Clipping Masks for Groups in PS6

Hi,
I followed a tutorial for creating a clipping mask for a group. I made a group of several layers, place another layer on top of this group and, holding the 'alt' key clicked between them. The thumbnail of the top image showed it had now been clipped but no clipping had actually happened. I've tried this a couple of times with different images in the layers but to no avail. I'm using Creative Cloud's latest version of Photoshop.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to create a clip mask for a group?

    I have created a hue/saturation adjust that I want to use as clip mask for a group of layers. How do I do that? I can create a single layer clip mask of hue/saturation but not a whole group of layers.

    You can nest it with its adjustment layer in another group and set that group to normal (instead of pass through). But setting the second group to normal may affect any blending you have going on in the first group.

         I am currently creating some cycling jerseys for my friends and I. Im fairly new to Illustrator, so I created my "Proof" in Photoshop.
    This is what it is suppose to look like.
    Now that the proof got a thumbs up, i need to vectorize this and get it ready for print.
    Though I've run into a small issue. Im not sure exactly how I should proceed in correcting this.
    I lay the outline of the Lion down
    I then created a "fill" layer with an opacity of 50%
    Together they form the feline version of Voltron
    Now I need to insert the yellow Lion. Thus I duplicate both layers and change the light blue to a yellow, and this happens due to the opacity of the "fill" layer
    You can see the yellow lion in behind the blue lion! Expected since i have the fill layer at 50%!
    I dont know how to correct this. I was thinking of making a clipping mask for Lion #2
    But wasnt sure if thats what i needed to do. Can anyone give me advice?
    I feel like I am toying with unknown technology and ive accidentally created a monster! Halp before it gains consciousness!

  • Is there a tutorial on making a Mask,Or Clipping Mask for CS4?

    I have imported a file of a sheet of music,and all I want is the sheet, not the background. Easy to do so in PS. I didn't know I could "print screen" directly into .AI and I've tried making a clipping mask so I could use the sheet as a background to no avail.  Really appreciate the help.....thanks...mm

    Let's see you can lock the art or image of the sheet music in the layers panel and the freely use the pen tool on top of it.
    You can group if you wish the art for sheet music and then center that within the artboard then lock the grup in the layers panel and freely work ove the locked group.
    you select that group and drag it into the symbols panel and make it a symbol and that would protect it even further and you also lock that symbol.
    You can edit the art of the symbol without undoing the clipping path by editing the symbol.
    Might be a good option.
    The shape you make for the clipping mask ca be selected along with the and the option to aline to artboard chosen then center the two horizontally and vertical or just one direction.

    Oh, yes once you have the masked art you can turn that art into a symbol s well place and position it anyway you want then if it has to be different fro the other sheets break the link to the parent symbol and make that a symbol as well.

  • P.S.Elements. How do i use the clipping mask for painting? I can't quite apply it for anything.

    I'm wondering if the clipping mask can be used for painting on layers. I can't get it to do anything. I'm rendering race car paint schemes. Elements doesn't have paths. I have Gimp but I want to stick with photoshop. Something about Gimp I just didn't feel it

    Could you give an example of what you are trying to do ?
    The concept of clipping mask is not intuitive at all. Besides 'normal' layer masks associated with their layer, the clipping mask is a 'normal' layer having transparency. It has a what was called a 'linked layer' in older version. The 'clipping mask' layer determines transparency of the linked layer (which is shown offset to the right in the layers panel) to show that the effect of the clipping mask is limited to the above linked layer(s). Instead of having one layer with a mask, you have a mask targetting the 'above' layer.
    The difference is that the normal mask uses greyscale values to represent transparency while the clipping mask has real transparency.
    So, the purpose being masking, I don't see how you could use it to paint ?

  • Clipping Mask for placement into InDesign document

    I have a drawing in Illustrator CS3.
    I need to "place" certain sections of this drawing into an InDesign CS3 document using the File--->Place command.  These sections will need a 1 pt black border when they get "placed" into InDesign.
    Pretty sure Clipping Masks are the answer but I've never used them.  Can someone tell me how to do this?  Do I need to create new files from the Clipping Masks to pull this off?

    This would entail making a compound clipping mask with many "windows". You will need to give the mask a stroke afterwards
    Just save your Illie file with pdf compatability an place it into InDesign in the usual way (Cmd+D).

  • Trying to make clipping mask - HELP!

    So I'm trying to make a clipping mask for this graphic in picture 34, I want it to look like picture 35.
    I've got the contruction guy on layer 1, and the two cut outs on layer 2 above, I've grouped them all and click on clipping mask/make and nothing happens. I want the two cuts to cut out those sections on the contruction object.
    Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

    Here's what I did:
    1. bring the two white shapes to the front
    2. send the black construction guy to the back
    3. select everything
    4. Effect/Pathfinder>Minus Front/Subtract
    Do not use Effect, use the Pathfinder palette, bundled with the Transform and Align palettes.
    Then it should work.
    Minus Front is the name of the option in the newest version(s), Subtract from Shape Area in older ones.

  • Trouble with mass amount of text and clipping mask - please help!

    I have a curvy vector image that I want text to appear in, then create a clipping mask. When I try this I get a message saying that the text object is extremely complex and might not print. The file is impossible to move around and sometimes crashes my machine.

    I blocked all the text so there's just a ton of it.
    This is for a large graphic (22') that will be placed on glass.
    Is there a better way to do this? Or a way of making the file more manageable ?

    Inaccurate description. You are using the text as a clipping mask for the image. That's a lot of text, which means a very complex compound path with tens of thousands of points. No wonder this is slowing things down.
    Try using the text as an opacity mask instead, then flatten transparency. Keep a copy of the text and a copy of the wave on hidden layers so you can go back and edit the text or modify the path.

  • Clip Mask and MovieClip pivot questions

    Two more beginner questions:
    1) What's the easiest way to invert a clipping mask for a
    MovieClip in ActionScript? I tried using a ColorTransformMatrix to
    invert the alpha of the mask MovieClip, but it didn't work (looks
    like the clip mask simply does nothing where there are no filled
    shapes). I would like to add a graphic everywhere EXCEPT within the
    area of an animated MovieClip, and due to various requirements I
    cannot simply place it behind that MovieClip.
    2) Is there a way to set the pivot of a MovieClip in relation
    to the animated drawings/frames? It looks like the "origin" of a
    movieclip is the lower left-most corner of all the bounding boxes
    of all the frames of animation in my MovieClip. So if I set the _x
    and _y of a MovieClip in ActionScript to 150,150 it places the
    lowerleft-hand corner there instead of what I would like to be
    logical center of the MovieClip (say, center of a wheelbase of a
    car, or center of the feet of a person, or center of mass of a
    rock). I am fine with dialing in an offset, but just wondering if
    there is a cleaner way to do it (esp. if I happen to add more
    animation frames or replace drawings and the bounding box changes
    size).

    Ah, I figured everything out.
    1) Actually, the ColorTransformMatrix does work, but I didn't
    realize that alpha was 0-255, not 0-1 (you'd think after being
    bitten by MovieClip scales being 100 = 100% instead of 1 = 100%,
    I'd have guessed, but...). So a ColorTransformMatrix of
    (1 0 0 0 0)
    (0 1 0 0 0)
    (0 0 1 0 0)
    (0 0 0 -1 255)
    applied to the mask will successfully invert it. Nice.
    2) Apparently I had previously messed up grabbing all the
    images and dragging them - I had forgotten to turn onion skinning
    to "onion all" so that I could actually see everything (all my
    images are all on top of each other so it wasn't obvious I didn't
    have everything visible). I had been selecting all the frames and
    dragging the images around in relation to the registration point,
    but only the last 3 frames were actually moving, and they happened
    to be a part of the animation I didn't bother triggering while
    testing. Oops.

  • CS6 actions batch saving images to a clipping mask issue

    Hey all,
    Been at this for quite some while now and searched the www thin for suggestion - so really hope someone can help me out here.
    Objective:
    - Target a folder with xxx .gif patterns (in the same size)
    - Setup actions to batch open each image from the folder, copy the pattern image individually over to a .PSD file that have a silhouette of the sleeve.
    - Apply the individual pattern to the clipping mask
    - Save it out as .png
    Issue:
    So far ive only had the automate > batch process to save out one .png with the pattern correctly applied to the silhouette.
    What I experince is that, if I close down everything and initiate automate > batch process then Photoshop will complain about not being able to locate the clipping mask.
    In my action setup I first open my .psd containing my sleeve shape, then open an actual pattern image and then all other steps ending up with saving the .psd with pattern clipping mask to .png.
    Just to give a simple idea about my setup take a look here:

    Thanks a lot for your throughout response - really appreciate it!
    I do acknowledge that im new to batch in Photoshop and could possibly why this is not working for me - although in not quite sure why and what I would need to make as a programmed script - would you by any chance try to give me an idea on what specific step needs to be programmed?
    My actions are very few and quite simple, and seemed to fit in very nicely in how ive understood the actions feature would work - in any case of not being precise enough here's my exact steps.
    1. I open up Photoshop - No documents or anything are open at current point. I click "Record" in actions
    2. I open my sleeve_layer.PSD  file (which opens up in a tab) -> File -> Open -> PSD
    3. I open one of the pattern .gif files (which opens up in a tab) - which are all located in the same folder with the same size -> File -> Open -> .gif
    4. In my pattern tab window (from nr 3) I select all (ctrl-a) -> copy (ctrl-c)
    5. I then click over to my sleeve_layer.PSD window tab and paste (ctrl-v) my copied pattern image into a layer above my sleeve layer.
    6. I then right-click with my mouse on the pattern.gif layer -> click "Create clipping mask" (the pattern is now only shown within the sleeve layer shape)
    7. I save the work done in the .psd to web -> File -> Save for web -> .png
    8. I then close my sleeve_layer.PSD - without saving it (since I dont want to have clipping masks for each pattern stacking up from the batch)
    9. Recording ends
    If I now run the batch all actions are done fine until it reaches the action with the clipping mask - where I get "The command "Create clipping mask" is not currently available" - I can see that when this error appears, im not seeing any open sleeve_layer.PSD tab - so not sure if the psd file is actually getting opened (and this might be the error for the reference error of the clipping mask to appear).
    If I try to manually RUN the actions set in the actions panel, I notice though that the sleeve_layer.PSD tab is getting opened.
    When running automate -> batch -> I point "source" to my folder of all patterns (only .gif files appear in this folder)
    "Destination" folder is set to some other folder.

    When I attempt to create a clipping mask using grouped objects (any objects - outlines created from text mostly)it does not work. Creating a mask from 1 object does work! I have looked at 'Help' and seem to be following instructions correctly. What is going on, can anyone assist?

    First, create a compound path out of the outlined text, then use the compound as a clipping path.
