Clipping mask over sunbeam changes transparency / appearance?

Hi, Quick question:
I have a poster that contains a sunbeam vector (like the shape found in photoshop "shapes" - circle with beams that project outward). Anywho, I have this shape in my illustrator file and need to clip the edges off for the client who wants the piece to have a 1" white border around the edges of the enture design.
When I place an empty box / shape over the sunbeams then click "make clipping mask" it changes the appearance / colouring of the sunbeams. I have a multiply transparency applied to the sunbeam - how can I preserve the original appearance if I need to put a white border / cut off the edges of the sunbeam? Is there a better option than a clipping mask, or am I missing a step somewhere?
Thank you,
Chemol

Thanks!!!!  That did the trick - very much appreciated - you're a gem!

  • Clipping Mask over Multiple Layers

    Hi,
I have a multiple layer file and I want to apply a clipping mask over the entire design as my last step to block out all of the excess around the edges of the clipboard. Every time I try this the layers are merged into one but I want to maintain the layers.
Is it possible to have a mask and keep the layers?

Make a new layer and drag all the existing layers into in, making them sublayers. Draw your mask in this master layer, select it, and go to Make Clipping Mask in the Layers panelette.

  • Help with Illustrator Clipping Mask!

    Hi,
I am trying to make a clipping mask over a alot of vectors (to be specific, have made an envelope design so am trying to use the template/evenlope outline as the clipping path) however when ever I try to create the clipping mask - command 7 - all the vectors inside are deleted mostly or half dissapear.
    I have tried;
Making sure the clipping path is the top layer in the layers panel
Ungrouping the vectors and selecting individually to mask all together
Putting all into a new document and clipping
Seperating the clipping path and what I want to clip into differnt layers
None of the above has worked as yet, I have done this plenty of times before but am not sure what I am over looking. I am using CS5 on a mac.
    Thanks for anyones help!
here is what I am trying to do; I need all of the vecotrs to be masked by the envelope outline.

I you are using a template in AI CS 4 or 5 then it is possible thgat the template is an artboard which you cannot use as a clipping mask.
You would have to draw a rectaangle to the size of the enevelope template and use that rectangle path as a clipping mask.
Ok! Besides from that possibility if yiou are printing an envelope withy objects that have to be clipped to the edge of the front of the enevelope that is not a very good idea.
Even if you are printing and then converting the envelope it is a bad idea as you8 would definitely need a bleed and that would wrap around to the back of the envelope and in a nott so pretty way.
OK so say you are using an inkjet that can print on an envelope and it can even successfu8lly print it with a bleed feature the way thoise  bleed features have to work is that they enlarge the art slightly and so whyat every you design and create will be enlarge and trying to figure that out is not going to be very easy.

  • Cropping vs Clipping Masks etc.

I'm a graphic designer more familiar with photoshop but I'm starting to familiarize myself a lot more with illlustrator lately.  I just been having trouble with the correct way to crop things in illustrator using pathfinder or a clipping mask.   I have attached an image of what I'm trying to do, just tried a bunch of things but not getting the result I want.  I basically want to crop the curved paths to the rectangular box below.  Can someone give me a detailed description of how to go about this?  I did use a blend to create the curved line pattern but I already expanded it to separate objects, I just can't seem to get any desired results using the pathfinder pallete.  I also have a lot of trouble using clipping mask because illustrator has all it's crazy group and I always get errors when trying to make clipping masks.  Any advice would be much appreciated!

For my part you are welcome, stalsbee. Steve is an hour later than I (or not), so when I stopped posting about 00.14 AM yesterday, he posted here until 23.39 PM.
By the way, if you are in a scathing mood (or just tire of selecting the parts outside the Bounding Box of the Clipping Path, or wish to reduce the (file) size for export) you may use the Clipping Mask destructively (always save (a copy of) the artwork before destroying it):
    1) With the Clipping Mask selected, you may Transparency dropdown>Multiply (or whatever else than Normal);
    2) Object>Flatten Transparency (just keep the defaults).

  • Clipping Mask with photo question

Hi everyone!  I'm having issues trying to create a clipping mask over a photo.  I have consulted 2 books and several other sites to no avail.  Here's the breakdown:
I have a compound path shape layered on top of a rasterized photo.
I select both, choose Object, Clipping Mask, Make and both objects become clear.
(I've tried variations and the closest I came was when, after the Clip Mask, Make commands, I made the shape white.  The image shows through but now there's a white fill surrounding the shape. It's still not what I want.)
I'm close and appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks. I made the object a compound path before I started but no dice.
This image is the closest I've gotten to what I want but obviously it's wrong.  (this was after several failed attempts, I simply made the mask shape white.)

  • Clipping mask question 2.

Hello, so about a week ago I was having some trouble with my clipping mask I had posted a question Here about it. Over the week I believe i see what the problem maybe but i do not  know how to fix it (once again) This is what I mean:
As you can see in the image above, there are little pixels around the image after i finished coloring and erasing my mess. (i used a wacom tablet to do this by the way.)
In this image I created a clipping mask over the image above and i began "shading." But the color went over once again. I Believe it has something to do with those little pixels.
May someone please help me by telling me why those little pixels are There and how i can get rid of them. Also If you have an idea at why the mask is not working also let me know as well

I suspect you are flat out going about things in the wrong way.  I can't see reason you'd need or want to clip layers to achieve what you are doing.  The spill is probably anti-aliasing from the brush or erasor.  Niether tend to achieve 100% coverage with one pass.
Rather an use the erasor,  much better to make a selection and add a layer mask.  This will produce a hard edged editable layer.
Try drawing your lines on a roughing out layer, and then colouring on an underlying layer using different layers for each colour.  When done, Ctrl (Cmd) click the colour fill layer which will load its outline as a selection.  You can then go Edit > Stroke with black on a new layer higher up the stack.

  • Clipping Mask with complex designs

I have a somewhat complex design/vector object that I can get to clipping mask over an image.  When is does it masks in the wrong places and outside of the design that was made into a compound. Why can't I get the design to mask correctly?

Please show a screen shot of what you are trying to do.
Sometimes a compound path can be used to good effect as a clipping mask, but we would need to see a shot of your work to be able to advise you properly.

  • Clipping mask help???!!!

    Hi Guys
I have recnetly made an image up of a number of shapes.  i have then placed a rectangular clipping mask over to get the desired effect.  however i wouldd like to envelope distort the rectangle but its selecting all the single pieces and not the rectangle. van anyone tell me how to correct this.
    Many Thanks

You would have to group the items or use Pathfinders to unify them, then define the warp. This has nothing to do with teh clipping mask. Clipping masks merely define the visibility and don't affect items beyond that...

  • Is it possible to make a transparent section inside an existing clipping mask?

    Hi,
I would like to make the words 'heather hall' transparent knocking through the clipping mask it sits upon.
    Is this possible please?
    Many thanks,
    Ben

    Ben,
A very simple way is to change the colour of heather hall to black, then select everything and in the Transparency Palette flyout click Make Opacity Mask with Clip and Invert mask unticked.
heather hall may be live Type or a Group of paths or a Compound Path made of the individual letter paths/groups/compound paths.

  • Two questions - Clipping Mask and Change color in group

    Hello,
I have a file I rendered in Maya as a vector. I am not that great with illustrator, so I was trying to speed things up...
Anyway, it appears all the file have a Clipping Mask. If I unrelease it, it shows a plain with a similiar dimensions that is the original color of the object. See image for before and after...
Also, the same object says it is in a group. Because of that, I can't seem to change it's color, and the Ungroup button is greyed out... very confusing.
    Jared

I rendered in Maya as a vector. I am not that great with illustrator, so I was trying to speed things up...
First, please forgive a little pet-peeve of mine:
You didn't render it as "a vector." A vector is a direction. You rendered it as vector-based artwork, which means it consists of [many] vector paths. I'm aware of the informal colloquialism, and I'm not just picking nits. The use of "a vector" as if in some corollary sense to "a raster image"--which I find so irritating--is misleading, especailly to newcomers.
When you refer to "a raster image", you are correctly referring to one object. When you refer to vector artwork, you are almost always referring to a collection of multiple vector-based paths, not a single object. And that is directly related to your current problem.
I assume there's a reason you need vector artwork. But you chose to have a 3D modelling program automatically render the model to vector artwork, hoping to shortcut a process while hoping to achieve the advantages inherent in vector artwork because, in your own words, you are "not that great with Illustrator." The example illustrates the self-defeating disadvantage of relying on automatic routines (much like the gross overuse of auto-tracing) to avoid having to know how to draw proper (and properly tidy) vector artwork. The end result is not the same.
Like auto-tracing, your auto-generated vector-based output is needlessly complex. This is particluarly poor practice for something intended to be used as base art for a corporate or product identity mark (logo). In a nutshell, it's sloppy.
That's why you find the results difficult to work with, and why responders to your post stumble in trying to advise you with specific step-by-step answers. The artwork very likely includes an unnecessary plethora of paths and multiple unnecessary constructs such as clipping paths and compound paths.
If this is intended to serve as an ongoing "master" vector version of an identity mark, imagine the similar difficulties that will be encountered by every downstream user. Yes, the artwork may be scaleable. But the results are not optimized for use as signage, or engraving, or screen printing, or spot-color printing, or a multitude of other uses assumed to be accommodated when someone pays for a proper piece of re-usable vector artwork.
So resorting to something like Maya's vector rendering for something like this, in hopes of avoiding what is really a rather modest learning curve, is quite often a false economy yielding sub-standard results from a technial standpoint.
It's a pity in this case, because the design itself is a good one. I don't know what your specific use is, but It probably deserves to be properly built.
To illustrate my point, below is an example from an earlier discussion. The top version was "automatically rendered as vector artwork" from Illustrator's own built-in 3D modeller. Yes, strictly speaking, it is "vector artwork." But its needless complexity practically negates most of the advantges that should be inherent in vector drawing. I would never have tried to pass it off as a finished "vector version" of someone's identity mark.

  • Clipping mask with appearances?

Hi all, I was trying to create a clipping mask from an object that is made from two shapes, and one has appearances (thanks to Rufus Deuchler's evangelism), but I had to resort to expand appearance, then use the object as a clipping mask.
Is there really no way to keep the dynamic appearances and use a layer as a clipping mask?

You can also try using the transparency palette flyout >> Make opacity mask
Works similar to opacity masks as in Photoshop, and you can either use black for tranparent or white for tranparent dpending on if you click invert.

  • Clipping masks from AI jumping all over the place in AE

I have a project I've been working on for a while, and have encountered an extremely annoying bug that only seems to have appeared since the latest update...
Basically, I have a bunch of layers from Illustrator which have clipping masks within them. When I bring these into After Effects and add any kind of movement (camera, masks etc), the images inside the clipping masks jump around all over the place. Not the masks themselves, or the layers - just the images inside them.
This has only started happening since the latest update to CC 2014 - it's something I've done a million times before and it's always been fine.
Really hoping someone can shed some light on this, as I don't have much hair left to pull out...
    Thanks

one update - we had a look back at some of the previous projects we've produced using this technique, and it's still apparent there (so in CC & CC2014 projects) - it just seems to be much worse in this particular project.

  • Any way to change speed of a clip in "over-write edit" mode?

I want to change the speed of a clip in the timeline without having to lock all the other tracks or having to move the other following clips out of sync. For example I have a clip which lasts for 1 sec, which I want to change to 3 secs. Normally when I do this in the timeline the other clips on the same video tracks which follows, will move their position..... How to change speed in "over-write edit mode"?

I think it's even easier to just match frame the "source file"... put your playhead on the clip you want to speed change in your sequence. Then type optioncmdf. Perform the speed change in the Viewer, then simply cut it in... Might help to put it up above the older, use the double arrow selection tool facing right to move the clips past this change later... pull the upper track speed changed clip down over the old, and viola.
Gotta say though, it's a lot easier to perform the speed change in the Viewer, and edit it all in as you go rather than doing it after you've put the clip in a sequence. (not always possible to determine what the speed change should be maybe, but sure easier.... FCP 7 handles this problem a lot better for sure, and worth the upgrade price if your machine is compatible.

  • How to get transparent lines in a black box (clipping mask)?

    Hello,
This is the first time I am using Illustrator so I'm hoping this is a simple question.  I created a black box and a series of white line segments through it.  Now I need those white lines to "cut" the black box.  In the end, I need just the black parts of the box with basically transparent lines in it (so the lines take on whatever the background happens to be - i.e. another image or color).  I tried to group the line segments together and create a clipping mask but did not have any luck.  Does someone have any tips on how this can be accomplished?
    Thanks, Marc

Expand the strokes using Object > Path > Outline Stroke. Select the lot and click on the Divide button in the Pathfinder panel (second row, left button). Delete everything not black.

  • Preserve the clipping mask appearance

When I use a clipping mask, I want to preserve at least the fill and stroke of the container object. Freehand did this. It would be cool if Adobe analyzed what Freehand did better than Illustrator.
As it is, I'm forced either to recolor the container object, or to make a copy of it juts to contain the second shape, which adds to the layer clutter, and has the disadvantage of getting in the way of the primary shape.

According to me, so Hides the object to create a new shape to work as well in PhotoShop. Why do I need a new shape for me to add itself to group obiect no fill and no outline of how I wanted. Just that it was just like a dashed line indicated in the Outline view mode.
Adobe probably does not want to lose customers mixing the old with the new solution, but if it's a good way? Just that it will conduct a survey of the market.
Now it is overly complicated. Here, I made up such a description.
