Clip overwrite moves my whole timeline.

Not quite sure how to tag this one. I have just imported a project that I started on FC Express in to my new FCPro 5. Everything went except that two clips that were slowed down in the original project now freeze.
It's a music video and everything is already in sync so, working on the first clip I cut it with the intention of bringing the same clip on to V2 above the new gap, slowing it, trimming it and then dragging it down in to the gap. But when I overwrite the clip in to V2 it cuts the music track and moves all the clips on V1.
I'm sure I went through this in the Pro training series book, but I can't remember what I'm doing wrong....

As you drag a clip to the timeline you will notice that the cursor will change to an arrow. At the top of a track (audio or video) the arrow will point to the right. If you drop the clip at that point everything in your timeline will push to the right.
As you move the cursor to the bottom of a track the arrow will point down. If you drop the clip at that point it will simply insert and overwrite whatever is at that point.

Yet when you go into the actual project itself, you can play the whole timeline back and there aren't any clips showing that the media is offline. Does anyone have any solutions?

What version is FCPX and what version is your OS?
How are you exporting and with what preset?

  • Move quickly along timeline

How do I move quickly along timeline if I am at the end of a long clip and want to start viewing at or near the beginning, or vice versa?
Scrolling seems to make the program crash.  In a different - but awful - editing program, I was able to double-click anywhere along the timeline and the cursor (or whatever you call that red line) would jump over and start playing at the start of the clip I clicked.  That was an easy way to move quickly through lots of footage without hearing the soundtrack play backwards, etc.
Right now I'm practicing with a short video but soon will be working on a long video where I'm editing and joining several days worth of clips of varying sizes and file types.
Also, how do I edit specific volume points in the timeline?  The instructions seem clear about changing volume as a whole, but the fade out option doesn't fade out sufficiently and there will be times when i want to change the volume of just a few seconds of footage.
    Thanks,
    A

You can quickly get to any point on your timeline in a number of ways. The easiest way to get to the beginning is to press the Home key.
You can also drag the CTI (playhead), use the speed scrubber slider on the Monitor panel or click on the timecode displayed on the Monitor panel and type in the exact place on the timeline you want to go.
Editing the volume at specific points on your timeline is best handled with keyframing. With keyframing, you add keyframe points to your timeline representing specific effects settings or audio levels, placing the keyframes higher or lower as needed.
There is some information on audio keyframing in the Help files, but I also cover it in depth in my books.

  • Is there a way to make an audio clip not cover the whole project? I want to add audio clip or song and let it start at a certain point in the project. I'm working with iMovie on IPad!

Is there a way to make an audio clip not cover the whole project in iMovie? I want to add audio clip or song and let it start at a certain point in the project. Whenever I add audio or song it covers the whole project. I'm working with iMovie on IPad!

Thank you for your reply Karsten but unfortunately this didn't help me so far. Or maybe I'm missing something?
First the link is a tutorial for iMovie on a Mac. I'm using iMovie on iPad so the steps are inapplicable.
Second it is only possible for me to manipulate the end part of the sound clip to whichever duration I want. But I can't do the same with the 'beginning' of the sound clip.
I simply want to place some photos in the beginning of my video with no sound in the background then after like 2 secs I want to start the music clip. For some reason that is not possible! Cause every time I drop the music clip unto my project timeline it automatically place it self along with the first frame in the project! And consequently the photos and music are forced to start together.
    Hope I'm making sense...

  • Utility or script "each clip = new movie and let media file = name"

I've found out that if I want to split a clip at the playhead and make it a new AS-IS original with a unique media file name designation; I have to go through:
file>export> as full quality movie > check the "selected clips only " box > copy and paste the name and then designate destination folder> CLICK and then wait until done. (Thank you Karl)
Unfortunately, completing this process with 180 clips per project x 15 to 20 projects per quarter... well it was more than I was prepared to do.
Therefore... is there anyone out there who could (or has already) program(ed) some kind of script/utility/add-on that would create a new AS-IS clip from each clip that was "split at the playhead" and ALSO, make those final clips as well as every other existing clip in the project have its media file designation the same as its name.
ie "each clip = new full quality movie and let its media file = name."
This would save me around 10 hours per week.
mac pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Karsten is correct. iMovie itself does not support AppleScript.
But for applications that don't support AppleScript, Apple offers a "System Events" AppleScripting alternative. It lets an AppleScript script use System Events to do things in OTHER applications. It can act on window objects, like click on a button. Theoretically, System Events can do just about any task in iMovie.
    Except, unfortunately, select a clip.
That's right, there is no way to select a clip with a script. So a script can't control which object to act on. YOU have to select the clip manually. That's not an insurmountable problem, but it does mean you can't tell the script to export every clip in the Timeline.
Probably the easiest way to do what you want is with QuicKeys, the third-party software that lets you define tasks, then assign a key to perform that task. Just about any task you can imagine. One kind of task is a macro to perform a series of actions. QuicKeys lets you record macros in any application. Its record function makes macro-writing pretty easy.
(QuicKeys is one of those utilities I wouldn't be without. I use QuicKey keys hundreds of times a day for repetitive tasks.)
Back to AppleScript. Theoretically, QuickTime Player Pro can do what you want. QuickTime Player is VERY scriptable.
Here's the trick: Each time we save the iMovie project, iMovie updates the "Timeline Movie.mov" that's inside the Cache folder (inside the project package). When iMovie saves, it sets the selected frames of that movie to match the selected clip in the TimeLine. When you open the "Timeline Movie.mov" in QuickTime Player, the selected video/audio matches the clip selected in iMovie.
So after you select a clip in iMovie, an AppleScript could save the iMovie project (to update the Timeline Movie), open the Timeline Movie in QuickTime, Copy the selected frames, Paste them into a new movie, then save the new movie.
Back to QuicKeys. QuicKeys can work across multiple applications just like an AppleScript. So theoretically you could run part of a macro in iMovie and another part in QuickTime Player. And, if I recall, QuicKeys can run AppleScript scripts.
What you REALLY want is an application that knows how to read iMovie project files and automatically exports each clip to its own movie.
Maybe I'm missing some simple work-around. That'd be sweeeeeet!
Yup. Sometimes the best solution is to avoid the problem, not solve it.
We can export a project to the camera, then re-import it to a new iMovie project. When we do, most clips on the Timeline return as discrete clips. Clips like titles will not be editable, of course.
That is best done early on, before we add titles, transitions and such. Import the newly-shot video, do a rough edit to get rid of the stuff you don't want, export the Timeline to the camera, re-import to a new project. All the junk will be gone and now each clip is a discrete clip with its own source file. NOW add titles and such.

  • Stretching the whole timeline in Motion 2

    Hi guys,
I was or am working on a project which is almost finished but the movie needs to be a little bit slower. I already read that there is no real possibility to enlarge the whole timeline - just via the scrubbing filter.
Is there no other way to scale the whole timeline? And how does it work in Motion 3?

Slower or longer? Allowing for a possible translation error, which do you need?
If you make it slower, all of your timing changes and most of your effects will need to be redesigned.
Longer is easy, just enter a new value in the length field. But then you have to pull out your layers and groups to cover the new length. Just grab them and pull to the right. But that won't work in all cases, of course. If you are using a ten second movie you cannot pull it out to 12 seconds without heavy processing.

  • Why does Premiere Elements 12 not react, by trying to start movie over the timeline?

I am using Premiere 12 Elements. Sometimes it happens, today again, that Premiere does not react anymore. It does not crash, I can add Effects oder cut the film, but I can not start the movie on the timeline.
I tried to empty the cache and sometime it helps. But it can be, that it was only accedentely, that it worked then.
    My Computerconfig:
Intel I7 Prozessor, 8 GB RAM, 2 Gigabyte HD, Win 8.1 64 bit, AMD Radeon HD5700
I am happy for every answer, that helps.
    Thank you

Are you working from the 12.1 Update of 12? If not, please do so using an opened project's Help Menu/Update.
I have the actual Update on the Computer. After I installed it about two month ago, I updated it over th Updatebutton and Premiere says to me, that I have the latest Version. My Version is 12.1 (620140 225.12.1.620828).
What is the size of the project when the Timeline playback is not possible? Is this event associated with any particular
added effect, title creation, or video or audio transition placement?
What do you mean with the size of the project? If you mean the size of the videoscreensize, I can give the information, that it is a Full HD Video.
If you mean the size of the Projectdata, it is 994 Kb.
In this project a keymask (4 points) is used, that a video from another track is visible with the mainvideo on Track one. And there are two faders in the video, thats all. No titles and so on.
Where are the Scratch Disks directed and how much free hard drive space is at that location?
Did you install the program to the default Local Disk C?
Do you mean with Scratchdisks the path to the Cache? If so, I tried different pathes. On both Disks are 700 GB free space, butit did not make a difference. I emptied the cache, schanged the pathes, emptied again, but the result was the same. No reaction.
I installed Premiere into the default given path during the installation. And that was c:\Program Files (x86).
Video card/graphics card up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card?
For Device Manager/Display Adapters, is AMD Radeon HD5700 the only listing?
Yes, the Videocard is up tp date, I compared my driver Version with the Version on the Website. It is the same . And there is only one Graphic Display in the Device Manager.
When this event happens, how are you getting out of it so that you can move on in that opened project?
I can use the program normal anyway. I can do everything I like, but I can not start the Video over the timeline. Even if I stop the program by leaving it over the regular menu, and doing a restart of the whole computer, the result is the same. The software runs, it loads all the sourcefiles, they are placed on the tmeline and I can do everthing, but not start the video on the timeline.

  • Speed change affects whole timeline????

When I change the speed a clip in my timeline, it shifts my whole timeline out of sync. Im sure this is just a setting but i cant figure it out. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

    thats how it works db
you have a clip which already exists in the timeline, it has an in point and an out point and hence a duration. changing its speed will therefore change the duration, making it longer if you slow it down, or shorter if you speed it up. any changes you make will obviously ripple through the rest of the timeline.
its best to adopt a new approach. change the speed before you place the clip in the timeline
a neat trick is to use the match frame to source function ...
park your playhead on the first frame of the clip in the timeline that you want to change
press cmd-opt-f to match frame the source into the viewer
press cmd-j to open the speed dialog to adjust as wanted
press f-11 to replace the timeline instance with the slower/faster version in the viewer
    hope it helps

  • Adjust end of clip and move all other clips accordingly

having found this help topic about trimming clips: Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Trimming clips, i figured i might be able to figure out how to adjust the end of a clip and move all subsequent media content accordingly.
the situation would be: adding a word to dialogue, cutting out a word, something like that -- where you have to shorten or lengthen a clip, and you need to move all subsequent content accordingly.
i used to know the name of the folks that did the study in the late 90's regarding help file "readability," which then resulted in the trend that help files don't offer the ability to dig deeper into the definitions of a software's vocabulary, but i forgot.
    at any rate:
i don't know what the blue thing is called with which one moves around on adobe's timeline.
now, i'm assuming i'll be able to dig that up.
but i have a series of graphics -- and i want to move adjust the length of time graphic1 appears (let's say extend it's length). i'd like to "bump" or "move" or "ripple," or "roll," or "regular edit," the graphic so that -- when i move the right side of the graphic -- all subsequent graphics get "bumped" to the right (later in time).
while i appreciate the alliteration of regular ripple and rolling edits, i did need to try them out to see what they do.
and none of them appear to "bump" all subsequent content.
i gather that i could "lasso" all of the subsequent content and nudge it and/or move it around -- but really -- i'd like to be in clip 19 -- adjust when that clip ends -- and move all subsequent content either later or earlier in time -- accordingly.
ideally that "desire" would extent into: i am just going to move visual content, and "i am going to move visual and audio content."
please have compassion for my "negative" tone, because i am having a bit of a "losing faith in humanity" moment right now - because i took about a 5 year break from tech and am now returning to tech -- and i expected user procedures to have improved.
i'll be OK and will likely blog about it, but for now: can you either tell me some keyboard shortcuts or direct me to help files or just explain -- how to edit the various types of content in premiere the way i've outlined?
i want to move all of the subsequent content over to the right. i do not want to just move the end of the last clip and the start of the next clip -- keeping the end of the next clip in the same place (which is apparently what the red double double arrow does).
i seem to have tried out "regular, ripple, and roll," and maybe i'm almost there -- or one of those methods actually works -- but the word that is coming to mind is "bump."
    bump or nudge or adjust...
    anyway -- got any tips?

hey Michael, your reply helps restore my faith in your humanity -- but seriously -- i need to use the "ripple delete tool" to NOT delete -- but extend and push?
    really?
that is as obnoxious as going to the start button to shut down.
how about going to the shut down button to start? how about that Bill Gates.
and we still can't tell the difference between a lowercase l and an uppercase I online. Good job humanity. Sometimes even the 1 is the same as l and I  -- so you have 1lI  all looking the same.
My 8 year old daughter thought I live in LLLinois? She was trying to read Illinois.
Of course I have to go to "delete" to extend. What else? I have to go to start to shut down.
ps --- that is why humanity has gone through the effort to call those thingies on doors: handles. See a handle can be used to open AND close a door.
it is not the "close knob" it is the "door knob." why? because you can use it to open and close.
it is not the on/off button -- though some call it that -- it is the "power" button.
You go through the effort to create vocabulary that makes sense if you are going to create and sell software. I understand that sometimes it can be hard, but there are plenty of people, myself included, who have the intellectual capacity -- to find or create these kinds of cohesive procedural flows -- to a large extent due to our linguistic abilities.
it's not rocket science, but it is, in a particular way -- quite difficult. it requires mental effort or some kind of "capacity," to realize that a "handle" often moves us between two or even more states -- like: open and closed.
that is why we do not call it the "on" button.
what does my HP printer have? oh it has an "on" button.
    dumb dumb dumb dumb
    more dumb
and then -- i am even accosted with dumb -- from adobe?
like awesome software industry standard adobe?
like "we made PDF files" adobe?
    are you serious?
ugh -- ok i will go to "delete" to NOT delete and extend
i don't even care what that yellow thing is called anymore. i am just going to press command and click and get this project done for now...

  • Movie clips within movie clips

I have a movie clip (I'll call it B_mov) inside another movie
clip (A_mov). When you click a button in A_mov, B_mov plays. At the
end of B_mov, I used stop(); to make it stop. How do I return to
A_mov from there? I assume this is ActionScript territory.
This is coming from someone who has just taken his first baby
step into AS, navigating a single timeline via buttons, but I have
no idea how to move between different timelines.
Is this something that can be easily explained? If it's
really complicated, I don't want to burden anyone.
...Would I be better off finding an online AS tutorial? Can
someone please point me in the right direction?

    supaaman,

    Okay.

    Makes sense so far. :)
    > How do I return to A_mov from there? I assume this
    > is ActionScript territory.
Well, you've already entered ActionScript territory by
    programming your
button and adding that stop() action, so that's a good thing.
    When you say
"return to A_mov," what do you mean? What would like like
    A_mov to do at
    this point?
    > This is coming from someone who has just taken his
    > first baby step into AS, navigating a single timeline
    via
    > buttons, but I have no idea how to move between
    > different timelines.
Timelines are synonymous with movie clips, and movie clips
    are defined
by something called the MovieClip class. In fact, all objects
    in
ActionScript are defined by corresponding classes (text
    fields are defined
by the TextField class, arrays by the Array class, and so
    on).
Thinking of it this way, you can consult the MovieClip class
    entry of
the ActionScript Language Reference (the Help panel) to find
    out everything
you need to know about movie clips. The characteristics of
    the object are
called properties (you'll find references to width, height, x
    and y
position, etc.). Things the object can do, such as stop(),
    play(), and the
like, are called methods. Things the object can react to --
    mouse clicks,
for example -- are called events.
You haven't stated what version of ActionScript you're
    using, and the
exact wording of your code depends on that, but for example,
    in ActionScript
2.0, you'll find that movie clips have a _parent property (in
    ActionScript
3.0, it's simply parent). This property allows the movie clip
    in question
to refer to its parent timeline (that is, its parent movie
    clip). That
might be a step in the right direction for you, but I'm not
    sure what you
    have in mind.
Instead of simply invoking stop() in the final keyframe of
    B_mov, you
    might do something like this:
    stop();
    _parent.play();
... which invokes the MovieClip.stop() method on B_mov's
    timline (because
that's where the reference to stop() appears: in B_mov's
    timeline) and then
makes a reference to B_mov's parent via the MovieClip._parent
    property.
That reference therefore invokes MovieClip.play() on A_mov.
The reason it works here is entirely because of the point of
    view from
which the code operates: namely, keyframes in B_mov's
    timeline. If your
code were all on the main timeline, your methods would be the
    same -- stop()
and play() -- but your object references would be different.
    Does that make sense?

  • How to move a whole animation

I'm using CS4 (actually the original fla was written in 2004MX) and have a completed frame-by-frame animation which is now in the wrong place on the Stage.
The final animation now only takes up a small part of the original stage, so I want to move the whole thing ( a complicated mixture of frame-by-frame and tweens , 6 layers and 700 frames) up to the top-left corner and then reduce the document to fit.
Am I missing a very simple solution?
    Thanks
    Dave

Here is a little trick, select all of the frames and right click and
copy all frames then create a movieclip then select the first frame
and right click and paste frames. That will take all the assets and
the animation and paste it in the movieclip then you will see the
animation when you put the movieclip on the stage.

  • Every clip needs rendering once in timeline

This is a new problem. I dealt with my last short project by constantly rendering. This is a bigger project, so I really need to get back to the old way of doing things where you can drop a clip into the timeline and it's ready to go, and you can slide it this way and that without re-rendering.
Why are all my clips needing to be rendered when I place them into the timeline???
    Thanks.
    Roxane

#28 Having to render every clip in the timeline
Shane's Stock Answer #28: When I put a clip in the timline, I have to render it before it will play. Why?
Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.
However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.
Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:
This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured.

  • Changing a clip's speed in the timeline...

I tried searching for this and looking around in the preferences but couldn't find anything.
When I change a clip's speed in the timeline, how do stop FCP from shifting all the other clips that follow on the timeline?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Warren. I"m not sure if there is an easy way to undo this, but one thing you can do is just copy the clip into a new sequence, make the speed change and then paste it back into place in the original sequence. If you're slowing it down, you'll have to shrink the duration of the clip some to make it fit in its original location.
