Clipping paths inverting in CS3

I see that this has been discussed previously, (http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c05af0b/12) but the topic is now archived so I wondered if there are any new thoughts on the matter.
Images with clipping paths that work perfectly in CS and CS2 are coming into CS3 with the path inverted. The clipping paths are set up correctly in Photoshop, so it's not the paths that need to be fixed. Now I know that a simple fix is to go into Photoshop and create a mask using the path, but we work on catalogues with hundreds of images that are supplied to us with clipping paths - seemingly standard practice for the image libraries that are supplying the images.
Our catalogues/mailers are weekly productions so we have 5 on the go at any one time and that means a lot of images - up to 300 for each publication. Thankfully it doesn't affect every image!
I can't determine why it happens to some and not others, but it is definitely frustrating. We also have to redownload the images for each publication, so we end up fixing the same image over and over again. This is a consequence of how the image libraries that we are working with operate - we are not allowed to keep a copy of the images.
Has anyone come across a way around this, other than editing in Photoshop? Any suggestions gratefully received.
Steve
Indesign CS3, 10.5.4 on 3.06GHz Intel iMacs

Yes the images that invert are RGB, but then so are the ones that work perfectly - and all of them worked OK in CS2.
And yes, the path is set as 'subtract from shape area' - and THAT appears to be the difference between ones that work and ones that don't work...so what does that mean? Again, all the images worked fine in CS2.
Does it mean that CS3 (Photoshop/Indesign) is messing up the paths, or does it mean that CS2 (Photoshop/Indesign) was more forgiving? Unfortunately we no longer have CS2 installed so I can't test that.
Even though it is fairly simple to fix, and there are various ways to fix it, the problem still remains the amount of images that are affected and that we can't make a permanent fix to the images. next time we re-download them from the image libraries we will need to fix them again.
Perhaps I need to flag the problem images to the image libraries, but I want to be sure of my facts first.
Thanks for the input guys.

  • Clipping Path Inverted

I have created a clipping path correctly on Photoshop. When I place it into InDesign CS3, the path is inverted. I have to choose the clipping path option in InDesign, I have to check the invert path checkbox.
Seems to be the same behavior using eps or jpeg.
    Behavior is correct in Quark
    Ideas ?

No, you didn't. You created the path in a way that says "I do not want to see the face".
I don't know how you did this, but you did.

  • CS2 clipping paths incompatible with CS3 indesign

    Hi there
I need to use photoshop images with clipping paths that were created in photoshop CS2 in a indesign CS3 doc (working on a mac OS X 10.5.4). I import the image ok, the trouble is every time I try to activate the clipping path I get the spinning wheel of doom and the application stops responding.
The image opens up fine in CS3 photoshop, there only seems to be a problem with the path itself which I've tried copying onto other images which I know work and it does the same thing with them.
I used the image in indesign CS2 as a test and it worked properly, which is why I think the 2 packages are incompatible.... oddly enough, I'm using some really old images which were created before CS was a glint in the milkmans eye and they work perfectly.
Does anybody know a way around this, or indeed if this is a bug or something?
    Thanks

It is a bug but Adobe fixed it.
If you want to use EPS files with clipping paths, that is fine, but be aware that there were problems that InDesign recovered from about 2 years ago. I wrestled through that time with many problems with clipping and have lots of documentation I never want to drag out again.
The thing is to have everything updated. Files that were saved will not be fixed by copying paths, you need to re-save the files in an up-to-date version of Photoshop by doing 'save as' to overwrite.
Sorry you're having this problem, it stinks but was remedied in updates. Try one file that you know doesn't work and do the save-as to see if that fixes it. Open and save in the latest CS3 version of course.
Get rid of your CS2 InDesign. Use CS3 only.

  • CS3 Inverting a Clipping Path

Is there a way to invert a clipping path when you goof and you make the clipping path of the outside accidently instead of the inside? Thanks.

Type "A" then select the path. Make sure the anchors are visible.

  • Bridge CS3 Stripping Clipping Path Names

Whenever editing the metadata in a .psd file, whether it be through a script or manually typing it in, Bridge CS3 strips the file's clipping path names. Howeer, running the same script in Bridge CS2 and performing the manual metadata changes leaves the path names intact. Does anyone know why the path names are being removed and how to prevent it? Thanks.
The metadata fields that I wish to edit are: Title, Instructions, Headline, City, State, Date, and Country.

Wow, it's good to know that someone else had the same problem too.
I noticed this very same problem with my PSD files today. My clipping paths were all named until I decided to add a keyword to the file using Bridge CS3. When I opened the file, I noticed that all my clipping path names were gone!
At first I didn't realize that it was Bridge CS3 that altered the clipping path names (I thought I accidentally hit a short cut I wasn't supposed to)... but after opening another file (with even MORE clipping path names), I realized that it was probably Bridge CS3 that was problem. I tested the issue a couple more times with new files, and the same thing happened.
Now, this is a question for David Franzen, have you guys found the issue and fixed it? Also, do you have any answers on preventing this (other than not using the metadata feature in CS3 for my PSD files)?
I guess I won't be using Bridge CS3 in the way I wanted to until this is resolved.
If this information helps at all, I'm currently using an Intel-based MacPro and running CS3.3.

  • Missing Menu items - (Clipping Paths) InDesign CS3

I've logged this before but had no success. However - I now know what's causing my problem.
Ever since CS2, we've had a problem with missing clipping paths. We get the same in CS3 where Object>Clipping Path loses the 2 sub menus (Options and Convert Clipping Path to Frame). This problem seems to be on the increase and I'm having to fix about 10 per week on a base of 200 machines.
If I log on to the faulty machine as a different user then it's OK (so it has to be preferences - doesn't it?). I don't want to delete prefs as we have certain settings which we want to keep. And then I discover that if I simply replace the InDesign contents in Applications, it fixes the problem.
Because this is a very quick fix, and production being production, I didn't get time to work on the problem. But eventually I got a clone of a failed machine and was able to get to the problem.
    Domain/(domain name)/Users/(Users name)/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/InDesign SavedData.
If I move this file between machines, I can move the fault around. If I bin the file, it gets recreated and all is OK.
From what I've been able to discover, a combination of SavedData and InDesign Defaults make up the InDesign Prefs.
So, the question is: what problems could I generate by binning SavedData every time a user logs on to the machine??
As an aside - I thought initially that the SavedData file was giving the error when it reached 11.4 Meg, but then I find machines with 12 Meg files which were OK!

"binning"? Is that like deleting or throwing out the trash?
If so, I see no ill effect from deleting the 'saved data' file. Only if InD crashed last time it ran, you will lose the recovery of the last document(s). Deleting the other preferences or defaults will only reset InD to its factory defaults. If you have settings like special hyphenation, object or paragraph styles, preferences for workspaces or toolbars in single column or layout of pallets, you will lose those.

  • Converting tif with clipping path to solid spot color CS3

There must be a better way to do this, I need to make an opaque white spot color overprint the silo'd 4/C image (this is for a window cling). In the past I would duplicate the tif, convert to grayscale, fill with black, duplicate the placed tif, re-link to the new grayscale tif and color it to the spot color. This works fine, but is there a way to simply duplicate the placed tif, delete the image and fill the path with a spot color? TIA

Absolutely. First copy the image and then paste in place. Right click and choose convert clipping path to frame. Delete the image from that frame and fill it with color.

  • [CS3] Clipping Path Options Zero Out?

    Hi:
I'm posting this for a couple of users in my studio (haven't actually experienced it myself).
They swear that they occasionally place an EPS and in Object/Clipping Path they select the type: Photoshop Path and choose a path.
Then, for no apparent reason, the type swings from "Photoshop Path" to "None".
I tend to think this is actually occurring when they drag a bunch of images from one document to another (these two operators work on a monthly catalog where a lot of art carries forward). Still, I don't understand why a clipping path option would change.
Anyone else experience this behavior? (Please, no rants on how we should stop using EPS -- we are moving as quickly as possible to psds wtih transparencies, but I've got a ton of images with both "tight to image" clippling paths and "drop shadow" clipping paths so it isn't that easy).
    Thanks.
    --jon

    Bob:
In the studio everyone has Intel MacPros with 4GB of RAM -- up in Creative land, there's still a lot of old 1.8GHz G5s kicking around that just die when the ADs are working with a catalog with dozens of hi-rez images. (The more junior ADs with the crappy G5s get stuck with the print work while the senior guys who spend all their time in broadcast editing suites have Intels they use for email and web surfing -- makes no sense to me). Also, the ADs involve complain bitterly at the time it takes to print a catalog out with hi-rez art.
So, we stage the hi-rez art on a Xinet volume, give them access to the FPO volume (Xinet automatically creates and imbeds a low-rez proxy of anything that's thrown on the hi-rez volume) and that's what they use in their comps. When the comps transition to the studio, we simply re-link the art to their hi-rez versions.
We only do this on the big monthly projects -- everyday ads and direct mail pieces are handled as you describe.

  • Clipping Paths not coming through a few times

Our newspaper recently upgraded our system from OS9/Quark 4.11 to OS Leopard 10.5.4/InDesign CS3. The transition for the most part has been smooth. A glitch that has popped up is about 1 in 20 clipping path images that are created in Photoshop CS3 lose the path when printing the InDesign document to a pdf page. Sometimes the missing path will show in the pdf when reprinting and reDistilling. There are four work stations, all with identical 24" iMacs, software and settings. Any suggestions to solve this mystery?

I am having a similar problem. I silo the image in photoshop that needs multiple paths. When I place the image in InDesign i lose the inner path on a couple places but the outer path is in place. We tried this on another Mac in Photoshop and it worked fine. Any ideas anyone???
I'm having the same issue. Also, the paths that *do* come through are inverted, so I'm having to invert those through InDesign to ensure that the actual object that the path was around is importing, other than the background of the image.
Lisa, did you ever find a solution to this?

    Hey guys,
I would like to determine if there is any paths or clipping paths in the files dropped onto the droplet. Then sort them into different folders. • How do I get clipping paths to work in PhotoShop CS5?

I've always used clipping paths to pull-out parts of images that I then save as eps files and bring into other images.
For some reason, I can't get CS5 PS to capture only the path I created, instead it continues to capture the entire image.
I normally create a path with the pen tool, save the path, identify it with the Clipping Path from the dropdown, then save out as an EPS. Has worked thousands of times for me in previous versions of PhotoShop, but not with CS5.
Anyone else encounter this problem or have a solution?

Ok, I did that but it's still reacting the same way. So I need to start from scrtach and build a new path? That can't b

  • Why is the JPG missing its clipping path when opening in Illustrator?

I need to be able to create jpg images images in photoshop with a clipping mask so that my clients can open the files in their own programs with a transparent (not solid white) background.   I thought I used to be able to do this.   But now when I open the jpg files in my own Illustrator program, it doesn't have the clipping path.  I can resave the jpgs as eps files, and the path comes through just fine, but many of my clients can't use eps files and the file sizes of eps files are way too big.   I've tried saving the jpg files and opening them up in CS3 and CS6 photoshop/illustrator programs.   The clipping path is still in the jpg files when I open them in photoshop;   they just seem to disappear when I open the files in Illustrator.
Is there a way to keep the clipping path in a jpeg file when using it in Illustrator?

JPG files cannot have a clipping path. Save as a PNG file from Photoshop for a transparent background.

  • What's the fastest way to create a clipping path?

In CS3 & 4 I've created a bazillion clipping paths via pen tool and mouse. I've also tried using the various selection tools to create selections, then turning those selections into paths and modifying the path. I've roughed in paths then zoomed way up to fine tune them.
Is there any plug-in or other slick method to create clipping paths real quickly? Maybe a Wacom pen would work quicker than a mouse? I haven't tried that. I've tried everything else I can think of.
I happened to notice there are online services that charge like $2.00 to create a clipping path for you. So that either has to be from slave labor or someone has figured out a real fast way to do it.
I'm sorry to repeat a question if it's been answered before.  I searched for clipping paths in the Photoshop forum and Adobe returned 0 results.

A Wacom tablet is a must. If you are doing lots of clipping paths, avoid carpel-tunnel, and get the work done easier and faster using the Wacom. I've tried all the sizes and I use a 4x5 because it's all the real estate you need, even on 30" monitors. Other than that, there is no software that thinks like a human can in making discretionary choices. Just get the Wacom and roll. You'll have that pen tool motating at full throttle and even make the labor enjoyable.
Be sure to take your customary 20 minute ergonomic breaks to let your eyes focus and +20 feet away.
    Best,
    Ken

  • Converted clipping path to frame (InDesign CS2)

I am working with files where the person has converted clipping paths to frames for the images. I need to resize the images but it leaves a blank silhouette of the hollowed out space (where the image was) and a view in the background of the full image, including the background. I'm new to InDesign and need to find out how to resize these images or how to undo the convert clipping path to frame. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

How are you trying to resize the frames now? Try Pressing Ctrl + Shift BEFORE you click the mouse on a sizing handle and drag. (you shouldn't need to press the keys first, but there was a bug in CS3 and I think it may still be in CS4 on the Windows platform).
You can also use the scale tool (hold shift to size proportionally) or use the SCALE fields -- the third set from the left, not the second set which are height and width of the frame only -- on the control panel or in the transform panel. These scale both content and container together.
By default the scale fields will say 100% after any transformation, and ID expects you to input percentage values in them and interprets numbers without units as per cent, but you can enter any value you like as long as you specify the units, so you can put 3in into the width field and the frame will become 3 inches wide. Scaling using the control panel is relative to the control point in the proxy on the left end, so if you select the upper left point, the upper left point of the bounding box will remain stationary and everything else will move toward or away from that.

  • Clipping path automatically appearing

    Hi,
I have an art figure that was created in Illustrator without a clipping path.  However, somehow when that art figure was saved as a black and white version, pieces of it were grouped and all of a sudden it has a clipping path tracing the artboard.  This is creating problems because the original color version is seen by InDesign as a certain size, and then when we relink to the black and white version, it shrinks the art to accommodate the clipping path.
Anyone know how this is happening and/or how to keep it from occurring? COuld it be that the document was created in CS4 and then opened in CS3?
    Thanks

    You are welcome, liscola.
You should be aware that using new features in a newer version may lead to loss/deterioration of the actual contents when downsaving; some losses may be less obvious.
In some cases, you may have to Expand to make things survive.
I believe new features that may cause trouble from CS4 to CS3 include gradients with transparency, graphic styles, multiple artboards, and the blob brush.
