Clipping of log and xsan error...don't worry it's brief
this is the error I get when I boo the xsan admin app and I try to link to my bumdc. the san works fine but it's just getting into the admin app thats the problem. I thought that maybe someone has seen this before and can give me some ideas. thanks.

Are you working in a word processing document or a page layout one? The process is pretty much the same for either, but in word processing you will need to ⌘-click outside of the layout first to enter object mode. Click & drag the cursor toward the object until you see its handles. If any other objects get selected, hold down the ⌘ key & click on them to deselect them. Now, with just this object selected you can delete it or move it to the front.

How to name clips in Log and Transfer
I work at a production company and we log and transfer a lot of High Definition footage. We can't seem to figure out an efficient way to label all of our clips though. I can name the Reel but how do you name clips without spending all day clicking on each clip and renaming.
When renaming clips in Log and Transfer, I found out the hard way that these names are stored with the FCP project file that is open at the time, and this data will disappear if you try ingest it while another FCP files is open.
In other words, if you are working on a project and want video you ingested for a different project, using Log and Transfer to get those clips will leave you without all of the clip names that you spend so much time adding.
Has anyone found a way around this?

In FCP-X is there a way to import AVCHD clips from an AVCHD file folder I have copied from my Canon hard disk camcorder to my iMac hard disk? With FCE I used log and transfer with no problem; but, FCP-X doesn't import them. It will import AIC files that have been created in FCE from the original AVCHD files. If FCP-X will not import these files directly from the copied AVCHD folder, is there a workaround using other software to convert the files? For example, Compressor? (Canon does not provide any AVCHD conversion software for OSX).

I have exactly the same problem but the answer you (Tom) provided did not help in my case. Trying to "Import ->From Camera" and pointing to the AVCHD folder yields the error message: "(Folder) contains unsupported files or has invalid directory structure."

My question is: Is that not a "camera archive" of the type you talked about in the thread? Is it on principle not possible to import the files in that format/directory structure? If not, since the shots were not taken by myself, what should I ask the guy who shot the movies to give me to be able to work with them in FC?
I work with a brand new Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4 (still very clumsy with it) on an iMac 11,3 with MacOS 10.6.8.
I downloaded the latest version of codec updates from the Apple support site but no difference.

So I've imported AVCHD files into FCE4 in the past on a couple of computers through the Log and Transfer in the software, but on my new macbook pro, for some reason, when I drag the selected video file to be transferred, it will sit there for a few seconds and then say error. I really need help on this because I'm very confused on what to do and I have deadlines to have video work done for companies.
And yesI have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, same problem occured.Try the FCPro forum here:

Log and Transfer Errors with HF10/HF100 AVCHD Cams
Log and transfer will transfer about 80% of clips on the Canon HF10 AVCHD camcorder, but the rest receives a red exclamation icon hovering over which brings the useless explanation box "Unknown Error".
Using My Book Pro II dual HD with data stripping connected via Firewire, no speed issues there. Over 900GB is free on the drive, too. Moreover, copying the BDMV > STREAM > *.MTS structure to a DVD and then running the Log and transfer brings up the same error and nothing is transferred.
The best part is that the same clips transfer just fine using iMovie '08. It is even possible to then import them from the iMovie project folder into Final Cut and then work with them.
Hopefully some smart person has an idea what I could try. Thanks!OK, people. Got a freaking work-around.
Select the clip in the log and transfer window *), then define your IN and OUT points for this clip, THEN hit "Add to Queue". Marked portion of the clip will import nicely. Now we just need full 1980x1020 support. Hopefully an updated FCE soon?
*) Interface of the Log and Transfer window is as beautiful as any Mac app. Why hasn't that interface lift ever made it to the rest of Final Cut? Hopefully, next version. -
Log and transfer error for large avchd file
The log and transfer proces for large (>15 min) avchd MTS files results in an error. The process is aborted and the destination prores 422 file disappears from the finder.
I shoot avchd MTS files with a Sony HXR NX5 onto SDHC 32Gb cards.
I copy the entire image to an attached disk.
In FCP6.0.6 I use log and transfer.
The process works flawlessly for smaller clips.
The longer clips fail.
During the process I see the creation of a ProRes 422 MOV file and its growth. Before completion it ends in an abort.
In the log and transfer dialog I get a red octangle sign with an exclamation mark. I am not able to get the details of the error.
Q: what should I do to be able to use my longer clips?

Have reset all prefs. Currently rerunning an 19 min import (will take over an hour).
If that fails, I will resort to setting ins and outs.
Thinking out loud, my sony NX5 produces MTS files of max 2Gb. If the clip is longer, it is split over multiple files on the SDHC.
FCP seems to recognise this artificial split. In L&T it combines the split files into a single clip.
Q: could it be that L&T stumbles over this artificial split of a clip?

Best way to import MTS (AVCHD)/missing clips using Log and Transfer
My footage (Sony HDR 500) of an average project consists of approximately 10 hours film and 1600 clips. When I use the option Log and Transfer to import in FCE not all clips are imported in FCE. All other clips are consecutively numbered and cannot be compared with the numbering of the clips on the camera anymore. As a result it is, with those large amounts of clips, almost impossible to find out which clips are missing.
Importing takes a very long time (is that normal?) so I would like to run this proces at night, but due to this missing clips problem I am afraid to do this so it is not a good option for me. Does anyone recognize this problem?
To avoid all this I now convert all clips with Voltaic to .mov before importing. At least I know for sure that I have all clips imported, but it is so cumbersome and it takes a lot of time too. This proces I do in steps because I am afraid to start everything at once. After converting the project almost takes 120 GB.
It takes days before everything is imported and that frustrates me. If the same material is imported in Edius for example it only takes an hour (tested) so it appears to be an FCE/Apple problem. Is there any way to accelerate?
I am working with an iMac from 2010, 2,8GHz quadcore i7, 16GB intern geheugen met snow leopard.
I hope someone can help me out.
Thanks, JacquelineWhile I have not seen the exact problem you describe, 1600 clips is a lot of clips to import at once - so is 10 hours of video.
If you are using FCE to Log & Transfer directly from the camera, your clips are automatically being transcoded to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec(AIC) during importing, which explains the long time it takes to ingest the clips.
Also, QT/AIC files are much, much larger than the AVCHD clips in your camera. If you are shooting 1920x1080 video, 10 hours of AVCHD translates into roughly 450GB of QT/AIC clips. It is possible that you may be a) running out of disk space, or b) exceeding the scratch disk minimum allowable free space set in FCE > System Settings. If so, that could explain why not all your clips are being imported - FCE is probably stopping the Log & Transfer process when it hits the disk space limit.
Regarding alternatives, I'm not so sure about Voltaic. The Voltaic documentation says it only supports H.264 in QT/.mov files, and that would not be usable in FCE. Check some of those clips to see what codec they are. I suspect they are H.264. (Also, you referred to the converted clips taking 120GB space, which just happens to match the AVCHD storage capacity of your camera ... and AVCHD is a form of H.264 video, so they take up about the same disk space.)
In order to edit your clips in FCE, they need to be QT/AIC. Two alternatives come to mind - Clipwrap and MPEG Streamclip. Both can convert AVCHD video to QT/AIC, and both support batch conversion. If it were me, I'd consider Clipwrap first, for this volume of material, since Clipwrap was specifically designed for AVCHD.
The reason importing is so much faster in Edius is that it can import & directly edit AVCHD clips; Edius basically just copies the clips from the camera to your hard drive. FCE has to convert the clips to QT/AIC first, before you can edit the video, and that takes considerable time. -
How do I change the location of the coldfusion-out.log and coldfusion-error.log files in CF10
When I change the log location in ColdFusion Administrator it changes the location of most but not all the log files. I have a requirement from my customer to place all log files on a separate partition on the server. For ColdFusion 9 I was able to modify the registry settings to change StandardOut and StandardErr for the ColdFusion Jrun service. This does not appear to the case for ColdFusion 10 which now uses Tomcat 7.
I tried modifying log4j.properties file and was able to relocate the hibernatesql.log, axis2.log, and esapiconfig.log but not the coldfusion-out.log.
I am running ColdFusion 10 Enterprise Edition on a 64-bit Windows 2008 Server.The location of the rest of the ColdFusion logs can be changed in the ColdFusion Administrator. Go to the Debugging and Logging section, Logging Settings. There is a form at the top of the page where you can change the log storage location.

Log and transfer clip setting over clip #100 +
When I selected all clips on log and transfer, they stop at Clip #99. It could not transfer more than #100. I had to rename to a, b, c, etc. Is there any preferance settings to accept over #100? I want to keep them in order.
All cards start with #1? I don't see "#1" anywhere.
I see the clip names, like 0001MS, 0002Z8 and so on. And VOLUME NAME is the name of the card or name of the folder you put the card in. The second card MIGHT start again with 0001, but have another code, like "0001GU, 0002B2" and so on. Because that it the first one on that card. IF a shot spanned from one card to the next, the number scheme would continue, like you are seeing. 0057HW, 0058J9, something to that effect.
This is the way P2 names clips, and there is nothing you can do to change this. Import them, and then rename them...fine.
Are you saying that it can't go beyond shot 100? 0100YU, but no 0101IK? P2 can go to 999.

Log and transfer causes FCP to crash with long clips
Hi. I am trying to import a few 2 hour+ clips using Log and Transfer from my Sony NX5. Once the destination clip has reached approx 60GB, FCP crashes every time. There is plenty of disk space left.
I have tried trashing preferences and also changing scratch disks. I am turned off time machine. I am really worried that I wont be able to get this footage onto my machine.
Any ideas?

This did happen to me again though on yet another project, where the files were around an hour long this time. In the end I got it to work, not sure the solution but tried the following:
- Selected a different easy setup (choose PAL) - this fixed the problem for a colleague of mine, even though it doesn't seem logical
- Used my internal drive as a scratch disk instead of my firewire drive (normally this is not a problem)
I haven't tried this with the really long clips, as Clipwrap saved me.

Log and Transfer cutting clips short
All,
When I attempt to import a clip using Log and Transfer, the total duration of the clip is cut short. FCE usually chops a few seconds off of the end of the clip. I'm really not sure what's going on... it's really frustrating. For example, if the clip is 2 min 15 seconds in the Log and Transfer window, it will only be 2 min and 9 seconds after it has been imported.
Any ideas?

The framerate on the camera is 24 fps. Any idea how I change it in the FCE Sequence? I was doing some reading, and it doesn't look like I can. Not to mention, I came across the disturbing fact that FCE can't edit 24 fps video. Crap!

If the camcorder +does not+ mount on your Desktop your USB port or cable may be malfunctioning. Try plugging it in to another port or using a different USB cable to see if it makes a difference.
If the camcorder does mount on your Desktop but the clips do not appear in the Log and Transfer window you will need to point the program to the directory that contains your media.
First, click the Add Folder button in the upper left of the Log and Transfer window. The button looks like this:
Then, you will need to navigate to the root directory in which your media is stored. Most camcorders call this folder "PRIVATE" or "AVCHD" and it should be located at the very top level of the camcorder when mounted. If your camcorder records to a valid AVCHD directory structure then your clips should load after the Add Folder process is completed.
I would like to keep a working backup of my original clips so that I can delete them off the camcorder's internal memory. How should I do this?
There are two main ways to keep a backup of your clips. The first is to ingest every clip on your camcorder through the Log and Transfer process, and store the Apple Intermediate Codec files the application creates in an easily accessible place such as an external FireWire drive. The advantage of this method is that you have the ability to open back up old editing projects, reconnect the media as necessary, and keep going as if you'd never left. However, due to the large amount of space AIC takes up (usually somewhere in the vicinity of 41-50GB an hour when transcoded from AVCHD), this is not always feasible.
Another often preferable approach is to copy over the root directory in which your clips are stored (usually named "PRIVATE" or "AVCHD") from the camcorder to your computer or an external drive. As long as you maintain the original file structure, you will be able to ingest your clips again at a later date using the "Add Folder" process detailed above to navigate to their new location.
My clips appear, but when I attempt to ingest a red exclamation point appears and the window displays the message "Error: No Data"
This is one of the most common problems that users experience when trying to ingest their media through the Log and Transfer process. Luckily, it also has one of the easiest solutions.
In the Log and Transfer window, click on the gear icon in the top right and select "Preferences" in the contextual menu that appears.
Make sure the video is set to transcode to the Apple Intermediate Codec and the audio is set to Plain Stereo.
After doing so, hit OK and try to ingest again.
I am experiencing a problem that is not covered in this tip or the solutions here do not work.

First, click the Add Folder button in the upper left of the Log and Transfer window. The button looks like this:
Then, you will need to navigate to the root directory in which your media is stored. Most camcorders call this folder "PRIVATE" or "AVCHD" and it should be located at the very top level of the camcorder when mounted. If your camcorder records to a valid AVCHD directory structure then your clips should load after the Add Folder process is completed.
I would like to keep a working backup of my original clips so that I can delete them off the camcorder's internal memory. How should I do this?
There are two main ways to keep a backup of your clips. The first is to ingest every clip on your camcorder through the Log and Transfer process, and store the Apple Intermediate Codec files the application creates in an easily accessible place such as an external FireWire drive. The advantage of this method is that you have the ability to open back up old editing projects, reconnect the media as necessary, and keep going as if you'd never left. However, due to the large amount of space AIC takes up (usually somewhere in the vicinity of 41-50GB an hour when transcoded from AVCHD), this is not always feasible.
Another often preferable approach is to copy over the root directory in which your clips are stored (usually named "PRIVATE" or "AVCHD") from the camcorder to your computer or an external drive. As long as you maintain the original file structure, you will be able to ingest your clips again at a later date using the "Add Folder" process detailed above to navigate to their new location.
My clips appear, but when I attempt to ingest a red exclamation point appears and the window displays the message "Error: No Data"
This is one of the most common problems that users experience when trying to ingest their media through the Log and Transfer process. Luckily, it also has one of the easiest solutions.
In the Log and Transfer window, click on the gear icon in the top right and select "Preferences" in the contextual menu that appears.
Make sure the video is set to transcode to the Apple Intermediate Codec and the audio is set to Plain Stereo.
After doing so, hit OK and try to ingest again.
I am experiencing a problem that is not covered in this tip or the solutions here do not work.

hi. i have a folder structure and i am trying to import on my hard drive via log and transfer. i don't have the original card. I downloaded both the xf utility and the xf transfer. i am on 10.8.6. Each time i am getting the unsupported media error. The folder reads : "AA39" with the contents"AA0399.CIF

all my codecs are up to date. any ideas. thanks.That's not the proper card structure. It needs to look like this. if it doesn't, then you don't have the proper card structure, and FCP will not import the footage. The FULL INTACT card structure is needed in order for FCP to Log and Transfer the footage.

I did a test of various ways to capture footage into FCP. Sorry for saying this again but I’m new to FCP - after 20 some odd years editing with proprietary, Avid and Premiere Pro NLE’s. I mention this [again] because it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks, and some of the bias that I’ve gathered along the way might show up in the way I approached this.
I have four one hour HDV tapes recorded on a Sony HC1; I used the same camera that created the tapes to down convert and capture standard definition NTSC anamorphic DV. Each taped averaged about 70-80 clips.
Tape 1
The first tape I logged the clips using the controls in the log and capture window. Fairly straightforward, but the HC1 was not very responsive to the J/K/L keys and the image in the capture window was very low resolution during scrubbing and searching. This made the process of logging slower than it should be. Once logged, batch capturing was fairly quick [about 1:12:00:00 to capture a 60 minute tape] and pretty much what I expected.
This was not a very efficient way to capture 70-80 clips, a lot of time wasted with pre and post roll. If you had fewer, 20-50 this might be the better way to capture but for what I was doing this was my least favorite way.
Tape 2
After entering the clip information into the log window I hit K key and capture “Now” button and captured the entire tape. I was a little concerned at what would happen when timecode ran out at the end. Nothing happened, it stopped and the clip appeared in the capture bin – all was good.
Once captured I created a custom Browser window with only the columns I wanted to log and make subclips: [following Steve Braker’s instructions]
1) Loaded the master clip into the viewer.
2) Set in and out points for the first clip.
3) Command-U to create a subclip.
4) Re-named the subclip, added description and label.
5) Click in Viewer and
6) Repeated steps 2-5 until 70 clips later it was complete.
Steve suggested deleting or moving the master clip, however checking the folder in the finder where the master clip was store revealed that this process didn’t produce individual clips. Apparently the subclips are simply pointers to the master file so I didn’t delete it.
This process was surprisingly fast but I still ended up with a single file that was approximately 5GB’s which made this process almost useless for working with subclips in Motion2 for example.
Tape 3
Marked an [in and out] in 20 minute intervals to create three master clips for this reel.
1) Loaded the master clip part 1 of 3 into the viewer.
2) In the Mark menu selected DV Start/Stop
3) After FCP placed markers at the scene breaks I “clicked the disclosure triangle” next to the master clip to reveal all of the markers in the Browser.
4) Selected all of the markers to highlight them
5) Chose Modify>Make subclip after which the subclips appeared in the same bin as the master clip and markers [note* at this point I checked my hard drive to find there was still only one contiguous master file for these subclips.
6) Re-named each subclip, added description and label and then placed them in a separate bin and placed the subclips that I didn’t want to keep in a bin to be deleted. [temp trash]
7) Highlighted the subclips that I wanted to convert to Independent clips
8) Chose File>Media Manager
9) Chose Use Existing from the “Media referenced by selected clip” drop down.
10) Selected the “Delete unused media from selected clips.”
11) Chose Clip Names from the “Base media file names on” drop down (Oops, sorry that’s for a PC) pop-up menu.
12) Un-checked the “Duplicate selected clip and place into new project.” This placed the independent clips in the same folder on your hard drive as the master file for the subclips. I suspect although I did not test it that if I had this checked I could choose a different folder?
13) Held my breath and clicked OK!
14) That’s when FCP started treating me like a total idiot “are you sure you want to do this, you’d better be because there’s no going back. Are you really, really sure…” Anyway for me since this is the only project on this machine I didn’t even read the warnings [yes I am an impatient idiot] **** the torpedoes full steam ahead..
15) Done! NOT Quite yet. You’d think that since I un-checked the “Duplicate selected clip and place into new project,” that FCP would be smart enough to place the new clips in my project window. Didn’t happen, had to control click and import files.
This process requires a bit more explanation. I had 16 subclips that I converted to independent clips, after which I deleted all associated subclips and markers. When I imported files there were only seven clips in the folder where the master clips was saved [now deleted as part of this process].
On further inspection all of the footage that I wanted was there, HOWEVER, by using the DV Start/Stop to create markers and then using those markers to create subclips if there are two or more clips with continuous timecode it consolidates them into one contiguous clip thereby defeating the purpose of creating the subclips in the first place. I’m guessing but if I hadn’t deleted some of the subclips I didn’t want to convert I would have ended up with the same large file with a different name.
The manual recommends that you delete the master clip from the Browser before converting the subclips into individual clips. I was suspicious of the need to do this so I left it and after the conversion it did what I expected, became offline. It was a good thing because I could use it to recapture. Also, any logging with description and labels etc is history it is not included in the new independent clip.
Tape 3 Part 2
I won’t bore everyone with going through the steps I’ll just explain how this one was different.
1) I didn’t use the DV Start/Stop option, instead marked I/O separately leaving at least 2 frames between edits to make sure there was discontinuous timecode.
2) I also didn’t bother naming or logging at this point and left whatever ridiculous name the subclip process assigned.
3) The settings in the Media Manager were all set from the previous conversion hit OK [this time read the warnings which would have done nothing to correct the previous attempt].
4) 12 subclips went in and 12 new independent clips came out.
5) Once I had the new clips I logged and added descriptions and labels etc…
Although this sounds like a very convoluted process, and it is certainly much more difficult than it needs to be, by the fourth tape it was predictable and quite fast.
I will say though that because FCP consolidated any continuous clips without warning you really have to pay attention to detail. And it would be nice if we could use the log & capture window for this process so any descriptions, labels etc would be carried forward to the new clip.
Certainly not as easy to accomplish as it is in PPro but definitely possible. There might be more functionality that I just missed, if so please let me know. Anything that can be done to simplify this would be helpful.
Mac Pro. 5GB RAM. 1TB SATAII RAID 0. Mac OS X (10.4.8) FCP 5.1.2When you delete the master clip from the browser, you aren't deleting the media file it referenced. So the subclips reference that same original captured QT movie, it's just not in your project.
It will work. try it. It's how I've been working for about 6 years now. I don't have problems with subclips at all doing anything I want to with them.
Subclips are nothing more than reference files that reference a portion of a master clip. A Master clip is nothing more than a reference to the media file that you're capturing... it's not the media it's a reference to it.
Subclips are how FCP was really intended to be logged I think. I don't like long captures at all, and would prefer to actually capture the way you did the first time... but because it takes longer, I usually don't have time to do things that way. However, if you do things that way, you can add descriptions etc. to the logged clip in the Log and Capture window, if that helps your workflow.
The responsivness you lack with your HDV camera is because it's HDV... HDV doesn't contain all of the pixels of every frame, so to see a single frame the computer has to do a lot of processing to show it to you. It's an MPEG stream, which uses whole frame information every 8 or 15 frames only. The rest of the frames are the difference between the frames only on the recorded tape, thus the work and slow response to HDV logging and capturing.
P2 on the other hand, would make ALL of this MUCH easier to deal with. For one thing, each take is an individual file, and it's an all I frame format so it's easier for the computer to deal with. It renders 8 times faster than HDV does... no "conforming" necessary.

FCP7 Log and Transfer, Unsupported Media . . .
Last night I used two different SDHC cards in my Canon Vixia HFS100. FCP7 will import clips via Log and Transfer from one, but not the other. It just ignores everything on it (but I have 1.4 GB of recordings on it).
When I copy the card to a hard drive and point Log and Transfer to that folder, I get the message "CANON contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure"
Before using this card, I did a full initization of the card. I compared the directory structures of the two. They appear identical. I haven't messed with either in the Finder.
How do I tell what is wrong? How do I fix it? Or should I just try converting with something like Voltaic? I'm an FCP beginner. So, I would rather not stray too far from its work flow.

1) make sure there are no still images
2) make sure there is no non-hd video (log and transfer works with AVCHD HD video clips, not MPEG SD clips)
3) if possible, all the hd video clips should be of one quality/size/format setting
4) in the log and transfer window, click on the gear shaped icon in the top center of the screen to set the Log and Transfer Preferences:
Set the Import Preferences for AVCHD to Plain Stereo:
Click OK, then restart FCP, reconnect the camera and try again.
