libraries (I actually need to have only 2 libraries) in iTunes?
I'm asking so because I need to move part of my podcast collection to an external drive (I want to keep only the most "important" podcasts in my Mac and the rest of them in a external drive). But I'd like to make this change transparent to iTunes (I don't want to choose the library I want to mount every time I use iTunes).
Thanks and have a nice weekend.
    Sig

I'm asking so because I need to move part of my podcast collection to an external drive (I want to keep only the most "important" podcasts in my Mac and the rest of them in a external drive).
You don't need a separate library to do this.
    iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
Set the *iTunes media folder location* to the external.
In iTunes, select the items you want on the external then right click -> Consolidate selected files.
This will copy these to the external drive.
You can then delete them from the internal.
Then set iTunes prefs -> Advanced, *iTunes media folder location* back to the internal.
I'm looking for something integrated within iTunes
Then no, you cannot manage separate libraries except holding Option when starting and selecting the library you want.
