Clips out of synch on timeline

I've been editing a film for several months now, and frequently when I open it up I find that the clips on my timeline are all discombobulated. They're moved to different spots, the lengths are all screwed up, and video and audio tracks are often separated and quite far apart. I know I didn't do any of these crazy things. Anybody else ever encounter this problem? It's unbelievably frustrating, especially when I have to go back through THE ENTIRE PROJECT and reset everything.

Um...yes, I'm sure. I'm the only one here. And this is not a joke or anything, it's really happening, and it's driving me insane. If it happens again I really might have a nervous breakdown. Okay, maybe not really, but I'll be thoroughly aggravated.
Anybody have any ideas?

  • Clips out of synch until I pause them?

I have a new iMac (specs in my profile) that has a strange issue.  When I start playing a clip it's out of synch.  If I pause the playback and then start it again, it's back in synch.
This happens every time.  I thought it might be a hard disc going to sleep but I have it set not to.
This happens whenever I've stopped playing back for a couple of minutes.  SOMETHING'S going to sleep, I just don't know what.
btw, I have the app on the internal SSD and the media on the internal hard disc.

Jennifer, the only way we can have any chance to successfully troubleshoot problems remotely is if you approach this in a systematic manner.  If you don't understand any of the questions, let us know.  StudioX asked what the signal path is.    go to view:  audio playback to see what the setting is.
You might try resetting your fcp preferences:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2491
Do you have any 3rd party utilities installed on your system, in particular anything that might have an impact on audio?  Do you have any 3rd party fcp or audio plug ins installed on your system?
You might try creating a new account and see if that makes a difference:

  • Cs3-cs4 upgrade clips out of synch

Working on a cs3 PPro project, going very well!  Updated to SC4 to take advantage of its improved 3D modeling capabilities.  However I note that now my sc3 project, once set up in cs4 is now out of synch.  Edits aren't where I placed them - I assumed you could transfer cs3 to cs 4 no problems.

Normally, CS3 Projects do translate to CS4 Projects well. General wisdom is to complete in the version that was used to start, but I see your point on wanting to move up here.
Maybe give the specifics of this Project and its Assets, as there could be something there.
Also, did you Open the CS3 Project into CS4, or did you Import it. Might want to try the other way, depending on what you did.
    Good luck,

  • Movie Clips Actions Get Out Of Synch With Audio

My movie is five about minutes long with audio and an offscreen timeline move clip containing action script to control other movie clips or play the root directory.   After about a minute or so, movie clips get out-of-synch with the audio, apparently its getting bogged down.
My swf file doesn't seem that big, about 2.2MB and my move clips aren't that complex, although up to three levels deep.
My version is Flash 8 Professional and my laptop was on the high end about 18 months ago.
Am I missing something or expecting too much from Flash?
    Thanks,
Mike (who seems to know enough to be dangerous)

  • Clip audio and video playback out of synch

I've noticed that everything in FCP X is slightly out of synch. Just enough to be noticeable. I thought it might have been the time taken for the sound to travel the length of the church (recording from a camera mic) but I shot some green screen yesterday and even that is out.
The same hardware was used ok with FCE-4 - the Audio i/f is FW-400 and on same bus as FW drives.

Hey Andy,  (cue whistling theme music)
Thanks for your informed opinion. Interesting that Apple released FCPX in it's current state rather than wait for the release of Lion. Seems like the core technologies now bundled with the app would make a significant difference running natively.
I'm an audio guy... the next release of Logic Audio is going to be version X, I'm just hoping it's not going to be Garageband Pro.
The reason I was expressing doubts about an OS upgrade making a noticeable difference is.... I heard the same thing about Snow Leopard. As it stands now I have two clients trying to run the latest version of Logic Pro on the current release of SL (10.6.8), the results are not good, the Logic Pro forum has many users unable to get Logic to even boot without crashing.. I'm waiting to hear from support. It seems like the OS is ahead of app development and things are breaking.

  • Imovie 5.0.2, Stuttering playback and out of synch audio with visual.

I have edited a movie on Imovie HD 5.0.2, it is about 50 mins long. When I came to record back onto my Sony DCR-HC42E camcorder (I don't have a combo drive on my Imac) the playback is not acceptable. It stutters, freezes and after a while the audio becomes out of synch with the visual. The playback is generally not smooth enough either. I have updated to the latest operating system. I have chosen standard quality playback from the preferences option and am very frustrated at the poor results.
I have 20 GB of space left on the computer.
If anyone can suggest a solution I would be most grateful.

Mark, if your Mac has just 256MB RAM it's possible adding more RAM will improve playback and your export to the camera. I wouldn't bet on it, but it's certainly worth a try. (You need more RAM anyway, so it's a good idea nevertheless.)
There may be another way to successfully export your project to your camera. Even projects that "stutter" when played in iMovie often export correctly to QuickTime. (The export to QT is not time sensitive, unlike the export to the camera.) You should be able to export your project to a Full Quality DV movie, one of iMovie's built-in export options. Exporting to QuickTime "flattens" the movie, making it easier to play.
You would then import THAT movie to a new iMovie project. That project will probably export successfully to the camera.
You may want to test this by exporting the first few minutes of the project. (To export a group of clips instead of the entire project, select them and use the checkbox button "Share selected clips only" that you'll see in the export dialog.)
You're running low on disk space, so here's a trick to avoid iMovie having to make yet ANOTHER copy of the Full Quality movie when importing it. The movie will be about 12GB; it won't be small.
Instead of importing the Full Quality movie to a new project, create the new iMovie project, Quit iMovie, open the project package (Control-click on the project icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu) then drop the Full Quality movie into the Media folder. Re-open the project. The Full Quality movie appear in the iMovie trash. Open the Trash window and drag the clip to the Timeline. Save, then export to your camera.

  • Why is audio out of synch when I share (export) to mp4, BluRay (FCPX 10.0.9)?

Audio that is carefully synched to the video in the timeline appears off by several frames once I share the files to Bluray or mp4. I believe, but will double check that I exported to DVD without this issue. Any suggestions for fixes would be greatly appreciated.  Paul

Sorry it took a few days to reply Russ.  I wanted a chance to go over the videos carefully.
It does not drift further out of synch, and the synch issue only affects a few short segments of a 42 minute video, one near the beginning, another near the middle and another nearer the end. The segments that have the issue ones were ones I overdubbed audio from an external recorder (Zoom H6) that I used when the video was shot.  However, there are many more segments in the video that were similarly overdubbed using the Zoom recordings where synch is not a problem.
On the weekend I tried making compound clips of the problematic segments in the hope that it might accomplish something but it didn't make a difference at all in the Blueray disk I burned-which I played on my aging Samsung Bluray player.
Here's another interesting fact about this problem:  all of the mp4 files, I discovered, play perfectly in synch on my Mac.  It is only on a PC that some parts are out of synch.  Should I be using Quicktime files for PC instead of MP4?
Thanks for your interest in my little problem Russ.

  • Video Falling Out of Synch During Import?

I am importing some video w/ linked audio into iMOvie--the tape appears to be fine, the audio is in synch with the video there. When I complete the import and then play the clip, the video does not appear for a few seconds, but the audio is present. So by the time the video does appear, it is horribly out of synch. How do I fix this? What could cause this to happen in the first place?

    Hi
Most common origin to this is.
    • Camera set on 12-bit audio
    • Camera re-set after battery change (to 12-bit audio)
Go into the menu on/of the Camera and select 16-bit audio
    • Camera recorded in LP-mode (90 min on a 60min tape) - AVOID THIS - A real trouble maker ! ! !
Set Camera into SP-mode (60 min on a 60min tape)
    Your old movie
Set iMovie to import as one large clip - Not as individual clips (in iMovie pref)
    • Now import Your material to TimeLine
    • DIRECTLY after this select the video-clip
    • goto Advanced menu and down to Extract audio
This might work and keep in sync.

  • PREMIERE PRO cs3 & cs5 - audio out of synch by 6 frames after export

i have never had formal training on adobe premiere, and therefore when i am working with my students it is basically down to expereince i have gained by myself.
with cs3, we always worked on the basis that it would always export the audio out of synch with the video by 6 frames so they would routinely have the audio tracks on two separate tracks, one for editing and one for exporting which was offset +6 frames.
when we made the transition to cs5 and new kit i was stunned to see that the synch issues were still there. and since a quick google yielded very little evidence that others shared this issue i thought it must be something i am doing wrong after years of bad habits learned on the fly.
so here is my workflow, where am i going wrong and why is it always out of synch?
    open cs5
choose an editing format. (this varies but the synch issue is always the same)
    import content
    edit
export (normally as a microsoft avi, with no compression which i later convert into quicktime compressed with ANIMATION)
i teach on an animation course so normally the content we import is a sequence of stills such as jpg or tiff, but we also capture stuff on dslrs too
the timeline colour is normally yellow, which is fine at standard def, but larger def we will render workspace to turn it green
the editing format depends on our target format. the current project is 720 hd
the export as avi with no compressor i suspect to be a weak link in this work flow, but the problem remains if i export as anything else so....
now as an additional point on the matter, the current project we have had people miming to an audio clip which we played live for their performance. the audio blips were aligned on the timeline with the audio blips from the edit
but after rendering out, the footage is out of synch by 6 frames. it has always been this way.
any thoughts? i know i must be doing something wrong, but the issue is consistant across different computer, running different OS and different versions of PREM...so either i am doing it wrong or premiere is fundamentally broke.....i suspect its me though

is there a logical reason for opting for a preset which is the lowest common denominator rather than a highest? is it not better to work at the best res possible?
does it matter either way? because i have often created 1080p content and worked in a 1024/576 edit environment only to later export at 1080p with no loss of quality?
i create the avi and then open this in quicktime to export to the desired formats.
now that you posted that comment i cant believe i have never done the simple trouble shoot of 'at what point does it go out of synch'
files are too big to playback uncompressed though.
i know it is a workflow issue and not a prem issue because no one else seems to have the problem.
im going to run some tests
    thanks, will report back

  • Imovie soundtrack goes out of synch

I have had this problem a few times, and I would love any help I can get. I have edited movies that I have stored on tape. When I bounce them back into imovie to incorporate them into other projects or to make a dvd comp the sound track starts to ride out of synch with the video. I am not entirely sure what is doing it but I suspect it had something to do with titles added into clips. Maybe a font over the vid and not over black. I am not sure. Any ideas?

I am no expert but have been fighting out of sync problem for months. First, the best advice you've been given is 16 bit. But, if like me, you only have the out of sync Mov on tape this is what I had to do:
Import back into iMov, correct the sync, then share back to tape in 16 bit and make sure at all times cam is in 16 bit mode.
Now correcting sync is a lot easier said than done but this is what worked for me a few days ago. It was obvious that audio narration and lip-sync were lagging the video and by using frame advance from stop I counted an even 3 seconds (90 frames). I then extracted the audio, put it in timeline line under video and could see the first 3 or more seconds were blank. I selected (highlighted) the audio, clipped 3 secs off the front, and dragged the remainder 3 sec to the left. This corrected clips 1 and 2 (9.5 min each) but left the 3 minute clip 3 out of sync in the other direction. So I highlited the audio for clip 3 and dragged it back full right. It was only off about a second+ and the small gap had no audio, but none had existed there anyhow. I then shared back to tape, found sync ok and have since imported back, still in sync. The one move I am unsure of is whether or not I used "lock audio at playhead". Good luck!

  • Importing 24p audio falls out of synch

    Hello,
I was just capturing two tapes of a musc video, using a panasonic GS500 to import, shot in 24p on a DVX100, and captured on the standard DV NTSC 48 kHz preset. When I watched my clips afterwards, I found that the audio falls out of synch in the longer clips. I don't understand why this has happened, because I thought the 24p was still recorded on the tape as DV NTSC but with a 3:2 pulldown effect on it. My question is how can I fix this importing problem so it doesn't fall out of synch again when I re-import?
    Thank You,
    Kyle

This can happen with long captures. Better Camera/deck seems to be key here.
For now, you could select the clips that drift and do a 'File'/Export as AIFF...48khz/16bit. Then re-link/replace the new audio with the original video files.
Recapturing in shorter clip length may avoid funky Aud Rates. Either way, you'll likely need to create new multi-clips and edit with those.
Within current multi-clip sequences, you can control-shift/drag left or right on an angle in the viewer to bring the sync back in line. This should only affect the angle/clip following a cut, and not the sync prior to a cut.
If you've already made many cuts througout the timeline, you could use the 'slip' tool on out of sync clips after you've collapsed the multiclip.
    Hope that helps,
    Kevan

  • Video out of synch with audio

Sometimes when I use my camera the audio is out of synch with the video.
This has happened when I use the 8mm apps as well.
Is there a way to fix this or make it not happen at all?
    Evan Jacobs

    Sorry that didn't help, Jon.
This kbase search makes me wonder if perhaps you have some kind of conflict with something you are doing in Logic or some other AV Pro App?
If you can rule that out, too, somebody else might have suggestions. It may help them to know if you have exactly the same problem when you try to record movie clips with some other application.
    I have no other ideas.

  • Video and audio out of synch after export

    Hello guys,
I have 5 minutes long video on timeline.
1 audio and 3 video layers.
All looks good, but once I export it as QuickTime self contained movie (current settings) to my desktop, video and audio is out of synch.
Any ideas what it might be wrong?
    Thank you for any advise.

  • How to I get the clip to sync to the timeline while editing?

I have filmed short one-minute clips from a speech and am trying to edit them into a continuous movie.  Each clip has segments that I'd like to clip out (e.g. coughing, stuttering, etc.) but as I preview the clips in the timeline window, they do not correlate with the video preview.  For example, after a clip has long run out on the timeline, the video and sound of it are still playing in the preview window.  I have already expanded the timeline to the maximum.  Please help.

What version of iMovie, what device (iPad or iPhone)?

  • How to zoom in and out on the effects timeline on premiere cc?

I can zoom out on the project timeline with alt+mouse wheel but I can figure out how to do it on the effects panel and the project zoom doesn't seem to effect it.

You need to Un Pin the clip first.
Click on the Panel Menu in the Effect Controls and uncheck Pin to Clip.
