Clipped margins in Epson R1800 prints

My Epson R1800 clips the margins of my photos. I usually print 4x6 borderless. In the print setting, I have checked/unchecked Center Image and Scale to Fit Media with no difference. The image on the monitor is clipped so I have to compensate and allow for this with the main feature in the photo. Is there something I am missing?

Just extending on what Bruce offered... the issue is one of what is referred to as "aspect ratio" of the image.
Most digital cameras use default resolution settings that impose a 4:3 aspect ratio and you're trying to print at 3:2. Since the image is being scaled proportionately the result is as Bruce described in his reply - 'shrink-to-fit' is one dimension is going to be either too much or not enough in the other. If you intend to routinely print @ 4x6 you might check to see if your camera has a 3:2 setting (probably something like 2560x1712 pixels. (You can figure it out if necessary if you divide the smaller number by the larger one - you want to come up with .66875 rather than .75)
You can use a program like Photoshop or even iPhoto to accurately resize the images (constrain the proportion) or you can scale them to fit the 6" dimension which will leave the other a bit more than 4" (4.5" to be exact). Obviously that 1/2" will be off the page.

  • Epson R1800 prints v. dark despite many attempted fixes

i  have an epson r1800 printer which i used successfully with early  versions of PS and windows XP. now the prints are very dark with a greenish cast using both  a  macbook pro snow leaopard, and windows 7 both with ps5.
i import the pics first into LR3.
i  have been on the fone for hours with epson high-level tech support and  the best they/we can figure out is that the printer cannot handle the  photpro color setting that LR assigns automatically. it only like prints  that began as Adobe RGB 1998 and havent been re-assigned. those occassionally seem to  work fine. but some do not. i have shots in jpg tif and digitized slides [tif] going back  decades, so lots of issues included. nor is  that is an all-round solution, but is there some way i can instruct lr NOT to use the photopro profile, but  adobe rgb 98 instead.
if i go that route, my options then are importing into ps using smart  object and opening in raw one foto at a time, a pretty cumbersome [and somewhat confusing  to me] process. i do this in lr by choosing 'edit in' > 'open as  smart object' and then in ps clicking on the thumbnail in the layers  palette to open in raw. ot i can use bridge, thereby involving 3 programs. arghhh.
per epson tech instructions--and this was  the first thing that gave me some good prints--i have set the workflow  option at the bottom of the raw image in ps at:
adobe rgb 1998; 16 bit; highest mp available( 20 or 25mp even tho i am shooting at 18mp); 320 ppi. but it only works sometime.
or  am i on the wrong track completely in trying to solve the printer  problem. i have been thru many setting adjustments and nothing seemed to  work until opened with the current workflow setting. i have tried, as both adobe and epstill darkson recommeded, having ps control the color and setting icm and management off. still dark.
if agsinst all recommendations i use printer controls color, epson vivid, i can get prttey good prints, but only if i print from LR. PS hates this setting.
i am awating a call from a high-level adobe techie.
my  little head is reeling--and of course this all is after epson tried to  blame OS, PS, LR, my monitor, and me. and adobe did the same casting about. but since the same dark image is  happening with the mac laptop and windows desktop, none of these seemed  likely. epson also suggested i buy another, newer printer, but then  admitted that if the photpro profile was the problem, no joy.
any suggestions, help. i have gone thru much ink paper and hair tearing and dozens of on-line fora.

As remarked by other responders, this is not a problem unique to you, to Lightroom or to your printer; I have struggled many times, most recently with Aperture3 and an Epson1290 (my Epson 220 didn't show the problem at the same time, with the same images). Changes in driver, profile usage to names but 2 factors, all can screw things up.
    My suggestions:
    1. Make sure you have the latest drivers downloaded from the Apple Software Update window below the Apple icon at the lefthand end of your Finder menu bar.
    2. use an appropriate profile for your printer/ink/paper combination; the only real solution is to produce your own, with something like SpyderPrine - I have one for each combination I use.
    3. Select these in the Lightroom Print Menu at the right hand side of the window under "Print Job". Don't use "Draft Mode.", which doesn't allow the following choices. Underr "Color Management", put in your chosen profile and Rendering Intent (I use Perceptual, but, in my experience, they don't change things much).
When you click on "Print", an Apple print window opens, which shows the printer is not in control of printing; all the options are greyed out.
As an alternative, in the Apple Print Window, select "PDF". This will save the image as a .pdf, which you can print from Preview. In the Previerw print menu, select Color Matching/ColorSyc/Profile: and put in your chosen profile; when you get down to the Clor Management" option, coilor controls will be "off", showing that your choices will be used.
If things are working correctly, two prints, one from each route, should be identical; if they are not yoy have another proble, the basis of which I cannot imagine.

  • Epson R1800 printer options missing when using AEBS wireless printing- WHY?

I have run into a very odd problem with my Epson R1800 printer. When I install the printer for directly connecting via USB or FireWire the version 6.12 print driver appears with all of the options. When I install the same printer when connected through my AirPort extreme base station the print driver is lacking most of the adjustment features.
Fire wire and USB contain the following menu items in the drop down print dialog"
Print Settings (with basic and advanced tabs)
    Roll Paper Option
    Expansion
    Extension Settings
The AEBS printer options only contains one printer specific selection called:
    Printer Features
which has a very limited selection of options, an no options which allow me to turn off color management.
    Some additional information
    - I installed this same printer driver on one laptop back in the days of 10.5.2 and I was able to install a AEBS printer which allows all of the options. On that same computer if I now install a new printer with the same driver those extra options are missing.
    - I just upgraded a second laptop to Leopard today and went straight to 10.5.3 and the wireless driver for this printer only contains the limited menu items.
    - I am certain that I am using the Epson drivers and not the Gutenprint drivers. Please do not suggest the Gutenprint drivers, they do not handle color management properly.

This is a real problem for this printer OS combination... I believe due to the crappy Epson driver. I searched the internet and found lots and lots of people having a similar problem. When I contacted Epson today they admitted there was a driver problem, but the tech told me they had no plans to improve the driver 'because the R1800 is a discontinued model'! How's that for support!
Anyway...several people have had fairly decent luck removing the printer and all Epson software then re-installing it. When the 'correct' driver is installed it will say something like "Epson R1800 (sp) 1". My problem is there is no way to profile this printer and have the driver work as it should for proofing and color management. I know that doesn't help much, but if you google "Epson R1800 problems with Leopard" you'll see what I mean.

  • Aperture 1.5.2 + Epson R1800 Printing Problems

I love the new Aperture 1.5.2, but I'm running into a problem with Aperture stopping progress on the prints and not letting me access the epson R1800...message All jobs stopped and when I attempt to restart them, Aperture shuts them down again...
When I bring the job into Adobe Photoshop CS2 from Camera RAW it prints just fine and communicates effectively with the printer...
I love the workflow with Aperture, but cannot utilize it to print my copies and it is frustrating...Have problem solved many avenues from reloading software, printer setup utility, etc. but having the software-hardware problem between Aperture & R1800...
    Adios! Steve

    Steve --
Just realized that you have a G5 and not an Intel machine. My response below my still help -- I hope.
I use the R1800 quite extensively and have been extremely happy with the results, so hopefully this will help. When you said that you've reloaded the software, did you mean that you've tried to reinstall from the Epson disc that came with the printer? If so, do not do this. Move it to the trash if you can. I discovered this somewhat by accident when I first bought the printer -- Somewhere on Epson's site it says not to use the Epson disc for Intel Macs. Instead, download the latest driver from Epson's site for your computer and all should work just fine.
If this doesn't fix your problem there may be something wrong with your system that's a bit more serious. Others on this board can hopefully help with that.

  • Epson R1800 prints too dark with PS CS5

I have been using Photoshop since version 2.5 updating each version.
I have a trial version of PS CS5 12.0.1.  I have been trying to print from it but have been unable to get anything other than dark prints.  I have carefully checked everything, used lots of ink and paper (Epson Ultra Premium Luster).
I have downloaded and reinstalled the Epson driver (6.12) several times.  Deleting the printer and reinstating it again after the new driver is downloaded.  I'm on a Mac Pro 3GHZ, 10GB running 10.6.4.
I have re-calibrated my monitor using a Spyder3 and using the Apple calibration.  Both yield a very similar calibration.
I have carefully gone over and tried the solutions (2 and 3) offerred at:   http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/834/cpsid_83497.html
I have tested the printer using other software and the prints come out fine.
I have searched everywhere for a solution.  Is it possible to use 10.6.4 and CS5 and an R1800 to get decent prints?  CS4 worked just fine.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I have the R800 and was only able to get satisfactory results was to let the printer manage the colors as opposed to the "correct" way of PS doing it. It's a workaround at best. Luckily I have an R2400 here also. I've relegated the R800 to non-critical work.
    See here:

There doesn't appear to be a real epson driver.

  • Leopard + Aperture 2 + Epson R1800 == very dark prints

    Hi,
Before I upgraded to Leopard, I was able to get very nice prints from Aperture on my Epson R1800 printer.
After I upgraded to Leopard, the prints end up very dark. A bit of additional info follows.
    My monitor is correctly calibrated.
I installed new drivers from Epson's website (v6.12), and I verified I'm using those, and not Apple's Gutenprint drivers.
In the print settings I turn color management off, and than select correct ICC profile in the Aperture that matches paper and quality settings. For example, for printing on Epson Premium Glossy paper with PhotoRPM settings, I select "SPR1800 PrmGlsy PhotoRPM.icc" profile. Hit print, and after a bit of time the print comes out of the printer very dark. This sounds like ICC profile got dropped someplace along the way (in Aperture? in driver?).
If I go the other route, and let driver/printer manage color by selecting either normal or vivid options in print settings, and than use "system managed" setting in Aperture, the prints come out bright (maybe even a bit too bright). However, in this case the colors are off. Very off. Skin tones are especially bad with strong yellowish cast (people on the prints look if they were seriously sick).
Has anybody managed to get usable prints from Aperture 2 + Leopard combo on Epson R1800? Or any other comparable Epson printer (R800, R2400, new R1900)?
Searching forums, I found a lot of articles discussing Leopard and Epson printers problems for Adobe products (CS2/CS3/LightRoom), but not much for Aperture 2.
Unrelated question... I attempted to ask this in Aperture forum, but there was no post link. Do I need something special to be able to ask questions there?

Well, believe it or not, with the help of Epson support on the phone, I've figured this out. First of all, there is definitely a problem with Aperture's color management. What used to work (setting a color profile in the Aperture print dialog, and selecting "no color management" in the printer dialog) definitely does not work at this point.
If you want color management, what you have to do is select "System Managed" in the Aperture print dialog, and select "Color Controls - Epson Standard" in the Epson dialog. What this does is select the standard Epson profile for the paper you have selected. For example, if you've chosen Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper, the printer driver will use the "SPR1800 Premium Glossy" profile (Epson's standard profile for that paper, assuming you've downloaded it). Of course, that gives you Epson's version of what you want to print. If you have created your own profiles, using a spectrophotometer for example, you need to get the printer driver to apply YOUR profile instead of Epson's.
Here's how to apply your profile: Open Colorsync (in the Utilities folder), and select "Printers" in the Devices menu. Under the printer model, Stylus Photo R1800, for my case, select the profile for the paper you're interested in, say "SPR1800 Premium Glossy", and look on the right side of the window at "Current Profile:". Click the down arrow, and select "Other". Navigate to the profile you've created, and click "Open". This will set the profile you've created as what the printer driver will use when it thinks it's applying the SPR1800 Premium Glossy profile. Set other paper profiles (e.g., "SPR1800 Enhanced Matte") to whatever profile you've created for those papers.
Now, when you select "System Managed" in the Aperture dialog, and "Color Controls - Epson Standard" in the Epson dialog, it will apply your own profile.
Hopefully, Apple will fix the problem with color management, and we'll be able to go back to color management as it was before. In the meantime, this is the only work-around I've found.

  • Epson r1800 won't print

I have recently changed to imac from pc. My epson r1800 printer was working perfectly but when switched to mac I no longer had access to the full list of printing options, including paper type, so downloaded latest epson drivers. now cannot print at all- printing is "stopped" due to filter error. Does anyone know how to fix this?

  • Epson R1800 - installing printer driver ??

I have a MacBook (10.4.7) connected to an Epson R1800 printer via USB. Prior to upgrading to 10.4.8, the printer worked fine. However, OSX 10.4.8 proved to be a catastrophe and I had to revert to 10.4.5 and then upgrade progressively to 10.4.7 (repairing privileges and rebooting at every step of the way).
I installed the new Intel version of the R1800 driver downloaded from Epson, but the driver does not appear on the MacBook, even after repairing privileges. I cannot see the driver in the printer setup utility.
I am having to create PDF versions of my work, transfer them to an ageing G4 (also under 10.4.7) in order to print - no problem with printer drivers on the G4.
My suspicion is that the delta 10.4.8 upgrade is at the origin of the problem. I had the dead, grey "kernel problem" screen like many many other people. I have never had an upgrade problem before. This upgrade was downloaded automatically via software upgrade with no warning that it could cause big, big problems...
Any help you can give would be very much appreciated.
    MacBookPro + G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Corporate communication/design
    MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I found the solution! When installing the Epson printer driver, there is a drop-down menu "install/uninstall". Select "uninstall" to remove all trace of any Epson R1800 printer-related files on the disk. Then reinstall the driver. After that, there is no problem selecting the printer.
Sounds obvious, but in the heat of the moment, the obvious is not always that clear!

  • Epson R1800 Missing Utility

I'm thinking this is more an Epson issue, than Apple, but...
We recently installed the new Time Capsule to do our backups, and act as a print server for multiple macs on our home network... It appears that once we plugged the Epson R1800 printer into the Time Capsule, the printer utility software no longer sees the printer, and has been rendered useless.. I've seen a couple discussions where in order for the utility to work, the printer must be plugged directly into the computer USB port... but these discussions were dated last November...
Does anyone know if this issue has been resolved by Epson, or is this something I'll have to deal with?
Also, if we were to upgrade to a printer that has an ethernet port instead of a USB port, will the printer utility work when plugged into the time capsule?
    thanks!

You can try installing 10.5.4 and the new AirPort upgrade to 7.3.2. Be warned that some users have experienced problems after upgrading. My Samsung printer didn't work with via Time Capsule until 10.5.3.

  • Epson r2400 printing margins

I am trying to print cards on Strathmore paper with an Epson r2400. The size is 6 7/8" x 10". I keep getting a big left and top margin.
BTW: Aperture insists in cropping that the geometry is 6.9 x 10, and insists in the print dialog that it is 7x10 ".
I have tried printing the calibration page, but it prints with a 1/8" margin on the left and top, making the numbers useless. I have tried to guess at what the calibration (using 40 for right and 24 for bottom) but nothing seems to work.
Can anyone explain to me what calibration is supposed to do, since it doesn't seem to have any effect. And just what do those calibration numbers mean, anyway?
Until I figure it out, it's back to Photoshop for printing....
    mahalo,
    paul

    Paul,
Did you actually get the Epson r2400 to print on 7x10 stock? I have scored 7x10 stock, for folded 5x7 cards (Moab Entrada; really nice paper!). I had no problem working with this paper & printer combination (actually, my printer is the Epson R1800) in PC land, but when I define a 7x10 custom paper size on my new Mac, it doesn't seem to stick. Mac lets me define it, but when I send the print job to the printer, it bombs and I get a message that media is loaded incorrectly. This has happened from Aperture, and from Print Explosion.
    Any clues?

  • Wireless print server that works with Macs and Epson R1800?

    Hi,
I'm looking to buy a wireless print server, which I could use as if the printer was connected directly to my Mac. So basically, it just needs to have printing over IP port (like port 9100 on HP JetDirect) and drivers for Mac OS X (or ideally, no special drivers needed at all). Devices that do sharing of the printer only over LPD (older Unix), SMB (Windows), IPP (Cups / newer Unix) or similar protocols is not what I'm looking for here.
The reason why LPD, SMB and IPP are not an option is that I'll need utilities such as Epson Printer Utility to work over the network too.
It looks like Linksys, Belkin and some other have products that allow access to the printer over port 9100 (standard HP JetDiret's port) as if the printer was connected directly to the computer. However, for the most part I was able to find only success stories for Windows users.
Windows has standard driver that allows connection to the printer to be easily switched from USB port to network port. Does OS X comes standard with that feature, or is the special driver needed?
Most importantly, has anybody had success with printing from Mac through wireless print server (any brand) to Epson R1800? Did the Epson Print Utility (checking the ink levels, checking and cleaning the head, etc) work? Any special drivers needed?
    Thanks

direwolf has hit the nail on the head - the Epson driver won't work for IP printing. The Epson driver is a Carbon driver, where they build the comm protocols into the driver instead of enabling use of the standard protocols on OS X (that are part of the CUPS system). You'll need a CUPS driver to use the standard network protocol(s). The printfab driver is a CUPS driver.
Exception - the Apple Extreme/Express/etc print servers have firmware that make them work like Macs - Mac-to-Mac sharing works with USB-only drivers! I hesitate to recommend the Extreme/Express, because Apple can't seem to get all the kinks out.
