Clone/Heal is powerful!!

Aperture and Lightroom both have cloning/spotting tools.
IMO the clone/heal tool in LR is superior.
Can Aperture do this? NOPE!
Original straight from D2x(jpg):
Added a dark vignette, desaturated all colors and brought back just orange and some red for a quick non destructive hand tint, but the orange powercord, being orange stuck out..
11 healing spots and one clone spot in LR:

GRANTED, PS/CS3 would do a better job, but IMO this is good enough and only took a minute. Plus it kept me out of PS/CS3

Add to this the ability to sync these edits across photos (not that this photo is a good example of this) and you have a very powerful tool. For example, cleaning up the stuck pixels in images from my first digital camera is dead simple.
Actually, I think the power comes from how simple and easy the gestures are that do the work you want to do. I'm Photoshop disabled, and probably always will be. Lr has given me the Good Enough tools I can actually figure out to do what I need to do: make a photo look good to my eye.
The rest is just craft, art and opinion, if you ask me.

  • Why won't the Clone/Heal Tool remove a white spot?

After being embarrassed by failing to check the Clone/heal tool to make sure the opacity was set correctly, I am encouraged to ask another question that was not affected by the appropriate correction that made the tool work fine under most circumstances. However, using LR4 (and previously LR 3) )iMac 27 quad) at odd intervals, certain images show up with a single white spot, usually on a blue background, that cannot be removed or cloned with the LR Clone/heal tool. It can be removed with the clone tool in PS but not in LR. I don't know where the spots come from. They sometimes show up in a sequence of 3-4 or just singly. A copy of one is attached here. I don't know if this spot is an aberation in LR or from my cameras. Since it's happened with different cameras, I presume this is some problem with LR. Any comments?

OK. Now I'm doubly embarrassed! You were right again! It was a random adjustment brush stroke that I easily deleted. Now all I have to do is figure out how it got there and avoid doing it again. The same exact spot has been showing up on various images over the last few years in approximately the same place. There are no other adjustment brush strokes on the image. I guess it could have gotten there when I used the brush on other images nearby and forgot to close it before going to the Basic Development section on the new image. I'll probably never figure it out but thanks to your help I can certainly fix it now in LR. FYI, a moment ago I intentionally put a white spot in the blue with the Adjustment Brush and then tried to remove it with the Spot/Heal Tool. I discovered that without a lot of playing around I couldn't even circle the spot with the tool. I only got the hand symbol. There must be some relationship between the two that I haven't seen documented.

  • Dragging the Clone/Heal brush, like in PSCS.

OK, am I missing it here.
    I love the Adjustment Brush.
I really like the permanently adjustable Clone/Heal spot feature.
But, am I missing it here. Is there still no ability to drag the Clone/Heal tool across the image? A keystroke-add to activate this maybe? You know, dragging the brush, just like PS has done for generations.
I have to have just missed this in the manual. If so, I apologize in advance.
But please tell me where. :b

The reason seems to be that Adobe wants to sell Photoshop in addition to Lightroom.
The lack of a proper cloning tool is probably the single most reason why people need to do a trip to Photoshop.
I cannot think of another explanation since a better cloning tool has been requested so many times. Lens correction is a lot harder to do and is now part of LR 3.
Another indicator for a non-technical reason is that the "better cloning tool" requests are all not answered by Adobe officials.
    Too bad.
EDIT: Thanks to Victoria who provided a good answers in another thread I created. The most likely technical reason probably is "performance".

  • Freehand clone/healing brush.

Pretty much the only thing I missed in LR2 is a clone/healing freehand brush instead of only the circular spot one. In addition to the spot removal, I believe this would really be of great use!

Could be I'm missing a step. I'll write down my process in simple words. ( I like to keep it simple... ;-)
Bridge and PS6 are open of course. Mini bridge also.
I have my rendered jpg files open on Bridge and Mini Bridge.
    - I click on the win menu and click on " allow tool recording "
    - In the Acion panel I created a new set with file name Dust Healing and the action is called DH_1 ( dust healing 1 )
    - Record button is on
    - Choose healing brush and use the "mouse" to click ALL dust that has to be removed ( about 10 or so )
    - Stop the recording
    - In MB I right click my 1st pic to reveal it in Bridge
    - in Bridge select ALL 300 images that need to be dust cleaned...
    - In tools I choose --> photoshop - batch
    - in the batch panel I choose the settings i want. Nothing special  ( the play = set Dust Healing - Action = DH_1  / Source - Bridge and nothing further more / Destiantion folder - choose --> folder called Dust heal brush - no override action )
    - I click ok and it does folow all the actions I performed like normal to the pre destined folder
    - when I go and check the pics they are NOT cleaned...
It's not really rocket science I know, but I did this so many times over that I really wouldn't know what I did wrong...
Hope this helps to shine a bit more light on my workflow..
Thanks for any help, if possible. :-)

  • Clone/Heal Missing Sample Circle?

I was just using LR 4.3 (trial) to edit some photos in a collection I exported previously, but now when I use the Clone or Heal brush - the selection and sample circles are missing and not shown. As soon as I click on the spot to clone/heal out, it is immediately changed and I cannot tell where the sample is taken from. If I move my cursor to the area again, it changes to the double-pointing arrow to resize the edit circle and I can adjust it but the edges of the circle are not shown - only the area of pixels change. There is no difference if I left click or tap the touchpad on my laptop to apply the clone/heal.
I had installed the Nik Software package 1.0.0.7 in the mean time, and considering that may be the cause - uninstalled it and rebooted. The issue remained. I uninstalled LR 4.3 and rebooted, installed LR 4.4 and tested again - still the issue remains. I am not sure what else to test. Running on fresh Win 7 install (64bit) on ASUS UX32VD laptop.

For me, the most-used part of the Lightroom help is the section on Keyboard Shortcuts, right at the end of the help file.
I'm always asking myself "what key did I hit to make that happen?"

  • Clone / Heal brush locking up in LR3 on a I7 Windows laptop

    Hello,
This is my first post to the forums so this may have been ask and answered already. (Did not see my specific issue during a quick search) Recently purchased a Windows I7 laptop to upgrade, replace my desktop running Vista. Using LR3 and have started having the clone / heal brush lock up on me. Lightroom stops responding and I have to restart the computer and LR. It does remember where it left off, but it is a major pain. Anyone else experience this?
    Thanks,
    Chris

This is the Photoshop forum...the Lightroom forum is down the hall...

  • Scroll wheel/ball sizes dust spotter clone/heal tool

Hadn't seen this mentioned anywhere, nor in documentation...
Today I accidentally discovered that the scroll wheel/ball on the new Apple mouse will increase/decrease the size of the heal/clone brush tool. Now you don't have to constantly tap the [ ] keys or take the mouse off of the image to use the slider. Just roll the wheel up or down. Cool!

Perhaps I've missed old threads in which LR users have raved about the new LR clone tool, but...in case there hasn't been proper appreciation expressed, here goes:
I think LR's implementation of the clone tool is absolutely brilliant! The variability of brush diameter via scroll-wheel is just the tip of the iceburg.
Yes, Photoshop's clone tool has the ability to be used in discrete layers, but I think LR's clone tool neatly gives the user an almost equivalent ability and then much, much more as well. IMHO, LR's ability to modify (retrospectively!!!) the position and size of cloned areas (both for source and destination spots) is extremely powerful.
Now...all that's needed is for the next version of LR to have the ability to change clone tool shape and "hardness".

  • Clone/Heal not working in LR 4.2 RC

I downloaded the Release Candidate, Lightroom 4.2 and found that the Spot remover is not working either in the Heal or Clone mode.

It works for me and others.  What tool-settings are you using for opacity and size and have you pressed H to make sure you can see the circle?

  • Help! Photoshop CS6 hangs when using brush, clone, healing brush tools etc on Mac

I am having a big problem when using the new CS6 on my Mac (os x 10.7.4). When switching to a new tool, like a brush, or clone stamp, or healing brush etc, Photoshop hangs for about 20 seconds before resuming. It's not 3rd party plug-ins, because I get the same behaviour when I run using the shift key and third party plug-ins are disabled. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens frequently. I've heard that others have had similar problems... are there any solutions - is it a known bug?

  • Cannot use clone/healing in certain layers.

I'm using Ps CS5 to process my photos. My workflow generally starts with background layer, add adjustment layers and smart layers for plug ins for the general stuff. Once the Image is Generally good, I like to "repair" with either the clone stamp or healing brush. This was not a problem before I wanted the flexibility I have by saving layers. Now when I try to use these tools I get messages such as " ...cannot be used in an adjustment layer, or layer contains no image or pixels, or ...cannot be used in a smart layer(I think?)... There is something very basic about using layers, such as which ones have content,(I guess?), that I don't understand. Explanations for using layers are about as clear as mud for me! It would be nice if instead of Ps reminding me that I'm a dummy when I try to use these tools, that it would offer a solution. For example: "if you would like to use the Healing Brush tool, you must first ______ _______ _______ the current layer." Or something like that. I've tried to make only the layer that I'm working in visible. This works great, until I bring back the other layers and my repairs disapear into Adobe's dark dungeon.I suppose It may be that it would help to flatten layers or something like that, but I do want to have the ability to go back and make minor adjustments in the future.

Ah, understanding Layers. Due to the power, and resultant complexity, the full concept of Layers can be tough to grasp. For many of us "old-timers," it was actually easier, as we had worked with acetates in analog art. All we had to do was interpolate that knowledge to the digital world, and then quit screaming "golly, gee-whiz!" with every revelation in the digital world. Every second spent learning the ins and outs of Layers will pay big dividends.
Just looked over Acres' link, and that does look like a good place to start. Knowledge of Layers is a multi-step building process, and having a great foundation is step-one.
Heck, I have been using Layers, and at a fairly high level for well over a decade, and learn something new, almost every week. I have to stiffle those "golly, gee-whizzes... "
Most of all, glad to have helped, and I wish you luck with Layers. If you do find some more useful resources, do not hesitate to update this thread with them. Others will likely benefit from those.
    Happy editing,
    Hunt

  • CS3 Extended and Non functioning Clone/Healing tools

I have installed Photoshop CS3 Extended on my PC (Pentium 4, 3 Ghz, 1GB RAM). The program loads fine and I can use the adjustments (levels, hue, filters, etc). When I attempt to use the Clone stamp tool, It does not work. If I push the "Alt" key and click the mouse, I get the cross-hairs like you are supposed to, but when I release the "Alt" key, it does not clone anything. The circle and the + signs follow the mouse, but no cloning is done. Also, with the Healing brush, it goes thru the motions (round paint brush), but does not leave the dark trace when the mouse is clicked and held. So when released, no healing is done. I have Photoshop Elements 6.0 on the same computer and it works properly. I have tried un-installing/re-installing; deactivate and repair, all with no luck.

    just some general observations...
check that you are cloning both from and to the layers/areas you're expecting if you're working with a multi-layer document. check the options bar to see if 'use all layers' is selected, if that's what you want. also make sure that if you have a selection, you're not trying to clone outside of that selection.
usually when this happens to me, i've forgotten about a selection somewhere. try hitting ctrl-d (deselect) in case you have one hidden...

  • Cut/paste/Clone/Healing

Every time (PS CS5 - PC Windows 7- 6 gig Ram, ATI Radeon HD3400 series) I copy a piece of the image (any image) paste it and then try to clean it up using either Clone or Spot Healing Brush (SHB), they do not work. I can do the alt-click (with clone) and it will show the portion of the image to be cloned within the cursor but as soon as I click to place, nothing happens, same with SHB, minus the alt-click.
The only way to get it to work is shut the program down, restart and all is good, until I do another copy/paste.
I have turned off the Open GL, no difference.
Version of PS is 12.0.1 x64
    Any suggestions?
Oh and yes I'm making sure that I'm on the correct/same layer, it also happens if I flatten everything.
    Thanks in advance.

This is definitely a "problem" with the Shape Dynamics switch (?) as soon as I un-check the Shape Dynamics in the Brush panel I have no problems using any of the tools that are brush based after doing a cut/copy and paste. The eraser refused to work until I did the above.
Time to brush up on my knowledge of Shape Dynamics.

  • What is the differences between Clone & Healing Brushes?

    Dear Forum,
I am using PSE 5.0. Could someone explain the difference between the Clone tool and the Healing Brush tool? They both seem to require a source pixel area and a destination pixel area. I understand why the Spot Healing Brush is different, but I am at a loss to see why what the difference is with the Clone tool. Thanks in advance.

The clone stamp puts down an exact copy of the sampled material. The healing brush blends it in with the underlying area.

  • Setting clone/healing sample points with a script.

Is it possible to set a clone and/or healing sample point with a script? I prefer to clone and heal onto a blank layer so having a way to set the sample point on another layer using a script would save a lot of time. Otherwise I have to go back and forth between the layers.
I can't always use the "Current and below" setting due to the different blend modes on some layers. It would also be difficult to hide all other layers while doing this since I can't really see the overall effect it has on the image.
What I'd ideally want to do is keep the blank clone layer active and when I set the sample point, set it from the layer below the currently active layer.
More info: The blank cloning layers are set as a Clipping Mask for the original. I'm using CS4.
    Thank you.

Sorry, there are very few tools that use the mouse that can be scripted. I have never found a way to script the stamp/healing tools.
