Clips go to trash

I updated to I MOVIE 6 year ago and have had an inconsistent performance issue.
The clips are sometimes going to trash when i import from video camera, i have also had clips in trash when i re-open a project that has been saved. My edits are all gone and after recovering them i have to re-edit the project. This never happened in I MOVIE 4 but it does in 6.
I am open to suggestions.

I've had this problem from time to time. You may be able to retrieve your project by control-clicking on your project and go to Package Content. There should be a quicktime file that contains your timeline. You should be able to reimport that file into iMovie and continue working. Hope this helps.

  • IMovie crashed, clips stored in trash, can't recover them

    I keep having this problem.
I forgot to save my project and iMovie crashed on me an hour after working on this video.
I had many clips that I just can't recreate and they were all moved to the iMovie Trash.
I went into the trash and selected them but for some reason I can't drag them back into my project.
I'm in "clips" mode so that's not the problem- I already read somewhere that that might be it.
Please don't tell me all my clips are corrupted... please.
    Can anyone help?

okay so i found the same basic topic in an earlier post, and someone said to try and restart the computer, and the person with the same problem i have said it worked, so i tried it.
    guess what?
    all my files are gone.
there's nothing in the trash to recover now.
so now i have to start from scratch.
    i'm really frustrated with this.
if it happens again, does anyone have a solution?
    please let me know.
    i'm really upset about it.

  • Opening iMovie throws hundreds of clip files in trash

When opening iMovie it seems to hang for quite a while. Noticed also it was creating hundreds of clip files into the trash while program is opening. None of these clip files have any video on them and show zero K for file size. Also camera is being recognized and controls operate camera (Canon zr40) but no video comes through - blue screen. Had functioned fine in the past. Know camera is functioning fine and firewire connection is good because I tried it on another Mac. Also camera works fine with iMovie 8. Trashed plist file and did the garageband thing with no luck. (Problems existed before install of iMovie 8). Any ideas as to what is going on?

Patrick - no external drive is hooked up to the computer. Another thing - when it was working fine I only had a single account on the computer. I later set up several accounts for my kids and hadn't had an opportunity to use iMovie until just recently when I found it didn't work. I deleted the accounts in case that had something to do with it but still no change.

  • How to move rejected clips ONLY to trash in the new iMovie?

In the old iMovie, there was a 'Move rejected clips' function that I cannot find in the new iMovie. When I select it to where it only shows rejected clips before selecting 'Move to trash', ALL the clips, including the ones marked as 'favorites' end up being deleted. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you!

If you click the Adjust button and then choose the Cropping tool you can adjust the framing to create a pillar box. That way rather than having your shot blown up to fit the 16:9 frame is will be shown at it's actual size with black bars on the left and right.

  • Spacesaver in imovie '11 won't send my rejected clips to the trash

im trying to delete some videos from my mac in order to save space and clean it up a bit. So i selected the clips i wanted to deleted and i clicked "move rejected to trash'" and it won't move them to the trash! please help!

Did that work for you?  I was looking at that too, but was discouraged by having to use a sparsebundle given Snow Leopard had such great NAS support.
FYI to everyone else, I upgraded my ReadyNAS firmware to 4.1.8.  NetGear indicated the following updates with the nre firmware, but it didn't fix this problem:
         New features and enhancements
         1. Added support for Mac OS X 10.7 “Lion”.
         2. Added warning when NFS access to home shares is enabled.
         3. Added a redirect for http://<host>/ip to https.
         4. Added enhancements to advanced AFP permission settings.
         5. Provide download links for exported users and groups instead of asking for email.
         6. Updated ReadyNAS Remote to the latest revision.
         Bug fixes
         1. Fixed javascript error in FrontView.
         2. Delay auto power-off if backup jobs are still queued.
         Limitations
         1. IE 6 no longer supported.
         2. Drives greater than 2TB are not supported.
I found this link which I thought had some useful information: http://carryflag.blogspot.com/2010/06/imovie-event-library-on-network-drive.html
Some people reported success with the terminal command:
defaults write -app iMovie allowNV -bool true
But apparantly, after the Lion update, fewer people reported success with it.  Still looking though... If anyone else has more symptoms to add, please let me know.  I might try to use a sniffer program and see if I can pull a packet capture.  That might reveal some info....
On another note, has anyone had any problems connecting to their Time Capsule in the same fashion?  I had an idea of connecting a USB Raid Array to it and connecting through the TC, but wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts or experience with that....  Thanks.

  • Question About Deleting Parts Of Clips and iMovie Trash

    Hi,
Why are small deleted portions of clips not moved to the trash, where you can recover them? It looks like if you want to delete small sections of individual clips, those deletions cannot be recovered once the project is saved. Am I missing something?

Hmmm. Something doesn't sound quite right. When I delete a portion of a clip here — after splitting a clip, for example — the deleted portion goes in the iMovie trash. To retrieve the clip I can just drag it from the Trash window back to the Timeline or Clips pane.
That's not how it's working for you? Are you using iMovie 6?
There is another way to retrieve the clip, which relies on iMovie's non-destructive editing feature. It is useful when you've used Direct Trimming to shorten a clip, which does NOT send the deleted portion to the Trash. (There is no clip for the trimmed portion.) It's also useful after you've emptied the iMovie Trash, which removes a split clip, but does NOT remove the clip's source file.
That is to Option-drag the shortened clip to some other location (Option-dragging creates a copy) then select the clip and choose Advanced > Revert Clip to Original. That reverts that clip to its original length. Depending on the editing you've done to the clip, it may be necessary to select the menu command more than once.
Otherwise, I can't think of what might cause it to work differently for you.
Please say how you are creating the clip that is deleted. Is it a split clip?

  • I open project, says some clips in trash, can I these back into movie?

hello imovie guru's I need some help with my quandry, when I do open a project I've been working on for quite some time now, it tells me there are some clips in the trash would I like to view, or not? Of course I say yes, because when I say no, there is no film left, but they're the clips I want/need. so is there a way to get them back into the original movie? I'm afraid I've emptied the trash in the iMovie by accident? thinking I could just grab them and move 'em back in manually. can I recover these clips without having to go back and start over with the whole project again. thanks for your support ahead of time. VHS conversions from my 1st. band 30 odd yrs. ago. geeky looking cats, but fun to watch and be able to convert to dvd finally for the other boys/men now in the band. who'll be astonished I've kept them all these years. HELP!!! But these classic old videos are great for critic-ing my progress thru the yrs. which backs up my theory of "less is more", especially when making music. Nothing but the Blues baby, gots to keep the American musical heritage alive!!

    1. you can copy and paste between projects. So, in project A, select what you want to reuse and use the copy command (command-c). Go to project B, place the playhead to where you want your clips to be, and paste (command-v).
    2. yes. also look at the auditions feature if you are aiming to go back and forth between different versions (where the clip is enabled/disabled).

  • How do I keep only the cropped portion of a clip and trash the rest?

Before getting my new Macbook, I was using iMovie3. When I would crop a file, only the highlighted portion was kept and the rest of the clip was sent to the trash. With iMovie HD, it is my understanding when you crop a clip, the information outside the cropped area is stored somewhere - how do I send this unneeded portion of the clip to the trash? I have used up almost all the memory in my new computer and don't know how to free up space without deleting the entire clip.

    Hi m
You can't: As standard. iMovie is a "*non destructive editor*" - means it stores
the Capture/Imported material in one place and Your cutting, editing etc. is just
a text document refering onto how this material is to be viewed.
Even if You only usesed one frame from an hour long import - all of it will be
saved for futhure changes. (1 hour = about 13Gb of space)
You can: Send movie back to Camera and a new miniDV tape. Then start a new
project from this - and delete Your old project.
This will free up space - but You lose the ability to adjust the prior editings,
    texts and so on.
Alt is to save as full quality QT.mov and start a new project from this. Still
what's done is done - but You jump the Camera step. (I have the feeling of that
I get a quality loss this way - but several in this forum disagrees)
    Advice:
    1. Try to Capture/Import about what You need and not just dump in several hours of
material for a few minutes movie.
    2. I use a hugh external FireWire hard disk (Mac OS Extended formatted) to store
my movie projects and a minimum of 25Gb free space on my internal (start-up) one.

  • Two Problems - Trash and Moving Clips

    Problem 1)
I can't drag clips out of the iMovie trash. The application closed and moved some valuable clips into the trash.
    Problem 2)
I can't drag clips into the bar any more and one of the clips appears faded in the 'library' of to be used clips. When I try to move another clip, that one becomes faded (but doesnt move into position) and the other one returns from it's 'faded' appearence.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

  • How do I get clips out of imovie trash?

imovie quit - clips were moved to trash - How do I restore clips from imovie trash?
    Thanks...

From iMovie's File menu click on Show Trash, then you can drag them back to the timeline.

  • Trashing Clips

iMovie 6.0.2, like iMove 5, puts clips it cannot load in the IMovie trash, where they are still visible and even play. If you restore these by dragging them to the clips pane and resinsert them in the movie, it plays normally. This process is laborious because the names you assigned do not show in the trash, and some of your edits are lost. When you save it and reload it the clips are back in the trash. This is unacceptable. There seems to be no way to export clip and reimport, and there should be.
This is a bug, not a feature. I think there is a aorkaround; save the movie to IDVD; it is saved correctly in a non-obvious place. You can reimport that and do more edits (painfful). I tried deleting prefernces and that didn't work.
Not that you'll ever find the movie to do this; it is saved on the system disk in an obscure directory, not even on the volume and directory you were working from. Who told these people to make assumptions? What is his, Windows?
This is far below pple standards and brings up a deeper problem, which is that iMovie does not meet Mac guidelins. Who asked it to save my movie in a place of its own choosing, instead of where I was orking? This is a Windows thing. The Mac philosophy is that the customer is always right; the Windows philosophy is that the customer made an error. Any programmer with that Attitude has no business working for Apple.
So you can't load my ;cips? Figure it out, sonny. If you can't your succesor will.
Let's get back on the Macintosh Way. Write a letter to Steve. At least he understands what a Macintosh is about.

Owen, just so you have a sense of what the problem is and what it isn't, your description suggests an underlying problem that's causing iMovie to behave very strangely for you. Almost everything you said does not occur normally.
You should be able, for example, to move clips from the iMovie Trash to the Timeline/Clips pane, save the project, and have them stay where you put them.
There seems to be no way to export clip and reimport, and there should be.
Before exporting to a Full Quality movie, turn on the "Share Selected Clips Only" checkbox in the export dialog window. Then import THAT movie.
...not that you'll ever find the movie to do this; it is saved on the system disk in an obscure directory,
iMovie always saves a project exactly where we place it when created. iDVD does not, at least not when the iDVD project is created from within iMovie. If you tell iMovie to tell iDVD to create an iDVD project, iDVD places the new iDVD project loose in the Documents folder of the startup disk. (I agree iDVD should ask where to save it. I wouldn't call that location obscure, however.)
If you create a new iDVD project from within iDVD, it asks where to save it, as you wish. Do that to control the iDVD project location, then drag the iMovie project into the iDVD window.
But iDVD doesn't normally create a movie you can import to iMovie, so I'm not sure exactly what movie you are referring to. If you think it's important, please say.
As Matti suggested, the most likely cause of the Trash problem is that the project is stored on an external disk that hasn't been properly formatted. It must use the Mac OS Extended disk format for iMovie to reliably save to the disk. It sounds like the project hasn't been saved properly after you drag clips from the Trash, so clips end up back in the Trash when you re-open the project.
More about the disk format here, including notes about third-party software which can mess up iMovie:

  • How to move to the trash rejected clip from iMovie

    HI,
I have tried countless time to move rejected clips to the trash in iMovie 08.  I know I am taking the correct steps, it is pretty simple and staright forward but iMovie doesn't move the rejected clip to the trash any longer, it has done it in the past though.  Any one has a suggestion?
    Tahnk you,
    Lygio

Is this what you have been doing?
right click on the iMovie event, go to the bottom (or where it says "move rejected clips to trash") and click it.

  • Deleting clips isn't freeing space up, nothing appears in my trash

I've been working on a project in move, roughly 15 minutes long
All the clips from that have been taking up so much space in my laptop (65 GB) I decided to delete the clips as I finished certain areas of my project. I've deleted roughly 40% of the clips, yet I still only have 2.5 GB of space on my computer. And to make things worse, now when I move my clips to the trash, nothing appears, as if it were blank
    Please help me

What size is your hard disk?
Can you use disk Utility to get information about its size and how much is used?
Deleting items inside a sparse disk image will not reduce its size.
As requested please take this up in the correct conference but return here and post a link to it.

  • Won't save clips-moves them to trash automatically

I am importing dv clips from an external hard drive into Imovie 5. For some reason it saved the movie project initially, but sent all unused clips to the trash. Upon opening the file it cannot locate those files. I've tried saving them under a new name, importing files to be used to my hard drive and nothing works.

Hi jknapp - welcome to the forum!
Is your external drive formatted correctly for Macs - it should be Mac OS Extended. Check by Control-Clicking its icon and selecting Get Info. It can be changed in Disk Utility, but note that you would lose its contents by doing so.
