Clips on the move

I thought I'd try to rephrase my problem.
I'm editing a multi-track piece of footage. I want to be able to change the speed of clips that take place near the begining of the edit without knocking later clips out of sync.
I am right clicking the clip and setting it's speed to 97%
When I do this all clips further up the timeline move to compensate.
There is a big gap in the timeline between this first bit of footage and the rest of the clips. I intend to fill this with other footage at a later stage. Is there a way to stop the clips shifting when I change the speed of the first clip?

I used to edit with premiere and that's why I'm getting confused. The clumsy way that I've ended up doing it is by putting stuff that I'm happy with in a locked track and changing the speed of clips on their own, in an unlocked track. It's been working but I shall try your way later tom.

I did that too, then I did a migration assistant to a new Mac and ALL of my movies have Source Clip Missing now, even though the original clips are still in the iPhoto Videos. I can stand to re edit one or two projects, but not ALL.

Dragging clips into the movie - iMovie HD

After shooting a clip with the bult-in iSight, when I try to drag the clip into the project, it wont move, and the clip turns grey.
I have no idea what is going on.

The project isn't HD. The sequence is. You can multiple formats in one project. Use Ease Setup to change the preset and then make a new sequence.

Taking clips from itunes movies and putting them into imovie

I'm doing a school project and making a movie trailer and i need to take clips from a movie on my itunes and put it onto imovie so i can take clips from the movie. HELP PLEASE!!!

How did the movie get into iTunes? Does it have digital rights copy protection? I guess you're not seeing the movie when you look in music in the iMovie media browser, is that right?

I am trying to finish a school project about a fieldtrip which we have been on over the past few days and want four clips from the movie I have made to be on in the background while the title comes on the screen for each day.
Can anyone help please? I have seen some plugins but cannot afford to buy them just for this video but am desperate to make it look how I want it!

You might try to use the button windows for your seperate movie clips. These can be moved about and enlarged. Try this site, it does a good job with an overview http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/idvd_5stone.html
The other way if you want only short portions of the four clips you can make them into short quicktime clips and drop them into the dropzones of a theme that has 4 drop zones. You do this by editing your clip (split at playhead) and sharing to QT then put in the drop zone.

How do I recerence Movie Clips on the Main Timeline from inside a class?

Hey everyone, this might be a stupid question but I thought
I'd ask cause it's making me nuts. I'm all of 2 days into AS3
(coming from not using Flash at all in YEARS) so feel free to
consider me ignorant. I do have plenty of application development
experience in other areas though.
I can't seem to create a class that can reference an instance
of a movie clip on my main timeline. I'd post code of what I've
tried but I've gone through so many desperate edits & wild
guesses that it was just garbled junk before I deleted it all.
Basically here's how I figured Flash could work, though maybe
it doesn't work this way at all.
I'm assuming that with AS 3 being so big on being a true
object oriented environment, I wouldn't need to mix my code and
interface together. Preferably I'd be using the Flash authoring
tools just to design my interface. Create a button... place it
somewhere... give it an instance name. Roughly the equivilant of
Apple's InterfaceBuilder for those of you that might be familiar
with Cocoa development. I can see maybe having to put a few lines
of ActionScript onto frame 1 (though really I'm hoping Flash would
have a better method of kicking off the application at this point
that using code tied to frames) to load my classes & such, but
after that I'd like all of my code to be held in external class
files.
So maybe I've got:
Interface.fla - My interface
Button_1
Button_2
TextField_1
Main.as - My main controller class using to handle all of my
applications behavior
SomeClass.as - Some helper Class
SomeOtherClass.as - Some helper Class
Main.as would have instructions in its initialization method
to go ahead & attach events to buttons & initialize
anything else that needs to happen when the application starts.
From there on it would all be objects communicating back &
forth. Button_1 would get clicked with would fire
Main.someMethod(). Main.someMethod() would then do it's thing and
set the value of TextField_1. All very clean & code is very
separated from interface.
Unfortunately I can't for the life of me figure out how AS3
classes reference each other like that. There doesn't seem to be
any kind of a global 'root' or '_root' I can use to locate any
movie clips on the stage. I've searched the help & the web for
any kind of simple tutorial but to no avail. My job has tasked me
with building a flash app for a project but I'd really rather not
have a tone of ActionScript just shoved into frame 1. That just
seems... ugh! (::shudder::)
Can someone maybe point me in the right direction here? I'm
really willing to do my homework but I can't seem to locate the
info I need to get started. Also, is there an ActionScript IRC
channel or something maybe?

I worked with the problem last night and the solution I
started coming to involved creating my own custom document class
based off which extends MovieClip. My thought is that way I have
access to the initialization routine of the timeline itself and
that all of the elements on the main timeline should be
"properties" of my custom class.
Is this correct? Is there a down side to doing this & if
so what is it & why?
Also, just for my reference, the last time I did anything
with ActionScript I think I was using '_root' to target the main
timeline. WHat are the global variable names in AS 3? Is it just
'root' & 'stage' or 'Root' & 'Stage' or what?

I copied the iTunes file from the external drive and it's in both places. I thought all I would need is the iTunes program (which I downloaded to new computer) and my iTunes library file. There must be something else that's missing. My iTunes library looks the same on the new computer as it does when I open it on the external drive. If I click on an iTunes library song from my new computer, it will only play if I have the external drive plugged in.
My back-up drive is a mess. I have multiple copies of music, video, photo, and document files and I don't know how that happened. ={ Obviously, I don't know how to back up stuff properly and there are back-up files extending over a 6- to 8-year period. I think all I did was just drag and drop the main folders from the back-up drive to the same main folders on the C: drive. Also (and I'm kind of fuzzy on this) Windows used to automatically save music files in a folder within my document files (which makes no sense to me). As my Jewish friends would say, "Oy Vey!"

I cannot synch movies to my iPad. This has worked for me in the past. I keep getting an error message that I am not connected to the internet. Yet, I certainly am. How else could I post this message. I can listen to music clips from the iTunes store, fetch my email, and read current newspapers on the internet. I restarted both my iMac and my Ipad and that didnot help.

I completely understand what is happening. I know that you are connected to the Internet. I made the suggestion because I have seen it work in similar circumstances. The Apple iTunes servers can be a bit fussy about things and sometimes rebooting the router clears up this miscommunication between iTunes and your network.
Have you tried signing into your account and then try to sync again. Go to Store>View Account. You will have to enter your password. Then try to sync again. Or try signing out completely in Store>Sign out. Quit iTunes, sign in again and then try to sync again.
Sometimes refreshing settings will help clear up weird problems.

The entire DVD containing Quick Time movies (Final CutExpress project) and slideshow was done in iPhoto. The Final Cut project was rendered prior to export to QT, the slideshow was sent to iDVD withoutrendering. The slideshow with most of the pictures from my still camera incombination with stills from movie clips and some downloaded from the Internet.After burning, the movie playback is perfect but the slideshow is not. The slideshow containing 3 differentkinds of pictures; those from my still camera looks OK; the stills from themovie clips and from the Internet are not. I don’t have much knowledge in this game, but I think NTSCwith frame size 720x480, and the downloaded picture Item Property shows most ofthem are between 400 to 500 x 300 to 600, may be both of them are not suitablefor TV screen while the stills from my still camera looks OK because they are2048x1536. How to keep a Movie Clip on the screen for 5 secs.

I am having trouble with keeping a movie clip on the screen.
I am setting it up to play a movie using the .onPress function. It
is calling the movie but only shows it for a split second. How can
I make the movie stay on the stage for 5 seconds? Here is how I

HitTest for multiple Movie Clip at the same time

I have a movie it is a triangle.I duplicate it and I want to hitTest on the first triangle movie clip and I added 3 different line movie clips on the 3 side of triangle.I tried to write a code something like that.

In the time line, cutaways and titles are supposed to be linked on the top side of movie clips in the time line window. I don't know what I did, but now they are linked to the bottom side. How do I get them up to the top where they belong?

I'm working on a movie in FCP and using cutaways and titles in many places in the timeline. While working on a movie 2 days ago, and I don't know what I did, all the cutaways and titles are now linked to the movie clips from below rather than above. When I "grab" them and drag them up to the top-side, as soon as I "release", they go back down. Along the menu bar, I've check the "view", "modify", "clips", etc., looking for any thing that might refer to appearance of the time line. What must I do to get the cutaways and titles back on top where they belong? The audio clips remained properly-linked to the time line and play properly. The cutaways and titles can be seen but do not play.

I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project. After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline. When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio. I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce, it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio. Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline. I've never experienced this before. Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly? If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.
