Clip management

My system is PC, Athlon 64x2 4600, 4GB RAM. Graphics is on motherboard at this point.
1) When I capture video, it appears in the sceneline, but even after I make clips, I cannot move them to the organizer.
2) When I attempt to import footage from another project via the get media feature,...necesary components may not have been installed. I get an error message "file format not supported."
3) I also cannot clear the organizer.
4) When I try to save a project with save as, it doesn't always change the name.
Any help appreciated.
Jim

You're asking several questions with several unrelated questions, Jim. But it's hard to answer them without knowing more about how you're doing and how you're doing it. I'm not even sure which version of the software you're using or which operating system or even what kind of camcorder you're getting your footage from.
Your second question asks about getting media from another project using Get Media. What is this media? Is it video? What format is the video and how did you capture it into your computer?
Your other questions might be easier to answer if you explained what exactly you're doing and what's not working. For instance, when you say you can't clear the Organizer, what is it you're doing and what's not happening? Are you trying to remove the Organizer, go to a different panel or are you trying to get rid of something that appears in the Organizer even after you've deleted it from your computer's hard drive?

  • Is anyone using JVC ProHD clip manager with premier pro?

i recently purchased a JVC GY-HM150U camcorder (my 1st experience with JVC) and am trying to figure out how to use their ProHd clip manager software to get recorded clips imported into premier. i can do it one clip at a time, but it is pretty darn cumbersome; there must be a better way?

I disagree. Any advantage AVCHD has in visual quality over bitrate quotient is not worth the computing overhead for RT editing. I've not used Panasonic AVCCAM cameras in particular, but general implementation of AVCHD is not very flexible with resolutions and framerates, like shooting 720p 60. And the cameras that do offer more settings options go outside of the AVCHD standard into propreitary implementations that have spotty support.
    * edit  -  It looks like I was wrong about 720 60p being non-standard for AVCHD. I guess it is just non-standard on the several Cannon Vixia models I have used, including my own. One of the Vixias we have at work uses h.264 in an .mp4 wrapper for 720 at either 4 or 9 mbps.
My main gripe with AVCHD is its RT performance as a native source in Premiere. I edit multiple AVCHD and Cannon XF projects each week. Using Premiere CS5.03 on a six core i7 980 with a GTX 480, Projects using AVCHD take about 3x long to export than comparable projects that are using Cannon's XF codec (similar to XDcam 25-50mbps). Also, on several systems properly configured systems, ie. -core i5 2500k, i7 2600k, i7 980, CS5x & CS6x, 12gb to 32GB memory, GTX cards, CS5x & CS6x,.... on each system the XF codec projects invariable run smoother than AVCHD projects. The AVCHD project's timelines are more prone to random choppiness and bugginess. With AVCHD, even if the sequence matches the source footage properly, there is still a yellow line above footage on the timeline, meaning playback will play by rendering each frame for preview in mpeg I-frame just before the CTI reaches it. The HD mpeg2 employed with Sony XDcam, Cannon XF, and JVC's XDcam  EX variant will not have a yellow line above the footage on the timeline and will not need to render preview frames for display.
The advantage of the simple HD codec becomes more apparent as the projects become more complex, like when adding video fx or multiple video streams.  When editing in Premiere's multicam panel gui, the AVCHD footage looks awful compared to Cannon XF. Also, you need a much more power system to do multi-camera editing with AVCHD.
There is not a debate on whether AVCHD has better quality/bitrate. If one were using higher bitrate intermediate footage like a FCP or Avid workflow, then AVCHD would be a better aquisition choice. However when editing native footage in Premiere, while AVCHD works, HD mpeg footage offers a faster, smoother and more stable editing experience. This comes into play even more when your computer hasn't really enough muscle for AVCHD.

  • I need a Clip Manager

I would need a Clip Managers, free or not free.
    Any suggestion ?

Those keys  MUST NOT be posted here.
Install a solution manager, you will need it because you won´t get any patches without it.

  • Clip Management - Difficult To Manage Multiple Clips of Multiple "Takes"

I just switched from iMovie and am editing multiple "takes" from a shoot I did for a commercial. I am finding it very difficult to keep track of which shots I like best. I am using detailed naming, but that is not the issue. When I drop a clip from the Project section into the Timeline I am finding it very tedious to determine which clips in the Project section have already been dropped into the Timeline. Did I use it already; didn't I? Other than Labels, or the checkbox for the Good collumn, is there a less tedious way for me to clearly see what is already used from the Project section? Is there a way to have them disappear from the Project section once I drop them into the Timeline? I guess I could drag everything into the Timeline and then just do all the edits by deleting what I don't want, but that seems to defeat the purpose of the Source section.
    Thanks,
    Eric

    > Did I use it already; didn't I
There are a number of ways. Right click on a clip and say "Reveal in project" it will show you where the clip is in a bin.
More importantly each clip in a bin shows you on the top left if it is in use. Video clips will display a film strip and audio files display a little speaker.
    Very easy.
Or you could click on "remove unused clips".

  • Workflow for avchd clips and meta data

Just started using a Panasonic AG-AF100 on a 5 month project.  Will be producing 1000's of clips.  So I have off-loaded the first 3 cards we shot and have discovered something about avccam material.  If you just copy the .MTS files from their /stream folder or rename the file with a name instead of its original number produced in the camera you lose the timecode and other meta data.
If I leave the clips in that folder and other card folders in their associated directories and "import" clip with Premiere Media Browser it retains the timecode.  Trouble is that I cannot see thumbnails in Media Browser and the clip number means little.  Bridge on my Win7/64bit machine shows thumbnails (but no preview) and a double-click will preview in Win Media Player.
On my main edit station (Vista/64bit) Bridge neither shows thumbnails or previews and I get no avchd .mts playback in Windows Media Player.  Everything worrks the same within Premiere, nice solid editing and playback of avchd clips. (I will probably upgrade this machine to Win7 next week)
So my request for advice/questions are:
Suggestions for managing and organizing large qualities of clips with what will be similar names, etc
Previewing updates or options to find media
How do you manage AVCHD material and still maintain meta data?
Thanks so much!!  As I get older and the technology seems faster, stronger, sharper, the demands on my brain get tougher.
    Rick

    Rick,
If you just copy the .MTS files from their /stream folder or rename the file with a name instead of its original number produced in the camera you lose the timecode and other meta data.
If I leave the clips in that folder and other card folders in their associated directories and "import" clip with Premiere Media Browser it retains the timecode.
You mustmustmust keep the files in their folder structure, if you intend to maintain timecode. You've clearly discovered this Good you did so early. The folder structure thing is really not a big deal; there is very little need to manipulate these at the OS level, and the Media Browser in PPro makes it reasonably easy to bring these in for editing. You can pre-build a folder structure into which you can offload each card's worth of clips.
Windows 7 has built-in splitters and decoders for H.264 media, so that's the reason you can at least get thumbnails in Bridge and playback the files in WMP there. The Media Browser, even on Windows 7, won't show thumbnails as they are not saved into the folder structure the way that P2 saves a poster image into the folder structure. Note that even "standard" containers like AVI or MOV do not display a thumbnail in Media Browser.
As far as Bridge is concerned: I know a lot of people like it, but from my perspective, it's just about worthless for video. This is largely an application designed for photography workflows that has been shoehorned into "working" with video. I don't even like it for AVI/MOV.
The ugly truth is that Bridge is not going to be much, if any, help in this workflow. However, there may be another tool in the suite that will accomplish what you need: OnLocation. You won't get thumbnails, but you can browse through the folder structure without knowing you're doing it, import clips to preview them, and add metadata. You could do this for each card you offload. Then, in Premiere, simply use Media Browser to navigate to your OnLocation Project, and it will open up just like a folder, listing all your clips with the metadata you added. Granted, it is not a perfect workflow, but once you added that metadata, it will flow with the files wherever you move them around in the Adobe suite--it won't go elsewhere, as it's not injected into the files themselves. So long as you're editing in Premiere, you're good.
Now, there is another thing you can do that may make clip management even easier, though it does require a bit of forethought in pre-production. It will really depend on the type of project you're shooting, but you can preload metadata on to an SD card and into the camera, and then automatically record this to the clips as they are shot! I don't have an AVCCAM to give you exact workflow steps, but I do this all the time with my P2 workflow and it's a tremendous help once you hit the edit bay.
If you haven't already, head over to the Panasonic support site: Support Desk Top / Broadcast and Professional AV. You'll need to register for a "PASS" membership (it's free, and you don't need to register a camera), but you can then download the AVCCAM Viewer application. Unfortunately, this application is not quite as helpful as P2 Viewer is (it's rather cartoony, actually), but it does have the metadata editor in it that will let you create your metadata files in advance and save them to an SD card. Then, after consulting the camera manual , you can set those metadata files to be a data source for the footage as you record it. Here's what you can add to the metadata files and, summarily, the clips:
Once you load this into the camera's memory, that data is saved into the clips, and is readable by Premiere. The "User Clip Name" field can be set to auto-increment (again, this is going off my knowledge of the way metadata works in a P2 camera, but the AVCCAM should be similar) so that each clip has a base name and then a serial number. When you're done with a particular scene/shot, you'd load the next metadata files, reset the indexing, and continue. Lather, rinse, repeat.
The biggest hole in the metadata workflow, at least as it pertains to AVCHD/AVCCAM, is that there is no tool (that I'm aware of) that lets you edit this metadata after the fact. With P2, you can--there are a number of applications, both free and payware, that let you do this--but I've yet to find one that works with AVCCAM. Even Panasonic's own AVCCAM Viewer is incapable of this, it seems.
The major advantage to adding file metadata like this is that it travels wherever the clips go, and into whatever application they land in. Not being able to edit it after the fact, though, just plain sucks. This is where the clip metadata you'd add in the Adobe applications comes into play, with the obvious disadvantage that it's only useful in Adobeland. As always, ain't no such thing as a free lunch.
So that's my take on this--it's good you're looking into this before you have a couple terabytes worth of footage on hand Let me know if I can help fill in any details that I might have overlooked. And be sure to check on the Panasonic site linked above for firmware updates to the AF100--I see one came out just a few days ago. It's always good to stay current.
    Good luck!

  • Image Preview Causes Finder to crash [LONG]

I came across a problem with image previews last night and am wondering if anyone else has had this problem.
I collect images from the web for use as desktop pictures.
Last night, when attempting to add new folders to the Desktop Pictures preference pane, I noticed that pictures did NOT show up for some of the folders I selected.
When I went into the Finder and located those pictures, I could not get a preview and the Finder subsequently crashed (console log will follow).
In looking at the offending pics in GraphicConverter 6.0, I noticed that the pictures were in JPEG 6.0 format. When I re-saved them in QuickTime format, the problem went away.
Does anyone know if this is a known problem?

  • Is it possible to do a L-Cut in iMovie for iOS?

I would like to start the audio of the second clip at the end of the first clip. Is it possible to do such a L-Cut in iMovie on my iPad?
    Thanks for answers,
    Thomas

I am looking for the same info on l-cut. it seems like the audio attached to the clip should have separate handles or at least have a way to detach it.  btw, i had a big breakthrough in clip management to share. if you use iphoto u can actually remove, archive and sync clips from the pad (sorry pc users). i guess that was overlooked in the help menu.

  • Export a project with only segments of videos

I do love FCPX and don't miss FCP7, but there is one thing I used to be able to do that I can't figure out if its possible to do in X.
Many of the video clips I use in projects are hours long, and I may only use a few secs of video from them in a project.  In FCP7 in the media manager it was possible to export a sequence using only the portion of the video used (with the option to add handles of any length too).  I would like to move a sequence from one library to a new one in FCPX 10.2 and have that option.  Is that something that is possible or is that something still on the wish list for FCPX 10.3? (Or is it just me who was using this feature in FCP7?)
    Thanks!

Re-reading this now, it sounds like you might be referring to using Media Manager in legacy FCP for  archiving.
If that''s the case, then no… FCP X doesn't have an equivalent function.
I think if I were working with the kind of material you describe, I would probably begin by creating a camera archive when the footage was being taken off the camera/recorder. That way, I could preview in the import window and make rough selects when importing to my event.
Here is a quick tutorial on archiving you may be interested in.
Also, here is a third party clip management app that may fit your workflow.

  • Export vertical oriented movie single frame - not working

    Using:
    - iMac 20" 2 GHz 4 GB RAM
    - OSX10.5.8
    - iPhoto 8 version 7.1.5 (378)
    - QuickTime Player Pro Version 7.6.9 (1680.8)
    - Preview 4.2 (469.5)
Here is what I do to export a frame from a move in iPhoto to get a single frame:
Open and play a video in iPhoto using Quicktime Pro, stoping and selecting a particular frame, pressing Command C, open Preview, select New From Clipboard.
    or
Open and play a video in iPhoto using Quicktime Pro, stoping and selecting a particular frame, Selecting File Export Move to Picture.
Both the above work for horizontal oriented movies.
However, for vertically oriented movies neigther works.
    Movies are taken with:
    - iPhone 3GS
    - Exaxti CG6
    - Insignia NS-DSC7B09
    - Fujifilm Finepix XP20.
Any solutions/suggestions (except upgrading to the newest iPhoto, Lion, etc. too slow on a 2 GHz iMac)
    Thanks.

I mentioned in the second part of my initial post that I did also try the export "Movie to Picture" with the same results.
Strange! That work flow still works on my PPC platform. (Unfortunately, I don't have an Intel platform available with OS 10.5.8 installed for testing.)
Am I able to have "MPEG Streamclip" open as the default when a movie is double clicked on in iPhoto instead of Quicktime opening the movie?
Not sure. I don't use iPhoto (prefer Aperture) normally and definitely would not use either for video clip management. Try resetting the double-click external edit switch or reset the "Open With" atribute for the class of movies being edited.
This actually for a novice user who I suggested take short video clips, pick a frame then copy/paste it into Preview instead of taking stills. Unfortunatly my advice fails when the iPhone photos are taken vertically.
The problem may be based on a change on the application being use. Like anamorphic videos with contain both pixel dimensions and PAR values, the reoriented videos may contain both true orientation and display orientation information. How the files work may depend on the application being used at the time. I.e., some third-party video/still display apps rely on the original orientation while others use the "rotated" info embedded in the file. And, unfortunately, it appears that Preview does not know what to do, so it does nothing. My guess is this is a bug that needs to be reported in feedback to Apple again and again until until they decide to address and correct the Preview application.

  • Is it possible to create pull-down menus in Numbers for iOS ?

Ideally, I would like to propose values for a text column according to a list in another table. Strolling on the different helpfiles for iwork/numbers, I more or less saw this feature on the Mac version. What about the iOS version ?

  • Is iMovie '08 Really An Upgrade?!  Take 2.

Funny thing is that I started a thread by this same title on the day IM '08 was released and that thread had grown to at least 4 pages with a variety of informative and interesting posts by IM users as to what IM '08 was and was not capable of doing compared to IM6. But suddenly my thread is gone. Hmmmm.... For those who may have missed it, the undeniable conclusion was that IM '08 was an excellent advancement in video format compatability and storage/managment but was a BIG step (or 3 or 4 big steps) backwards from IM6 in terms of video editing capabilities/features.
I hope nobody finds this renewed post too offensive and has to delete it too

Sure, it will get better. But if you are in my shoes, with a $47,000 budget for school media labs to spend before Christmas, and you are looking at new iMacs, then we have a problem.
iMovie 6 HD is excellent, but had serious clip management issues and limited import compared to the camera market (we're also buying those so there's a crossover here big time).
We're not all Mac. Only 25% and we had to fight desperately for any of that over the last few years. There is some excellent Windows software on inexpensive hardware available that we are familiar with that actually does more than iMovie for less money. So we have to ask the question about our long-term investment in iMovie as an educational application,a nd that means questining the total commitment to the Mac platform. Final Cut Express is far too complex for our age groups and for the one-term students. It also dramatically adds to the cost. It is not an option.
My Apple education sales rep is positively red-faced with embarassment over this problem. He cannot say if iMovie will fit the current curriculum ever again. If we're investing in kids education for the future, we MUST know if the product will have legs. From what I have seen, Apple is taking away features in iMovie 7 that are an absolute necessity and that rips the rug right out from us. Right now we may not be in a position to buy Apple hardware because we do not see a software upgrade path. We've been given a downgrade path.

  • Using Referenced Events:  Good Idea?

As a legacy FCE user, I developed a clip management scheme which works for me.
In converting to FCP X I see that it is common to import clips to FCP X by copying them to the FCP X events files.
However, by unchecking the Copy Files box on the import dialog, it appears to create a referenced event in FCP X, leaving the actual clip in its original location.
My question is: Is there any real problem with using the referenced event concept for my FCP X projects?
Seems like a good idea to me.
    Any comments would be appreciated.

    You're welcome, Rex
My workflow with FCE was to create a project dedicated to converting AVCHD footage to Quicktime Intermediate files. After conversion, I would cut all the clips from the browser that I just converted, save the Project, and it was ready to go for next time. I would then move the converted clips out of the Scratch folder to any folder I wanted.
I suppose the same thing could be done with FCPX, but I really like the functionality and ease of the new application’s Event Library (once it recognizes the correct drive, which another issue altogether), and am revising my thinking (a work in progress, heh) about organization.

  • Collaborative offline editing

We've been using FCP for a long time, having multiple editors working offline on the same project collaboratively, bringing the various parts and pieces together in to one master project at the end.    An example would be one editor working on the first 1/3 of a project, another on the middle 1/3 and another on the last 1/3.
Historically we've created a base project with all the source material added to it, then distributed this entire project (complete with source material) to the offline editors over the network or via HDDs.  In every case, each editor has their own copy of the source material, but maintains the same file/folder structure so that projects can be easily merged again later.
When the 'majority' of the editing has been done we bring all the sequences back in to a single project (within FCP) and tie them all together, i.e. we leave the links as very rough cuts and do the final cutting of the links in the final master project.
So, assuming we are going to dump FCP and go all Premiere Pro CS5, what would be the best workflow to achieve this type of offline collaborative work?
What is the best way to bring it all back together again?   Is project import with sequence selection the best way, or did I miss something better?

I think the workflow you're already using and accustomed to with FCP will work perfectly well with PPro. I use pretty much the same workflow, and have no real problems doing so.
So long as you maintain the same folder structure and file placement, relinking the files will be a breeze, especially if all of the media was originally imported or captured into the original project. Just import each of the "child" projects into the new master project (or the original parent project); if each child has its own sequences, you can import the whole thing, or you can cherrypick the sequences you need. Fortunately, as of CS5, Premiere no longer imports duplicates of media if it already exists in a project when you import another project. This will make clip management much easier.
The only possible issue would be if you were working on two different platforms--Windows and Mac. Obviously, with FCP, this isn't an issue as you don't have a choice of platform, but with PPro, you do. You didn't mention the platform(s) you'll be using, but that's a consideration. The biggest issue there is that the two platforms store file paths differently, so automatic relinking because a little less automatic. Just something to keep in mind...

  • Managing Family Clips on a Mac - Help - New Mac User

I am new to the Mac and am looking for the most efficient way to manage my media. I have 300+ files that are in the later stages of being converted to Mp4. All of the files will reside in /Movies/imported.
    What should I do next?
Should I import everything into iMovie using the "move" option?
Should I import into Itunes and only import Movies I want to edit or post online. I am assuming this option will give me duplicates.
I think iPhoto can manage movies thoughts ?
My goal is to have only one local copy of the files (30+ gig), have access through iTunes, and finally iMovie access to edit and post online without importing and duplicating data.
Does any of this make sense ? I think I am OCD...
What would you do with 30gig of family clips?
    null

    Hello Richard,
I would place all the MPEG4 clips into iPhoto, where you could sort them to subject, year, etc. Then you could make a copy by dragging a clip to your desktop, leaving your original in iPhoto. Work with that copy in iMovie.

Multiple motion edits and opacity edits were made. When project manager moved the project, the actual video content of 0002.MTS to 0005.MTS was missing(source clips are still there but they were playing and working as part of that 0001.MTS timeline clip before). HELP!! any ideas?
I did not nest any clips or sequences, premiere just seemed to combine the clips under one name when I moved them to timeline.
