Clipped screen on dual screen+compiz+nvidia

Hello everybody,
I am connecting an external display to my laptop. The laptop display is 1280x800, while the external display is 1280x1024.
NVIDIA is configured to run two separate Xscreens, opposed to the TwinView alternative.
Compiz works on either screens without slowdowns, but the lower area of the external display is black.
It seems that Compiz is running on each screen at 1280x800, and since the external display is larger, a black band is shown at the bottom. How do I configure Compiz to use the full resolution on the external display?
Metacity isn't affected by this issue.
Did you ever experience that? There's not much on Google about that (or too much, searching for compiz+nvidia+dual screen gives too much results )
Forgot to say: this applies to Compiz 0.7.8 and Compiz 0.8.0 upgraded today. Affects Ubuntu and Arch either using NVIDIA 177.x or 180.x.
Cheers,
eaZy

I still haven't found a solution, but I managed to work with Compiz on the main screen (in my case the laptop) and Metacity on the other screen...
I'm starting compiz with
DISPLAY=:0.0 compiz --replace --only-current-screen
and metacity with
DISPLAY=:0.1 metacity --replace
This is working, apart of small focus bugs: changing from an active window on a screen to an active window to another screen is impossible, the only solution is clicking on a unfocused object and returning the focus to the target window.
That's actually the work around I was looking for! Thanks a lot. I'm using a 26" tv as the secondary display and compiz is kind of pointless on that, at least to me. For some odd reason I've also noticed that when I set the larger display to a resolution lower than the main display (the laptop lcd), there is no bar with compiz. I don't know how solid this is because after a few restarts it went back to the intended resolution, but since doing the same step again it's been working for now.

But it gives a black screen. Also when I blacklist the i915 driver or force only the nvidia driver to be loaded in xorg.conf
Any ideas? Help is greatly appreciated

First of all, the current stable driver from the repos is newer than what you have installed (349). Arch is quick on the uptake with new software versions, there's seldom a need to go into AUR if what you need is the latest driver.
Second, your notebook is likely using optimus, so you should be using Bumblebee and read through this article to find out how to set it up: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee

Late 2006, 24" iMac, 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Screen Tearing, nVidia GeForce 7300 GT
I've been suffering with screen tearing, strange screen artifacts, etc. followed by totally unresponsive freezing machine. This problem has been happening to varying degrees for about 9 months.
Initially, I was able to mitigate the problem with smcFanControl. Adjusting the fan speeds up helped keep the machine cool and prevent most of the problems. Recently, we had a spell of hot weather and the fans just couldn't keep up. If you're using smcFanControl, the only fan speed that will really make a difference is the CPU. The HDD and ODD fans are no where near where you need to be.
Also, I noticed the machine was LOADED with dust when I took it apart, including the heat sink fins for the graphics card. If you have time you may want to try a thorough cleaning with compressed air before replacing the card. You just need to get through step 11 below to access what needs to be cleaned.
Based on reading here and elsewhere, I decided to replace the graphics card. To give back to the community, I wanted to layout the procedure here.
    Where to buy the card.
I had a tough time finding the right card. I did exhaustive web searches using every combination of Nvidia 7300 GT, etc. You really need to search by the Apple part number. The Apple part number for the 7300 is 661-4179, for the 7600 is 661-4180. I found it at We Love Macs and at dv warehouse. I paid $248 for the 7600 card. BE CAREFUL buying a "refurbished" card. At We Love Macs, "refurbished" means "pulled from a working machine." Could be a machine with as much mileage as yours and prone to the same failures as yours.
The card is an MXM style card (generally used in laptops), with a giant heat sink and heat pipe assembly. The card can be separated from the heat assembly. If I had time, I would have tried a generic, cheaper, MXM style card.
    Dispelling some myths.
People here and elsewhere have said that no Intel iMac graphics card can be replaced, that they're wedded to the logic board. The one on this model can be replaced, I've done it. Also, some have said you can't put a 256MB, 7600 GT in a machine that originally had a 128MB, 7300 GT. Also, not true. That's what I did to my machine and it is working fine.
So here's the step-by-step on my take apart and replacement. This is just one user helping out others, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. This takes about 1 1/2 hours to take apart and 2 to put back together.
    1) Install the iStat widget and monitor the temperatures for a few days and record the temperatures (to be able to verify that you've completed the repair correctly later)
    2) Make a complete backup of any internal drives and make sure the backup will be bootable (use Carbon Copy Cloner)
    3) Use static safeguards, like an anti-static wrist strap.
    4) Get a pen a stack of paper envelopes to separate and label the pieces you remove.
    5) You'll need a #2 Phillips and #6, 8, 10 Torx. Most of the screws at T-8. There are 8 T-8s holding in the LCD. They are about 1 1/4" down. You'll need a long, skinny T-8 to get to them.
    6) Unplug the machine and place it on it's back on a large white sheet of paper.
    7) Remove RAM door, #2 Phillips x 2.
    8) Remove RAM.
    9) Remove 4 T-8s along bottom.
    10) Remove large rectangular plastic bezel surrounding the whole machine, tilt up being careful not to stress iSight cables. You'll need to stretch it around the RAM ejection tabs.
    11) Detach two iSight cables.
    12) Peel up black stickers at lower corners of speakers.
    13) Remove LCD screws, T-8 x 8. You'll probably drop a few, they're pretty easy to retrieve.
    14) Remove two retaining screws on right hand LCD cable. T-6 x2 Unplug cable.
    15) Remove LCD inverter cable, left.
Start unplugging everything connected to the logic board.
    16) Unplug cable coming from right speaker. Note cable routing, it is the only one that's a little tricky. Also, note that the left one plugs in on the right and the right one plugs in on the left.
    17) Remove right speaker. T-10 Note: left and right speaker screws are different lengths.
    18) Unplug ODD blower cable.
    19) Unplug ODD temp cable and lift up tape.
    20) Unplug HDD blower cable.
    21) Unplug the HDD temp cable.
    22) Unplug the camera & mic cable.
    23) Unscrew the clamp securing the airport card (has two antenna cables going to it, labeled PCIE), T-6 x 2
    24) Unplug SATA cable.
    25) Unplug Power cable, thick black plastic harness, socket.
    26) Unplug ambient temp cable.
    27) Unscrew the bluetooth card, T-6 x2.
    28) Unplug CPU blower cable.
    29) Unplug power button cable, 2 conductor, tiny cable, bottom left.
    30) Unscrew left speaker, T-10, unplug from logic board, but just leave dangling, no need to remove cable completely.
    31) Remove logic board screws. Be careful to segregate them, they have different lengths and different thread pitches and thread types. Some are machine threads going into metal, some are coarse threads going into plastic.
    31a) Heat sink frame to case T-8 x 2
    31b) Logic board to case T-8 x 3
31c) Screws at heat sink from arrows T-8 x 3
31d) Logic board at bottom near RAM slot T-8 x 2
    32) Unplug ODD ribbon cable, be extremely careful. Release plastic tabs on each side to remove. Be sure it is fully and evenly seated when you put it back later.
    33) Remove logic board with attached graphics card.
    34) Unplug graphics card heat sink sensor cable at logic board end.
    35) Remove graphics card screws 2 x T-6
    36) Remove single screw from small L-bracket on heat sink 1 x T-6
    Replace graphics card.
Reverse steps, put everything back together. Be careful not to pinch any cables when you put the logic board back in. When you put the LCD back in, if you can't get the screws to stick to the driver, use some glue stick from your kid's art supplies.
Test everything. You've disconnected every cable in the system.
I torture tested the machine with a space heater on it, 5 different videos of different formats playing at the same time. No problems.
I took a lot of pictures inside the machine. As soon as I figure out a good place to post them, I'll try to add a link here.
    Good luck

    Greetings!
I know this is in response to your post from over 2 years ago, but I was searching on Apple's site for the max RAM I can upgrade our refurbed iMac too and it brought up this post.
Oddly enough, I've been experiencing the same screen issues and locking up on our iMac as well. I was concerned it was a bad memory module, but now I'm thinking it's the same issue you found.
Because I bought this some 2+ years ago refurbed from Apple, I'm not surprised that could be the actual problem.
I've pulled this thing apart once to replace the hard-drive which crashed about a year ago, so I'm not totally new at opening it up, but this process you mention sounds pretty intense...just wanted to get your second take on it based on what I've done thus far.
Thanks again for posting this...it was an eye-opener as to what might actually be causing our issues with our trusted Mac!

  • Dual-head on NVIDIA

Hello, I'm trying to configure a dual-head setup (NVIDIA proprietary drivers). I've tried both Xinerama and Twinview, but the screen is always treated as one big virtual screen and window managers spread fullscreen windows over both monitors.
Here's what I've tried (they all resulted in the above):
    - # nvidia-xconfig
    - These instructions
    - # nvidia-xsettings
    - These instructions (I might've misunderstood them, they were fairly vague)
In addition, Xinerama seems to disable the randr extension, which makes me unable to use xrandr or arandr, so the preferred option is to use Twinview.
For clearance, when I open arandr, I see one big, wide screen called default. How do I set it up so that it shows 2 different screens?

Separate X sessions on dual screens (both monitors have own x sessions )
    no xrandr

  • Can I run CC on Intel Pentium G2030 3.00GHz dual core. NVIDIA Geforce GT610 1GB graphics. Viglen Vig642M Motherboard?

Can I run CC on Intel Pentium G2030 3.00GHz dual core. NVIDIA Geforce GT610 1GB graphics. Viglen Vig642M Motherboard?
I also have 8GB RAM DDR3, 1TB HDD, Its on Windows 7, is that a problem with the allocated graphics card?
    P

    Thanks John,
I've done this, but couldn't gather clear information about whether the graphics card was suitable for Premiere CC? Using CPUbenchmark it seemed to me like it would be suitable. Its unlikely we would use After Effects CC but would be handy if it would work.
Also the G2030 dual core? Can you recommend how I find out if this would work, as the site states the requirement to be a Dual Core2... does this mean the software (Premiere CC, Photoshop CC, Indesign CC etc) would not work at all?
    Any guidance helpful.

  • Xorg cannot find screens with nvidia module

I know that this question is very common, but I cannot find solution,
I should use "nvidia" drivers on Lenovo notebook with two videocards (work with Cuda technology).
Xorg cannot load nvidia module with this xorg.conf. Can anybody help?
    Thanks.

I don't see any messages of loading nvidia ("NVRM") or nouveau. Are you sure that you have installed a module that is compatible with your current kernel?
You'll also need to patch your ACPI handle or the nouveau/nvidia driver will refuse to load at all, see https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/bbswitch/issues/2 (this is specific to some machines, your Lenovo G580 machine included)

  • [Solved] Startx black screen on nvidia macbook

startx goes to a black screen, Xorg.0.log doesn't report anything unusual (that I noticed). I've been using arch for a few years, but this is my first install on a mac, and my knowledge is rather thin in places, so I apologize if I'm missing something obvious. any help would be appreciated. here's my log. I have nvidia graphics

  • Black screen. NVIDIA 8600M. Dispute with local repair service.

    Hello,
I'm looking for help, presumably for a situation with bad nVidia chip descried in article TS2377. If any Apple technicians are here it would be great!
My local service provider privately told me that the main Russian service (where all local services send their requests for spare parts) rejects requests that may be a subject for TS2377 case, ignoring Apple post guarantee replacement for 4 years.
I have a "Carry-In Detail" paper from Moscow with my Diagnostic Code NVQ-7697e80a-02
You can download it here: http://www.zinov.com/static/details.pdf
Any information about what this code means is welcome.
In fact, the system is working well and all hardware components are working too, except for broken video that now is visible through Screen Sharing feature like "Intel GMA".
    I'll appreciate any help.

"If any Apple technicians are here it would be great!"
These are user-to-user forums where everyday folk post questions and offer answers to each other.
If you are having issues w/an AASP or an Apple Store either take the matter up w/the manager of the store or Customer Relations. Sorry, I do not know the Russian phone # for CR but if you call you call your country's Apple tech support, ask to be transferred to the Customer Relation department. Present your case to them. They will be able to cut through all the red tape.
    Good luck!

    Hi
As far as I know the Tecra M5 was delivered either with the Intel or nVidia graphic card.
On the notebooks with nVidia graphic card you can set different option in the nVidia Desktop manager; for example Enable multiple desktops
You should find it in control panel.
Unfortunately, I dont know exactly where the settings are placed in the nVidia manager because this notebook was delivered only with WinXP but Im sure you will find it.

  • BROKEN SCREEN "CLIP" SCREEN NOT VISIBLE

I have just been given a Portege 7200 series with docking station. The clip which fastens the screen to the main unit is broken and the screen doesn't seem to work. Whilst I can cope with the broken clip, I wondered if this is affecting why the screen isn't working? I can only see a very very dim image. Obviously I use an external screen but wondered if there was anything I could do to make the laptop screen work again. Thanks for any help.

    Hi
I am pretty sure that some hardware component is defect. It can be FL inverter or something like that. In my opinion you should contact Service Partner and let them exchange it. Portege 7200 is very nice notebook.
In my opinion it is worthwhile to change it.

  • CS6 on W8, black screen on nvidia drivers 310.70 (gtx 690)

Have to roll back to 306 to get screen back!

I was able to get MPE (Premiere 6.0.3) running perfectly with my GTX 690 (310.90 driver) by going into the:
    • NVIDIA control panel
    • Manage 3D setting
    • Find Premiere in the "program settings" tab
    • Change "CUDA" to either of the GPUs (not both)
    • Change "Multi-GPU Rendering" to single GPU
    • Change "Multi-Display/Mixed GPU acceleration" to single display performance
    • Save changes and hope for the best!
    Hope that helps!
(Edit: the reason that 680s won't work in SLI is because Premiere won't/can't use two GPUs - After Effects will, so hopefully Adobe will update this soon)

  • GTX 660M black screen with Nvidia driver, maybe a BIOS problem

    Hello Svet,
I need help with this please, if it is indeed a BIOS problem:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=254620.0
My laptop uses the Aptio Setup Utility Version 2.10.1208
    BIOS Version: E16F2IMT.300
    BIOS Build: 05/31/2011
    EC Version 16F2EG61 Ver4.22
    EC Build 04/21/2011
I found a new BIOS for it following the link from the Power Pro official site, but I have no idea if it would do the job.
    http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GT683.html#down-driver
    This is my laptop:
    PowerPro R 11:36-560
    MSI 937-16F231-004
If you can help me, I will gladly donate.
    Thank you,
    Fox

Ok, from you're answer I understand that  flashing the GPU with a compatible vBIOS is either not a solution for the problem,
yes don't think that can help for this case
and also will be high risky to brick your card
and even if its not bricked[survive flashing] don't think that can change anything
eventually you can try flashing your system notebook BIOS to the latest version for your notebook,
to check if that can helps by chance.
For it you have to ask your notebook vendor [power notebooks]
to provide you with the latest BIOS for your NB
rather than this don't think any modded stuffs can help with this.

  • Dual monitors on nvidia geforce fx 5200

    Hi,
I'm using a nvidia geforce fx 5200 card that has vga out, dvi out, and svideo out. I have one crt hooked into the vga, the main monitor, and I have a dvi to vga converter, to enable a second vga, crt monitor. When I try to use the nvidia-settings, and enable twinview,  and I get this message:
    "failed to set metamode (1) 'CRT00: nvidia-auto-select @1024x768 + 1024+0, DFP-0: 1024x768 @1024x768 +0+0' (Mode 2048x768, id: 50) on X screen 0."
    any ideas? thanks.

Hm, Not working, just display on the true vga monitor. Are you using a dvi to vga connector as well? Heres my log output, I couldn't make too much of it, I tried to switch the CRT-1 to DFP-0 which didn't seem to do the trick either.

  • Problem compiz/nvidia/antialiasing?

    Hi,
I have a problem : I think that I don't have the antialiasing, or the "refreshment" of the screen is sometimes very slow...
When I move a window I can see the window in two part... Then sometimes when I watch a movie I can see some "lines" on the screen, like a slow refreshment.
    I took a screenshot :
My config : 9600M GT with the last nvidia drivers // core 2 duo // 4g ram
    Thanks!

    Option "BackingStore"?

  • Dual 23'' with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT

I want to know if I can drive 2 23" inch displays on a Mac Pro 8 core with the stock NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT at full resolution or do I need to get a second card. My monitors are not the new ones with the aluminum finish, they are a generation or two behind, they are the ones that have the white plastic frame.
    Thanks

The card can drive two monitors. Only one can be 30". The two 23" will be fine, but you will need two DVI to ADC adapters if they are ADC (Apple Display Connector) models.
