Clone my windows 8.1 setup in Hyper-V

I have a I7 machine running Windows 81. with MediaCenter.  I want to clone my OS setup in a Hyper-V window so that I can play with some configurations without damaging my actual OS.  If the Hyper-v OS becomes corrupted I'll just go back to the
default original Hyper-V clone.
How do I clone my 81. OS as of it's current state of right now?

If you want to do some testing with hardware you can use "Boot on VHD" which will let you boot from the VHD file you create off your physical machine, and let it boot totally separate from your primary installation. Just mount hte VHD using disk management
console and then add boot menu items for the VHD as stated in

  • Mouse not working in Virtual machine (win2k3 32 and 64 bit) on Windows Server 2008 RC1 With Hyper-V Technologies

I have installed two virtual machines(win2k3 32bit and win2k3 64bit ) on Windows Server 2008 RC1 With Hyper-V Technologies (Beta) enterprise. Mouse is getting lost inside VM (using CTRL+ ATL +  LEFT ARROW  comes mouse control control in host OS).
Is there any setting to make mouse works? Insert Integration Serice setup Disk operation succeeds.

     all credits for mike_something
The problem is that the old mousedriver is hooked to the mouse device class.
To remove this dependency, go into the registry and navigate to the key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Remove the value msvmmouf from the UpperFilters Regvalue.
    Reboot....
    tadaaa!!
If you wish you can take out the drivers completely by deleting these registry hives completely :
    The driver:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\msvmmouf
    The Service:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VPCMap
The CopyHook Shell Extension: ( for folder access )
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{30C14BA C-122C-42ED-B319-1139DBF48EB8}\InProcServer32
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\CopyHookHandle rs\VPCCopyHook
After a reboot you can delete the "Virtual Machine Additions" folder from program files...

  • Network setup on Hyper-V 2012 R2

    Hello!
I have A Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role installed. One NICs for all (I know that it is not very good but can't change)
In this setup I also have a 5 guests with Windows 8.1. Each of the guests have the following requirements:
    1. Must have access to the Internet
    2. Must be accessible via RDP from any place in Internet
    3. Have access to file shares of each other
What is the best way to setup virtual network?

    Hi Stanislaw,
" 2. Must be accessible via RDP from any place in Internet "
In addition ,If you intend these VMs to access internet via NAT , I mean you just have one public IP for them , after you connect these VMs to the external virtual switch , you just need to enable their 3389 port and forward
these port to public IP's different ports .
    Hope it helps

  • Unable to Install Windows Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V

My attempts to install are failing with a message "Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing....Error code: 0x800705070".
I am posting this on the Wondows 2012 Server forum but I have had exactly the same problem as described below with Windows 2008 R2 SP1.
As the title says this is on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 host with all current updates. I have downloaded the ISO file from a Technet subscription file twice, once by direct download and once by the Akamai downloader. The virtual disk is connected with
the default IDE driver. I mounted both installation images as ISOs, located on a file system on the host server.  I have tried installs by deleting the VM and recreating both the VM and a new virtual disk, re-using a previously created virtual disk, and
deleting the partitions in a previously created virtual disk, and executing the format command, and then attempting the install.
I have exactly the same problem trying to create a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 VM on the same host OS.  With those attempts, I downloaded the Technet subscription iso 4 or 5 times, and burned one to a DVD which I attached to the created VM.  Same
    error message.
The virtual machines and virtual disks I created and used were all located on an RAID5 array, on a builtin Intel RAID controller using Intel Rapid Storage Technology software version 11.2.0.1066.  The host Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 uses this file system
but the OS is installed on a dedicated drive (C).
I had previously created a guest VM with Windows Server 2008 R2 (several months worth of updates ago) without drama.
I have spent hours reading forums and blog articles on this.  A common response is to download the iso another time, and/or burn it to a DVD instead of mounting an iso image. Although I didn't do the later yet with 2012 Server, but I have done these
other steps attempting to install Windows 2008 Server SP1. The install process takes a while (not to mention doing multiple downloads). Given this seems to be a common recommended remedy, and indeed based on posts does seem to eliminate the problem is some
cases, why doesn't somebody change the Microsoft installer program so it does a thorough integrity check at the beginning of the install process?

    Jeff,
After the exercise of Windows 2012 Server successfully installing (as I described above) I also successfully installed Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V.  From my standpoint, I have eliminated the problem (which isn't the same as correcting the problem).
The answer to your specific question regarding Hyper-V support is that the motherboard I am using, an Asus P5Q, is not supported by Windows 2008 R2 because it doesn't use ECC memory, and the vendor doesn't say it supports Windows 2008. But I am sure you
know the motherboard vendors often don't test older motherboards with newer software versions.  It appears that in specifying ECC memory Microsoft is trying to protect users of Windows Server from hurting themselves, not saying the software won't run.
Having said that, my suspicion in the beginning was, and still is, that it was some variable(s) left in an unknown state in the Hyper-V environment, which was why after trying to install Windows 2008 R2 several times I tried Windows 2012 which resulted in
the same error, and then encountered the same error trying to install Windows 7 on the same Hyper-V installation. The specific Hyper-V Windows 2008 R2 server had run without any operating problems for months before I started having trouble, and although it
had been quite a while since I had created VMs, that process used to work.  The hardware didn't change. What changed was applying updates through Microsoft Update, and a few access control rights I changed, and at least I think, I set back to their original
    value.
So in short, no, my hardware isn't supported by Windows 2008 Server.  Two, your assertion that you are running the same software configuration that I am is very unlikely to be true. There are an extremely large number of things which are different between
your test system and mine, such as which Windows 2008 components are installed, what updates were installed and in what order they were installed, and what other third party software each of us is running, and between AD, and all the features, a large number
of potential differences in ACLs, options, etc. and I don't for a minute think this particular problem was caused by the underlying hardware.
I do appreciate your taking the time to try to help me, and I hope there is one thing you and I could agree on. Microsoft could pretty easily make it much easier to isolate problems. In this day and age reporting hex error codes (as opposed to doing the
table lookup in the error handling proc), and not providing more diagnostic information seems to me to be almost quaint.  And in this case Microsoft can dismiss my problems on the grounds it was all on unsupported hardware. Unfortunately, I think they
are missing an opportunity to make their software better, because in my opinion what I encountered there are a set of conditions which will cause installations to fail that aren't going to get corrected.

  • Windows 8.1 Prof and Hyper-v Server 2012 R2 core export snapshot hile VM is running

    Hi,
I have ugraed my client to Windws 8.1 prof. After some digging i found out that it was posible to export a snapshot(if you have multiple snapshot) while using Hyper-v manager in windows 8.1 to a Hyper-v 2012R2 server. In my old pc win 7 prof i had the option
to export but it didt work on running VM. On the win 8.1 i dont have that options? am  i missing some updates?
    Any tips? fix?

    Hi Martinbt,
    >>In my old pc win 7 prof i had the option to export but it didt work on running VM. On the win 8.1

As you mentioned "it was possible to export snapshot " , but then you said you don't have that
    option .
Could you please detail what is your goal ?
( "snapshot" equal to "checkpoint" )

  • Backup/clone my windows 7 partition in mac os x. what program?

hey. i recently made a new partition using boot camp assistant.
its formatted as ntfs with windows 7. the problem is, i need more space.
the logical thing to do is to clone the windows-partition from os x, then delete it.
this way i could just make a new one with more space, and restore the image i cloned earlier.
ive seen many giving winclone a chance for this specific job.
i also tried winclone, but i encountered a problem which is (according to many people) due to the fact that
winclone has certain issues/problems with cloning a partition with windows 7.
after around 20 seconds into the cloning process, i get an error message.. probably
because of what i mentioned above.
a quotation "Winclone on Snow Leopard (10.6) has an issue cloning Windows 7 (NTFS) partitions. Disabling compression in Preferences may resolve this."
i would like to check in the preferences of winclone to see if disabling this compression might do the trick,
the only problem is - i cannot locate any preferences.. anywhere. how come?
and, is there a better and just as simple alternative to winclone out there, to pull this job?

  • PC+AX Error - ....Windows is not setup to manage wireless network....

I'm attempting to setup AX with Windows XP. I have a 802.11g Dlink router (DI-524) that I typically connect to using my work laptop. The PC has a direct connection to the router. The AX constantly flashes amber. I tried hard reseting the AX. When I run Airport Admin Utility on my PC the AX does not show up. However, I can see it using my laptop in the wireless connections. When I open Airport Setup Assistant I get the following error "This computer has no wireless interface enabled or Windows is not setup to manage wireless networks on this computer. If you have....."
I'm not sure what do do from here. Appreciate any help.

I have a Qwest wireless modem (model 2701hg-d) and am trying to set up the Airport Express (AX) to use already existing wireless network wirelessly (ie without the ethernet cable). Is this possible?
In order to set it up I have the AX plugged into the modem via an ethernet cable. I have reset the AX and then run the Admin Utility. Once it recognizes the AX I then go to the Airport tab and select 'Join an Existing wireless Network (wireless client)' and then enter in the Network Name exactly as it is spelled in my modem configuration. I check the 'Internet' tab and it says connect using: Wireless Network adn the 'Network' tab is grayed out. Then I hit update and the admin utility no longer lists the AX and the AX light is blinking amber. Not sure what is going on. I am using v6.2 of the firmware.
Do I need to use WDS?
Also, does anyone know if multiple speaker selection is available for itunes pc like it is in itunes mac? Currently I can only play either my computer speakers OR my kitchen speakers.

  • Best way to clone a Windows 7 Bootcamp Partition?

I have a 1 TB hard drive that has 2 partitions, one for my OS X install and one for my Windows 7 Bootcamp which I am running parallels off of, and I want to move to a 2TB hard drive and am wondering what the best solution might be to clone my Windows partition to move it to the new drive. I will be using Carbon Copy Cloner for the mac partition.
I am assuming I need to partition the new drive, then use bootcamp assistant to make the new bootcamp partition, and then use something like Casper from within windows to clone the windows 7 partition? Can I run that while just running in parallels? I am assuming I can.
I see that people used to use a program called WinClone on the mac side, but it seems to have been discontinued, and was never updated to work with Windows 7.
Thanks for any help you can give me, it is appreciated.

I don't know of any free imaging programs for Windows.  I use Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery (a.k.a.: Ghost.)  I've also used Acronis Trueimage in the past.  Both work well and are quite popular, but are not free.
For situations like you describe, I prefer to reinstall Windows rather than image.  And then install the current versions of whatever programs rather than move over all the leftover garbage in the Registry and old DLLs, etc.
In fact, if you're using Parallels, then if you made a typical virtual machine rather than have Parallels use your Boot Camp Partition, then you wouldn't have an issue "moving" Windows.  A "typical" virtual machine is just a bunch of files so "moving" Windows means just copying the files within OSX.  If you need the full performance of Boot Camp (i.e.: Photoshop, Autocad), then fine, but otherwise I say take this opportunity to reinstall Windows clean as virtual machine.  Then when you want to move to a 3TB drive in the future, you're good to go.
Additionally, reinstalling Windows would avoid you having to buy an imaging program for Windows.  So no $$$, just a few hours of labor.  And if you reinstall Windows as a virtual machine, then the future "move" would still be no $$$ and even less labor.

  • How do I do a Windows 7 restore as a Hyper-V clent with Server 2012 Essentials R2?

How do I do a Windows 7 restore as a Hyper-V client with Server 2012 Essentials R2?  There is no client restore CD available as an ISO to mount as the CD.
    Scott

    Hi,
As we know, to simplify the bare metal restore scenario, we implemented the Client Restore Service in Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, which will enable WDS on the Windows Server Essentials
server and configure the client restore image as a boot image. With the Client Restore Service turned on, the administrator can initiate a PXE boot on a client computer by using a network interface to launch the Client Restore Wizard and restore the client
computer. There’s no need to prepare a client restore DVD, or a client restore USB bootable key. For details about how to perform the client restore, please refer to the following article.

    Rob, welcome to the forum.
During boot you should continually tap the Esc key to enter the BIOS.  I am not certain that you will find Hyper-V as an option in the BIOS.  Most of HP's BIOS'es are kept very simple with only the necessary settings.

  • Windows 8.1 Metro and Hyper-V

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro on my laptop. For testing purposes I have Hyper-V installed. It seems though when I have Hyper-V installed and associate a Virtual Switch to my wireless card to give internet access to guests in Hyper-V the Metro apps
stop communicating to the internet through the wireless. I can plug into the Ethernet and it works fine, but as this laptop is mostly portable I don't have the opportunity to use Ethernet that often. Also even after removing the virtual switch they still don't
have access. The only way to get the Metro side to start working is to uninstall Hyper-V then it works fine over WiFi.
I've tried new Drivers and Firmware and my laptop is completely up to date with Windows Updates.
I know some of you must have the same setup, has anyone seen this issue and or have a solution?

You were right, I tried my wireless network at home and it worked, it's a D-Link. So I went back to the office and it didn't work, Netgear WPN824v3. For complete confirmation I tried another Netgear, different model, that I keep around for testing and it
worked as well. It seems there is something with the software on the WPN824v3 that makes it not work, unfortunately I'm also on the latest version.
Well it's old so I guess I can't complain to much, in my office we just don't do that much wireless stuff to justify a fancy business class AP. For the time being I simply disabled the DHCP on the office wireless router and let it run
through it's own VLAN through an open port on my Firewall, this allows my laptop Metro apps to communicate to the internet. I've been meaning to do this for awhile to get some insight as to what exactly is happening on my wireless network. I would just be
very curious as to what could've caused this in the software.
Thank you very much for your help!

  • CS4 Master Collection/Windows 7 Broken Setup.exe

Yesterday I made the jump from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Beta--everything carried over nicely except for my CS4 Master Collection. Upon booting Premiere Pro up, I was informed that my "trial" had expired--a fact which I knew was not true as I own retail. I figured that uninstalling and re installing would solve my problem, but when I rebooted the setup, the installer would install about 15% of the complete package before giving me an error and closing.
After this, I read through some forums and learned that I needed to run CS4Cleanup from Adobe to reinstall the programs; I installed both the CS4Cleanup and the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (the Windows Installer Cleanup was needed for the Adobe Cleanup to work) and ran the CS4Cleanup successfully.
However...when I attempted to run the Setup.exe after the cleanup, the initial Setup gets to about 80% and then informs me that the "setup encountered an error and cannot continue" and then closes on me. Since using the WIndows and Adobe Cleanups, I am now worse off then I was before! Does anyone have any suggestions/solutions?

Hopefully you were not even thinking about using a beta release of an operating system for production work! Even Microsoft warns you about that! And even more so, you should not even attempt to do an "in place" operating system "upgrade" (something that has never worked particularly well with any Microsoft operating system).
Assuming you were just "hacking around" trying to see how well Windows 7 may work with existing applications, you should have deactivated the Adobe software running under Vista, backed up data, and totally reformatted the disk (low level format) before attempting any such experiments.
    Please understand that Adobe does
not support operation under pre-production operating systems. CS4 was released well before there were any builds of Windows 7 available to developers.
