  • Clipping Mask for placement into InDesign document

    I have a drawing in Illustrator CS3.
I need to "place" certain sections of this drawing into an InDesign CS3 document using the File--->Place command.  These sections will need a 1 pt black border when they get "placed" into InDesign.
Pretty sure Clipping Masks are the answer but I've never used them.  Can someone tell me how to do this?  Do I need to create new files from the Clipping Masks to pull this off?

multiple Clipping Masks on the same drawing
This would entail making a compound clipping mask with many "windows". You will need to give the mask a stroke afterwards
Just save your Illie file with pdf compatability an place it into InDesign in the usual way (Cmd+D).
    Like this:
Left to right: Artwork, rectangles (compounded together), select both, Cmd+7 and add stroke

  • Is it possible to make clipping masks only selectable within their objects?

I sometimes work with files which have multiple objects which contain enormous clipping masks. This means whenever I go to drag-select multiple objects on a board it will always select multiple clipping masks, and essentially render this mode of selection useless.
Is there any way to ensure that clipping masks are only ever selected within the bounds of their containing object?
    Thanks,
    Felix

    Sure.
So I'll have a page full of pushpoints, with clipping masks applied to each to provide a photographic backdrop:
But then if I try and select the adjacent pushpoint elements, it will also select the clipping masks, despite the fact that it doesn't actually touch its containing object.
This has lead to quite a bit of inconvenience in many circumstances. Any idea, apart from locking the layers? I need the clipping masks to also be selected when their container layer is selected, but not the rest.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Clipping Masks for Groups in PS6

    Hi,
I followed a tutorial for creating a clipping mask for a group. I made a group of several layers, place another layer on top of this group and, holding the 'alt' key clicked between them. The thumbnail of the top image showed it had now been clipped but no clipping had actually happened. I've tried this a couple of times with different images in the layers but to no avail. I'm using Creative Cloud's latest version of Photoshop.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Peter

  • Selecting objects AFTER they have a clipping mask applied.

    Hi There,
What really disturbs me about Illustrator is that after I apply a clipping mask to a set of objects, the program assumes that I would want to actually select that object if the cursor hovers above that masked object if it is outside the boundary of the clipping mask. It's like selecting the "invisible". Is there an option that will allow me to turn that function off?
The logic should be something like:
if object has a clipping mask and
cursor hovers above clipped object OUTSIDE of the clipping mask boundary
    then
do not highlight or allow user to select the clipped object
Likewise, this logic should be implemented in the interface:
if object has a clipping mask and
cursor hovers above clipped object INSIDE of the clipping mask boundary
    then
highlight the clipped object and allow them to select it.
Anybody know any work arounds? Did they address this in CS4? It's really annoying to have to lock and unlock objects all the time.
    Thanks,
    Laz

It's not a problem. In PostScript thinking it's
quite normal that a couple of graphic objects
defines one or more paths, and that a clipping path
is applied to the whole underlying path system.
If those paths or path fragments which are outside
the clipping path could not be selected, then it
would be rather difficult to handle paths which are
simultaneously inside and outside the clipping area.
Therefore it's necessary to have access to the whole
underlying graphic - not only to the path fragments
which are entirely inside the clipping area.

  • How to place grouped items into another object with content collector tool?

Is it possible to paste a group into another object (i.e. frame) by using the Content Collector Tool while linking the content?  Paste Into is either deselected or possibly whatever was last saved to the clipboard ends up inserting. I was able to place grouped, linked content into a frame (and later applied a scrollable frame overlay to it) once or twice but can't seem to repeat. Tried selecting the object being pasted into.. holding shift, holding ctrl, all kinds of options, just very confused now.

    Found a potential work-around (I think....).
    1. Use the Content Collector tool and select grouped objects
    2. Select Content Placer tool, check "Create Link"
    3. Place grouped object into doc/onto page with Content Placer tool
    4. Copy placed grouped objects
    5. Paste into frame that will be scrollable later
For now it seems like the link still works

  • Does a Clipping Mask effect just one layer?

Hello everyone ...                                                                                      Level: Newbie   OS: Win7 64bit   Ia: Cs6
Once I use a Clipping Mask on a layer is the entire document covered in a mask?
And/or is all the artwork from then on inside the mask?
I've read about how to add and how to remove art from a mask. I've read about how to make and release and lots of other things.
So, then I went and found a lesson that contained the use of a Clipping Mask.
    But I'm stuck... again.
I am suppose to Select the main shape and "just" copy it and move it down (doesn't say rather to Paste in front or back but I assumed in back ~ not that it has mattered thus far)
However, while making the main shape I used Gradient Mesh and used an Offset to create a "replica" and so when I go to Select the main shape the mesh is selected and so when I Paste (in back ~ seems most logical) and then move it down the details such as the colors of the Gradient and other such things are visible in front ~ ??
So, I have been trying to abate my problem in lots of different ways.
I have tried using the Pen tool to draw behind the main shape, I've tried making a New Layer and placing it above and below and inbetween the main shape layer, I've tried adding the artwork to the Mask ... I've tried everything I can think of and I've been through many an article in the manual and FAQ's to no avail.
I suppose, what I think I need to know ... is, how ... how on earth do I draw behind this main shape? Am I not able to do it becuase I am not getting behind the Mask?
(Let me apologise to those that HATE it when Newbies follow lessons/tuts and who HATE it when we come here to ask for help. I'm doing my best to learn and to find answers on my own before heading here for help)
Please lmk if you would be better able to help me with pictures of my layers and the art. Thanx so much for your time!!

Thanks as well for your patience with me! It can be difficult to communicate this way, but all we can do is try our best.
As for the issue regarding the author's "main shape"...
Here I have an object with a gradient mesh:
If you follow the directions in step 3 of the tutorial, the author creates a duplicate by going to Object > Path > Offset Path.
And then inputs "0" for the offset value.
I shifted my original gradient-meshed object down a little bit, and there you can see is the simple shape that you were seeing in the author's image. Then they just filled it with that gold gradient and scaled it down.
    And as for clipping masks...
As I mentioned before, a clipping mask will only affect the objects and groups you had selected when you created it. For exhaustive information about clipping masks, see this link: http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/clipping-masks.html
I hope this was helpful! Good luck!

  • URGH! Make clipping mask/path out of a placed image?!

I'm having major issues. I'm a n00b at Illustrator, though.
I need to make a placed photo into a clipping path, and I can't figure out how to do it correctly.
It's homework for a college course in Digital Illustration. I need to recreate a photo using only shapes in Illustrator, and to do so, we're supposed to make the photo into a clipping path so that when we draw the shapes on it, the shapes won't leave the bounding box of the photo and onto the white space of the document.
I know to make the clipping mask, you just go to object > clipping mask > make... but every time I do it, and I draw on the image, the shapes still leave the image, so I must not be doing it correctly.
ANY help would be great. I'm about ready to rip my hair out.
    Thank you!

    Hola Carlos,
Thank you so much for you help!!
    your first suggestion worked wonderfully!!
however, i have one more question ... for Carlos or anyone else
i am suppose to delete the original circle but not matter what i do ... select it and hit the delete key, select the layer it's on and hit the trash can icon or even cutting it ... the Edit menu says the actions have taken place but when i hover over the area afterward the path is or seems to still be present.
i have tried and tried to look for an answer in the manual, FAQ's and have even Googled for an answer but i cannot find any info at all about how to delete a path ~ most of all under this particular circumstance. arg!
i've looked at the rest of the tut and i think if i can get past this point i'll be great.
i am wondering if it even matters rather i delete this original path.
any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks again for your time
ps. i was just thinking ... can this original path/circle even really be deleted? isn't it necessary to keep the shape of the object and/or a part of the mask that gives the object its appearance?

  • Illustrator CS Clipping mask

When I attempt to create a clipping mask using grouped objects (any objects - outlines created from text mostly)it does not work. Creating a mask from 1 object does work! I have looked at 'Help' and seem to be following instructions correctly. What is going on, can anyone assist?
    Steven

First, create a compound path out of the outlined text, then use the compound as a clipping path.

  • Problem subclassing an object group from an object library

    Hi
I've created an object group using Forms 6i (can't tell you the exact version just now) containing a number of objects, including a couple of alerts, a couple of data blocks, canvas, window, program units etc. I've saved the object group into an object library and used it successfully for some time. Now I've gone to a new job, I suspect that I'm using a subtly different version of Forms 6i (6.0.8.16.1), but I'm finding a strange behaviour when I try to add the object group to a form.
Dragging the object group over, I get the 'Do you want to copy or subclass the object?' message. If I select 'Copy', everything gets copied across fine - the datablocks have all the items in them and the program units are fine. However, if I select 'Subclass', the items all appear in the object navigator, but are 'empty', so the data blocks contain no items and the program units are just 'begin' and 'end' statements with nothing in between.
Funnily enough, if I 'copy' the object group into a form (so everything's present), then create another copy of the object group in the current version of Form Builder and save it in a (new) object library, the behaviour is still the same.
Has anyone come across this situation before (I couldn't find anything exactly comparable on Metalink), and what workaround (if any) did you find?
    regards
    Andrew
    UK

    Hi again
The answer to this strange behaviour became apparent when I found bug 2772326 on Metalink.
Basically, either the OLB has to be on the FORMS60_PATH, or the option in Forms Builder under Tools->Preferences->Access->Subclassing Path has to be set to 'Keep' rather than 'Remove'. Doing either of these things solves the problem.

  • I believe creating a clipping mask is the answer, but im doing something wrong

This is a hard one to describe so i attached this link: file:///C:/Users/Marcus/Documents/Wacom%20work/zang-deli.jpg.
Im trying to make the object (the black bit) consist of the image in the background so instead of being black it will be multicoloured?
    Thanks in advance

    Marcus,
ive now placed a new image to be clipped and when i drag my object onto it it hides beneath it?
It is crucial that the path/vector object to become the Clipping Path (the black bit in the OP I presume) is on top of the other object, as you can (also) see in the Layers palette.
it doesnt hide beneath it anymore because now im importing the object from another document but it plainly gives me the instruction "cannot clip mask"
Exactly what does the object consist of?

  • Rasterizing contents of a clipping mask

Is it possible to rasterize the contents of a clipping mask so that after applying the clipping mask, you can move the object and its contents around as if it were simply filled with a pattern?
For example, say I have a satellite photo and I make a clipping mask to crop around where my house is. Is it possible to take that small cropped image of my house (maybe with a circular clipping mask) and put it on its own layer?
    Thanks!

    Landdogger,
    A photo is raster.
    If you:
    1. Create a mask in the form of a circle,
    2. Select both and Object>Clipping Mask>Make,
    3. Change Transparency from Normal to something else,
    4. Object>Flatten Transparency,
you wil get what appears to be a circular image without the parts that are masked out, except for transparent parts to fill the corresponding square; and you can move it as desired.

  • CS3: Make mask using group with strokes, fills, multiple objects, etc

I am currently using CS3, and I have created 2 objects with gradient clipping masks on them, to go over a group (my logo). I am hoping to create a glass effect with these gradients over my logo.
The problem I am running into is that I cannot use my logo as a group to mask the gradient objects. I have attempted joining, combining, etc my logo group and making it a mask, but there are strokes inside that then mask as the fill shape.
Is there a way to mask, not unlike the clipping mask tool that is so easily used in Photoshop CS3?

    Is this any help?
To clarify this is what I want to achieve:
So that all the grey area is transparent.

  • Clipping mask, object too complex, can't use bitmap either

    Hi all,
I'm in Illustrator CS4 trying to make a page that has content that I want to embed within a rounded rectangle.  Sounds easy enough.
I've been successful sticking some content into a rounded rectangle, until now.  Now I have a page that apparently is "too complex".  It has lots of transparencies and gradients and such.  Once I try to do the clipping mask thing I am told it's very complex and may not print or work right.  I go ahead anyway and it just looks blank/invisible.
Then I thought artboards might be a way to do this, but I couldn't see how you could make an artboard that is a shape other than a rectangle (I'd like a rounded rectangle).
So then I thought if export the image to a bitmap and then repaste it in, maybe I could embed the bitmap into the rounded rectangle.  Pain in the butt, but I'm looking for any solution.  But that doesn't even work because it says the top selected object must be "a path, a compound shape, a text object, or a group of those".  So a bitmap can't be used
Has anyone had more luck with this?  In CorelDraw I've always just placed objects, no matter how complex, into a "container" without any issues.  Certainly there's a way to do the same here.  This drawing isn't *that* complex.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Check your flattener settings in the prefs, specific flattening options of your object groups and also the raster effects resolution for your document. Reduccing their dpi should make working possible.

  • [CS4] Clipping Mask issue (bug?) - Beachball when I try to select masked group

I have a somewhat complex compound path (1400 points) that I've duplicated several times and clipped. I want to make a second copy of this clipped set of objects. When I try to select the group that contains the clipping mask (with the selection tool or in the layers palette) illustrator chugs for over a minute. Once it's done chugging and I have my group selected I hit copy and paste. It chugs for another minute and then does nothing but deselect my group.
I saved the file down into CS3 format and opened it in CS3. I have no trouble with copy, paste, select, scale, or anything when I'm in CS3 - no slowdown at all. I saved the file in CS3 and opened the CS3 format file in CS4 and I still have the beachball/chug problem.
I'd like to note that the trouble begins only when I apply the clipping mask. I can select all those objects and copy/paste/rotate/scale/whatever until I apply a mask and then I can't do anything to them. The clipping mask itself is rather simple - only 26 points.
I'm on a G5 with 8gigs of RAM and over 30gigs of available space in my scratch disc. Any advice or any other users who've had this problem?

No that is not true and you know CS 3 does not come close to CS4 in performance and if I were you I would download the trial, although I have feeling you do not have the resources to to actually run the program and that has you quite miffed,
Perhaps the next release will finally release you, so long!
Tracy I found that there s a setting that is on by default in CS 4 that would make things go a bit slow and always has if selected by the user.
Clearly a mistake I would think but for some reason the default settings for the raster effects is 300 ppi as opposed to 72 ppi which really many times will eat up the memory no matter how much you have, and Illustrator can only use a limited amount of RAM something like 2GB, so that the amount of RAM is not the issue and the scratch could be as wide open as possible but it still will choke.
It may not have the resource to as in your case make a review. So I would try setting the document raster image effects setting to 72 ppi and then when outputting it change it to 300ppi or tell the printer to do so.
Hans I am sure you will now be relieved to find out that CS4 is behaving as it should with the right setting.
Enjoy the trial it is free. You are going to love CS 4.
I am mistaken Tracy and Hans CS 3 also has the default setting at 300 ppi I should have checked first.
Yes Hans this might be an issue that is a strike against CS4 on large complex projects
I am certain it was good idea to change the clipping path behavior. The question is how big or complex does the file have to be before this happens.
Hans you should still try the trial and see for yourself. Of course if you don't have the resources it might be difficult to load the trial.
I would still try changing the setting to 722 ppi and changing it for output after the work has been completed.
Yes I think you found and important bug.
