Clock out of Sync

My clock is behaving erratically. Noticed it was almost two hours fast even though it's set to automatic/
24 hr New York Time Zone. Any ideas?

Turn on airplane mode then turn back off (force a new handshake with towers). This can happen at times if a tower (but more likely a repeater in tall building enviroment) has it's clocks off. Your time gets set from a tower (or repeater) upon handshake (after having no signal, won't happen during hand off I believe)

  • IMac clock out of sync

So, since updating to Mavericks, I've noticed 2 issues.
First is the clock goes out of sync by about 5 minutes each day. I'm comparing it with my iPhone 5 and I know it's right as the iMac drops back to the correct time when I update from Date & Time in System Preferences.
Second is an issue with the switch user cube thing. I don't have Guest User on and it does this weird thing where it'll rotate the Desktop when updating things like AirPort Extreme settings from AirPort Utility and just now I updated VLC and it did the same thing. When it did it with AirPort Utlity the first time, it didn't switch back and I had to lock the screen and wake it up for it to display the Desktop again. Just showed a blank, white screen with nothing on it but the mouse cursor...
I have reset my PRAM yet for the clock issue but I believe it's software related as I've not had any issues prior to installing Mavericks.
Everything else seems to be okay other than some icons on the Desktop not showing previews for images or videos.
Anyone else experienced something similar? I know there's an update due shortly so hopefully that'll fix the problems...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Heartbeat time outs some times caused by clocks-out-of-sync?

Heartbeat timeouts are usually caused by the java socket communication between the master and its slaves being slow (or dead).
This slowness in turn can be caused by a system being overloaded, something than can easily happen when we're running out of memory.
Memory problems can be caused by running against file system cache, which in turns eats up all memory, etc.
Some times the java socket connection between the master and remote hosts just is slow, also causing heartbeat timeouts.
Today I had a case where, in a multi-host situation, one of the remote hosts had his clock set five minutes early.
On the master this resulted in lots of 'slow getmessage' warnings telling you that it took longer than five seconds between the time the message was sent and that it was received. These timings use both the master and the remote host's current clock values.
In above case that always meant that every message was considered five minutes late.
Then, further on during the test the remote system's clock was reset and increased by five minutes.
That was it for the heartbeat timer, because it also uses the system's clock values.
So, if you run into heartbeat problems again, check your clocks.
In your 'xxxx-0.stdout.html' file you can verify, within reason, the clock settings, for instance:
    11:52:19.013 11:47:17.605 task_run_all(): 395 tasks
    11:57:39.004 11:57:39.000 Slow getMessage: hd2-0 1957 301404 REQUEST_SLAVE_STATISTICS
The first time value is the timestamp from the master at the time the message was received, the second is from the slave at the time that the message was sent, and as you can see, there is a five minute difference. The next message shows the now changed clock values.
The important message of this: make sure your clocks are synchronized in a multi-host environment.
    Henk.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Clock out of sync when roaming

I went abroad for a few weeks and the clock never synced with network time. Because of that, the time was never correct and could gain upto 2 minutes each time I rebooted. I have an O2 Pre at version 1.4.1.

    Hello and welcome to the forums;
When roaming, you can turn off network time and if you run into a situation where your time is off, you can then manually set it.
There is also a homebrew app that can sync your device to internet time (much the same way most PCs update time) however as this is homebrew, we are unable to offer additional support for installation or how to use it. www.precentral.net will have all the information you need, and a great support community that can help with installation and troubleshooting if you choose that route.
    Hope this helps,

  • Clock out of sync again

ok, the clock, i cant get it right.
using KDE, i cant seem to get my clock to display what i want.  since the new deprecation for the timezones, i have had problems.  i went through the entire tutorial a couple times, and have made manual adjustments to files, and clock alike.
my clock is still about 7 hrs behind, which is my timezone, PST (los angeles) -8GMT, with daylight savings time is -7GMT, or vice versa.
    anybody have any foolproof suggestions?

the error i was referring to  was the time being displayed incorrectly, i mispoke.  i had it set at UTC, and with my timezone set to Los Angeles, it looks no different than when i set the HW clock to Los Angeles, and system clock to Los Angeles.
i guess i can go through it again.
    ok, after entering this
    grep ^HARDWARECLOCK /etc/rc.conf
    hwclock --utc
    HARDWARECLOCK="UTC"
    grep ^TIMEZONE /etc/rc.conf
    cp /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago /etc/localtime
this set my current time to 5 hours behind, and my UTC to -12 hours behind, this is probably because the time was wrong to begin with.
then using KDE i set the time to current, which is 1:44pm
    now
    hwclock --show
    reflects 1:44pm
by now im a bit confused.
i thought HW clock, was my cmos, not arch.
    # date
    Mon Aug 1 13:46:47 CDT 2011
now next time i edit my cmos clock which i alter my systems over here regularly, i will have to remember that i just changed my lifetime format from localtime to UTC, and have to first figure out if daylight savings time is in effect, to see if Pacific time is -7 or -8 currently, then add that to my local time to get UTC time.  see how confusing setting CMOS to UTC is....
ok, i will admit the above was sort of a rant and to highlight the problems one may run into...
    now, back to square 1,
    ok
    # hwclock --show
    displays
    Mon 01 Aug 2011 01:50:57 PM CDT -0.172132 seconds
    and
    # date
    displays
    Mon Aug 1 13:52:03 CDT 2011
but since i have a timezone set, why is HW clock (aka cmos) displaying the same as my desktop clock, when i set the HW clock for UTC?

I have read a number of forum treads and I'm at my wits end.  I want to capture in HD edit it in real time and export to DVD, BlueRay and Flash. I have spent hours on support and updated every driver and configuration setting that I know. PLEASE will someone tell me what do I need to do to get this to work?
Is it the DELL? Do I go to a Mac? (Ironic that most adobe tutorials are on Macs) Do I need a different solution? I'm going crazy!  Maybe it's me and I'm capturing and creating sequences all wrong. Please provide a workflow that is working for you. Let me know if you need more specifics. Thank you in advance!

    2. I did a search for HDVSplit and came up with this site. http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm Is this correct? Is there a released version?

I am editing material from Nikon d7000 in Final Cut Pro Academic.
I converted the files in Mpeg Streamclip to Apple Pro Res 422. I recorded the sound separately as .wav file. When I put those files to the timeline I sync the sound and movie files and they look fine. They are in sync for the first minutes and then slowly goes out of sync.
Has anyone experienced this and knows why this happens?
    Karl

Unless your audio recorder is driven by a proper timecode clock, there is no way you are going to keep your recordings in sync.  You might get lucky a few times, but that's mostly luck.  Even weak batteries in the audio recorder can slow your audio.
This is only going to result in a tiny drift at worst, even over a long duration. If the recorders are both digital, you're more likely than not to "get lucky." Sample accurate? No. Frame accurate? probably, or at least close enough that nobody will notice. ****, there was no timecode clock on my 16mm camera, just a crystal to govern the motor speed. it never had a problem staying in dead-on sync with either a nagra or a DAT recorder, neither of which had timecode.
If someone is noticing drift, it's probably pretty bad, and it's most likely because of sample or frame rate mismatches.
My question is - How long is the clip, and how far out of sync is it? Karl, If you can give a ballpark number, it should be possible to guess at which kind of problem you have.
One that's bit us repeatedly is having the wrong Easy Setup selected when importing audio into FCP. If the Easy Setup is PAL, for example, but you're working on an NTSC project most things just work fine, but the audio import happens at the PAL frame rate and causes pretty severe drift over time.

  • Voice recorded on Gb and video on DSLR out of sync.

I recorded a cooking demo on video and captured the voice on GB and the image on a Nikon HD Dslr 300s at 25 fps. ( video setting to PAL ) When I brought them into FCPX to edit the audio and visual are out of sync ie. after about 30 sec the audio is about a sec later than the image.

This happen sometimes because either the camera and mac are running at different clock cycles or problem when importing or exporting of the media . The only thing you can do about it now is adjust the speed of the audio or video. You can do a bunch of math to figure it out of trial and error with speed adjustment. Also short clips will be less of a problem so you may want to split clips up some.

  • Live multitrack recordings drift out-of-sync with video

This is the second time in two years that I've encountered this intermittent problem, and I can't figure out what causes it or how to solve it. I made a video recording of a musical group and simultaneously made an 8 channel multitrack recording of the same performance using Audition and a MOTU 8pre. When I try to combine the mixdown from Audition with the video file in Premiere, the audio from the two sources starts to drift out of sync after about two minutes. This doesn't seem like it should be possible, as both are digital sources. Has anyone else ever encountered this? What is the cause? Is there a solution?
What makes this more mysterious is that I've also used the same technique on previous occasions without experiencing this problem.

"You say that there is a fix for the division problem. If you don't mind, could you tell me what that might be? "
The reason 48k was chosen as THE sample rate for broadcast video is that there is a straight easy (integer) relationship between frame & sample rates for all used frame rates bar 29.9700299700.......... [yup it's an infinite unresolvable number] where though not simple it was still a lot easier to resolve if not perfectly but to a tolerable/usable level the arithmetic problems. Good news is this happens automatically in the editing software so long as enter the true known info IE 48k for audio 29.97 drop frame for Video. Conversely it won't {probably} if you choose 44.1.
Getting 29.97 in sync is complex however and may involve using .1% "pull-up's & down's Basically the Color frame rate in the States is .1% less than the B&W rate of 30fps. If video is actually at 29.97 but counted as though 30fps there will be a little over 2 sec error per hr.
tell me what was the diffeence in length you got per hr min or whatever?
One solution of many is to use an actual sample rate of .1% greater than 48k IE 48048k & it gets even more complex if using timecode
    Word clock
It's a 5volt square wave, carried on a BNC cable, used solely for audio syncing. No video equipment understands word clock.
Pro video equipment can use video sync aka Black & Burst - a feed of which also using a BNC cable can link / tie the clocks of a number of cameras and also some audio equipment so they are absolutely in sync (unfortunately for you not the Motu 8pre which as far as I can see has no external sync possibilities)
    Your "workround"
yes of course regardless of what is causing the problem, a time stretch / compression of the appropriate amount can make the pic & sound the same length and so joy.

  • Audio out of sync - [24p & 44.1khz mp3]

I have a very strange problem of audio going at a slower rate than the video.
All the video was captured at on a Panasonic in 24p mode.
All the audio was recorded on a Marantz recorder with a flash drive (mp3).
Actors are sitting during the takes with a shotgun microphone relatively stationary a few feet away.
The first few takes of video and audio match perfectly.
On the other takes the audio progressively gets slower as the takes going on.
The audio is significantly out of sync by the time the takes are over.
Each take is about 10 minutes long.
The audio starts to slow at about one minute into the take.
The audio does NOT sound slow, it is just lagging out of sync.
    What the heck is this?
    Help anyone, thanks,
    Jason

NEXT time, record separate audio with a device that can generate timecode. Timecode is the clock that keeps video at an exact frame rate. Mp3 does not have a corresponding clock.
Since the audio is slower, just find a silent spot and pull out the necessary frames to pull it up until it slips again. rinse and repeat.
Used to have to do this with film every now and again, with wild sound.

  • Ical clock not in sync with computer clock

1.My Ical clock is out of sync with the computer clock
    2. the Ical clock is not adjusting to Daylight saving time
    3. It is also not working as a 24hour clock

I am having a similar problem. My question is right here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16581189#16581189
I have 11 calendars but only 6 show up. I assumed that 6 was the limit for some reason, so it's interesting to see the disparity.

  • Hihats off out of sync

I have my hihats playing simply on 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th beat. At a certain point in my song when the snares kick in, the hihat goes off beat.
Everything I've created in the piano roll is ignored. It just does its own thing. like the midi is out of sync or something. Why is this happening?
Also I've got the message "error while trying to synchronize audio and midi" popping up every 5 seconds. Even now that the message doesn't come up I can't seem to understand when my hihat is going wonky.

Assuming you have one check the clock source of your audio interface. It should be internal. Are there tempo changes in the song? Are you really still using 10.4.1? 10.4.11 was more stable for me.

  • Audio out of sync

I have 2 Xl2s. Both running at the same time taping a performance. One is using tape, the other a HD recorder. When I do the capture of both streams, I am unable to sync the audio and video. Something I have done many times before with other cameras. The offending capture is the one that came from tape.
I am shooting 60i, 16:9, standard 16 bit audio, everything default. The weird thing is is that the audio is out of sync for its own video clip! And it seems to get futher out of sync the farther in the clip I play.
I imported as DV 3x2 anamorphic using a Sony DSR 11 deck.
    Is my camera tweaked?

Read the bit at the end about unlocked audio.

This article claims FCP has a switch to deal with the 48 KHz vs 48.009 KHz. I don't know it.

There are kluge work arounds, but they are not ideal. When I have to deal with this stuff I keep my captures short, which doesn't seem to be an option for you.
Another trick is the change the speed of the audio very slightly to compensate for the drift.
I hope all this helps. I was burned by this with a project four years ago, so I know how frustrating it is.

  • Audio out of sync when playing HD content

    Hey
I've got an issue with the audio gets out of sync when playing some HD content. I've tried to make sure the video is stored on the Apple TV so it can't be the network connection.
I've also tried a full reset of the unit, but still no luck.
But it's all video clips that has this problem. Even though they encoded the same and so on, some videos audio get out of synced and some don't.
Also have a problem with m4v files locking the ATV (and iTunes for that matter), but renaming it to a mp4 file seems to solve it. But if someone has a fix for that as well I'd much appreciate it.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jeaz
EDIT: I have tried to use component cables instead of HDMI, but the problem remains. Of course also tested the video on my Mac and no problems. A quick pause and resume usually solves it, but only for a minute or so.

What sort of specification is the video content? Is spec too high for AppleTV.
It may be that it's some kind of bug in AppleTV's playback, that the Mac does not exhibit, or an issue with encoding that causes a problem only on AppleTV.
If you are encoding video and using same as source for the frame rate, it may be better in some cases trying explicitly to specify the frame rate required in case automatic frame rate conversion is introducing some kind of timing issue. Test a short clip to see.
