Clone install for reimaging?
Hi,
I need to reinstall Windows and I wonder if there is a quick way to save EVERYTHING I have changed in Photoshop CS6, so my new install is exactly like my old one. This actually includes a software update, but I can apply that manually if needs be.
Maybe you can save the workspace, but that's just a layout. I'm interested in saving all the brushes and blend modes and whatever else that I have painstakingly created, or even downloaded. It would be too easy!
Do I have any luck with it?
Thanks!
Kent

I'm going to install SSD in my Macbook pro, how do I install for example OSX Lion? I dont have any CD with OSX Lion as far as I know.
Ideally, you should clone your HD as Bimmer 7 Series explains.
However, if your computer originally shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, a clone is not necessary to merely reinstall OS X. OS X Internet Recovery will create a recovery partition, download the installer package, and install it on a completely empty SSD or HD.
Even if your computer shipped with Snow Leopard, it may be eligible to download a firmware update that creates the same ability: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904 -
Clean install for the 1st time from Macbook late 2008
Hi all!
I'm doing a clean install for the first time before installing Maverick. I have a Macbook from late 2008, which came with Leopard, but I always did an upgrade whenever installing Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion.
My question is when I do the clean install, the laptop goes back to factory settings, right? Do I need to install all the operating systems or can I go straight to Maverick?
I'mthinking of creating a bootable usb drive with Maverick or should I just install it from the Apple store?
It's my first time erasing the hard drive, I don't want to damage anything, just trying to be extra careful.
Thank you in advance for the helpThe hard drive is wiped clean, but the hardware is the same. There is no "factory settings" until you actually install an operating system. In your case it will be Mavericks. Your laptop did not come this way from the factory.
To return to true factory conditions you have to install the OS that came with your computer. I know this seems like nitpicking, but it's better to have the facts straight.
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
1. After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
3. Use Lion DiskMaker 3.0 or DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Make your own Mavericks flash drive installer using the Mavericks tool:
You can also create a Mavericks flash drive installer via the Terminal. Mavericks has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:
You will need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. Leave the name of the flash drive at the system default, "Untitled." Do not change this name. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy this command line after the prompt in the Terminal's window:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time. -
Re-installing for a User whose Registration Information is Unknown
I've just sold my ibook G4 on ebay. I want to erase and install for the new user, whose personal information and desired "short name" is unknown to me.
How do I erase and install and bypass the set-up assistant (which includes a mandatory registration information) that appears before the installation process?
Thanks for any light shed on this question!Joelius:
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Here are a couple of procedures posted by Kappy that should accomplish what you want done:
This is the simple method and doesn't involve erasing the hard drive.
Boot from your OS X Installer. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Next, boot to single user mode. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-S keys until the computer starts up to a black screen with white type.
3. At the prompt, type the following commands, each command followed by the Return key:
/sbin/fsck -yf
mount -uw /
rm /private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when you reboot, it will send you through the Startup Wizard.
This is the long method:
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
First, back up the data:
1) Shut down all Virtual PCs. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
2) Clone to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.
Next, prepare the machine for the new buyer:
3) Deauthorize the computer in iTunes! Deauthorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
4) Remove Open Firmware passwords
5) Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
Install a fresh OS:
6) Insert the OS X install CD/DVD.
7) Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
8) Run Disk Utility from the file menu and erase the internal hard drive (optionally zero all data).
9) Install OS X.
10) Reboot the computer.
11) From the welcome screen, you can skip the registration step by typing command-Q.
12) When prompted, create an account (it will be an admin account).
13) From your new admin account, configure networking.
14) Then use Software Update to bring your system and all of it's applications up to date.
15) From Disk Utility, repair permissions on the new volume.
Now delete the account you just created:
16) Boot from a different volume (e.g. a firewire drive, if available)
17) Clean up the image using the following terminal commands:
prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/BootCache.playlist
prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/volinfo.database
prompt> rm -r /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/vm/swap*
18) Now you can get rid of the admin account you used to set up the machine Use the terminal:
prompt> nicl -raw /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb -delete /users/<admin>
prompt> rm -r /Volumes/<imagevol>/Users/<admin>
prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/.AppleSetupDone
19) Shut down and ship it to your buyer. When they get it, it will boot to the Welcome screen just like a factory Mac, except that it's better because it's completely up to date.
With acknowledgements to Kappy
Good luck.

Custom Install for Production Computer
Hello, I have a few rather simple questions that I am hoping someone can help me with...
1. I am adding a new MacPro to the mix for production work (photoshop, Indesign, Lightroom etc..) and I would like to drastically dumb down the machine to just run a few graphic/image programs. I don't want it to have anything else installed (garageband, mail, ICal etc....)
I will have it connected to the internet so I am able to update the software but I don't want it to have any browsers installed for internet access.
It has been a few years since I installed my OS and I can't remember exactly what the options are....So what I am wondering is what is the best way to do this? Can I choose not to install them when the system arrives "preinstalled" or should I just uninstall everything that I do not want?
I know this seems like a simple question but I do not consider myself a computer wizard.
2. On my current machine I have a lot of customization such as keyboard shortcuts, photoshop actions, program settings etc.... is there a way to transfer that information easily over to the new machine, since it will be configured very similar
3. I plan on getting the machine with the 640Gb drive but I have considered putting my 250gb SATA2 drive in slot one to keep the OS and software separate and then moving the new 640Gb to slot 2 just for file storage. My reasoning for this is I am currently not using that 250Gb drive and it would give me a little more space...and probably keep my system a little cleaner. is there any advantage/disadvantage to this?
4. I don't know a whole lot about disk images but could I essentially create an image of the 250Gb main OS drive and then if I ran into any sort of hard drive failure I could replace the drive, restore it and that way I wouldn't loose all of my custom settings? The 640Gb would be copied daily to an external drive (I have a RAID setup in my current machine with 2 1Tb drives but I do not want to RAID this machine).
Basically I want to try and have this system set up in the most optimal way to protect my data, keep everything clean and run my programs smoothly.... so any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated...
Hope that makes sense... Thanks! Thanks so much for the responses they are very helpful.
Samsara
I do already have Chronosynch and it appears that is very similar to Super Duper?
From what I gather is Time machine requires a drive approx 3x larger?
Thanks I will look into Diskwarrior... I have never heard of it.
The Hatter
1. I do have other computers with internet access, this one I am just trying to isolate because in all honesty the internet can be a huge time waster for the bored or undisciplined...
Am I missing something I may require a browser for other than surfing the internet? I can do all software updates within the program.. But I would sure hate to remove it and then need it... although I can always reinstall.
2. thanks
3. Thanks.. makes sense
"I'd pull the 250GB as backup external off line, and fill the machine with 3 new drives for media, libraries, projects, scratch, editing."
Could you please explain more about the above?
No, I am not using Lacie drives. My RAID drives are Seagate Barracudas and it is configured in Disk Utility... and I am obsessed with backups.. I run a Chronosynch backup every few days of my whole 1tb drive... it is kept off site and I also have dvds of source files kept off site as well... I have even been known to carry a set of dvd's in my car or memory cards in my pocket so I have a duplicate off site copy just to run to the store in case the house burns down... lol. But I appreciate the concern. -
Is there a 64 bit install for Adobe Reader?
Hello,
I want to make a note that I did a search on the form, using the following text
"Is there a 64 bit install for adobe reader?"
And I did not find my answer. That is why I'm posting this as a question.
So, with that out of the way....
I am getting ready to build a new computer for myself, and will be running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. Before I begin, I want to make sure I have all of my software that I want installed, and I am doing research on each program to see if there is a 64 bit version that can be installed. What I would like to do is have as many as my programs that I install be 64 bit as possible. I know that not every program will be 64 bit, but I did want to get as many of them as possible to be 64 bit applications.
As I do want a PDF reader on my computer, and I have used Adobe Reader for years, I started looking on the web site to download the current version. However, I did not see any place that I could download a 64 bit version of Adobe Reader.
That is why I'm here asking. Is there a 64 bit version of Adobe Reader that I can download? If so, where is it on the web site?
This does lead me to a follow up question. Is there a 64 bit version of the Flash Player, as well as the Shockwave player? If so, where can I download them from as well.
Thanks in advance,
--Brian Plencner
[signature deleted by host]Again, I think you need to check the Microsoft web page, as I was able to find 64 bit versions of IE8 for download.
The URL to access the page is
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-8
From that page, I am able to select a 64 bit version of IE 8 for the following Operating Systems
-- Windows XP 64 Bit
-- Windows Vista 64 Bit
-- Windows Server 2003 64 Bit
-- Windows Server 2008 64 Bit
Windows 7 is not listed as an option as it already comes with IE8 installed by default.
Looks to me that Microsoft has already released a 64 bit version of IE8.
In fact, I went ahead and downloaded IE8 for Windows 2003 Server x64 bit, and looked at the details of the file. Each microsoft download has a digital signature associated with them, showing a date and time of when the exe was built.
According to what is shown below, IE8 for Windows Server 2003 has been around since Sunday, March 08, 2009.
So, what has adobe been doing since March of 2009? IE8 has been 64 bit for well over 2 years now (it will be 3 in March of 2012). While I know that it does take time to develop new applications, I don't think it would take 3 years for Adobe to come up with a 64 bit version of Reader that could have been built under the 64 bit platform.

Help: what meaning of some fields in INSTALL [for install] fields ?
Hi all,
I don't understand some fields in Data field of INSTALL [for install] command.
There is section *"A.1.1.4.2.1 - Toolkit Applet Specific Parameters "* of specification +3GPP TS 23.048 V5.9.0+
*Presence Length Name*
Mandatory 1 Length of Access Domain field
Mandatory 1-p Access Domain (see A.1.1.4.2.3)
Mandatory 1 Priority level of the Toolkit applet instance (see A.1.1.4.2.4)
Mandatory 1 Maximum number of timers allowed for this applet instance
Mandatory 1 Maximum text length for a menu entry
Mandatory 1 Maximum number of menu entries allowed for this applet instance
Conditional / Position of the first menu entry ('00' means last position)
Conditional | Identifier of the first menu entry ('00' means don't care)
Conditional
| ….
Conditional | Position of the last menu entry ('00' means last position)
Conditional \ Identifier of the last menu entry ('00' means don't care)
Optional 1 Maximum number of channels for this applet instance
Optional 1 Length of Minimum Security Level field
Conditional 0-q Minimum Security Level (MSL) (see A.1.1.4.2.5)and more description like this:
The position of the new menu entries is an absolute position among the existing ones.
A part of the item identifier shall be under the control of the card system and the other
part under the control of the card issuer. Item identifiers are split in two ranges:
- [1,127] under control of the card issuer;
- [128,255] under the control of the toolkit framework.
If the requested item identifier is already allocated, or in the range [128,255], then the
card shall reject the install command. If the requested item identifier is '00', the card shall
take the first free value in the range [128,255].These pair fields *"Position of the first menu entry ('00' means last position)"* and
*"Identifier of the first menu entry ('00' means don't care)"*.
What purpose do these fields describe? Let give some example for me!
Thanks,

Have you tried the Seagate SSHD connected externally to the MBP via USB? The drive itself may be faulty.

HT1338 how do you perform a clean install for imac
How to perform a clean install for imac, because I cannot upgrade to version 10.6?
Here are the technical requirements for Snow Leopard:
http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575
If your iMac meets the requirements, then you will have to purchase the Snow Leopard disk from apple:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
To reinstall your OS, insert the original OS disk that came with your iMac and start up the iMac holding the C key. Start the installation process and when you see the menu bar, select 'Utilities'. From the drop down menu, select Disk Utility. Erase the HDD and the continue the installation.
Note that this will erase all data on the HDD so have it backed up before you start.

I uninstalled adobe flash player from my Mac Leopard OS X 10.5.8 and need to get a new version but it asks for the 10.6 before installing and apple won't accept it or the installation is not complete. Now I have no adobe and can't access any apps period without that and the plug-in. The directions are too confusing.
Okay, a few comments... first, that tech at Future Shop has his numbers wrong. As of January of this year, according to my testing, Norton is actually only 73% protection against currently-active Mac malware. That's pretty darn bad, especially when you factor in the fact that Norton is well-known for causing problems. You may think Norton hasn't caused you any problems, but if you've had it installed for 15 years, you'd probably be shocked at how your machine would perform without it. It's probably a large part of the reason that you keep seeing that rainbow wheel cursor.
If Norton's log shows no malware, that doesn't mean Norton caught it, it means Norton never saw any malware to begin with. Which, since it's not so good at spotting it, doesn't really mean much.
Mac malware is rare enough that you've probably never seen any. However, note that running an outdated version of Flash is one of the dangerous things that could change that. Insecure versions of Flash were known earlier this year to be exploited by Mac malware. All you'd have to do is visit the wrong website and you'd be infected.
For this reason, regardless of what you do about anti-virus software, I strongly advise that you not install one of those outdated versions of Flash. If your computer is able to run Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), you should upgrade to that system, then update it fully (Apple menu -> Software Update). Not only is there no known malware currently capable of infecting a fully up-to-date Snow Leopard system, but you'll also be able to run a more secure version of Flash.
You can purchase Snow Leopard here:

Clarification on Bootcamp 3.1 install for Windows 7 Support
Hello all,
I'm looking for some expert opinon on how the BootCamp 3.1 update is supposed to be performed.
As some 3rd party websites state that these updates need to be applied prior to the Windows 7 install. While Apple's online documentation talks about installing 7 and then doing the update.
The reason why I think that apple's process is more accurate is because the 64-Bit driver download is an ".exe" extension. However before I do anything with my MacBook Pro I wanted to find out what others are doing for this OS install process.
If you could clarify the process it would be appreicated as the Software Update feature in Mac OS X doesn't seem to find any updates related to BootCamp.
Thanks in advanceSo what you are saying is that even though the bootcamp utility exists and has already allocated my spot for Windows 7 on Snow Leopard Boot camp doesn't exist thus I can't get the 3.1 update yet?
I'm very familiar with computing terms, and setting up devices... However no documentation really clarifies the whole 3.1 process. All that I can see from apple's perspective is to allocate the bootcamp space. Run the windows 7 install, and then use the snow leopard update and the assoicated drivers (32/64 bit).
However even with the Mac OS X online, I can't figure out how you get that update as each site talks differently.
If someone can clarify exactly from an out of box Mac, to snow leopard boot camp allocation and windows 7 install for these 3.1 updates it would greatly help with my confusion points here.

my imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it, it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is if i choose to finish installing maverick does that mean i will nevver be able to access word documents stored on my desktop? or do the word docs automatically convert to pages or what? i am so confused. would i be better off just sticking with mountain lion and send the maverick install to the trash? hoping someone will be able to answer my question though i am afraid the response is likely to be just stick with mountain lion so you can keep using word. i had been looking forward to maverick but it seems pretty drastic to not have access to microsoft word anymore by switching to maverick. hope someone has an answer so i can have the best of both worlds so to speak!
thanks for your response Csound1 on the peninsula ... if i go ahead and install maverick and then download LibreOffice or OpenOffice will i then be able to access old microsoft word saved documents on my deskstop through those two free alternatives? i am not that knowledgeable about these things so i am not sure if you are saying i will just be able to use libreoffice or openoffice for creating new documents or whether i can access the saved microsoft docs? are they transferred to OO or LO or what and if editing of the old word docs is needed can i do that through the OO and LO programs or apps (see i am not even sure if i am using the correct vocabulary!) hope you can answer this as quick as the first question, so i can decide to stick with mountain lion and trash the maverick install or proceed with maverick install and hoppe that my microsoft word docs are still accessible through OO or LO or adding to myquestion will pages on maverick be able to open the old word documents? thanks again!
