Cloing HD reality check please.

HD on my Imac g5 is failing-S.M.A.R.T. error. I have a replacement but I want to clone my drive to save all the data a programs that are installed on the existing disc.
Q1: Since I have a new drive, would it be logical to buy an external enclosure and clone it drive to drive that way?
Q2: I've looked at Fry's and all of their SATA enclures are USB only, no firewire. Will USB work for this application?
Q3: Here's where it get's weird (this question is precipitated by the fact that on the day after Xmas, the line at Fry's was ridiculus)-I have a couple of old PC's laying around, don't suppose I could install the new HD into one of them and have it act as a power source for external drive facilitate the transfer? I'm guessing the firewire port on the PC would not be active with no installed op system. Crazy idea, yes?

Rather than answer your very good questions, I am indicating one method of backing up (mine) that works very well.
I make bootable clones of my iMacs on an external firewire drive using SuperDuper ($28 at www.shirt-pocket.com).
However, your profile does not indicate what OS X you are running. As of this posting, SuperDuper only runs on OS X 10.4 and earlier (not OS X 10.5 yet).
I "believe" that on the Intel-based Macs, you can use a USB drive for cloning - that is not true for G5s and G4s. Firewire drives are very reasonable these days (I bought a 250 GB one from the Apple store for under $100), so I, personally, would not buy a USB drive.

I surprised nobody answered you yet. If your main goal is working with photography or photos, you should get the Macbook Pro 15" 2011 i7 model. The 13" MBP has a really low screen resolution compared to all other laptops these days 1200x800. The 15" model is 1440x900 in the stock configuration. The 13" does not have enough real estate on the screen to be useful for photo editing. Also, it lacks a discrete graphics card. You must rely solely on the Intel HD 3000 internal graphics.
If you get either 15" model, the cheaper one has an AMD HD 6490m discrete card and the high end model has the AMD HD 6750m. You can still use the Intel HD 3000 to save battery life, but the 15" models give you more pixels on the screen and much better graphics processing.
The new Intel HD 3000 is not bad, it is "good enough"... but "good enough" for now will be out of date "sooner than later". The 15 inch models provide much more flexibility and are much more future proof. I owned the original Core Duo Macbook in 2006 and it had the same 1280x800 resolution 5 years ago. It was never enough for serious work.
Also you could consider the 2011 Macbook Air if you only care about price and don't want the discrete graphics card. There is a 13" model with 1440x900 resolution and it has the option for i7 and comes standard with a 128GB or 256GB SSD on the top model. All models except the lowest end have 4GB of RAM standard too.

Connecting guitar to line in - reality check

Hi all, just looking for a reality check. I tried plugging in my acoustic guitar directly to the line-in yesterday, and found it was very quiet even at max volume. After reading some of the posts here, it seems perhaps that a little preamp is in order. If I use an acoustic amp wtih a line out, should that give me sufficient signal to be able to record satisfactorily? I have tried (i think) all the settings in System Preferences as far as line in and audio/MIDI.
Also, since its a mono 1/4" plug, should i be sure to use a mono 1/8" adapter? Only one I had was stereo, and it occurred to me that might be splitting the signal somehow.
total newbie to mac and recording, really love the forums here.. one of my big factors for making The Switch.

Hmmm, I assume you mean "Plug" and not "jack", yes?
and my adapter is a 1/4 female to 1/8 male stereo.
Okay, I was betting that the 1/4 female jack was a 1/4" stereo jack, in which case it wouldn't matter at all.
If it actually IS a 1/4" mono to 1/8" stereo, I don't think it should matter with a decent signal, though you could create a stereo track, or record to two separate tracks, if you wanted (keeping in mind that it still won't actually BE stereo, it'll just be dual mono).

Reality Check

I ussually do not like commericals, but I have to tell you I just love the new reality check commerical! Why? Because it very accutely discribes how I feel about my hot spot service I am getting! So fustrated, have had my 5spot ac30 bc7d for years, but lately I have had so much trouble getting on the internet. I am an over the road truck driver and use my hot spot every where, lately near big cities I can not hook up to get my yahoo e-mail, check Facebook let alone play Facebook games. I contacted customer service a couple weeks ago when I was just outside Detroit, MI. We did the speed test and one way was good, but the other failed. She wrote up a service complaint, but I have not heard any thing. Today I am just outside Augusta, GA and it is so slow. I am grandfathered in under the unlimited plan and know my device is only 3G, but things are getting worse! Been a customer since the mid 80's, but seriously thinking on tiring an other carrier! No complaints on my phone service, but your internet service stinks. I have read others comments and it all seems like the same story using a phone or a hot spot or jet pack device. Seems to me that would point to your service!

I know what you mean. I've been seeing this commercial every time I watch Hulu and I'm starting to get somewhat frustrated. I've had verizon for almost 7 years now and I recently upgraded to the Motorola Razr Max. I've loved this phone since I got it (I was living in SoCal at that time) and of course in the store it worked perfectly but as soon as I got back home the service was not as good. Since I've now moved to Southern Texas the service has only worsened. I've taken it to the local verizon store and what do you know it worked well in their store but at my apartment I barely get 3 bars and I never get the 4G I'm paying for, I even started paying for additional data since they removed my unlimited when I upgraded and because the connection is so bad that my phone times out when trying to load a webpage as simple as Google, this only wastes my data . As far as my work goes, I just stopped bringing it since I can't even make or receive phone calls there.
What bugs me the most is that verizon continues to advertise that they have service in both of these areas where clearly they don't.

Link is not working for one role. how to check please guide.

I have a link under document flow in offer( opportunity) where for one role sales support user the link is not happening. I have checked for other role its working fine.I understand that for this role the link will not work as per the role maintianed.
But where this link got maintained and how i will be able to check which link is tagged to which profile.

Please check the navigation bar profile from your business role.
Then go to the navigation bar profile settings, you can find the details settings there.
If it is a link under some work center, you need to start from the work center.
If it is a direct link, then start from the derect link group.

I didn't see any evidence of a KeyLogger on here, But, that doesn't mean there isn't one installed If you are really worried about it use your Mountian Lion Disc and put it in an external USB SUPERDRIVE and erase and re-download the operating System press the C Key when you put the disk in and choose erase and Install. You will loose everything you have on yoour Air though.
I also recommend you purchase a External USB 2 terabyte storage drive

2nd try and installation still fails at filesystem check PLEASE HELP

This is my second install of Arch.....and it failed again. It said it could not locate the super block for /root. I used the by-label naming scheme and had a /boot, swap, /root and /home directory. /root and /home were both ext4, /boot was ext2. For some reason when checking file systems it could not locate the superblock on /dev/disk/by-label/root. When i tried to use the by-label to replace the superblock it could not be found so i had to use /dev/sda3 (which was /root) I tired several different superblocks (located with systemrescuecd-testdisk) with no success. obviously i am doing something wrong and i would really like to fix it....when i try to access /etc/fstab it says permission denied....i was going to try and rename them by uuid but if i cant get in here i dont know how i would. i already got the uuid for each partition its just a matter of assigning it in fstab now i think.......i really dont wanna give up on arch so please help me out.

...Wait a sec. i am not going to make fan of you.but i must ask this for sure..
you know? "/" (pronounce root) is not /root. you need / . Did you make / ? if you dont have / you cant set /root as a system. i dont know what is the matter of superblock by the post (no enough info). well, i am asking where is the / because you didnt mention this at all. maybe you created / and call it /root?
try it more simple. you only need / and swap partition to install(after you finish installation you can make rest of partitions if you have space)
the point of Arch installation is you better finish it as simple as you can, then setup others after you boot from Archlinux.
Arch installer is far from perfect. (just it is enough to complete installation)

interested to know if it is backwards compatible with earlier
browsers. This
morning I did validate the code in HTML 1.0 and everything
checks out.

That Mac has been affected by MacPaw "CleanMyMac". Read below.
It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.
There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.
Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system. Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.

To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device. The procedure is identical for Mountain Lion.

Spell Check - Please add!

Please add the ability to spell check (similiar to MS word) in UDF's and other locations where text is entered. We link UDF's to printed forms and often they contain spelling errors - we look like morons.

How do I change the default language for spell-checker please?

I have seen the instructions below but cannot find the Personalization section?
I currently have a US English spell-checker, I need a UK English one.
Changing The Default Language
Make sure you are on your homescreen.
Tap on the Settings app to open the Settings App.
Scroll to the Personalization section.
Tap on Language.

Have just found that if you select Install Language Pack but then, do NOT download it, just below and to the right of "Download Now" is "View other versions".
Click on that and the second item is Version28.0
Hover your mouse on that and you get " + Add to Firefox" - so select that.

How can I find out how many checkboxes are checked, please!

Hello everyone,
I have been at it for hours and pretty much cannot think straight and would highly apprecaite your help on this. I have an array called myArr which has 5 elements in it. I then generate checkboxes and the number of checkboxes are matched with the myArr.length(); I would like to be able to find out what checkboxes are check/selected before moving to the next screen. User will need to click on a "NEXT' button in order to move to the next screen. Next button is disabled until user selects the checkbox(s).

1 Pix 515e
2 3550 24 SMI conneted via 2 sx GBICs and fiber patch.
1 1121 WAP
Adding:
2 3550 24 SMI
1 3550 48 SMI
1 3550 12G (Layer 3) switch
6 SX GBICs
and fiber patches.

I assume there is a distance issue that requires fibre, otherwise you could use cheaper 1000baseT switches (e,g. 3750).
You have 3 GBICs in the 3550-12G. I would try and connect all 4 downstream 3550's directly to the 3550-12G core switch so that you maintain a constant switch diameter.
Note that you can also run dual links from the 4 access switches back to the core for the cost of some additional GBICS and fibre patch leads.
How come the two 3550-24-SMI switches in the middle of the access layer have three GBICs? Are you planning on linking those two directly together (if so, don't).
