Clip Proxy Resolution

Hi everyone,
Does anyone know if you can change the size (resolution) of the automatically generated clip proxies? FCServer creates 384x216 Quicktimes, which are OK for basic viewing - but on our high res monitors, I'd prefer something a little bigger for my users.
I've tried different Compressor settings under Administration -> Preferences -> Analyize, including creating my own custom preset. Once I've either re-analyzed, or imported a new clip - I find that the new proxy has been created using my desired settings (codec, etc) ... but the resolution has been changed to the default 384 x 216.
I'm not after full frame clips, but I would prefer a vertical resolution of more than 216 pixels!
I notice in the FCServer tutorial videos the clip proxies seem at least twice the size, so I figure it must be possible. What am i missing?
I know this is a minor thing, but my reviewers would greatly appreciate the larger frame size :o)
Any ideas?

Hi everyone,
Sorry to raise this topic to the top again, but I'm still none the wiser!
I've been able to run several tests to see at what stage the problem may be occurring. Here's what I've discovered:
Sticking with H.264 as my format of choice, I've created two custom Compressor presets:
*Preset 1. A 800kbps quicktime MOV based preset using the H.264 compressor. The resolution of the clips is set to 640x480 under the Geometry tab.*
*Preset 2. A preset using the H.264 For iPod Video 640x480 template, changing the .m4v file extension to .mov (else the proxy will open in iTunes!)*
I've then added those presets to FCServer, set them as the preset for Clip Proxy analysis, re-analyzed a couple of clips, and here's the results:
*Preset 1. Same problem. Although the geometry setting is 640x480, the resulting proxy clip is smaller.*
*Preset 2. Result! The resulting proxy file is 640x480 for 4:3 content, and 640x360 for 16:9.*
I guess the reason for this has something to do with the fact the "H.264 For Apple Devices" compressor restricts the frame size, and automatically handles changes in aspect ratio.
While this temporarily fixes my problem, it's not ideal. The "H.264 For Apple Devices" compressor offers very limited choices for encoding, and seems to take about twice as long to encode as Preset 1.
It seems that FCServer has some preset resolution(s) for clip proxies ... but I can't find where that information is stored. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Oli.

  • Proxy Resolution Problem

I know this a very old issue but I failed to find a solution to it so far.
No matter wich resolution I choose in the custom compressor setting I'm using for proxy, FCSvr always set the proxy resolution 320x240.
Only exception to this rule is when I choose xx% from source but in this case i need to use a custom resolution (480x360) for a web file
Anyone solved this problem in the past?
    Thanks in advance
PS I'm having this problem since FCS 1.1.1 and now I'm using 1.5.2 with Leopard.

    Right:
If your question is where do I get the file is as simple as finding it in the proxies.bundle and send it to an FTP server (which I can also do with a script)
    - you sir are a brave man to be going in there. well done, I salute you. nice solution. have you had any corruption issue with the bundle?
I'm not using Edit Proxies and I don't think I'll be using them in the future so thats not a problem.
    - if you're absolutely sure. I've seen needs change over time, don't block yourself if you don't need to.
No Problem. Yes, I'm referring to the processsing power. Please remember disk speed and I/O speed is as important as CPU power when rendering.
Ok, so really the issue is you can set a custom frame size.
So, you made a custom compressor setting in Compressor.
Added and mapped this setting in FCSvr settings.
Set this to be the setting for clip proxies.
It transcodes, but defaults to some other frame size, is that correct?
If so, what happens when you bypass FCSvr and run the clips directly through Compressor with that setting?

  • Final Cut Server not storing clip proxy in the database

FCS generates a clip proxy but doesn't store it in the database unless the user that installed FCS is logged into the server.
The error message I get is:
    ERROR: EREQERROR
Encountered error using Compressor: <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
I checked that the UID stored in the configuration file for FCS matches the UID of the user that installed FCS per the following:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3282
Note that the clip proxy is stored in the db as long as the user that installed FCS is logged into the server.
I am running FCS on a Mini and have a cluster of three minis running the compression. I've confirmed that it doesn't matter which node in the cluster does the transcode.
Has anybody else experienced this problem ? Have a solution ?

    Sorry about the delay.
Yes I can run compressions on the host using the GUI and the same cluster. I tried several different compressions and they worked without a hitch.
When I use FCS the compression also runs (I can find the transcoded clip file in the spool directory), and batch monitor says it was successful. The problem appears to be that FCS doesn't store it in the db unless I'm logged in to the host server.

  • Create Clip Proxy FAIL

    Hi All,
I am getting the following error when clips are ingested into FCS:
ERROR: EREQERROR Encountered error using Compressor: <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
After doing some snooping around I have found out the following:
    1) This error only occurs if the admin account (which fcsvr is associated with) is not logged in.
    2) I went through the steps here and made sure FCS was connected to the local user acccount (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3282)
    3) Even though FCS shows the error, Compressor does successfully create a proxy video file, but it is not associated with the FCS database
PLEASE HELP!! I haven not been able to find an answer for this anywhere.

#1 is the cause, if you're using the default setup of rendering with This Computer.
This is documented in the setup guide in the section *About the This Computer Cluster*:
"Because the This Computer cluster operates using the name of the current user that is logged in, it cannot be used until a user logs in."
The solution provided there is to use a custom QuickCluster, though I think I may have sometimes still not had things work completely without logging in, so you may have to test it.
A managed render Qmaster cluster on a dedicated computer is the best solution if you have the hardware to support it.

  • Urgent - problems with apache plug-in  proxy resolution

    Hi
I have apache ver as a plug-in to weblogic clustered servers running WL61 SP1. On
one of our boxes, we have a tunnelling to point to apache at port 80.
When I hit from outside (not inside the company extranet), I type in http://www.proxyservername.com/...
This is routed to apache and apache routes it to weblogic running on the internal
    server eg. johnson.xxx.xxx.xxx.com.
The problem I am experiencing is that when I send the request -
http://www.proxyservername.com/../... it gives back response with some session data.
The next request I sent in is a response.sendRedirect(relative url to a jsp page)
, this time it drops the old session and points to johnson.xxx.xxx.com:80.
How can I resolve this client sendRedirect to not flip the server name.
    Thanks in advance.

What exactly is the redirect to (what is the URL)? Secondly, I'm wondering
which step in the chain is adding the :80 to the redirect. Is it Weblogic or
one of the tunnelling doohickies or the browser or what? I would suggest
trying a non-relative URL (fully qualified) to see if that gets messed with
    too.

  • Play video clip button on thumbnail...

    Hello!
Is there a way to customize that button yet? In the beginning stages of FCServer, I remember it only allowed you to play the clip proxy. I'd REALLY like to have the ability to click the button there for original media and maybe another button for clip proxy. Have they done this yet? I figured I'd ask here before calling someone at Apple.
    Thanks!
    Ryan

    Hey!
I do know about the right click/control click and selecting view. It's just that it seems to involve so many steps. Would be nice while searching lots of media to have the ability to play either the clip proxy or original media with 1 click.

  • I am moving clips to the timeline and they arrive zoomed in.  how can I stop this?

need some help.  I'm moving clips to the timeline and they arrive zoomed in.  I don't want this effect.  How can I stop it?

To expand a little on John's questions and link, every clip and every sequence has its own frame dimensions (and pixel aspect ratio & frame rate). By default, Premiere preserves the dimensions (or "resolution") of a clip when you add it to a sequence. That means that if a clip's resolution is greater than that of the sequence, it will appear to be zoomed in on the frame. Conversely, if the clip is lower res than the sequence, it will appear shrunk, with black borders.
If all of your content is the same resolution (which is the ideal case), then you should use a sequence that matches. The easiest way to do so is the "New Item" method that John refers to--dragging a clip to the Project Panel's New Item button--or, in later releases of PPro CC, dragging it into an empty Timeline panel. If you're working with content of mixed resolution, then you have to pick your poison and scale smaller clips up or larger clips down. The latter option is generally preferred because the former--scaling clips up--often results in unacceptable pixelation.

  • FCSer Clip Proxies analysis FAILING. Period.

Over the past two days I have had a lot of problems with FCP Project Files being rejected by FCSer. The error message is always “Unable to analyze project – invalid format”. So I’ve had to go back to previous versions of those projects either from the FCP autosave vault or from the project versions that have been saved on FCSer.
This means that I am forced to re-upload entire projects to FCSer. FCSer then requires all the clip proxies for the 600+ media files within the project file to be transcoded each time I upload clips to the server.
While analyzing the new project Final Cut Server failed to create proxy clips for 50+ of the media files. In the “Search All Jobs” pane it gives the error msg: “ERROR: EBADPARAM Encountered error submitting job to Compressor”. At first I thought it was an issue of giving too much information to the server at once. So after I uploaded the new project file I went into the project’s element pane and tried to analyze the failed clips manually. Again, I got the same error msg.
Then I thought, ‘maybe it’s a compressor issue that just came up’ so I tried uploading a video file that had uploaded/analyzed properly when I re-uploaded the project – and FCSer created the clip proxy for that video file with no error.
Then I thought, maybe the file the project is referencing, which is in my FCSer cache on my internal RAID drive, has been corrupted. So I went back to the source video file I initially used and tried to upload only that file. Again, same error msg: “ERROR: EBADPARAM Encountered error submitting job to Compressor”.
What is really bizarre is that FCSer made proxy clips from those exact same source video files when I uploaded the projects the first time.
So now not only has FCSer decided to NOT analyze specific FCP projects but it has also decided to NOT analyze specific source video files!!
We’re in the middle of production right now and I need to find a solution to these two problems right now. All suggestions are welcome.
NOTE: All the clips in the project are .MOV files and were all shot on the same camera (Sony PDW-F355L) and brought in with the same deck (PDW-F70). There is no size relation to the refusal either. Clips from 250MB to 2GB both generate the same error msg.

I'm using FCSvr 1.1.1 & Quicktime 7.5.5. I can encode the failed clips with Compressor on it's own.
I talked to a tech rep at Apple and he found a partial solution. You have to erase and re-create your network in a very specific manner. With this solution everything works perfectly… except for element clip proxies, which periodically FAIL during transcoding.
The fix is to “search all jobs” with the status FAIL and then, within FCSvr, re-analyze the element clip proxies that failed.
    These are the steps:
    1. Access Apple Qmaster via System Preferences on each computer. Click the 'Stop Sharing' button. Hold down the Option key until the 'Start Sharing' button says 'Reset'. Click the reset button. Shut down the computer.
    2. Turn on the computer you want to be the Cluster Controller. Access Apple Qmaster via System Preferences. Select "Services and cluster controller". Under 'Services' check 'Share' and 'Managed' for Compressor. For 'Selected Service On' make sure you do not add more than half of your processors (instances). Then click on the 'Start Sharing' button.
    4. Turn on your FCSer client computers. Access Apple Qmaster via System Preferences. Select "Services only". Under 'Services' check 'Share' and 'Managed' for Compressor. For 'Selected Service On' make sure you do not add more than half of your processors (instances). Then click on the 'Start Sharing' button.
    5. Go back to your Cluster Controller computer and open Qadministrator. Create a Cluster. Drag and drop the client computers you’re sharing with into your new cluster.
    6. Sign in as admin for FCSer. Select the ‘Server’ button in the upper left of the main FCSer window. Select the ‘Administration…’ from the Server drop down menu. Select ‘Preferences’ from the window that opens. Select the ‘Compressor’ tab. Click on the ‘Compressor Cluster Name’ pop up menu and select your newly created cluster.
    7. Test out the cluster by uploading media files.

  • IMovie 09 doesn't import my Flip Mino HD video in native resolution

My Flip Mino HD records video at 1280x720 resolution. I can confirm this by saving a clip directly to my Mac and looking at its settings in Quicktime. However, when I import into iMovie 09 and try to export the clip, the resolution is only 960x540. What's going on Apple? I even went into Preferences and selected Video and told Import 1080i video to import in full resolution. But no go. Am I missing a setting here or does iMovie have a bug in it?

iMovie does import your video in it's native format. It does not alter it. You have to use QuickTime export to achieve any size over 960x540. As long as your video is progressive 720p (which I believe your Flip is) there should be no issues (there is an issue with Interlaced source). Use Share--> Export using Quicktime and use a high quality codec like h.264 or AIC and set your size to 720.

  • Proxy format question - Prores422 as Proxy? Mpeg-4 as proxy?

In the page 8 of Final Cut Server product Overview, Following was mentioned.
    Automatic Proxy and Thumbnail Generation
Because Final Cut Server is designed specifically for film and video production, it
automatically generates browse proxies, poster frames, and thumbnails as it catalogs
    video clips.
You can define the size and format of thumbnails for graphics files as well as the
size and format of thumbnails and proxies for video clips. In addition, you can set a
preference to have Final Cut Server generate _Apple ProRes 422 edit proxies_ at the
same time as the normal browse proxies.
Because Final Cut Server automatically associates proxies and reference images with
the original asset, you don’t have to worry about managing multiple files for your clips.
Current FCP 6.02 does not have any easy setup for "Apple ProRes 422 edit proxies".
Is this new setting for proxy other than Photo-Jpeg?
Also the following picture in same page show that MPEG-4 as Clip proxy. What is this for? Will MPEG-4 use as another editable Proxy Format or it is just Proxy for Preview?
And there was some text mentioned H.264 MPEG-4 as Proxy format too. Is this practical?
And Will H.264 can be use as Editable proxy or Preview proxy?
And Will we able to use 2 type of proxy in Final Cut Server? As Editable proxy & Preview proxy?

I think they talk about ProRes422
    a) to use it for original uncompress SD or HD Media, so it is not a realy proxy like we know from MPEG4 or Foto-JPEG (very high compressed footage), it is just a "smaller" version. That's what I suggest.
    b) to promote their codec
And I guess they just want to offer MPEG4 and H.264 as additional proxy formats which can be used also by other software than FCP for realtime editing. The most important thing is that MPEG4 and H.264 have to get uncompressed audio so you can do a realtime editing in FCP (only for hard cuts).
All the other stuff: We have to wait until we get our hands on - or have a deeper look into the manual. I had no time to do it till now...

  • Clip Proxies always Fail - move FCS to another Computer

I moved FCS to another new Mac Pro. Restore and UID conflict resolved with Terminal. Now all looks like here but when we start to Regenerate Proxies or Analyze we get the pictures (Poster Frames, Thumbnail Proxy but not the important Clip Proxy. Always FAIL, but compressor encode the File, but I can never see as a Clip Proxy. The logs shows the follow Error Message and I could not find here any answer.
    Thanks for helping me.
    ERROR: EREQERROR

    Here's the fix.
On the Final Cut Studio 3 disk 1 find the following file:
    /Volumes/Final\ Cut\ Studio\ Install/Installer/Packages/ProCoreA.pkg
this will reinstall the file you have missing and should restore the ability to regenerate proxies.

  • Download proxy files

After scanning a device , FCS has placed the proxy files on my devicde but I cannot see the indiviudal proxy files , they are all merged in a bundle file proxies.bundle . Any one who can guide me how can I download the proxy files at my desktop while are proxies are merged into one bundle file ; is there any way , pl guide

There is 2 ways you could do this. First, if you right-click (Ctrl+Click) on the Proxy.bundle and you select Show Package Content, you could browse or search for the proxy file you need.
The other way is in Final Cut Server. If you double-click on an asset to get info, you go in the resources tab and if you right-click on the Clip Proxy file and select Retreive media, you can export the proxy to the location you want.
