Clippings in AppleWorks 6

I have been using the seach feature in the clippings for years and love it! Suddenly it isn't showing the graphics when I do a search. The dialogue box appears that indicates that the search is happening and show the number of matches found but none of them appear in the clippings box...HELP!

Hello
Just a sample.
In my AW5 folder there is a subfolder entitled "Clippings".
One of the stored library file is entitled: Animals.
I put a COPY on the desktop and renamed it Animals5
Then, I moved the file in the AW6's Clippings folder.
Then re-start AW6.
Create a new doc.
menu "File > Show Clippings"
I see a new locked TAB entitled "Animals5".
I may use the items embedded in this TAB but can't edit the TAB's content.

  • Appleworks 7? or at least a guarantee of support for years to come..

I have to tell you that the clipart gallery alone (clippings) makes Appleworks such an easy to use tool. One fear I have its that Apple will stop supporting Appleworks via the online gallery etc. As a creator of educational websites (check out my signature below) and as a teacher who constantly creates documents, I fear that I am often evangelical for something that might just cease to exist. I sould also tell you that I use Appleworks on the Windows platform as well as the Mac platform. I did a search of this forum and saw no mention of Appleworks 7. Am I right? Does Apple know how many of use Appleworks this present time?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You wouldn't see discussion of an Appleworks 7 in this forum unless there was one already existing. Note the terms of use specifically forbid rumors and speculation. Also you can't discuss Apple policy. You can of course suggest feedback to Apple on what you'd like to see in iWork here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/pages.html
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/keynote.html
Whether or not Apple knows how many people are using Appleworks, that's only anyone's guess. This is a user to user forum. While Appleworks does run on Intel Macs just fine with its version 6.2.9 in Mac OS X, it doesn't come with them. Apple did stop including Appleworks with all Macs with the advent of Intel Macs in 2006. I won't speculate what it means, but you can take it and Barry's remarks for what they are worth.

  • Apple Education Please Note

I gather from AWUG that 'clippings' is no longer available.
This is a kind of disaster as I am a lecturer and instead of 'death by powerpoint' as its known by students, I make simple pdfs with a minimum of text and a little picture from clippings. Its fast, efficient and far more pleasant and interactive than a mass of grey text which is typical of ppt. I just don't have time to faff around looking for clip art, it may sound easy but its time consuming and time is of the essence in my job. Apple Education please note.

Apple doesn't read these forums for feedback. Since there has never been a feedback page for AppleWorks the suggestion was to post to the main Apple feedback page.
However, since AppleWorks was declared end-of-life back in August, 2007, any feedback about it will fall on deaf ears. End-of-life means no more development, bug fixes or any support by the developer. Those who use AppleWorks are fortunate that it continues to work as OS X advances. But the "writing is on the wall." With each system update AppleWorks develops more & more glitches. It is long since time to find another option. I don't use them, but a couple of programs that come with built-in clip art are Swift Publisher by Belight Software & Print Shop. IMO, even Print Shop has much better quality clip art than the online clippings of AppleWorks.

  • Replacement for Appleworks Clippings

Does Pages have a replacement for Appleworks Clippings? If so, where do I find it? And better still, does it have an equivalent to Word's AutoText feature, with drop-down picklists?
    Cheers, Simon

    You might look into EazyDraw.
It's reported able to open AppleWorks Draw documents, and the "Draw" name would indicate it handles vector drawings.
That would save at least one step in the process.

  • AppleWorks 5 Library to AppleWork 6 Clippings

At work we have a coloured iMac (OS 9) with AppleWorks 5.
I like the Library (clip art) which it has.
Is it possible to transfer/copy the Libray contents into Clippings (AppleWorks 6) on an intel iMac? There is no firewire on the early iMac. It is not on a network or internet connected, and no CD burner. But I do have the original CDs with the Application on it.
All help gratefully received, simple steps please!

    From the AppleWorks 6 Help:
To add a folder of items to Clippings (such as a ClarisWorks 5 or AppleWorks 5 library folder):
    • In the Finder desktop, drag the folder to the Clippings folder (in the AppleWorks 6 folder). AppleWorks 5 libraries must remain at the main level of the Clippings folder.
The AppleWorks 5 Libraries added this way will be locked tabs meaning you can't add to them in AppleWorks 6, but each item will be available.
The other way to transfer these clips is very time-consuming. You would need to place each clip in an AppleWorks 5 document, draw is best, & you can use one for each Library. Then open the AW 5 document in AppleWorks 6 & select each item, one at a time, & add them to the AppleWorks 6 clippings. You would likely want to re-name them as well.

  • Replacement for Appleworks clippings organizer

My dear mother loves Appleworks, and is a devout user of its clippings feature. She has over 1000 clippings in there right now, and is dreading the OS update that will disable Appleworks to the point that it no longer becomes useable.
Has anyone found a more recent compatible application or way to export such a collection of images such that she will still be able to retrieve, edit and add to them?
I have found nothing out there that does this on a mass scale - the closest is the one-by-one manual method of placing the clipping into an Appleworks document, copying it from there to the clipboard and pasting that into your image organizer of choice. Not only would this be very tedious, but the image format conversion process involved means the resulting extracted graphics no longer scale well.
    Any advice is much appreciated.

    You might look into EazyDraw.

  • Cannot open Appleworks at all

When I try to open Appleworks it doesn't do anything. It pretends like it will open but then doesn't. I can't tell where it is getting hung up. I tried to use Peggy's advice and delete the preferences but that didn't work. I don't have it on my dock. Any help would be great. Thanks!

For others reference this is the original post I started with from Peggy..
--The best, first step in trouble-shooting a misbehaving application is to delete its preference files. Preference files often become corrupted through no fault of the user - it just happens. Although it sounds scary or drastic to do this, it can only help the application. When any application is launched, it looks for its preference files. If it doesn't find any (just like the very first time you started AppleWorks) it will build new ones.
First, quit AppleWorks if it is running. In all instances, you don't want to trash the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bar. You will need to reset any preferences you had changed, but AppleWorks' preferences are simple.
]•In OS X you want to move the AppleWorks preferences found in HD/Users/username/Library/Preferences/AppleWorks & the com.apple.appleworks.plist found in ~/Library/Preferences/ to the Trash, then empty the Trash & restart AppleWorks.
]•In OS 8-9, the preference files to Trash are found in HD/System Folder/Preferences/AppleWorks. Then empty the Trash & restart AppleWorks.
Should AppleWorks still not work as before or expected, the next step is to make sure AppleWorks and the necessary support files are installed and where AppleWorks "expects" to find them.
]It is not uncommon for users to move the AppleWorks application from the AppleWorks 6 folder to a more convenient location, separating it from its necessary folders - AppleWorks Essentials, Clippings & Starting Points. The AppleWorks 6 application & the above mentioned folders must be in a folder named AppleWorks 6. Not keeping all these "parts" together will
"break" translators, spell check, updaters, etc. If you do want to have AppleWorks available in another spot, make an alias from the File menu and put the alias wherever you'd like. You can even have several aliases.
]If you cannot find all of the "parts" or have inadvertently deleted some, you will need to reinstall AppleWorks using the "Easy Install" option. There is no need to remove the existing AppleWorks files, the installer will merely install what is missing. --
I am quite puzzled by the fact that my harddrive is full. I use the laptop mainly for the internet. I am a stay at home mom so I don't have huge data on my computer. I guess it came with like 60 G and I only have about 4 left. That is crazy to me. Where did it all go??? I have about a years worth of pictures and maybe 100 songs but the only program I have added is the full version of photoshop which isn't even a Gig. I seriously have saved maybe 20 documents on this thing. I run Quicken and use the calender but it just seems so crazy that it would be full already!!!!

  • Appleworks won't save DB file as ASCII

My AppleWorks Database won't save the file as an ASCII (for export) Save As, only offers AppleWorks and Claris Works options. I know in the past ASCII was an option, but for some reason no longer?
    I am running AW 6.2.9 on a PowerPC G5 running 10.5.8.

Did you move the AppleWorks application from the AppleWorks 6 folder, separating it from its necessary folders - AppleWorks Essentials, Clippings & Starting Points? The AppleWorks 6 application & the above mentioned folders must be in a folder named AppleWorks 6 & this folder must be at the first level of the Applications folder. Not keeping all these "parts" together will break translators, spell check, updaters, etc.

  • Installing AppleWorks 6 on my laptop (moving it from my Desktop)

I would like to install AppleWorks6 on my 13" Intel MacBook. I plan to copy the application from my desk top to a CD or memory stick and install it on the laptop. Besides the actual application are there any other files I need to transfer? Will AppleWorks even work on my laptop? Thanks.

The only things you might want to move are any templates or clippings you have save in Documents > AppleWorks User Data & the Button Bar Preferences found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences > AppleWorks. Do not move any other preferences or the plist file. Let AppleWorks create brand new one when you first launch AppleWorks on your new portable. I think using a CD for the transfer is best. It give you a backup of the AppleWorks 6 folder & the other things you may also want to move. Make sure you copy the whole AppleWorks folder, not just the application. To remain within the Apple software license you should then remove AppleWorks from the previous computer.

  • AppleWorks 6.2.9 still quits - request more help from Peggy and Barry

    Appleworks6 will not launch
Thanks to Peggy and Barry I am further along in getting AppleWorks 6, release 6.2.9 to work. However, things are still not working.
Peggy, I took your suggestion from my last post (Feb 18-19)about dragging the AppleWorks 6 application from the AppleWorks 6 folder to the Dock. Now when I click once on the AppleWorks 6 icon, the application just bounces once. The menu at the top of the desktop stays on the Finder menu.
Let me give you some more information about the iMac setup, because I followed your suggestions about removing Recent Items files. This did not resolve the problem for getting the AppleWorks 6 application to start.
I have the AppleWorks 6 folder as:
    Mac HD>applications>AppleWorks 6
    In the Appleworks 6 folder
    AppleWorks 6 application
    Late-Breaking News folder – 2 items
AppleWorks Essentials folder – 9 items
    Clippings folder – 14 items
Starting Points folder – 5 items
AppleWorks 6 Installer log written with TextEdit– dated 12/11/04
On Mac HD/Users/userfile/LibraryPreferences – no file for com.apple.AppleWorks.plist
Under Mac HD>Documents>AppleWorks User Data folder
There are three folders: AutoSave, Starting Points, Clippings
    AutoSave folder has zero items
Starting Points folder – has three folders: Cache, Disabled Items, Recent Items
    Cache – three folders
    Folder 484B1CeC32D183Dba11d8c00b40954
    Header.cache dated Dec 21/2004
    Templates6-1cwk.gz 0GZIP file
    Folder 86B7AA87566C7DBA41B2D8825E0724
    Containing header.cache
    And newsletter6-1.cwk.gz
    Folder D1F3FFE1…
    Containing header.cache
    and extras6.cwk.gz
Disabled Items folder – containing zero items
Recent Items folder – containing zero items
    Clippings folder
    Cache folder -0 items
Disabled Items folder – 0 items
Also, on Mac HD>SystemFolder>Preferences>AppleWorks – AppleWorks 6 Button Bars and file called AppleWorks 6 Preferences and AppleWorks 6 Fonts
Should I delete the Mac HD>Documents>AppleWorks User Data\Starting Points folder and the Mac HD>Documents>AppleWorks User Data\Clippings folder? Wouldn’t the AppleWorks 6 application then pick up the correct Starting Points and Clippings folders from Mac HD>applications>Appleworks 6 folder?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

Does AppleWorks launch if you double-click the icon in the Finder? It may be an OS issue rather than an AppleWorks one. So, the first thing I suggest is repairing permissions using Disk Utility. Then, unless you leave your Mac on 24/7 & not asleep, run a utility to run the UNIX cron routines & clean caches. Try a search on MacUpdate or VersionTracker for maintenance utilities such as OnyX or Yasu.
Also, make sure your hard drive isn't too full. It depends on how you use your computer, but for most normal users a minimum of 5 gigs free space at all times after installation is recommended. Power users may need more.
If this still doesn't work, repairing your hard drive with Disk Utility may help. Start up your Mac from the first Panther (10.3.x) install disk. Then, instead of running the installer, go to the Installer menu & choose Disk Utility. Select your hard drive in the left-hand panel & click Repair Disk. When it is done, quit Disk Utility then quit Installer & restart your Mac.
It certainly won't hurt to delete both of the AppleWorks User Data folders. One is for OS 9/Classic & the other, in your documents folder, is for OS X. Actually, there would be one in each user's documents folder if you have more than one user.

  • Appleworks not opening

hello. i'll try to make up for my only other (rather hasty) post...hopefully this will be coherent enough to elicit a solution!
here's a general timeline of my problem– hopefully someone can see a flaw or step i've missed:
i've used appleworks for as long as i've owned a mac. i even cut my WP teeth on a later version of clarisworks before appleworks came out.
at the moment i'm using appleworks 6 education version (updated recently to 6.2.9). approx. 6 mos. ago, i began having problems w/the application unexpectedly quitting when i tried to search in clippings. that was remedied when i reinstalled appleworks completely.
most recently (this week) it's been the problem of simply not opening, giving me an error stript. i thought the app was due for an update, and moved it up to 6.2.9. shortly after that, i was able to open documents (for only 2days).
i've spent a day or so (maybe not extensive enough) searching the forum for this problem. i found first Dale Gillard's tutorial "appleworks slow?…" and followed its advice to clean out recent items and such.
i do a permissions repair every so often, and did so after that just for safety's sake.
    still no go.
i then gave Peggy's tutorials a try, deleting users/etc…/prefrences (appleworks folder & plist). i checked the support files, which were all as they should be, the application still in the correct folder with them.
after all that, i tried to open appleworks again, but it was so agitated by then it didn't even give me the courtesy of an error message, it simply didn't open.
this is my primary (and fav.) WP program; i don't want (REALLY don't) to settle for Word:Mac (apologies to those who use it...)
    thanks!

i can't open appleworks at all. i want to try to
delete the bauhas 93 fonts how do i do that?
    Hi kelly,
Welcome to the discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
You'll have Bauhaus 93 installed only if you have installed (or run) Microsoft Office on your computer. It's an older version of that font that's corrupted, so if your machine came with Tiger (OS X 10.4.x) installed,it's unlikely you have a corrupt version of Baujaus 93.
If a corrupt font is the problem, AppleWorks will begin the startup process, and will quit with "Building font menu" showing at the bottom left of it's startuo ('splash') screen.
I suspect one of the other issues mentioned in this thread is to blame. Which one would be indicated by a detailed description of what happens when you try to start AppleWorks, and the exact situation at the point at which AW quits.
    Regards,
    Barry
PS: To your question of how to delete Bauhaus 93: Go to the Finder, press command-F, enter "bauhaus" (without the quotes) in the search box, click on the file in the list that appears, then (at the bottom of the Find window) double click the last folder before the font name.
In the open folder window, click and drag the Bauhaus 93 file to the Trash.

  • CANNOT Open AppleWorks 6 application

    Hello,
    URGENT SITUATION:
I have been using this application for some time and lately it stared acting strange, and now tells me "You cannot open the application AppleWorks 6 because it may be damaged or incomplete".
I have no idea what I could have done to damage it, or what that means. I do know that my computer probably has too much memory in use but all my other applications work OK. I also have many files using AW6. Please help me, this data is very important!
    Thank you, Rhino123

    Hi Rhino,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
If the error message is to be believed, it would appear that your AppleWorks application file has become damaged. Before reinstalling it from the installation disk(s) that came with your (pre intel) Mac Mini, try these basic trouble-shooting steps:
    1. Have you moved the AppleWorks 6 application out of the AppleWorks 6 folder? If so, move it back to that folder.
The AppleWorks 6 folder should be at top level inside the Applications folder on your hard drive, and must contain the application, and the AppleWorks Essentials, Clippings and Starting Points folders. There may be other items in this folder, but these 4 are essential.
    2. A common cause of AppleWorks not working correctly (or not working at all) is corrupted preferences files (although this does not usually generate the alert you reported). In the Finder, go to Mac HD > Users > yourname > Library > Preferences
Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist
Find and open the AppleWorks folder at this location. Delete the two cache files and the preferences file it contains. If you have made changes to the Button Bar, you may wish to keep that file, otherwise delete it as well. AppleWorks will create new, clean copies of these files as they are needed.
    3. Another common cause of AppleWorks slowing significantly or failing to launch is the Recent Items bug. (Again, this bug does not usually generate the alert you report.) AppleWorks is sensitive to the number of items in the Recent Items folder it keeps for each user. In the Finder, go to Mac HD > Users > yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items.
Delete all or most of the items in this folder. The items are aliases to files you have saved. Deleting them has no effect on the actual file.
If none of these helps, I would suggest reinstalling AppleWorks from your original disks. Note that a reinstall does NOT replace or repair files outside the AppleWorks 6 folder.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Cannot open Appleworks documents

    Hi,
I hope this is an easy fix. I clicked on the Appleworks icon in the dock and it disappeared. Went to the MacIntosh HD icon and clicked. Clicked on documents, and I see each on each appleworks icon, beside the titled document, a symbol similar to the "previous page/next page" box in the upper left corner of the screen. When I click on the appleworks icon to open the document, I get the message "there is no default application to open the document "(title of the document).cwk". Wants me to choose another application. Don't know what that means. Tried to update appleworks and "updater was unable to find an installation of appleworks to update in the specific update location". Don't know how appleworks suddenly became inacessible.
Thank you for any help you can offer.

"I have AppleWorks 6 folder in applications -- see mostly photos or pictures and some AppleWorks tools, but don't find AppleWorks 6.app. "
The only things that should be in Applications > AppleWorks 6 should be items that the AppleWorks installer put there when AppleWorks was installed on your hard drive (most likely at the factory, since yours is an eMac).
    These include:
    AppleWorks Web Site
    AppleWorks Essentials
    AppleWorks Extras
    AppleWorks Extra Fonts
    Starting Points
    Late-breaking News
    Clippings
    AppleWorks Users Group
    AppleWorks 6 Documentation
    AppleWorks 6
All are folders, except for AppleWorks 6 (the application package) and AppleWorks Web Site (a web address document). They'll be listed in a different order than here.
Anything else in the AppleWorks 6 folder is likely something that you, or another user, has put there. Storing user's files in an application folder is generally a bad idea. User's files tend to be files that are moved around and occasionally deleted. Opening an Applcation's folder to delete anything opens the possibility of accidently deleting anything else in the folder, including the application itself. That may be what's happened here.
If AppleWorks has indeed been dleted from your hard drive, the next step is to reinstall it, then update the installed version to AW 6.2.9. Installation is done from the original Install disk(s) that came with your eMac. Instructions on doing that can be found in a couple of documents in Apple's Knowledge Base. You'll find links to both in this post by Peggy.

    Barry

  • Aw 5 Libraries and AW 6 Clippings

I have several projects for my students in Gr 4 that uses AW 5 and the libraries. I liked the libraries in AW5 in that they were grouped objects and the students could take them apart and use them in their drawings. For example in the campground "clipping" there were pine trees that they could use in other landscapes that they created. Now that AW6 is the Application being used, my students cannot create their neat pictures since the new clippings are silly little GIFs. There is no way that I have discovered, short of making a folder with all of the AW5 Libraries by copying and pasting them all into AW drawing docs, that I can get them into AW6 Clippings WITHOUT THEM BECOMING GIFS. Anyone have any suggestions? Apple went a step backward in this regard.

    Hi Robert,
I'm mystified. The AW 6 Clippings in my Clippings folders (both AW 6.2.9 International English, as installed on this machine, and AW 6.2.9, originally installed as the version current with the last G3 iMacs, updated, and dragged to this machine) are Grouped objects when placed in an AppleWorks document. One problem your Grade 4s may have (mine certainly did!) is that the pieces in the new clippings tend to be smaller that those in the Library items, making them more difficult to move around without accidently dragging a handle.
To use the AW 5 libraries, just drag the libraries into the Clippings folder, then launch AppleWorks. Each library will appear as a separate, locked tab in Starting Points. Once you've set it up on one machine, you should be able to copy the whole clippings folder to your file server (or to a sneaker net CD) and use that to replace the whole folder on the other machines.
Contact me directly (address available by clicking my name, to the left) for other suggestions if these don't pan out.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Appleworks Launch Failure

The application "Appleworks" could not be launched because of a shared library error:
    "%<Appleworks><Appleworks><CarbonLib>"
This is the message I get upon launching, and hopefully there's a quick fix to this. I'm using Appleworks 6.2 on a G4 Quicksilver with OS 10.3.9.

As far as I know, carbonlib is not a component of AppleWorks but a component of Mac OS Classic.
    Macintosh HD:System folder:Extensions:CarbonLib
    the current version is FU1-1.6.1
Something bothers me because, as far as I know, when you run 10.3.9 there is no reason explaining why AppleWorks run in its "classic" version.
I've followed these suggestions, but there was no Appleworks folder or a file named com.apple.plist when I looked in the Home -> Library -> Preferences folder.
These items are created by the program itself. As you can't launch it on a new install, it's normal that they are missing.
I recently installed AppleWorks 6.0.4 on my G4 running 10.4.11 and don't get the described behavior.
May you check the contents of the MacOS folder which you saw in the application's package.
I know that some old users emptied it when they used the program under MacOS 9.
    Its normal contents is:
    AppleWorks 6
    and three aliases:
    AppleWorks Essentials
    Clippings
    Starting Points
    They are pointing to:
    <startupVolume>:Applications:AppleWorks 6:AppleWorks Essentials
    <startupVolume>:Applications:AppleWorks 6:Clippings
    <startupVolume>:Applications:AppleWorks 6:Starting Points
which are three required folder (with their contents).
