Clips messing up in themes

Hey folks, im trying to make a movie for my japanese class. I captured the film, then cut it up into segments using 'Split Video Clip at Playhed'.
The issue is that when I try to drag the clips into the places they need to be for the themes it starts the clip from the begining.. the WHOLE begining, like where the first long clip started
How do I stop this? Do I need to go back and recut them in a different way so each clip is seperated and not holding information for all the other parts?
If I was confusing it went like this: I caputred the film in one long chain then cut it up, but now it is starting from the begining of the chain, not the begining of the clip like I want.

Symptom
When using themes in iMovie HD 6, you may find that clips you have shortened play in their entirety when placed in the theme's drop zone.
Products affected
iMovie HD 6
To work around this behavior, export the edited clip, and reimport it into your project:
Select the clip you want to use in the drop zone.
Choose Share > QuickTime.
Choose Full Quality from the Compress movie for pop-up menu.
Select the option to "Share selected clips only."
Click Share
Name and save the file.
Choose File > Import.
Select the file you just saved.
Click Open.
Drag the newly imported clip into the desired drop zone.

It depends on the clips' content, their current format, and how much you would need to compress them, but in most cases and with most email systems, it's difficult to impossible to compress a clip enough to be able to get it through the attachment size limits of most email providers and still have the video be comprehensible. You'll probably need to find a web site or other method where you could post the videos for download by the students.
You can try compression and trimming, though, and see if you can get the video small enough to email. An attachment often has to be 3MB or less to go through, though it depends entirely on the email systems on both ends. If you look to the right under "more like this" you'll find similar threads on the subject.

Depends on how do you want to do it. If you store your backups with iCloud - try in your iPad's preferences. If you keep your stuff on your computer - plug your iPad in and launch iTunes, the photos should be there.

You should check that the Project settings match the clip settings before editing them to the Timeline.
Only newly created Projects will change not existing ones by adjusting the Project settings.
If, for example, you have a Project set to NTSC DV you can only end up in trouble if the clips are PAL 1920 x 1080i.

Optimize Clips won't Optimize them?

As much as I love FCPX I am trying ot make sure I can get it to run as smoothly as possible and at an optimal level without crashing or slowing down. I have a high end quad core iMac 27in with 32gb of RAM and I am working off a Seagate Firewire 800 drive. One thing I read alot on this forum and other sites is that optimizing media will actually make editing faster/more reliable.
While attempting to do this I ran into an error though. The original footage was h.264 from my Canon 7D and was imported onto the computer fine without issue. I attempted to grab all the clips in the event they were in and went up to File ->Transcode Media. I checked off the box for Optimize Media and then immediately look at the Background Rendering window to see what is going on. While looking at the window though, the Transcoding and Analysis bars never move. I have waited hours and hours and still they dont budge, they all stay at 0%. Pausing and starting them up again doesnt seem to change things either. Does anyone else have this issue or know why this could be happening? Also how can I check to see if a clip is already Optimzed?
Any thoughts?

Thank you, this seemed to help me a little bit. When I revealed in finder, It showed me that not ALL of my clips had been optimized. Some of them had been however it seems not everything had been through the process. Previously I had attempted to grab all of the clips in the Event (via Select ALL) and then go up to Optimize Clips in the menus, but it had not worked out so well. I attempted again but this time, I went though all of the clips and Command Clicked all of the clips to multi select them and it seems to have actually worked. Upon going through the whole event I noticed that some of the clips that could have been causing the original issue were actually not individual video clips but rather a couple of IMG pictures mixed in and a few "Synchronized Clips" I had used. When neither the IMG or Synchronized Clips were selected everything else seemed to optimize well.
Obviously the IMGs don't need to be optimized but do the Synchronized Clips need to be optimzed if the original clips that were put in them already are? Could trying to Optimize a Synchronized Clip cause the whole process to pause and stop everything else. I used the Synchronized Clips in my project already in a couple of sections.
Any ideas?

Clip length revert in themes

Hey all--
I'm an iMovie newbie with a question about themes. I'd like to use some of the theme elements, but whenever I drop in a clip it reverts to the original clip start point and doesn't retain any of my clip length edits. Do I need to prepare my clips differently or am I missing a setting or..? Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum, Myrah.
You got it just about right; you're not missing something. There's a bug in themes that causes a clip placed in a Drop Zone to play from the beginning of the clip's FILE, not the beginning of the clip.
The trick is to export (share) only that clip to a Full Quality movie, then import THAT movie to the project and drop it in the Drop Zone.
To export (share) just one clip, check the "Share selected clips only" checkbox in the Share dialog window.
After the theme has been rendered you can discard the clip.

Source Clips Missing After Moving Them

I found a few threads about this but I didn't find a solution that worked for me so I thought I ask again.
I just bought a new HD with Firewire 800. I moved all my events to it using iMovie '09 by holding the command key and "moving" them. Now my 20+ projects are all missing their source clips.
How can I help iMovie to find where the clips have been moved to?

Are you sure you are doing the Command-Drag from within iMovie?
You should see a small icon for your external drive in the Event Library List. Drag your Event from its place in the Event Library List for the internal drive to this icon while holding the command key.

Workflow for marking clips and then exporting them out as individual clips with audio?

I'm just starting to use Prelude. I recorded an interview for my daughter for a school project last week. The interview went well, but I want to mark as "sub-clips" all of the video interview's question/answer combos (e.g. "What is your name? My name is John Doe.") and then save them out to individual clips rather than have to manage the full size files (about 40GB in all from my Panasonic GH3, 50mbps, IPB MOV) with clip markers. I'll keep the originals as backups, but would really rather work with the individual clip files.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! I would think this would be a very simple and common function. Basically, just dividing up the original video into multiple, standalone video clips with the same bit-rate, encoding, etc., but with new headers/EOF markers. Just chopping the original files up into chunks with no changes or reencoding necessary. If I can do it the way I imagine it, it should be a very quick process, at least compared to transcoding the files.

Meg The Dog's suggestion will work if you don't intend to bring in all of your media off the card. The Partial Ingest method will allow you to selectively create subclips during ingest and not transfer the full original clips.
However, you do state you plan to keep all your media - not just the parts you want to subclip. So here's my suggestion for the workflow:
1. Ingest all your media from your cameras (the entire clips - not the partial clip method)
2. Open each clip from the Prelude Project Panel and create your Subclip Markers using Prelude logging tools.
3. In the Project Panel you will find new entries will appear for each SUBCLIP Marker you add to your master clips.
4. You can organize you subclips into BINS as needed to keep track of the segments of your video
5. When you're ready to create your timeline of subclips you can either
   5a. EXPORT all the SUBCLIPS into their own files (select all subclips you want to export and use the FILE->EXPORT->MEDIA menu command)
   or
   5b. Drag-Drop your subclips into a ROUGHCUT in Prelude to order your story. Then use the SEND TO PREMIERE PRO feature to send the Rough Cut into Premiere pro where you can finish your edit. All the media will come along for the ride into Premiere Pro (including your Subclips). You can then add titles and any effects easily enough in Premiere Pro).
There are some other options here you can also try out which might be interesting. For example, you can add transitions and any additional audio tracks to your ROUGH CUT directly in Prelude and then EXPORT the Rough Cut as a final movie - and not need to move to Premiere Pro unless you have wider editing needs.

Three Cameras, several clips, how to bring them all together

Good day everyone. I shot my first wedding ceremony using one Canon 5d and two 7d cameras. So I have several clips from each camera during the one ceremony. I have done in the past a FCP Multiclip between three cameras, one clip each which was straight forward. Now with multiple clips from each camera for one ceremony, I am unsure how to combine them all and make one continous clip to then create one multiclip? What I was thinking of doing was just getting the one clip from each camera that is the same scene from each and then creating a multiclip from that, but the results of this would then be several multiclips. Is there an easier way to this? Maybe creating one large clip of the several clips per camera and then create a multiclip? Any info on what others are doing would greatly be appreciated. Here is what I did:
1. I created a new sequence and dropped all my clips into three different tracks. Each track representing one camera
2. Wherever I saw a break on a clip, I made sure to blade the other two tracks to match that break.
3. I selected all clips including audio and dropped them into a new BIN.
4. As all where still selected in the bin, I control click and selected Multiclip and NOT multiclip Sequence using In points
5. I then played the multiclip that was created and it is out of sequence. So some clips begin to play at a later time then when it actually happened.
I believe this is happening since the multiclip is being created by file name and each camera has a different file name, so it is going by that order. Do I need to label each clip using the Angel tab to make this work, or is there another way? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Digitizing Whole Tape vs. Logging Specific Clips and Batch Digitizing Them

For the last couple of years I have always gone through each of my (HDV) tapes, logged the clips I thought I might use, and batch-digitized them.
Is there any reason I can't digitize whole tapes all at once and then create subclips? I do have the room on my media drive.

No reason at all.
How I capture depends on the nature of the project. For most script based projects, I usually only capture individual clips that I think I may use. For event type projects (seminars, meetings, etc), I log and then capture the entire recording as one clip.

Before we go any further, I would like to say that there is no Word 2012 version released before for Microsoft official site.
If the Word document could still be opened by other machine except for Word 20XX in the
specific machine, that means the data file itself is fine. But Word 20XX application mighe be corrupted. Repair it and then check the result.

How do i create linked pages with multiple video clips on each of them?

I took a bunch of small videos with my digital camera, and now want to make a dvd that has a main menu with 7 choices, and then each one of those will take you to pages with each clip as a motion button (6 to a page). So if i click on "Dublin" on the main menu, it takes me to Dublin #1 which has clips 1 - 6, i can then click on an arrow to go to a second page with clips 7 - 12, etc. I can return to the main menu and click on "Belfast" which takes me to the first page of 6 clips, then a second page with 6 more, etc.
The problem I am having is linking two or more Chapter pages together. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forums, Eric.
iDVD has a few limitations, but you can do much of what you want.
Limitations: Only 6 selections per menu page. And the Forward/Backward selection buttons advance only one menu at a time.
Basic solution: Use the folder button to create a link to a submenu; move to that submenu and drag your movies onto that menu page. Repeat for more submenus.
Alternative approach: Use iMovie to join all the Dublin videos, with chapter markers to designate each segment. Import the movie with chapter markers into iDVD and they automatically create the Dublin submenus. And you can watch all the Dublin videos in a row, or use the menus to navigate to the desired video. After you watch the last segment, you'll automatically return to the main menu.

GarageBand substituting earlier versions of clips as I add them

I haven't used GarageBand 3.0.5 (104.10) to record real instruments yet.
What I've been doing is building up Mash-Ups, or sample-pieces.
One or 2 tracks for the backing tracks, then individual tracks for each volume level and effects where I drop in the various short phrases and samples.

What's suddenly happening for the 1st time w/ the current work is that I drop in a new version of a previously used item . . . taken from left-panned stereo to centered mono say . . or a newly edited partial of an earlier full phrase, yet once a new clip has imported, it's a replica of the earlier one !
It's half the length, back to left-panned, sporting an effect not on that track . . . whatever.
It's already weird that sometimes an .aiff comes out at a lower pitch and I'll have to convert it to an mp3 w/ iTunes to get to import right . . but this is more deeply odd.
I put both the com.apple.garageband.cs & com.apple.garageband.plist files on the desktop & re-opened G-Band . . . nuthin' !

Well, I take it nobody's gone into similar areas, or encountered quite the same problem ?

Chosing multiple clips, hold on to them, when I then want only one.

When choosing several clips to move on a timeline, then I want to choose one end of one of those clips, which happens often, it automatically chooses the ends of all the clips that I originally chose. (I know if I hold down the shift It will only choose my single clip).
Other editing programs work more efficiently (oppositely) without using shift key.
If I move several clips, I then click on one end of any of those clips, which "unlocks" the hold on all those moved clips, and allows me to simply extend the length of a single clip, without having to hold down the "shift" key.
I'd rather have to hold down shift to include all last held clips ends, as this move is much more less used.

Hi Mark, Yes, you are correct. Only thing is that having to deselect first, seems to be an unnessisary extra move. I thought maybe there might be a setting somewhere to change this. Another design flaw I guess... :-(

IMovie '09 v 8.06 - Changing video speeds on clips messes up the video clip

I have ALWAYS had this problem with iMovie.. Randomly it will work, but usually, when I'm trying to put some slow-motion segments in my movie, they jump seemingly randomly between parts of the source clip. In otherwords, if I have a 60 second clip, and I split it at 20 seconds, and 25 seconds, and then slow the 5 second middle part down to 50% using the slider (so that 5 seconds of video is now 10 seconds long), that 10 seconds jumps around between seemingly random sections from my video. If I change the speed back to 100%, the clip goes back to normal. This is REALLY frustrating... Has anyone seen that??
