Clip Notes + Streaming QuickTime = broken?

I guess this is more of an AME or Reader issue, but figure that PPro users are the most common users of Clip Notes...
I've tried exporting a Clip Notes PDF with streaming QuickTime video from both PPro CS3 + AME, PPro CS4 + AME, and standalone AME CS4, and all of them report an error: "Acrobat has encountered an error while playing this media clip:"
If I use QT but select to embed the file, it works fine. If I use WMV, either embedded or streamed, it works fine. I have confirmed that I'm setting the URL correctly in the Clip Notes settings. The QT spit out by the Clip Notes export plays fine in QT Player, so I know the video itself isn't broken. I'm attempting to play/view these using Reader 8.1.3.
Obviously, the solution would be to not use QT, or to at least embed it, but it's a much larger file than can be comfortably sent to my client (who isn't that technologically savvy). I like the QT option because of the ability to easily navigate/rewind the video.
Anyone else experiencing issues with Clip Notes and streaming QuickTime?

I'm using Vista 64.
I was having the same problem with the transport controls not showing up.
I set AcroRd32.exe to run in XP mode and that fixed the problem with the embedded movie file.
Transport controls show up.
Thanks.
I hoped that would also fix the QT streaming problem.
However, if I select "Streaming" and upload it to my server then when the Clip Notes tries to play the file it says "
This happened also before I set AcroRd32 to XP mode.
No problem with "Clip Notes Windows Media" format.  It uploads and plays fine.
The .mov file is on the server.   I can play it fine in a browser.
Any ideas why Adobe Reader won't play a streaming .mov file in Clip Notes, but will play a streaming .wmv file?
You really need to use QT so you can scrub the timeline.
.wmv files don't let you scrub!
Adobe why haven't you after all these years made Clip Notes use flash?
If you did it would truly be cross-platform.
Thanks.

• Clip Notes streaming export causes Reader media clip error

MacPro HDV captured into PPCS4, export OK to Adobe Clip Notes streaming, uploads .mov file to my FTP site OK. The .mov clip plays fine locally in QT. When I open the clip notes pdf in Acrobat 9 Reader for Mac or Acrobat 8 Pro on Vista, both give the same error on opening: Javascript window - error reading media clip. The clip does not load into the pdf, and I can not get error information to debug.
Answer: I need QT streaming server. The Clip Notes streaming is true streaming, not progressive-download or pseudo-streaming. I did not see this in the Premiere CS4 documentation.

• IMac Duo will not stream Quicktime behind my router.

Just bought a new iMac Duo it will not stream QT behind my Linksys router. Now I know this is a bug in QT and a port not being open for this new version of QT on the Duo because all other Macs I have work fine.
If I move the iMac Duo to a DMZ zone it will stream just fine.
Now what UDP or TCP port range do I need to open for this iMac Duo version of QT 7.0.4 to stream properly ?????
Thank you for your help.

Does this affect the system even without the firewall turned on? I don't have the firewall enabled (at least I think it is off - bear with me as this is my first Mac I noticed that neither the HTTP (port 80) nor UDP (port 554) work for my iMac, although my wife's iBook G4 and my other PC, an Athlon64 Windows XP box, play streaming Quicktime flawlessly over HTTP behind my NetGear DSL router. My iMac fails with connection error -5420.
All things considered, since I am a recent Mac owner (only had the thing for a about a week) and it is my first, I am very happy. I am just a bit disappointed in Apple for a problem like this since media technologies are their bread and butter.
Any more thoughts are certainly welcome.

• Clip Notes in CS4: questions about streaming

I've used Clip Notes before with small, embedded files, but this is my first time with a large video that I want to stream on a server. Maybe someone can answer a few questions:
Where do I name the movie file? The export dialog only has a place to name the PDF.
How does the URL setting work? The documentation simply says "This is where your video file is located" but that puts the cart before the horse. How can I specify the name and location of a movie that hasn't been created yet and for which I have no control over the name? The FTP feature works great, but it's for upload only, not for naming.
After exporting the movie and PDF, is there a way to re-generate the PDF w/o having to re-export the movie? I realized I wanted to make some changes to the PDF only (like instructions and URL), and exporting another movie will take time that isn't necessary.
I learned here earlier that only the QuickTime option will provide player controls. But a big .mov requres a streaming server, which I don't have. The .wmv option has the opposite problem. Does anyone know of a workaround (or other method entirely) that will use Flash video? FLV or F4V will do progressive downloading with small file sizes for online viewing.

Where do I name the movie file? The export dialog only has a place to name the PDF.
The name you assign to the PDF is also assigned to the exported movie file, regardless of whether you use QT or WMV. So, if you set the name of the PDF in the Export Settings to "clipnotes.pdf", the video will be either "clipnotes.mov" or "clipnotes.wmv", depending on the format you've chosen.

See above. Since you now know what the filename will be, you just have to decide where the file will reside on your server, and input this into URL field. Using our example from above, you'd use enter something like "http://www.mysite.com/upload/clipnotes.mov". It's a full URL, with the "http://" needed; just change the pertinent details.

Maybe, though I haven't tested this:
Trash the original PDF file.
Temporarily rename your originally-exported movie file, or move it to a different folder so that it's not overwritten.
Set your export range to one frame, using the same settings and same name that you did for your first export, and restart the export.
Throw away the new movie file, and rename the original or move it back to it's original folder. Since the only connection the PDF has to the movie file is the URL and filename, this should work.

I don't think you need a streaming server; I've tested QuickTime off a regular ol' HTTP server and it works fine. Incidentally, I should add, QuickTime streaming WASN'T working for me previously, at all. I just tried it out, and it would seem that a recent update to Adobe Reader might have fixed the issue. Streaming WMV always worked fine. Curious.
As far as Flash: are you talking about using Flash Video in ClipNotes, or just Flash Video viewing online, in general? At this time, ClipNotes is QuickTime or WMV only, but I wouldn't be suprised if Flash Video makes an appearance in ClipNotes CS5, given the whole focus on Flash in the Adobe ecosystem. If you're talking about general FLV playback, check out the JW FLV Media Player; it's an fairly simple-to-configure Flash Video player that can be embedded into a webpage.

• IPod Touch 2.2.1 Stopped Streaming Quicktime Clips

Hello,
I searched and couldn't find any info on why my iPod Touch 2G stopped streaming quicktime clips from the site drummerworld.com.
This has not been an issue until recently, and now I just get a strange icon rather than a clip playing. Any info would be great as I visit this site quite often for tips and such.
Since it is tied to the OS you are running, you really don't have any control over which version of Quicktime you are running.
Ok, I'm running v 7.6 which is the same as the site.
Perhaps the site has changed something ? This is strange because it worked for the first few weeks.

• Clip Notes in CS4/Acrobat 9: exports transcript, no controls for QuickTime

When I use the Transcribe feature, then export my project to Clip Notes, it exports every transcribed word as a separate comment. There doesn't seem to be any way of suppressing that, and there doesn't seem to be a way of deleting a transcription either in PP or in Acrobat. The result is that the reviewer sees all these comments and has to fight with Acrobat to insert new comments. When I import the xfdf back into PP, I get the whole transcription loaded into markers along with the reviewer's comments. Unless I open every one, I can't tell what's what.
Is there at least a way of deleting the transcription in PP or Acrobat?
Also, if I export the video as QuickTime, there are no player controls in Acrobat. I only get player controls if I export as Windows Media. That means that some Mac users won't be able to use my Clip Notes exports. I've seen others asking about this, but no answers. Any ideas? I'm running this under Windows Vista Ultimate.

But I find it amazing that there's no way to delete the damn thing. Adobe made a big deal of transcription, but it seems they didn't regard it as more than a gimmick, since they did it half-baked. I think you're right that it's best not to use this "feature".
I don't know if it's necessarily half-baked, so much as it is an overly optimistic appraisal of the capability of the technology at this point in time. I mean, it does create words, and sometimes very interesting ones at that
What's interesting to me is that when I tested out the transcribe feature back when Adobe released the beta of Soundbooth CS4, it was MUCH more accurate--and I was testing it on the mixed, final soundtrack of a documentary captured from Betacam SP. The transcription wasn't anywhere near 100%, but it was actually usable. Now, it struggles on pristine audio from a single, clear voice track. Wish it wasn't so...
Anyway, you can stop the transcription from appearing in a Clip Notes export. Check out the following screenshot for the how-to:

• PPCS4.1/4.2 / Adobe Clip Notes - QuickTime All Screwed Up

Ok, so I am trying to create an Adobe Clip Notes for a client to review. I've done this with CS3 in the past just fine.
My project is a P2 DVCPROHD 720p project, and when I export, I choose Adobe Clip Notes, and the "NTSC Widescreen Source to 1024kbps" preset. All I changed was setting the video option to "Stream", set the URL, and entered my e-mail address.
The preset shows that the video should be 854x480 pixels, but the rendered file is an 1139x480 pixel video. The image looks right but there are just giant black bars on the left and right of my video, not to mention the encoding looks like crap due to the wasted encoding space.
Mathmatically, this seems like a pixel aspect issue, where it is multiplying 854pixels by a 1.333 aspect... but there are no options for this in the Export settings.
I've tried changing the resolution and it seems that the numbers always keep the aspect even if the "link" button is off.
Help!
Any why the heck can't I use my Flash Media Server with Adobe Clip Notes? Doesn't it make more sense for Adobe to implement it's own product first?

Nope, just an Adobe made P2 DVCPRO HD 720p preset. The pixel aspect is 1.333.
I did get a 4x3 aspect once, and I had to leave the video set to embedded for that to work. Then I duplicated the export in AME, and changed only the video to stream and set a URL, and it was back to the crazy black bars on the sides. Trouble with the embedded is that I can't view the properties of the video.
I even created a NEW Adobe sequence and put only a graphic in it and it did the same thing. I then created a custom sequence that used square pixels and it did the same thing.
I gave up. I'm just going to have to forego Clip Notes and submit this to my Flash Media Server. I've spent too much time trying to figure this out when it should work out of the box. There seems to me more broke by moving the exporting to the new Adobe Media Encoder than keeping it in Premiere as with CS3.
Maybe I'll fiddle with it later, but for now I am on a deadline.

• Adobe clip notes quicktime playback Win XP 64

Hello
Havng an issue and wondering if anyone has experinced similar problem. When I open adobe clip notes .pdf file in adobe reader (that I exported in PrPro CS4) on windows xp pro 64 bit- the video comes up but the little quicktime play bar with play, pause and stop does not show up- just black where the bar should be. Now I can click on the black and if I click in the correct areas (blindly) I can still pause and play and fast forward- but this is not a good option. When I play the same pdf in Windows XP pro 32 bit the quicktime bar works just fine. I have quicktime 7.6.4 installed on my XP pro 64 bit machine.
I can export to Windows media and that works with both XP 32 bit and 64 bit- but windows media player won't allow me to scrub the video forward and back like quicktime does
Any suggestions
Thanks

• CS4 - Clip Notes Export - streaming option

Anybody wanna save me a little time experimenting and go into a little more detail than is available in the manual? There is of course the promise of 10 points in it for you.
If I choose file/export/adobe clip notes and in the clip notes tab also choose "stream" and then check FTP in the others tab with all of the pertinent info including remote directory and back in the clip notes panel use the ftp address for the url setting - here is where I'm starting to get confused. Does the url setting need to include the path to the remote directory? Do I have to upload an encoded version of my sequence manaully to that direcory or does Media encoder upload that automatically? I've watched a couple of video tuts and read the manual but have no actual experience at this and would love to start using this feature with a client I am working with now.
TIA

edit - nope didn't work. I know the manual mentions that the ftp server also needs to be a web server. iDisk is a web server. I tried also just pointing to the file - with out the sharing which is probably not necessary - providing of course I have the right url path - didn't work. Could be the path I'm typing. http://www.me.com/idisk/my user name/movies/the file name
The work around I'm going to employ in the meantime is to do the embed option and upload that larger sized file to the ftp manually. Then when they save it it will email the smaller .xfdf file back to me and I merely import it.
What is a bit odd is that Adobe didn't use flash as a method of encoding this clip notes file. The same size .flv for the particular file I'm using as a test looks much nicer than either the .wmv or the .mov  Adobe owns flash right?
Are you talking about the FTP upload function here? Because that HAS to be a proper FTP server in order for the FTP upload to work. In other words, if your website is http://www.mysite.com, you would need FTP access at ftp://ftp.mysite.com. Now, ClipNotes doesn't access fils through FTP, it access streaming files through HTTP, so wherever the file is hosted on the Internet, it needs to be accessible through the HTTP protocol. I'd imagine that your iDisk (is that the Mac thing?) would probably work for HOSTING the file, but you'd need to find an alternate means of uploading the encoded video to that host. There's probably some sort of web-based front-end for iDisk, instead of having FTP access as a typically web host would provide.
Long story short: you don't have to use the FTP upload built into AME in order to use Clip Notes. You DO have to set the URL for the uploaded video properly, but the video does not have to be uploaded by AME in order for Clip Notes to work. The file will be encoded and saved locally, to wherever you opt, and you can manually upload the encoded video later. This is how I imagine you'd have to use the iDisk hosting/space.
Does that make any sense?
I've often wondered why Adobe didn't opt for Flash in Clip Notes, and the only thing I can come up with is the Flash video container file doesn't provide for accurate enough seeking. Flash video tends to jump to specific keyframes, making navigation (and therefore, commenting via Clip Notes) a challenge or even impossible. I guess it's conceivable that they'll work something out in a later revision of Clip Notes, but that's merely wishful thinking.

QuickTime on my iMac will not stream Steves latest Keynote. However on my PC there's no problem at all...
When I try to stream in Safari QT opens in a new window but all it does is running back and forth on its blue line while it says connecting...

Thanks for your reply. This video was recorded by my own professional camera, Sony PMW EX 3, two years back. But I am neither a professional cameraman nor an editor. I am just like a beginner in both.  I didnt have space in my storage device, so I just copied all my clips, thinking I can edit it latter, without recompressing or editing or whatever I should have done it at that point of time.  Now I need to edit it and use it in my profession. I am very upset.  Please help me in going step by step to get it in FCP X for editing.  Also I would like to know, do I need to buy the Compressor 4 for any reason. I dont mind in buying, if you think it is going to be useful for some reason.  Thank you very much in anticipation for any kind of proper guidance.

• Quicktime not streaming movies properly

I watch streaming media a lot, and I was really surprised when the first problem I had was a quicktime streaming problem. The audio is coming through crystal clear, but I see no video at all.
Any ideas?

I'm facing different issues with Quicktime not streaming....I'm trying to access shared files over a LAN and sooner or later it's like QT loses the signal, can't buffer, and gives me rainbow wheel.
Do you see a blank white screen?
What you are quite possibly experience is a missing codec, the XVID codec.
Download it by opening Quicktime under System Preferences, going to "update" tab and clicking "install". You'll be taken to a list; select Xvid; then "Xvid component for QuickTime"; "XviD Component Binary" and then follow the instructions included.
Downloading "Perian" might be an easier solution than this--i believe it contains xvid as well.
Is anyone else having problems streaming/reading shared video since the 10.5.2 update and/or 7.4.1??? Any kind souls have suggestions? I've tried thousands of approaches and nothing works.

• Quicktime Movies not streaming with iWeb

When I created a movie using the Homepage feature in iLife05 the QT time movie starts playing immediately while it is downloading. See here:

I used iMovie in iLife06 and created a page for iWeb. This one does not stream like the older one. It downloads the entire movie beofre it starts playing.
http://web.mac.com/scarbrd/iWeb/Scarbroughs/Y%202%20K.html

In iMovie06, I used the "Share" feature and choose iWeb.
Am I doing something wrong? Any help is appreciated.
David
www.scarbrough.cc

The "streaming" feature refers to movies that are going to be broadcast from a QT Streaming Server. If you are hosting on .Mac you are not using a Streaming Server. What you want is progressive download where it mimics streaming, but it is actually allowing the viewer to view the movie as it downloads to their local machine (in the web browser's cache).
To do this, just enable Fast Start Compressed Header in the options.
Oh, and if you use the Streaming option, the movie has little "hints" added to it and that makes the file much larger than it should be. So, you might want to re-export the movie and post it again.
