Clipping Indicator Strangeness Back Again ???

Since updating to the latest version of ACR 8.7.1 an anomaly with the black clipping indicator has returned. Example, open an image in ACR make a slight adjustment to exposure and highlights, now make open up the shadows, and the black clipping indicator magically appears or if the indicator showed clipped shadows the clipping indicator increases. Should it either remain the same or at least slightly reduce the clipped areas?  Adjusting the Blacks to reduce the clipping works, but should the clipping indicators be accurate. Happens at all levels of zoom within ACR.
I know Eric worked on the earlier problem that was resolved - was an issue where a dark area was adjacent to a very bright area.

You need to put the peak-to-peak indicator outside the case structure so it gets updated every loop iteration. To retain the values for iteration that currently don't update the indicator, use a second shift register across the while loop which also goes throught the case structure.
In the TRUE case, the result of the division is wired to it's output tunnel. In the FALSE case, the output of the left shift register is simply wired across the case structure, retaining the old value. From the indicator, the wire continues to the new shift register on the right.

  • Clipping indicator wont turn off

Okay, so I recently updated to ACR 6.7.
Since then everytime I open an image there are clipping indicators that won't turn off.
I know about the usual highlight and shadow indicators (pressing "o" and "u" respectively) and when i turn these on the other stuff disappears but if I turn these off then I get what I can only describe as less dramatic clipping indicators i.e. they are not just red but varying shades of purple and green.
Any ideas what these are? Will try post some screenshots if needed.

Had the opportunity to delve into the highlight clipping issue, and found another interesting anomoly. With ACR set to 100% to eliminate any display issues you can see in the first image the highlight clipping indicator with all the controls set to zero; which is what I would expect to see, and the highlights while hot, not too hot and moving the highlight control to the left as seen in the second image, the highligh clipping indicator is off with the highlight control set at -45 again with all the other controls set to zero
The second image shows no highlight clipping...
Now still reducing the highlight contol to -85 with all the other controls set to zero; and guess what? The highlight clipping indicator turned back on, not expected behavior.
So while we have an anomoly with the indicator, do we also have a problem with the highlight control itself?
I checked with the color picker and the highlight values with the control set at -45 showed R=254 G=254 B=254 not quite pure white, but still a blown highlight, but with the control set at -85 the RGB values increased to R=255 G=255 and B=255 which is pure white. At -45 there were some values lower than 254 but those increased to pure white wheras I would have thought they would have reduced in value as you further move the highlight control to the left
Not sure if this will help Eric and team, but a few more datapoints.....

    Hi Guys,
I have an interesting article on FCP X by Rick Young. Real world experiences.

A very interesting article Ken, especially the comments about compound clips within compound clips.
I've never experienced the horrific problems some folk have claimed but then I never put compound clips within compound clips.
In  fact, until today I had never made a compound clip!

  • ACR 7.3 Highlight Clipping Indicator

Just updated to the release version of ACR 7.3 and notice some weirdness with the highlight clipping indicator.
The file is from a Nikon D3 set at ISO 3200 with Nikon 24-70 f2.8 (shot at f3.2)
Open the file and all looks OK (it's noisy but what do you expect at ISO 3200). Set enable lens correction and the highlight indicator shows clipping with all other controls set to zero. OK I thought, lens correction is correcting for fall-off at the edges of the frame. Now go to the adjustments panel and just move the highlight conntrol to the left, you would think that the clipping would be reduced or maybe even eliminated - no the highligh clipped area increases in size. Zoomed in to 100% to see if it was a display anomoly, and no the clipping stays the same. The reverse of the shadow clipping I reported back in June.
Would have thought that moving the highlight slider to such an extreme value would have reduced the clipped area not make it grow.......
    Here are some screen shots:
    Image as opened in ACR
    Now with lens adjustment applied
Now with highlight slider set to -85 (all other controls at zero)
    Highlight at -85 100% Zoom
Update - something is not right with the displays with this latest version of ACR, opening up the shadows on the same image and the highlight clipping indicators actually show them decreasing
Another Update: These shots were taken in mixed lighting, colored gels adding to the mood of the icerink that were periodically changing color, ranging from Blue, Green, Red and combinations. Using the white balance picker on the white background the highlight clipped areas went away, but changing the color balance destroyed the mood of the scene as negated the color lighting effect. But should a change in color balance effect the highlight clipping so dramatically? Basically it looks like the highlight clipping indicator is being effected by contrast rather than the actual highlight values?

We were discussing this in another thread several months ago
So, under certain conditions and when some camera profiles are used (both Nikon and Canon), it can happen that trying to reduce clipped area with sliders actually increases that area. It's caused by the profile as made by the factory (Nikon, Canon) and isn't ACR issue. I think I also posted a graphical representation of one profile showing why it happens. If not, I can post it
The fact is - sRGB / Adobe RGB gamut is smaller than gamut of raw image, so some colors are clipped even if they are not clipped in raw color space, sometimes in slightly unexpected way. However, if Adobe standard profile is used, clipping is performed according to ACR workflow which also has some drawbacks, which we also discussed in another thread on raw image from Olympus camera, several months ago
Showing area with RGB 170,165,180 as clipped is unexpected - can you post the sample ?

  • Bug: Why does PP Conform and reconform same video clips over and over again?

Any time I click out of PP and then come back to the program from ANYWHERE (even the desktop), PP starts to conform my files.
For example, I have a very simple test project open with four 5-minute clips in it. All the files have done their "conforming." But I click outside of PP and then immediately click back inside and it starts conforming one or more of the files that it had already previously conformed. This happens every other time I click out of PP.
Shouldn't a file that has already been conformed need to go through that just one time in a project?
I'm thinking that my bug has something to do with this now since things go crazy slow while conforming. It has always done this with larger projects, but I thought it was clips that hadn't been conformed before. Now that I only have a few clips to keep my eye on, I see it is conforming and reconforming the same clips over and over again every time I come back to PP.
Here's a screencast video of the problem.  You can see it reconforms the same files over and over again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFrXk4nTpwo

I'll describe what happens first, as it makes the explanations of the failure cases a little more clear.
PPro generates two potential sidecar files for audio - PEK and CFA files.  The PEK file is simply a quick data pass of the audio data that allows the app to draw waveforms (ie it should be pretty quick) - the CFA files are required if the file source is either too slow to decode the audio in realtime (like some MPEG long GOP, for instance), or if there's a mismatch in the sample rate depth.  The idea is that the conform files will match your sequence's audio bitrate settings so that the app can play & mix audio in realtime.
How does PPro track these additional files?  Every file that is imported is stamped with XMP, which is how we handle metadata on source files.  XMP creates a unique ID which the app uses as a lookup value when it wants to find the PEK & CFA files that it generated for a file.  So, usually, if you have a project where certain clips constantly reconform, it has something to do with XMP.  Why? Usually it's because XMP can't write to the file.  So, every time you launch PPro and open the same project, the media file has no XMP data, so it tries to generate a new ID, so any old CFA/PEK files have an ID mismatch and the app thinks it needs to generate new ones.
Typical cases why XMP can't stamp files:
    - the media file is read-only.
    - the media's hard drive is read-only.
    - the file itself is corrupted/malformed, and XMP takes the safe route & decides not to try to write any additional data to the file.  (I've personally witnessed this occur with WAV files captured by a Tascam field recorder.)
    - someone deleted the XMP files by hand (certain media types have it as a sidecar .XMP file instead of embedded).  (Don't laugh - I recently encountered a case where people had instituted a server folder rule to delete all files on a network share that weren't .mpg. )
    A workaround you can try:
There's a preference setting to turn off injecting XMP into your media.  If that setting is in effect, PPro will not rely on the XMP ID for the CFA/PEK files.
One other note, if your problem is specific to MPEG files:  it might be that PPro isn't able to index the file properly.  If it can't index, it might be trying to re-index on each launch;  audio conforming always triggers after indexing.   So watch for it constantly indexing - if that's the case, all the XMP stuff I described above has nothing to do with the problem.  It's a side effect of something in the MPEG stream that we're barfing on.  If you do see it constantly re-indexing MPEG files, it would be really helpful to send in a sample so that we can examine the stream.

    Hello jared1915
If you are stuck in that loop, the next step would be to restore your iPhone. Check out the article below to get your iPhone into recovery-mode and restore it in iTunes.

  • BT Infinity Dartford pushed back AGAIN!

So this is my first time posting on the forum, but i feel i need to say this because its starting to get stupid. Back in June 2010 BT said i was going to be able to get BT Infinity 1 (40MB down | 2MB up). Well that never happened and the dates have been pushed back again to September 30th 2014 .
The only reason we switched to BT was to get Fibre Optic broadband as soon as it was available. That day never came and we are really starting to get fed up with the dates being pushed back, its almost been 4 years since BT first announced our cabinet was going to be upgraded but as of now it has not.
Our current connection is 1.9 Mbps down and 0.3 Mbps, and is not enough when two people are trying to play games on steam and the other two are watching YouTube videos. It is just such a pain that the fibre dates come and go as if no one is actually doing anything about it.
Even if my cabinet is not going to be upgraded anytime soon i would at least like an answer to the reasons why, according to openreach "We are in ongoing discussion with the relevant authority about the location of this cabinet." They have not said anything else apart from that for the past 2 years, no new information has been given.
What makes it worse, there is someone less then 100 ft from my house with a BT Infinity connection.
Is there anyone who can give me a bit more information that Openreach are giving me?
I am currently connected to cabinet P13 which is linked to the Dartford exchange.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Up until recently you could email Openreach and ask when your cabinet was likely to be upgraded however Openreach are no longer giving out that information, instead they are replying:-
Thank you for your contact to us. Please note that we will not be responding to you by email but, would like to point you to the Openreach Superfast Fibre website and the FAQ section that will provide answers to the most commonly asked questions. It will also provide links to those service providers that sell fibre broadband at the moment so you can check if your particular line is enabled.
    http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/
So in short, you just need to keep checking to see if your cabinet has been up graded.
If you use this checker it will tell what cabinet you are on and what services it can receive

I also found this which may be for your area.

  • I have Yahoo mail provider but just lost my folders in Mac Mail program. The folders were not "On my Mac" but on "Yahoo". How do I get them back again?

I have Yahoo mail provider but just lost my folders in Mac Mail program. The folders were not "On my Mac" but on "Yahoo". How do I get them back again? I have reinstalled MacMail as everything had disappeared. The new install has given me everything except the Yahoo folders. When I looked one of the folders had reappeared, but now it has gone again. I am using Yosemite.
Desperate to find those folders with so much data involved.

Thanks for that babowa. If I add my Yahoo account it just goes straight to MacMail and says I already have an account. There seems to be no basic problem with mails going between Macmail and Yahoo. It is just the folders that have disappeared, while MacMail was out of action. I don't think those particular folders were ever on the Yahoo mail that I access through BT, they were just on the MacMail under "Yahoo" as opposed to "On my Mac". I am worried in case I lose what I already have if I press "Restore" from my back up. As you can see, I am not exactly good at this!

Also where exactly on the laptop is teh data stored.
    Thank you!!

go to 'Edit' in the menu bar. Then choose 'Preferences'.
you'll see a pop-up and there's a tab called 'Devices' there. If you click that, you will be able to check a box that says 'prevent automatic syncing for iPods, iPads and iPhones' or something like that.
    Hope this helps
NB: if you don't even see the menu bar that has options like 'File, Edit, View, etc', first click the black/white square button on the top left of your screen, and then click 'show menu bar'. It should pop right up.
    Good luck

  • Photoshop CS6 is not responding when leaving PS and coming back again

A weired problem: My new installation of Photoshop CS6 (OS X Mavericks on a new MBP) is not responding when leaving PS and coming back again.
Example: i open a new file in PS - then i click on the desktop - when i go back to PS again, it is not responding to any click on any window (except for the menu bar).
I can solve the problem when i try going back several times or when i go back to PS via the icon in the dock.
But it is still very annoying in a quick workflow.
I would appreciate any idea what i can check more, cause i tried everything and i can’t find this issue on the web…
    Thanks…

Problem solved… The troublemaker was the Trackball Works Driver for Kensington trackballs / Expert Mouses…
I’m now using a generic driver for USB devices and everything is fine.

  • Putting music & playlists back again

    Hi folks,
I'm just about to run iVolume on my iTunes library in order to normalise the volume of the music I have. It doesn't work on the iPod files, but interfaces with the iTunes library itself. So, I will have to rip out the music and playlists on my iPod, only to drag and drop them back again (I manually manage syncing my music). That way, the music on my iPod will playback at the new normalised volume.
So, rather than try to commit it to memory (or indeed print reams of paper) before selecting around 5GB of eclectic choice and dragging and dropping it back (over USB 1.1!), can anybody suggest an easier way please?
    Thanks,
