Clips deleting themselves in Compound Clips

I have been editing compound clips and when I get half way through i notice early clips in the timeline are missing.  So if there is clips ABCD in a connected clip, it will be now AC and the other clips are now gone.  I've pressed undo until i saw when they were deleted and it seems when i'm selecting clips later in the timeline it selects earlier clips and deletes them with the clips i want to delete.  This is causing a major headache as it seems to be random, I can't replicate it on demand, but it happens eventually in ever compound clip I create.  I haven't noticed it while editing a project.  Any idea what is going on would help.
Thanks.

I am using 10.1.1 on OS X 10.9.3 Mavricks.
Here are two screenshots the first is how the timeline should look and the second is with the clips missing.

  • Deleting Multi Cam & Compound Clips- Help!

How can you delete multi cam clips from an event? Am I missing something? How can one type of clip be undeletable? It makes the whole event undeletable?
I've duplicated my project & used clips only which has now created a new event with only the used clips, great! So I'd like to delete the old event with all the original media and I can't
    So frustrating can anyone help?

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for taking the time out to reply,
But that means that you can never delete an event... ever if it contains a single multi cam, how do you get around that?
The whole reason I wanted to delete the event in the first place is because I'm trying to archive a project with the clips used only. So now I have two events, one with all the original stuff and one with just the select few clips. I think I'll go into more detail with this on the other thread about this since you've just tackled that one also.
    Many thanks!

  • Deleting a Compound Clip from Finder

    Hi,
I edited a couple of compound clips earlier this week and ever since then whenever I open FCPX it takes 30+ minutes to load the event and start up. At first I thought the problem was the size of the event, so I deleted some unused media and made it about half the size. Still, the load time remained the same. Now, after sitting through an hour of waiting for FCP to open, I'm trying to delete the two compound clips I edited right before the load time problems began, thinking perhaps one of them is corrupt and causing the ridiculous load time. However, whenever I try to do anything in Final Cut I get a "working" rainbow wheel that never seems to go away until I force quit, and if I do that I have to sit through another painfully long start up load time.
So basically FCP takes forever to open, then forever to do any action, even something as simple as copy and paste, when this event is loaded.
Is there a way to delete compound clips from the Finder WITHOUT opening FCP?
I am using FCP 10.0.9 on an iMac with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor and 32gb of memory, running OSX 10.8.5.
    Would appreciate any help!

If you want to get rid of the compound clips and you have used them in your project, you'll have to first trash or hide the project.  Then open the app and you should be able to delete the compound clips. Close the app and move the project back to its original location.
If it's still slow to open, it's also possible that you have some bad render files. Turn off BG Rendering and delete both project render files and event render files.

  • Making compound clip adds unwanted black between clips

I have a 2 minute psa that was shot in HD on the NX5 and edited on FCPX. I needed to put it together with other PSAs to make a longer show so I selected all the clips on the timeline and made a ‘compound clip’. The compound clip looks like one clip on the timeline and it should be able to be copied to another timeline. When I watched it back though, FCPX had introduced flash frames of black in between all of the cuts on the timeline, throwing all of the titles out of whack as well. Why did this happen?
    1.  Original Storyline
    2.  Original storyline made into a compound clip.
    3.  When I play it back I get flash frames in-between each clip so i checked the compound clip and found that it introduced black between each clip.

I ran into this problem too and found a quick solution that may work for anyone who encounters this bug.
THE PROBLEM: In one of my Projects, when creating a compound clip of the entire Project (so that I could apply Project-wide color and audio correction), gaps were inexplicably added to certain cuts. I don't know why. I first tried to work around this by exporting a Master File, but this also created the same gaps. Ugh.
THE SOLUTION: Duplicate your Project and in the duplicate, select all and create a compound clip. After creating the compound clip, double-click the compound clip in the Event Browser. This will open the compound clip, with all its bits and pieces exposed, in the Timeline. Go to the bottom-left corner of the Timeline and click the little button there to open the Timeline Index. Do a search for "gap". Select all the results in the list and press the delete key.
NOTE: Don't forget to duplicate your original Project (before creating a compound clip with the duplicate) so that you have it as a reference and a backup in case something goes wrong. I have not carefully analyzed this glitch and am not 100% sure this workaround is bulletproof. I also am not sure what is causing the OP's titles to be "thrown out of whack" as I didn't have that particular issue, so this "fix" may not actually fix that part of the problem.

  • How do I move a compound clip in one event to another event when it is used in a project?

I've been using FCPX since 10.0.3. The recent upgrade to 10.1 is forcing me to reorganize everything. At some point during the upgrade cycle, Apple decided to store ALL compound clips inside events, automatically, upon creation. I was oblivious to this decision at first. So here's what happened as a result.
I have 10 projects, numbered 1 through 10. My goal was to have one event for each project. However, it looks like most of my compound clips from my later projects got automatically created and placed in the first event (Video 1) instead of in the correctly numbered event. I'm pretty sure the clips INSIDE the compound clips are referencing the correct event; it's just the compound clip itself that resides in the wrong event. I'd like to move these compound clips over to the event they SHOULD have been created in, in the first place. However, I'm not sure if dragging and dropping them to the correct event will (a) create a new copy of the compound clip (one that is not referenced by any project whatsoever), or (b) move the original compound clip to the right event (removing it from the original/wrong event). Also, I'm really concerned about this, because I'm not sure how this affects the compound clip as used inside the actual project. I often have certain effects, color correction, etc. applied to the compound clip itself, and I don't want to lose that.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I really want to get these clips in order.

You can freely drag compound clips between events as you've seen.
If you do this between events in the same library, it will be a move by default; holding down the Option key will make it a copy operation.
If you drag between events in different libraries, this will be a copy operation. All clips contained in the compound clip will also be copied (or references as sym links) to the target library in order to keep the library completely self-contained (libraries never references each other and never span volumes).

  • Compound clip re-rendering

Is it just me or are compound clips the very devil when it comes to rendering?
You put a bunch of clips together in a compound clip for convenience, then maybe you need to go in there and edit an effect on one of the internal clips.  Bam, the entire compound clip needs to re-render, not just the single clip you edited.  Not only that, but now having waited for it to render to check the result and you go back up to the main project and it decides it also needs to re-render the whole compound clip in the main timeline again.  Ridiculous.
This is so inefficient that I'm seriously questioning the validity of using compound clips, or maybe it's a bug, after all it shouldn't be that hard for it to only render the changed section, marking the frame ranges as dirty, either within the clip itself or in the main timeline rather than having to re-render everything twice.  Gotta be a bug right?
...The real trouble being that Apple seem to lack any real support mechanism for reporting bugs instead apparently wanting to depend upon a forum that they don't participate in

If I understand you correctly, the answer is no. Changes to the content of the compound master like applying an effect will go through the project, but changes in duration of the compound don't. If you lengthen the compound, the project doesn't get longer. If you shorten the compound, there'll be black in the project.

  • Large compound clip crashes project at every start

    hey guys,
i've been working on a 90min project on my mountain lion mbp late 2011 (fcpx 10.0.5) but since a few days ago, it crashes as soon as a try to open the project.
reading from some posts here, one of my last actions before the first crash (making the "main" video a compound clip for clarity reasons) might be the cause of the constant crash at startup.
i really need to finish this project asap (2 months of work). fcpx starts and works perfect when i remove the crashing project to a new folder, but of course it's missing then in the programm.
i tried double-clicking the backup-file but that crashes fcpx, too. (the backup might be after the point when i joined the clips to one big compound clip)
any help & ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    thx in advance.
    scorp
    p.s.: unfortunately no time-machine installed ... :-/

    okay ... so here's an update ...
thx to some advice i got i let my mbp fight with the beachball for almost 13h (!!!) ... et voila ... the project was open ....
BUT (and that's a j-lo type butt) ... my 1st action was trying to convert the 90 min compound clip that seemed to cause the problem back to it's original files. it is not yet finished, so i could not just export the project (which of course would have been the "safe way").
now guess what ... simply by trying to select (= highlight) the big compound clip to achieve this, i GET THE BEACHBALL AGAIN !!! ... :-/
the activity monitor says my cpu is runnin' at 100% on fcpx and the memory at 3,43 gb ...
task manager says "fcpx doesn't react" and the beachball keeps rollin' and rollin' (4 about 20 min now) ...
do you guys think it'll recover if i keep runnin' it like that overnight again or is there another way of converting the compound clip without selecting it?
thx in adavance for your input ...
    p.s.: @ james cude: the project file is about 600mb ... i'm runnin' on a mbp late 2011 2,4ghz icore i7, 8gb ram

  • Why are compound clips not showing as such in FCPX any more?

I opened a project in FCPX which has been languishing for a while. It consists if a number of compound clips. However these are not being treated as such by the application anymore. They appear as regular clips, and I have to right click on them and select "open in timeline" to get them to show their contents. When I go back out of the clip! they retain their regular clip appearance.
How can I get proper compound clip behaviour from them?

    Tom -
TBH, I really can not remember how I made them - I started this some time ago, and I decided I really should get back to it an finish it. I started this sometime late 2011/early 2012, so the compound clips would have been made using whaever option was available at the time.
So, this is what I see in my timeline. The clip “Moscow” is a compound clip.
When I right-click on it, I see this:
Selecting Open in timeline gets me into the compund clip:
A couple of the clips in there are are compund clips too - but you won’t know it from looking at the interface. This seems to be the only project I have that is affected like this.

  • Missing Compound Clip

I created some compound clips in a project that I am currently working on.  After editing another area of the project, I discovered that a few of the compound clips appear to be blank.  The clips have a large compound clip symbol that I can see but nothing plays - no audio or video.  The clip name appears on top of the clip in the timeline but it does not show up in the index.  I'm not sure what I did to cause this.  It happened before and I just hit undo until the clip came back.  I didn't catch this in time to do that.  Would editing the compound clip in the timeline without expanding it cause this?  I really don't want to re-do all my work.

The compound in the event viewer is also blank.  It is the original, unedited clip that still plays.  My fault for not understanding that.  Here is what the compound clip looks like in the event viewer.

  • Gaps mysteriously appeared in compound clip

I wanted to combine 2 completed projects with some additional clips into a third project. I made a snapshot of each finished project, opened each snapshot, selected all of the clips in it, and then made it a compound clip. This allowed me to include the two completed movies as compound clips in the new project. A funny thing happened. One compound clip was just fine, but the 2nd compound clip had 1 frame gaps between each original clip. I don't know why it did that, it totally disrupted the timing of the edits. And I don't know why it did it to one snapshot and not the other. Any ideas?

I didn't particularly want a bazillion clips * 2 in my final combined timeline, I wanted 2 compound clips plus a few other miscellany clips.
But regardless of the reason, here are 2 images. First a section of the original timeline:
and what it looked like after I selected all, turned it into a new compound clip, then opened that compound clip:
As you can see, the gaps between the clips, aside from being unsightly, throw the timing off and make the audio horrible.
As I said, I have 2 projects I tried this with. As far as I can tell they are identical in structure (1080p) but of course have different content. This happens to one of them but not the other. I can't figure out what the missing variable is.

  • Move a Compound Clip to another project?

is there any way to move a compound clip in FCPx from one project to another?? I tried copying and pasting but am not having success... it just just pastes something that I copied earlier. Any ideas?? Thanks!

Jim is right.  I also do this all the time.  In fact I "park" several compound clips that I want to reuse in a project made just for that purpose.  Then I go into that project, select the compound clip and do the Command C to copy it.  Then I exit out of that project and go into the project I want the clip to be copied to.  I then (IMPORTANT) click somewhere in the timeline and do a Command V to paste it there.  No problems.  The only problems I sometimes have is with embedded titles that occasionally loose the text in the first or second title in a series that might have been enclosed in the compound clip.  Other than that it works great. By the way, since you are talking about "moving" the compound clip instead of "copying" it, you could use a Command X to cut then the Command V to paste, but that's rather severe and might not survive as a clip should your project crash or some unlikely thing on your way to the new project.  If you really want to move it, just copy then paste then go back to the original project and delete it there.  Best wishes.

  • My Compound Clips won't link to the event files

    Hi all,
In desperate need of assistance. FCPX has given me nothing but trouble since day 1. Recently i've had alot of trouble with my compund clips unlinking themselves from the sorce material in the same events folder. i have exhusted every avenue of trying to fix it but nothing seems to work. i've tryed re-linking and nothing seems to happen. my entire timeline is made up of compound clips so all of my project media is offline because the event compound clips are missing.
i dont understand why this is happening when the source material i made the compound clips from are sitting right there in the same event keyword collection.
i tried updateing the software to the latest FCPX but this made things worse, all the compound clips i had made in the previous version of final cut were gone. which is a bad thing becasue my entire project is made up of compound clips. so i went back to the older version and they were there luckally.
please someone give me a hand this is a very important project and i'm at the end of my teather.
the picture below is my folder stucture along with the event media withing them. as you can see the source material is there but the compund clips cannot detect they're there.

LOL! The K in my name stands for   compounds are evil
and sorry, james, we're joking while you're desperate..!
Just some 'insider' joke, 'cause I'm noticing, being a beginner myself, that compounds are mostly abused as 'track replacements'.
So, from a more serious point of view: Why compounds/what are the compounds are made of? What happens when you double-click it?

  • Compound Clip, vision repeats

I am viewing a compound clip and all of a sudden there is a cut where within the compound clip there is no cut. The audio maintains sync, however the video glitches and repeats itself for abount 5 seconds.
The point where the glitch occurs is consistent, is there after a restart of the application and the computer, deleting the preferences has made no difference.
Exporting the clip the glitch does not appear, this helps me get the finished product out but still makes viewing the project akward.
Intially I thought this was due to having a compound clip within a compound clip, however I am now getting it on a compound clip one level deep.
I have had this happen a couple of times. at different points and in different projects, ungrouping the compound clip removes the issue but also removes the compound clip.
    Any thoughts?
    Tony

So the program I am editing has 14 top level compound clips and numerous others within those clips, I am at the six minute mark and have lost count of how many times this glitch occurs, thank goodness I do not have a client with me, however, I am unable to just watch the program through "trusting that when I export it will be ok as it is happening just too often. Having to go in to every clip where this occurs and make an adjustment is a solution but tine consuming.

  • Compound clip audio issue

I record table-top games, and capture audio from an external microphone. I then sync them up into a compound clip with the camera audio muted and the good audio turned up. The problem is, whenever I go to cut up the clip (delete unnecessary bits), there is a very noticeable audio jump between cuts. Like the audio shuts off and on very quickly, even when I just make a splice and don't delete anything. I've cut up different clips using the same equipment numerous times and it has always been seamless, so I am guess that this is an issue with using compound clips. Does any one have a solution? driving me crazy.

TImecode shouldn't matter. FCP doesn't use it. Have you tried the sync function?
you can also select the video and use open in timeline, then add the audio into it to sync it.
    COmpound clips shouldn't be involved.
WHat are the  audio sample rates?

  • How do I store a compound clip for later use or another project?

I created a compound clip, then lifted it from story line and disabled it, its darkened (invisible doesnt play in the viewer),
however its space runs as black empty frames when I play over it.
I want to do 2 things:
I wanted the footage proceeding it to shift in left to fill that black void and play, as the compound clip is "hidden". Is this possible?
I also wanted to save that compound clip for use later in this project and possibly in another project, can I save it out as a separate clip set?

I think I got it, lift the compound clip from storyline by right clicking and choosing "lift from storyline",
drag the compound clip left or right out of its original position, select the grey slate where it used to be in the time line,  and hit delete. the clips to the right now shift left to fill its void.
and the compound clip is automatically available in the event library folder its grouped clips originated from but now shown as a compound clip once you create that compound clip..
