Clipping Mask - No outlines

Hey guys,
Hopfeully this will only be a simple question for you.
I tried to create a moleskine sketch pad in Illustrator CS4. I imported a texture, pathed the outlines from a picture, created a clipping mask, lowered opacity and set a gradient to create a shadow between the two pages.
In the Moment i've set the outlines to 0,5pt but i would like to apply a brush so it will be more "sketchy", like drawed by hand.
Unfortunately, I am not able to apply a brush to it. Anyone has a clue why and a solution?
Thank you
Max

Not to be disrespectful or judgemental here, that's not my aim here, I just wanted to point out to Mylenium that I believe what you told Polo wasn't very helpful at all...it seems like you just told him that there's no way to do what he wants and to just accept it.  That's not how true design works.  If there isn't a way to do what you want to do conventionally, a TRUE designer would figure out a work-around, kind of like the response I gave him.  My method may not be EXACTLY what he needs as a solution, but it's something!  I've only been designing for 5 years, but I've learned in those short 5 years, the moment you say you can't do something and you should just accept it - you're looking for a new job...the last thing I would(as a 'community professional')want to do is tell people with your reputation to essentially "suck it up, Nancy, you're just gonna have to live with it"
Again, just my opinion, no disrespect - I've looked at many of your other responses in other threads - you know what you're talking about, I just feel in this case you COULD have given him a direction to go in.

  • Clipping mask eliminates outline

    I watched the instructional video to place a photo into a clipping mask (as opposed to placing a photograph within an object in Freehand). In all cases, the outline of the clipping mask disappears or is eliminated. Is there a way to retain the outline (in my case, a 1pt. black rule) when the mask is created so that I don't have to add the black color to the outline again, afterward?
    Thank you,
    Al

    In CS5, you can:
    1. Select the path that you want to use for the clipping path.
    2. Click the Drawing Mode button and put the program in Draw Inside Mode.
    3. File>Place the image.

  • Why does the clipping mask add a thin outline?

    I'm making a realistic looking customizer (similar to NikeiD and Reebok YOUR). I used the pen tool and pathfinder to make each zone (shape). After I made all the zones I used the clipping mask on every zone to include the photo of the pad so the colored zone looks realistic.
    However, once I make the clipping mask on all the zones, about a 1px gap appears between all the zones. How do I fix this so there is no gap between the zones (fyi: I used the divide and trim pathfinder tool so there is no space between the zones in outline view)?
    PS: I'm aware that I can turn off anti-aliasing in the preferences, but that doesn't slove the problem for web, only print.
    Below is an example of what I'm talking about.
    I hope someone can help me with this annoying issue. Thank you

    Unfortunately, that didn't work. There are still gaps between the zones (PNG files).

  • I have a line (stroke, no fill) and an eps graphic. I'm trying to make a clipping mask of the single line art but all it does is cut the eps graphic instead of making a mask?

    I have an eps graphic and a single line drawing 2 pt wt. I'm trying to make a clipping mask of the line drawing. When I tried it all that happened was the eps graphic was cut in half. I did the exact steps from AdobeTV except the line drawing [pink camera.ai*@1200% (CMYK/Outline)] is an ai pen line drawing instead of a vector graphic and the other is [vector flower lillies.eps @ 100% (RGB/Preview)]. If you need more info on the graphics please tell me where to find it and I will send it.
    This is all because the eps graphic has a white background. I have tried everything I know including opening it in Photoshop and deleting the background and it always pastes with a white background. My thought was if I can't change the background then maybe I can make a clipping mask of the pink camera and just paste it in front.
    Please help this has been a thorn in my side for too long...

    please post a screen shot of the graphic(s) as it's hard to understand exactly what you are asking
    IF these are 'vector' graphics there should be no need for a clipping mask--also--if the .eps files are small (MB or KB) try posting one of those

  • Clipping Mask not working

    Okay, so I am EXTREMELY new to this (I started about an hour ago!) I am trying to make a clipping mask with the mask being the outline of France and the image inside the French flag. Here are the steps I've taken so far:
    File>New
    Open>Silhouette of France (photo)
    Image trace as silhouette>Expand.
    Drag in to new file.
    Open>French flag (photo)
    Drag in to new file and put in separate layer to the silhouette.
    Place the silhouette on top of the French flag, select all, make clipping mask.
    Then everything goes white!! I can still see the outline, paths etc. of the silhouette but I just don't understand what I'm doing wrong! If someone could explain it to me in layman's terms that would be amazing because I really don't know what I'm doing!
    I'll include the pictures I am using and the end result I keep getting...

    SoBo,
    The France parts seem to be a Group rather than a Compound Path. It would be better if you could expand the Layer(s) completely, also expanding the Group.
    As I said, an Opacity Mask may be more forgiving, and work with a Group.
    I took the France parts to have no stroke and a white fill, if not, you may give it one (or a black fill), then (the Invert Mask suggested in post #2 was based on a black fill, sorry):
    1) Select the two parts of France and Object>Group or Object>Compound Mask>Make;
    2) Select all and in the Appearance palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask with Clip ticked and Invert Mask unticked (ticked if the fill is black).
    From the OP:
    Drag in to new file and put in separate layer to the silhouette.
    To have it in the same layer, just have one Layer and File>Place the flag image into it, then the France image, and take it from there.

  • Help with Illustrator Clipping Mask!

    Hi,
    I am trying to make a clipping mask over a alot of vectors (to be specific, have made an envelope design so am trying to use the template/evenlope outline as the clipping path) however when ever I try to create the clipping mask - command 7 - all the vectors inside are deleted mostly or half dissapear.
    I have tried;
    Making sure the clipping path is the top layer in the layers panel
    Ungrouping the vectors and selecting individually to mask all together
    Putting all into a new document and clipping
    Seperating the clipping path and what I want to clip into differnt layers
    None of the above has worked as yet, I have done this plenty of times before but am not sure what I am over looking. I am using CS5 on a mac.
    Thanks for anyones help!
    here is what I am trying to do; I need all of the vecotrs to be masked by the envelope outline.

    I you are using a template in AI CS 4 or 5 then it is possible thgat the template is an artboard which you cannot use as a clipping mask.
    You would have to draw a rectaangle to the size of the enevelope template and use that rectangle path as a clipping mask.
    Ok! Besides from that possibility if yiou are printing an envelope withy objects that have to be clipped to the edge of the front of the enevelope that is not a very good idea.
    Even if you are printing and then converting the envelope it is a bad idea as you8 would definitely need a bleed and that would wrap around to the back of the envelope and in a nott so pretty way.
    OK so say you are using an inkjet that can print on an envelope and it can even successfu8lly print it with a bleed feature the way thoise  bleed features have to work is that they enlarge the art slightly and so whyat every you design and create will be enlarge and trying to figure that out is not going to be very easy.

  • How to get transparent lines in a black box (clipping mask)?

    Hello,
    This is the first time I am using Illustrator so I'm hoping this is a simple question.  I created a black box and a series of white line segments through it.  Now I need those white lines to "cut" the black box.  In the end, I need just the black parts of the box with basically transparent lines in it (so the lines take on whatever the background happens to be - i.e. another image or color).  I tried to group the line segments together and create a clipping mask but did not have any luck.  Does someone have any tips on how this can be accomplished?
    Thanks, Marc

    Expand the strokes using Object > Path > Outline Stroke. Select the lot and click on the Divide button in the Pathfinder panel (second row, left button). Delete everything not black.

  • Automatically create clipping masks

    Hello,
    I was watching this amazing video -
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebVFXphyJqw
    - and I noticed, that flash has a feature, that seems to automatically create clipping masks.
    She starts using these at 1:45. She draws blue paths and applies gradients to shapes that use the blue paths but also underlying art.
    I haven't figured out a quick way in illustrator to do it like this. (Draw path - divide - livepaint - new fill can produce such results, but thats too complicated for quick shading...)
    Also there is a feature right at the beginning, where she erases segments of circular paths. They are exactly cut at the intersection points. Of course there are scissors and snapping in AI, but that method flash seems to offer looks much more convenient.
    Maybe those functions are burrowed in some side menus in AI... I mean, I have Flash CS6, but I feel much more comfortable in AI.
    If you know these features, especially the auto clipping mask thing, please tell me
    -Andrej

    Wow, the draw inside mode was also new to me. So much to learn!
    It's a pity that it does not create merged clipping groups when having two objects selected simultaneously upon entering drawing inside mode.
    I have not figured out, how to use the shapebuilder tool with single paths yet.
    But I did try out the Pathfinder's outline operation. It seems to give me the seperated strokes I demanded.
    Thanks for your help again Monika.

  • Zebra print - clipping mask help

    I'm new to Illustrator and am having trouble getting a clipping mask to work the way I want it to.  I have a zebra print pattern over the top of some lettering and I want to keep the shape of the lettering while incorporating the zebra print.  See my screen shot.  What steps do I need to take?  I tried Pathfinder and Shape Modes, but they don't come out right.
    All I want is to have the lettering incorporate the zebra print without having points outside the letter shape.
    Adrian

    There are several ways to do this. Two options are: pattern fill or a clipping mask.
    Pattern fill
    Create a pattern from your zebra pattern by:
    1. Setting the pattern artwork in front of a rectangle that has no stroke or fill.
    2. Select the pattern AND the rectangle and drag them into the Swatch panel. A "pattern fill" swatch will be added to the panel.
    3. Select your text and assign the pattern fill to the text.
    This should ideally be a "seamless" pattern. You can read about that in the online help.
    NOTE: If your pattern contains only the black portion of the fill (the white area is blank), you can add a second fill attribute to the text by using the Attributes panel:
    1. Select the text.
    2. Go to the fly-out menu on the Attributes panel and select "new fill".
    3. Drag the new fill below the "Characters" in the Attributes panel.
    4. Assign any color to it.
    Clipping Mask
    1. Set your text above the pattern, in the artboard (no need to convert it to outlines).
    2. Select text and pattern and choose Menu item: Object/Clipping Mask/Make (or Cmd-7, mac or Ctl-7 pc)
    3. Reselect the text and assign it a new color (objects lose their color when converted to a clipping mask, but it can be reassigned).
    Hope this helps.

  • Clipping mask issue.. simple one but I can't see it.

    I want to fill the pattern into the shield.
    Tried everything on this, it's so simple that I can not even see it.
    Maybe it's the double lines on outline view?
    Please help. Multi million dollar idea going to waste.

    Kanokane,
    I tried to just give a detailed list of things to do, with no explanation.
    Fundamentally, you use a single path (which may be a Compound Path) as the Clipping Path of the Clipping Mask, and you select both that and whatever you have beneath it that you wish to clip.
    When you apply the Clipping Mask, everything covered by the Clipping Path remains visible, and everything else becomes invisible; and the Clipping Path also becomes invisible, losing its Stroke and/or Fill (Fill in this case).
    So when your shield is a rather thin Compound Path formed by the outer and the inner path, only the parts between those become visible, instead of filling the space inside.
    1) is meant to keep the visible black outline formed by the Compound Path on top of everything else, and to bring a copy of either the outer or the inner path down beneath it; this is to serve as the Clipping Path; Alt/OptionClicking is to select the whole path, not just an Anchor Point or a segment.
    2) is meant to bring the pattern down beneath the Clipping Path.
    3) is meant to preserve the visible black outline formed by the Compound Path (by locking it) and to select the Clipping Path and the pattern (when the Compound Path is locked, you can just ClickDrag over everything and avoid selecting it), then apply the Clipping Mask.
    4) is meant to have everything as a Group (consisting of the Compound Path and the Clipping Mask).
    Whether you use the inner or outer path as the Clipping Path matters little; in the former case only the space inside the black rim is visible, in the latter case, the outermost part of it is hidden be the rim.

  • Preserve the clipping mask appearance

    When I use a clipping mask, I want to preserve at least the fill and stroke of the container object. Freehand did this. It would be cool if Adobe analyzed what Freehand did better than Illustrator.
    As it is, I'm forced either to recolor the container object, or to make a copy of it juts to contain the second shape, which adds to the layer clutter, and has the disadvantage of getting in the way of the primary shape.

    According to me, so Hides the object to create a new shape to work as well in PhotoShop. Why do I need a new shape for me to add itself to group obiect no fill and no outline of how I wanted. Just that it was just like a dashed line indicated in the Outline view mode.
    Adobe probably does not want to lose customers mixing the old with the new solution, but if it's a good way? Just that it will conduct a survey of the market.
    Now it is overly complicated. Here, I made up such a description.

  • Clipping Mask question

    Hello
    For example in illustrator CS2 I have a photo of someone and I want to make a Star shape mask of the head. No I normally select both the photo and the star shape and go to Object>Clipping Mask>Make.
    And it works fine, it masked out the bits that I don't want perfectly, but I still get the highlight/outline edge of the shape of the original photo when I select the star shape, how can I do this so that when I make a clipping mask it will not show the original shape of the photo?
    I think I've managed to do this once before in the past but forgot how I did it.
    Hope that makes sense, thank you very much in advance.

    MW,
    You may perform the otherwise dirty destructive deed:
    With the mask selected:
    1) In the Transparency palette dropdown, select Multiply, or anything else but normal;
    2) Object>Flatten Transparency.

  • Should I use a clipping mask for this? Am I approaching this the wrong way?

    Greetings and Salutations!
         I am currently creating some cycling jerseys for my friends and I. Im fairly new to Illustrator, so I created my "Proof" in Photoshop.
    This is what it is suppose to look like.
    Now that the proof got a thumbs up, i need to vectorize this and get it ready for print.
    Though I've run into a small issue. Im not sure exactly how I should proceed in correcting this.
    I lay the outline of the Lion down
    I then created a "fill" layer with an opacity of 50%
    Together they form the feline version of Voltron
    Now I need to insert the yellow Lion. Thus I duplicate both layers and change the light blue to a yellow, and this happens due to the opacity of the "fill" layer
    You can see the yellow lion in behind the blue lion! Expected since i have the fill layer at 50%!
    I dont know how to correct this. I was thinking of making a clipping mask for Lion #2
    But wasnt sure if thats what i needed to do. Can anyone give me advice?
    I feel like I am toying with unknown technology and ive accidentally created a monster! Halp before it gains consciousness!

    add a white shape behind black design.

  • How to make clipping mask with text and vector pattern?

    Hey there guys, any help would be greatly appreciated. Im making a logo for a client and am having a nightmare of a time trying to properly use the clipping masks in illustrator CS5. I copied and pasted the  logo I made behind itself with a different color just for a drop shadow-like effect. And now I'm trying to apply this diagonal line pattern I created over top the "shadow" I made to give it some texture.
    Here's an example of what I'm going for, only imagine the line pattern on the text instead of banner

    Eric,
    As I (mis)understand it, you can either keep the Type live (or outline it) and:
    1) Create one copy of the pattern for each Type object (this will give you the opportunity of having different(ly coloured) patterns;
    2) For each Type object, select the type object and one of the patterns and Object>Clipping Path>Make;
    or you can:
    1) Select both Type objects and Type>Create Outlines, then Object>Compound Path>Make;
    2) Select the compound object and the pattern and Object>Clipping Path>Make.

  • Use a compound path as clipping mask?

    Hello,
    I’m trying to use a complex compound path as a clipping mask, but it won’t work. I have narrowed down the problem a little in two smaller scripts described below.
    Using a single path as clipping mask works very well:
    var doc = app.documents.add();
    var clipGroup = doc.groupItems.add();
    var bgItem = clipGroup.pathItems.rectangle(200, 200, 200, 200);
    bgItem.position = Array(200, 500);
    bgItem.fillColor = doc.swatches[8].color;
    var fgItem = clipGroup.pathItems.polygon(144, 288, 72.0, 7);
    fgItem.position = Array(220, 480);
    fgItem.fillColor = doc.swatches[7].color;
    fgItem.zOrder(ZOrderMethod.BRINGTOFRONT);
    clipGroup.clipped = true;
    alert(clipGroup.clipped); // will alert true
    But when trying the simplest form of a compound path, it’s not working:
    var doc = app.documents.add();
    var clipGroup = doc.groupItems.add();
    var bgItem = clipGroup.pathItems.rectangle(200, 200, 200, 200);
    bgItem.position = Array(200, 500);
    bgItem.fillColor = doc.swatches[8].color;
    var compoundItem = clipGroup.compoundPathItems.add();
    var fgItem = compoundItem.pathItems.polygon(144, 288, 72.0, 7);
    fgItem.position = Array(220, 480);
    fgItem.fillColor = doc.swatches[7].color;
    compoundItem.zOrder(ZOrderMethod.BRINGTOFRONT);
    clipGroup.clipped = true;
    alert(clipGroup.clipped); // will alert false
    Using compound paths as clipping masks is really simple in the Illustrator GUI. So what am I missing here?
    Help would be greatly appreciated.

    The simplest way, I think, would be to set the white line work as an opacity mask on top of the tan circle. That is not a clipping mask, but does the same thing and it's much easier.
    Otherwise, outline white strokes and "Unite" using pathfinder tool, then delete outside path (the circle), from the compound shape. That will leave the appropriate compound object to make the clipping mask:
