Clips into timeline

Hey guys, simple question, I opened premiere pro and I'm trying to bring clips into my timeline from the viewer in the top left but it's not letting me, how do I fix that?

Timeline does not contain a sequence, so:
Right click on the clip in the project window: create new sequence from clip (or something like that, not at my editing station right now.
Or drag a clip into the new Item icon right bottom corner project window.

Thank you so much for asking
In the Project Panel a left click highlights the asset but ignores the drag.
In the timeline, a left click highlights the panel and when I try to drag it gives a flicker but that's all.
I can cut and paste in the timeline.
A restart of CS5 has no effect. Restarting the computer solves the problem for a while.
    Four different mouses--same problem.

  • Can't drag clips into timeline (newbie warning)

I'm sure that this has been discussed previously on this board, but I couldn't find a post.
Back to my problem: All of a sudden, the current project that I'm working on will not let me drag clips into the timeline. The clips turn to a "lite" color of gray and freeze. I'm brand new to this so a uncondescending response would be greatly appreciated.

Hi larget2 - this being a very friendly board, it is most unlikely that you will be scorned! We've all sought and been given willing help here from time to time.
Some more details might be of help in solving your problem:
How big is your project, and how much storage space do you have?
What is the source of your clips?
Is this your first project, or have you successfully completed others?
How far into the project were you before the problem began?
Is your project stored on your start-up disk, or on an external drive?
try repairing permissions (Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility), and with iMovie closed down, trash this file: Users(you)>Library>Preferences>com.apple.imovie.plist.

  • Pasting Clips into Timeline. Overwrite to Destination Tracks

When I paste clips into the middle of the timeline they seldom overwrite to the tracks I've selected. Why is that? They usually overwrite to video 1 and audio 1 & 2. So to get around it I have to go thru the tedious process of moving the playhead to the end of the tracks and insert there then move inserted clip down to where I want it. Sometimes I even have to unlink the audio to prevent those tracks from overwriting the wrong tracks and then re-link after placing.
I'm sure there is something simple I'm overlooking here...
    Thanks!

I suspect what is happening is you haven't moved the video destination button to the correct track. if you look at the panel to the left of the timeline you will see a pair of buttons labelled v1 and V1 that are attached to each other. The leftmost of that pair (v1 - note the lower case v) is the one that sets the destination track for video you add to the timeline. Click & drag it up to V2 and new clips you add will be placed on V2 and not V1. You can also shortcut this by pressing F6 and the number of the track you want to be the destination track.
There are companion audio destination buttons for your audio tracks, so you may need to move them to A3/A4 when you move the video destination button to V2

  • Can no longer pull clip into timeline from Viewer??

I no longer have the ability to drag a clip, or sub clip if I've chosen in and out points, into the timeline from the Viewer.
When I attempt to do this the clip moves as if I'm repositioning the clip within the Viewer window, but does not move to the timeline.....thoughts??
    Thnx,
    Bh

Either the video track that you are trying to edit on is locked (dark grey diagonal lines thru the track)
or the source and destination patch buttons are disconnected.
The Illustration below shows the v1 source correctly connected to the V1 destination:

  • PrE 10 freezes when dragging clips into timeline

Computer stats: Windows7, 64-bit, Intel i5-450M (Dual Core) 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 325+ GB free on hard drive
As soon as I drag-n-drop media into the timeline, PrE 10 instantly freezes.  I can Add Media to the edit window without problem.  I wait for all processing to stop, and then as soon as I drag just one clip to the timeline, PrE 10 freezes.  I tried different clips - including just short ones - with the same results.  I was using an external hard drive, but I copied the clips over to my computer's hard drive to see if that made a difference (the NTFS vs FAT32 discussion) ... no change; same problem even when adding the media directly from my computer's hard drive.
I appear to be having this problem with video shot from my Canon S95, but not my Canon T3i.  The S95 shoots video at 1280x720, 23.976 fps and uses the .MOV wrapper.  I have tried using both the project settings for AVCHD 720p, 23.976 fps and the DSLR project setting for 720p / 23.976 fps.  GSpot read the CODEC as the AVCHD / 23.976fps, so I assumed that project setting would have worked.  I checked for any PrE 10 updates as well as QuickTime updates - all good.
As a comparison, my T3i shoots video at 1940x1080 at 30fps, and I used the DSLR project setting that matched those #'s -- had absolutely no problem with dragging media to the timeline and editing.  Worked great.
I went through this FAQ and didn't find anything of note:

I am in the process of preparing to test a sample from your brand and model camera in my Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. I will have the results probably tomorrow morning.
For now I just want to put you through the drill that I do for anyone who says he/she is using Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
    1. Are you working from the 8.0/8.0.1 Update of the program?
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4653
    2. Do you have the automatic Background Rendering and AutoAnalyzer features turned OFF.
For Background Rendering option. See Edit Menu/Preferences/General.
For AutoAnalyzer option. Click on Organizer in the row below the blue active Organize header in order to open the Elements Organizer. In the Elements Organizer workspace, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/AutoAnalyzer Options and disable all the AutoAnalzyer options. To return to the Premiere Elements workspace from the Elements Organizer workspace, in the Elements Organizer workspace, go to File Menu/Exit.
Is your computer optimized in spite of the fact that  you have a high end laptop? I presumed so but always go to verify, no pile ups of preview files, conformed video and audio files et al.
Looking at the properties of your source media, I see:
    video compression = MPEG1
    audio compression = MPEG-Layer1 (.mp2)
    Frame Size = 640 x 480 (4:3)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio = 1.0
Frame Rate = 30 progressive frames per second
With properties like those you are sure to get a red line over that content since there is no project preset with that description.
But, your choice of the default NTSC DV Standard would have been mine also.
I am heading to try to get a quick look at the behavior of the sample video here in my Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
    To be continued.

  • Dragging multiple media clips into vertically stacked tracks in the timeline? Is it possible?

Hoping that some Adobe Premiere Guru might be able to lend some insight into what seemingly should be a fairly simple thing to accomplish... but despite scouring the web, I can't seem to find a peep of a solution for it.
My neighbor (whom, incidentally, I convinced to go with Premiere CS5.5 as his NLE of choice in the wake of the FCPX uncertainty) is working on a "reality-style" project where they have a massive amount of cameras running simultaniouisly for hour upon hours on end. Think Big Brother House style.
Essentially for each hour of the footage, he is creating a project in which all the multiple camera footage (MOV) from that hour is listed/linked over in the project panel. For example, for HOUR ONE he has the footage from all 20 cameras (or whatever) for hour one listed there.
BASICALLY what he wants to be able to do is grab ALL the footage from those various cameras AT ONCE, DRAG them over to the timeline and when he drops them there, the video (and, inversely, the audio) clips STACK vertically, one on top of the other, each one taking its own track in the timeline.
Currently, of course, when he does this the footage arranges itself in the timeline end to end. In the case of my HOUR ONE, 20 CAMERA example, this basically creates a 20 hour long clip, as oppossed to a one hour clip with 20 tracks, stacked one on top of the other.
As near as we can tell, there's no keyboard shortcut to make this happen. I VAGUELY recall being able to do this in FCP (maybe?) so I'll be stunned and more than just a little bit disappointed to if there isn't SOME way to pull this off in Premeire.
Does anybody have any idea if this mode of automatically dropping clips into the timeline as stacked tracks is possible? It will, quite literally, save him hours and hours of work if he can figure out the secret. And I won't feel quite so guilty for having turned him onto Premiere for this specific project!
And if anyone knows for a fact this is NOT possible, that would be great to know as well. At least we can put the notion to bed one way or another.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards, Michael

You can do this with the make multi-camera source sequence command in Premiere Pro CS6 (note that this was posted before CS6 was launched):
    Mark the clips
    Select the clips
Choose Clip > Create Multi-Camera Source Sequence
Choose the style of synchronization and click OK
Right click on Multi-Camera source sequence and choose > Open in Timeline.
Clips are now stacked up inside of a sequence

  • I can't  drag clips into my timeline - HELP!

I am working on a project at the moment and I am having issues with dragging imported clips into my timeline. I click on them to drag them down but they go grey and stay put! What is going on, can anyone help me as this is quite an urgent project.

What happens if you drag them to the clips viewer instead of the timeline? (Click on the small film frame next to the small clock at lower left before you drag.)

  • Background noise removal takes about 3 seconds into each clip in timeline to kick in, so each clip has noise in the first few seconds.  How do you get this to remove noise from the very start of the clip?

Background noise removal takes about 3 seconds into each clip in timeline to kick in, so each clip has noise in the first few seconds.  How do you get this to remove noise from the very start of the clip?

insert a 5 second gap in the beginning of the timeline.

  • How to put clip into 16:9 timeline then scale footage?

How do I drop a clip into a 16"9 SD timeline and scale the footage up until its fits the frame, then export to Youtube SD widescreen.

Assuming you wish to drop a 4:3 clip into the DV widescreen sequence? Select clip on timeline to highlight it, then go to Effects panel and use MOTION effect - the SCALE parameter can be use zoom in, and you might want to use POSITION as well if heads are getting cut off. Can pan-and-scan to keep action centered. Study up on using KEYFRAMES also, since you may need to animate the framing to keep subject in frame.
When happy with the edit, just export as H.264 using the YouTube SD wide preset
