Clip Notes aspect ratio wrong

I have AE CS3 on an Intel 8. Would like to use Clip Notes for low-rez approvals, but when I render a Quicktime movie in 3 x 4 aspect ratio (like most video) when I open the pdf in Acrobat Reader 8.1.2, it stretches it to 16 x 9. Checked all the preferences and view options and can't find anything to change it. Searched through the render options in AE, and can't find anything in there either. Tried the NTSC presets, tried using Stretch, nothing makes any difference.
Also, the audio sounds very bad. I've seen demos of Clip Notes that looked great, but demos usually do.
Please help. I'd like to use this potentially great feature.

Sorry, that was a typo. Since then I've done more tests. The default size ClipNotes wants for regular video is 640 x 480. But when I render it that way in AE-CS3, and open the PDF in Acrobat 8.1.2, it gets stretched to widescreen. There seems to be no way to control this. So then I go back, nest the 640 x 480 in a comp that is 854 x 480, which is the default size ClipNotes specifies, and render it with black pillars on the sides. When I open this PDF, it looks correct and not stretched. I can live with the black pillars until they fix this.
BUT, the fatal flaw is, the audio. It sounds terrible, like the music is doing a constant phase-shifter effect. I tried it at 48 and 44 kHz, and made sure the settings matched in the output module and the ClipNotes audio settings, and it made no difference.
Thanks for your thoughts on this, but do people from Adobe ever read these posts? I have read several posts about this audio problem here and on Creative Cow. I hope they fix it or tell me what to do soon. Try it with a clip that has music, and you will immediately see what I am talking about.

Aspect Ratio wrong in sequence imported from FCP

I'm a reasonably experienced user of Final Cut who intends now to migrate to Premiere (leaving the sinking ship?) So, at present, I'm trying to import current projects from FCP into Premiere using XML.
The result for a large scale and pretty advanced project was disasterous losses, so I've decided to start with a much smaller project, which contains a single sequence in the same format as the media, 20 or so HDV 1080p25 clips, and a handful of wav sound files. The result is better, but there are two problems I've encountered:
1. When I open the sequence in the timeline the aspect ratio, which should be 16:9 is squashed in to something more like 4:3. Opening a clip from the bin in the source monitor does not have this effect, but I can't work out how to rectify the change of aspect ratio when the sequence is playing in the program monitor. - Any tips?
2. The audio file icons in the project imported into Premiere are unlinked. When I try reconnecting them, Premiere says it can't because of a 'header error'. - Any clues to what this means and why it should be?

Yes, I've tried importing one of these wav files into a new project, but it Premiere won't allow me to. It comes up with a message saying:
"The file cannot be opened because of a header error".
Any ideas?

6.0.2 reading pixel aspect ratio wrong

Hey, I'm wondering if this is a bug or just my user error. Here's the scoop. I have a ProRes HQ master that is 1920 x 1080p. When I open it in QT 7 or 10 or VLC it shows the proper aspect ratio. When I open it in Compressor it shows it is square pixels, so 1.00 as it should be. However when I create a project that matches the file in Premiere 6.0.2 and import it appears quite stretched. If I right click and get properties Premiere sees it as 1.333. If I right click and tell Premiere to create a sequence that matches the file it has the same stretched look before/after I drop it into the sequence. Any thoughts?

It happens sometimes. That's why Adobe provided a method to correct it. Right click on the clip in the bin and go to Modify>Interpret Footage... There you can set the PAR back to 1.0.

IDVD gets 4:3 aspect ratio wrong

I am using iDVD 7.1.2 with 10.9.5 on a macbook pro.
I'm trying to make a 4:3 DVD (legacy material, it's 4:3 from old VHS tapes).
I output a .mov file from Final Cut Express. The file plays correctly in Quicktime. I.e. I get the right (4:3) aspect ratio. Quicktime inspector reports the movie format as DV/DVCPRO - NTSC 720x480 ( 853 x 480).
I create a new DVD project, select 4:3 aspect ratio.
I import the movie and it is squeezed horizontally. I.e. the aspect ratio is 3:3 (maybe not precisely, but darned close). Everything is tall and skinny.
I tried changing the project to 16:9, hoping that would stretch things out, but all it did was add dark space on the sides of the video.
I've tried various different output sizes (using quicktime conversion in FCE), to no avail. I always get a 3:3 aspect ratio in iDVD.
I also burned to a disk image and played it with DVDplayer just to make sure that the preview in iDVD wasn't fooling me. It's 3:3, also.
Any ideas on what to do??????? I have a lot of old VHS to convert and would like to get a flow down pretty quick.

OK, I played around with this long enough that I think I have it.
The problem is actually the way I set up the sequence defaults in Final Cut Express (probably would work the same in FCP). I didn't realize I had the sequence set to "DV-NTSC anamorphic". It should have been set to "DV-NTSC".
The result was that I imported a 4:3 .mov file into FCE, where it seemed OK, even in that sequence. However, FCE had inserted black space on the right and left of the 4:3 video, creating a 16:9 video with a 4:3 inside of it and the black bars surrounding the video. When that was imported into iDVD, iDVD forced the whole thing to 4:3, which of course, forced the actual 4:3 video to 3:3. Changing the sequence preset too NTSC solved that problem completely.
One of the things that confused me was that two other DVD authoring programs handled this without obvious problems. Torch and Wondershare DVD converter both displayed the video at 4:3. Also, quicktime displayed it correctly. There were the black bars on the side, but the aspect ratio of the actual picture was correct.
I'm putting this here because I can imagine that some other beginner will confront this someday, and at least here is a record of the problem and the solution.

Capture preset anamorphic - output aspect ratio wrong

My capture preset was dv pal anamorphic as the footage was taken on a widescreen camera. Footage looks fine in FCP6, but when I export a QT file, the aspect ratio is wrong. Why should this be and how do I correct it?

this is because Quicktime is showing the whole file, squashed.
What is your final destination? DVD? Web? Presentation? That will depend on how you will output the file. If you are planning to play it on an SD TV, go to your timeline and make sure you change the ratio to SD with a widescreen mask.
If you want widescreen to play correctly on a standard def tv, then you need to add the mask to it. If you are planning to put it on a SD tv with widescreen, the TV's aspect ration is changed to accomodate the file. So it is playing back correctly, it is the TV that will change. This is why dvds often have two different discs, one for SD and one for wide screen.

Still image pixel aspect ratio wrong in exported video (but correct in Premiere renders)

I've saved a targa still image from my footage and added it to the bin. It's properties show as follows:
Image Size: 1440 x 1080
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333
This correctly matches my sequence settings as I'm working with 1080p widescreen footage.
The image appears as expected in the Program window both before and after rendering previews. However, once I export my sequence as a video file, the still image is squashed (displaying incorrectly):
A work around would be to stretch out the still to a width of 1920 in Premiere so that the export displays it back at its normal aspect ratio - which works - but I don't understand why I should have to do this.
The other solution I found was to go to the bin and 'Modify > Interpret Footage' and although "Use Pixel Aspect Ratio from File" already shows the correct settings, to actively reset it (to the same pixel aspect ratio) with the 'Conform to' option:
This works too.
Surely a bug?

Thanks for the quick reply. But then why does the still's properties (in my bin) show the pixel aspect ratio as 1.3333 (not square pixels, 1.0) and should it not appear incorrectly in both the preview renders and the exported video ? This seems inconsitent to me.

Aspect ratio wrong on preview monitor...

I'm using FCP with 2 monitors on a Macbook. I have it set up so that when I view my sequence it plays in full screen on my 2nd monitor. It's working fine when I view my 'canvas', but when I preview a clip in the 'viewer' window the aspect ratio on the external monitor isn't right and it squashes the clip. Any ideas?

Where might one find this magical setting? I can't find it anywhere.

Aspect ratio wrong in slideshow on HDTV

I have connected my PB to my HDTV with a DVI to HDMI cable. OS X recognizes the TV as an external display and supports it at 1920x1080@60Hz. Even recognizes it as Samsung device. Aspect ratio is correct, and everything works fine: desktop, Safari, iPhoto.
All great until I run the slideshow in iPhoto. Then resolution goes to 1600x1200@60Hz and the aspect ratio is wrong (stretched horizontally).
After returning from slideshow mode, the res goes back to 1920x1080 and aspect ratio is fine again.
Actually, the main reason I wanted to connect the PB to the TV was to view my photos in slideshow mode. So this makes me sad.
Changing the iPhoto Slideshow Format from Current Display to 4:3 or 16:9 doesn't solve the problem. Appears to make things worse actually.
Any ideas?
Hardware is PB G4 15" 1GHz with 1GB.

I would post that one on the PowerBook forum, but I suspect that you may have reached a limit of a 5 year old software that predates HD tv.

Stills aspect ratio wrong

Hi Guys
Have exported still from premiere pro 5.5.
Opened it in photoshop to deinterlace.
When imported back into premiere its went from 16:9 to 4:3
I assume its the pixel aspect ratio that photoshop has changed.
How do i get the stills to stay 16:9 when saving in photoshop?

Hi Michael,
You didn't mention what the video format was, but if HDV at 1440x1080, in Photoshop you can just change to 1920x1080 and that will look correct then using square pixels in Premiere. Or use Modify in Premiere as suggested.

16 X 9 TIMELINE VS CLIP VIEWER ASPECT RATIO

I can't seem to find out why I am able to get a full screen image when I am viewing a clip using the clip viewer and not from the timeline for 16 x 9 formats. The timeline seems to scale the image down at least to 80%. Is there something I need to adjust in the Timeline settings? If I select anamorphic the image is stretched to the edges but not the top. My clip were recorded 16 x 9 and imported as such.
Would appreciate any help.

Thanks for the quick response. I found out that something was messed up with the sequence. When starting fresh and selecting anamorphic without anything in the timeline it works just fine. Thanks anyway.

Aspect ratio wrong and different from QT in full screen mode

I created a video using anamorphic records from my camcorder in Final Cut Express HD. QT displays the final movies (MPEG 4 H.264) just fine in either partial or full screen mode. When played in Front Row, the video height is stretched. Any ideas why or how to fix?
Movies are being played on a Mini connected to a 40" LED TV with 1366x768 resolution.

It is true you can change the properties but it appears that Front Row expects all movies to have square pixels and thus displays all pixels as square. QT did/does understand the anamorphic properties and display movies correctly.
As an aside to all, the previous solution was to generate all movies at 853x480. This results in a green bar on the 853rd column (at least when generating using Final Cut Express HD). I regenerated the movies at 852x480 and the bar went away. No other noticable effects.

Aspect ratio wrong when importing from QuickTime Pro

Movies shot with Cannon still camera came out sideways. I used QuickTime Pro used to rotate them. They then look fine. However, when I import them into iMovie HD6, they remain vertical but are flattened down. I am sure it's a settings thing but this recent PC convert needs help!

So you shot in "portrait" instead of landscape?
I hope these are 320X240 instead of 640X480 files.
Easiest fix it to create an all black image file and use it as a background in QuickTime Pro.
Make the image 640X480. Import with QT Pro.
Select all and Copy.
Switch to your 320X240 movie (now 240X320), select all and "Add to Selection & Scale (Edit menu).
Open Movie Properties window.
Highlight the video track and adjust its offset and dimensions. Set its track "layer number" lower than the image file layer number. Negative numbers can be used.
Once happy with the file export to DV Stream.
Use the .dv file in iMovie.

Aspect ratio difference 1.1 vs 2.0

Now before I start this could be different TVs doing different things.
However, this could be a difference in the way AppleTV 1.1 vs 2.0 handles video.
AppleTV1 > software 1.1 > connected LG 32"LCD (1080i setting)
AppleTV2 > software 2.0 > connected Panasonic 42" plasma (1080p setting)
Both connected via HDMI.
I have a movie which is in an aspect ratio of I guess 2.35:1, certainly wider than 16:9.
If I play this file fullscreen in Quicktime Pro it is certainly much wider than the 16:10 of my iMac monitor.
On the Panasonic via AppleTV 2.0, the expected black bars top and bottom are preserved.
Same file via AppleTV 1.1 on the LG and the movie is scaled to fill the 16:9 screen i.e. stretched vertically.
I have definitely not got HDMI scaling/zooming on on the LG TV set as I can cycle through the Zoom options and get back to original which looks stretched.
I cannot believe that the TV would automatically stretch wider than 16:9 content to fit as this would play havoc with HDMI playback of such material on DVDs.
This is bizarre, and I can only assume that AppleTV1 is zooming vertically to fill the screen on this file.
Anyone with both software versions have a similar file to compare?

I've swapped the AppleTV over on the Panasonic - AppleTV 1 (1.1 - 1080i) gets the aspect ratio wrong and zooms the movie vertically, whereas AppleTV 2.0 (1080p) gets it right.
I'm sure I used to have some wider than 16:9 content before and never noticed this problem.
Perhaps a more important finding:
1.1 definitely won't play back the 5.1 soundtrack that AppleTv 2.0 will.
However, as 5.1 movies ALSO have an AAC soundtrack, AppleTV 1.1 will still output this audio track correctly from files that have both - so no real problem running both versions on your network.

Display aspect ratio in T400 with Ati

When I put a program into fullscreen mode with Ati, it stretches the program's display aspect ratio wrong. Ati should have some kind of way to change this in the Catalysts but I can't find it. In basic mode it says you need to put the manager to advanced mode to change it and then in advanced mode there just simply isn't such an option. So how can I change this. And also I can't just go to upload the drivers because god only knows which driver versions work with switchable graphics and which don't. I'm using Win7.
Well, at least it seems that I still have a good reason to tell ppl to avoid anything which has something to do wtih AMD or Ati.

Do Image>Resize>Image Size (this is in PSE2, it might be different in PSE4). Enter 1 in either the Width or Height box, and the other value will be adjusted accordingly. Then click the Cancel button!!

FCP 5 Canvas aspect ratio 1 percent hire than Viewer

Hi, I'm somewhat new to fcp and can't figure out this problem. Here it is:
The aspect ratio (if that's what you call it) in the viewer is at 86% and in the canvas it is at 87%. Both are set to "fit to window". How can I match these up or is it normal?

Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV (3.2)

Compressor: DV/ DVCPRO - NTSC

To match them exactly, if you insist on using "Fit to Window", is to get the Viewer and Canvas Windows exactly the same size.
I wouldn't bother, just use 50% for both. Your realtime performance will be better, too, if you do.
BTW: Do you really want to be editing NTSC footage in UK?!
Also: it's not "aspect ratio", it's "window magnification". Aspect ratio is the ratio between the width and height of the picture, typically 4:3 or 16:9.
