Clone Network

Here is the game plan: I am setting up a new lab for an elementary school. I have 30 computers that I need to all look and run exactly the same. I know about Carbon Copy Clone (witch does not work with 10.3) is there any easier way? I have an Apple Server with X Serve. Network Install utility maybe?
OK- First, can I make an image of the master Mac using the disc utility? How? Second, how would I mount that image on the clone eMacs? Every time I try I an error -1 or error -2.
Some of the "need to be clone" eMacs are OS 10.2.x and some are OS 10.3.x will it matter? Basic question is what is the most realistic way of doing this.
Let me explain what I have tried so far. I booted the Master eMac into fire wire mode and made a .dmg of the hard drive on my MacBook. Then went to a clone eMac and booted my MacBook into fire wire mode and downloaded the .dmg onto the clone. Mounted the .dmg using disc utility. Tried to mount the Macintosh HD.dmg over the Macintosh HD already on the Mac. Sounds confusing, I know. Maybe I am doing this all wrong. ugh.

There are numerous ways of approaching this. Some of your issues may stem from the 10.2 nature of your source material - a lot of things have changed since then and, off hand, I can't remember enough of the specifics to know for sure whether what you want to do is supported that far back.
The main issue is the version of OS X running on the MacBook - I'm sure it's not 10.2 or 10.3 since they predate the machine. I know at some point Apple changed the disk image format and it may be that's your problem - 10.2 cannot read a disk image created under 10.4, so you may need to recreate the disk image using 10.2 or 10.3.
That said... your theory sounds correct in that you have a disk image of what you want to put onto the eMacs. However, it sounds like you're trying to restore that disk image onto the active eMac drive and that's not going to work under any version - you cannot replace the active system drive while it's running. What you can do is boot off any other device (including, potentially, the MacBook that's holding the disk image, or a System Install CD/DVD) and then replace the internal drive's contents with the disk image (when you're booted off some other media, the internal drive just looks like any other drive).

    Maybe i didnt get the question, but if i did, dropbox shoud be the solution, having a shared folder on every mac you use, you can edit the files, photos or folders, just save them with the same name everytime, and the file will be updated or overwritten.

  • Severe Network Password issues

    Hi all, this is my first post here.
    Of the four computers accessing our router, 3 of them work fine (2 PCs and 1 x Apple PowerBook on OS 10.3.9 over airport).
    The machine with the internet connection that no longer works well is my G5. I recently updated the airport software through software update--my thoughts are, does this contain firmware that may have interfered?:
    The curious thing is that after performing a clean install with the system discs (10.3.3) and when trying to connect to 'a specific network' as before, the airport sees the network name correctly, but when selected, internet connect now prompts for a WEP password, where it never used to--and it DOESN'T connect--returning an 'Error connecting to MyNetwork' message...
    This is the same WEP key as entered in to System Prefs > Network > 'a specific network' > Password--which used to be perfectly adequate.
    I am actually now booted from my external clone FW 800 drive, which was a backup from September when everything worked fine--and guess what--my clone network settings work absolutely fine and I can connect to the internet and sit here writing this post, no problem...
    So because of this I don't believe that it is a hardware issue.
    However, when performing a clean installation of 10.3.3 and choosing to 'transfer user network data' from a previous mac (in this instance my boot clone), everything clones perfectly EXCEPT the network password settings which refuse to connect to the internet and behave again, in the manner described above.
    I have run all sorts of disc tests, clean installs that transfer no data from anything previous whatsoever, with various updates applied, and yes, even copied my clone drive using superduper back onto the main system disc as an erase and install clone of my boot clone... to no avail.
    A small gllimmer of hope appeared briefly when having cleared the PRAM on startup, after a few more identical attempts at entering the password on a clean install (with NO data transferred from the boot clone on install), the airport DID make a connection. But only briefly, it gave up the connection after a short while and reverted to the error messages as before.
    What is frustrating is that surely if it was a Keychain issue, any keychain info would be zeroed from the clean install. The Airport can see the router, but wont connect without the correct password. I've tried addding $ signs in front of the password too, and like I say, it did connect once for about five minutes and then died again...
    And the really annoying thing is that it works fine when I boot up in the boot clone!!!
    Any ideas, help and suggestions will be really really appreciated.

    The password you are being asked for is the Base Station password. The default is "public." If this was changed, you can perform a "soft" reset on the AX to get it back.

  • Setting up complex wake up & sleep schedules

    Hi,
    I'm wanting to set up a complex wake up & sleep schedule to allow various tasks to run at various times. Eg. Clone a disk at 4am on Mondays & Thursdays, as well as do a network backup at midnight on Sundays. I can set up the clone & network backup programs fine, but I can't find a way to wake the Mac up from sleep with this schedule. The Energy Saver schedules don't allow for more than one wake up time per week.
    Is there any other way to make wake up/sleep schedules?

    Thanks to the advise of knowledgeable folks in here I went ahead and purchased a new GC (NVidia GForce 8800) and 16 GB of RAM from Amazon for my early 2008 Mac Pro. Everything is going great but as I keep on looking ahead, I keep reading it's also wise to clone my original startup HD.     Also there is SuperDuper with an excellent built in pdf help manual and free to try out both.
    Bootable backup. Dumps the volume to another volume and makes an exact copy. Can also be used for archiving.
    Keep a couple. One 'original' and one that is current. Never install updates or changes without making sure you have a clone.
    Your safety net in case of failure or trouble.
    Also used to 'move' or copy the system to a new drive, such as an SSD.
    Once you look at the program and choose the Source and Destination Target I think just try it and should be self explanatory more than words.

  • Clone disks across a network

    Hi,
    Just want to know if there is a way that I could clone 2 disks, one being a mirror onto 2 other disk on a different server, all disks are the same and the OS Solaris 10?
    My thought is that I would need to break the mirror remove one disk and replace and clone it with dd or dump
    ie. dd if=/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s2 of=/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s2 Bs=128k
    The reason being that the system is a production system and can not be down for more then a hour and I need more information to suppy the powers that be that it will take a longer time.
    Given that I need to duplicate the disks onto the other server I won't to be sure that there is
    1. no way to do this across the LAN
    2. no way with out being in single user mode
    3. no way faster then a disk clone one the same system

    I found the answer right after sending my question.  If two user's label names don't match, the color-coding won't work. If they do match, the color-coding works across a network from user to user -- i.e. - I originally renamed my green label as "Copyright Okayed", but I only renamed it on my computer while all other computers still had the green label named as it's default, "Approved".  As soon as I went onto the other computers and changed the green label name to "Copyright Okayed" in the Preferences, the color-coding worked.

    Rather than a 100% identical clone to 40 Macs, I suspect you want the same basic image to be loaded on to those 40 Macs but will require some individualisation so that for example each has a unique computer name.
    NetRestore and System Imaging Utility can do this but a lot of people including myself prefer to use DeployStudio which has more capabilities. See http://www.deploystudio.com
    DeployStudio can be used to like NetRestore to restore an image to multiple Macs at the same time which is like multiple people downloading at the same time, but it can unlike the standard NetRestore also be configured to use multicast traffic which is more like a TV broadcast whereby multiple people receive the same transmission at the same time. This can be more efficient for imaging larger numbers of computers at the same time. For example 1Gbps shared between 40 computers is only 25.6Mbps each, but if you multicast a single transmission of 100Mbps to 40 computers then all 40 can listen to it at the same time and still be receiving 100Mbps even on the same network connection.

  • How can I clone a Dish Network drive?

    I currently have a Western Digital MyBook Premier Edition 320gb drive (USB/Firewire) in use as an external hard drive on my Dish Network VIP 722 receiver.  It has the proprietary format that Dish Network uses.  I have purchased a 500gb USB drive to replace this drive so that I can use the WD drive as a backup drive for our computers (MacBook and iBook).  I can move the movies currently archived on this drive one at a time back to the DVR, and then to the new drive.  Only one of these drives can be hooked up to the DVR at a time, so this will be a rather tedious process.  I would like to clone the current drive to the new drive, and then reformat the WD drive to use with the computers to avoid this tedious process.  I've read that this can be done with Linux (which I know nothing about), but I don't have a clue how.  Can this be done with Mac OS, perhaps Terminal?  I consider myself fairly computer literate, but if this can be done, I will need step-by-step instructions as I know enough about Terminal to know that I shouldn't use it without them.  Thanks for your help

    There is a reason they use proprietary formats.
    I hate to sound like a jerk, but this forum is not allowed to discuss duplicating copy-protected DVDs or other illegal activities.  We need to be clear of such issues.

  • Clone of a VM does not propogate network interfaces

    I am looking for a help. When I am cloning a VM, I am seeing that network interfaces are not getting propogated to the new cloned VM. I am using B200 M2 blades.
    I am cloning a VM with RHEL 6.3.

    Hi,
    There is an issue with RHEL 6.3 OS while cloning. Following two steps have to be done before cloning a RHEL 6 VM.
    1.    Remove “HWADDR” from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.
    2.    Remove /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file.

  • Clone running Server over network

    I have a co-located server which I need to ship from one location to another. I don't want to have a complete outage while the server is in transit. I was thinking that I could setup a clone of the server. I have an extra slightly underpowered older g5 (local) box at the new location. Is there a way to clone (live) the co-located server to my local machine?

    hmm just double checked the local is running a G4 (just remembered that the G5 bit the dust last month). My primary concern is keeping the email server running while I relocate the server (my wife has her business account on the server...). I've tested a boot of Xserver from an external drive with the G4 and it runs well enough to handle the load. Now I just want to transfer all the configurations to the external (mounted locally) I figure once I test I can do a last minute update to get the latest changes before a do a switch over.
    What would be the best way to clone the relevant/necessary data from the remote server to the local disk?

    If the same website is opening each time you launch a browser (Safari?) hold down the shift key as you launch to prevent previous pages from opening.
    Have a look at your settings in Safari > Preferences. Especially General and Privacy.
    Reset Safari to remove cookies and other stored data.
    System Preferences > General
    Have a look at your settings in System Preferences >  Security & Privacy.

  • Multiple Users Mounting the Same Network Share?

    Hello, first time posting...
    I'll cut right to my main question: Is it possible, on OS X v10.3.9, for multiple users to simultaneously connect to the same network share?
    Here in my office, we have a single Mac that is used by multiple people throughout the day. It has two accounts on it, 'Communications' and 'Studio'. 'Communications' is an Admin account that is used by a co-worker who spends the most time on the Mac. He created the no-limitation 'Studio' account for the rest of us to use.
    There is a certain Windows network share that we both frequently use. We've found that if one user connects to the share first, the other user will not have access to it; using 'Go -> Connect to Server' will result in the share being greyed out in the list, and the share will not show up in the Finder.
    However, there is one way around it. If Studio connects to the share first and then Communications (the admin account) attempts to make a connection of it's own *through a shortcut on the dock*, then a 'clone' of the share will be created on Comm's desktop, with a "-1" after the name (though it might be some other number).
    This may sound like I've answered my own question, but what I'm looking for is a way for the non-Admin account to access the share after the Admin account already has (so that we don't have to log-in and disconnect Communications everytime Studio needs to manage files on the share).
    We have Thursby Software's DAVE installed on the Mac, but I'm not sure how it fits into all this.
    Any thoughts, suggestions or advice?

    Bizarre. It turned out I could merge them, but only in to the mapped drive - L: - and only by explicitly clicking on the drive icon - if I typed L:\series in to dialog box it converted it back to \\nas\share\series... Not helpful.

  • Using Time Capsule to backup a small office network

    Hi all,
    I am hoping somebody may be able to tell me if this is a good plan or not. I have been really struggling to find a good network backup solution. I've been trying to make a Lacie Ethernet Disc Mini work but have finally given up on that one.
    I am trying to find a simple solution to backup a network of 5 macs. 1 is currently plugged straight into my router, another router port extends to switch in another building which has 4 further macs along with other network devices connected. Crucially, there is no wireless access from this building to the router.
    Would all macs backup to the Time Capsule, including those that are wired via the switch? If so, at what speed? I have heard suggestions that it can be a very slow process?
    I'm not worried about any kind of streaming - purely a good backup device.

    I have a small business and chose to use Time Capsule as a backup for my company's network. We have 12 workstations and use all Macs, some wireless and some not. I'm an experienced Mac sys admin and have setup many networks, including designing and installing the network we currently have, which is driven by a Leopard Server.
    Based on a year of experience working with Apple's newest airport extreme and capsule products, I would not use them in business and am moving towards a wireless network hd using Carbon Copy Cloner as my software. This is due in part to numerous calls to Apple for support on these items, having to reset them dozens of times, and being told by Apple support that using these products for business is not recommended.
    Carbon Copy Cloner is a great tool for a backup, especially for workstations, as you can create partitions for each computer on your HD and CCC will create *bootable* backups of your HD - a great lifesaver if a computer fails and you don't have time to reinstall everything.
    I will be putting the capsule and extreme devices on Craigslist for sale and hope to recoup enough to get the wireless network drive, which my research shows is the best way to get network backup solutions for small business.

  • Creating a small office network with Leopard

    Here is the set up. I apologize for the length but I want to explain as much as possible.
    I work in a small ad agency that has 6 macs: 1 G4 mini (Tiger), 2 PowerMac G4 Mirrored (Tiger), 1 Cube G4 (Tiger), 1 MacBook (Leopard, 1 iMac CoreDuo (Leopard).
    The user names of our home directories are all over the place, some machines have the same user name (two different machines have the same user name "FRED" for example).
    Some of us connect to our network wirelessly and some through the ethernet plugs in the walls.
    We work off files on an External Hard Drive connected to a MacMini G4 running Leopard.
    We have had so much BAD LUCK with this.
    Some users can't save files that others worked on because of "insufficient privleges".
    SOOOO... we switched the MacMini's OS to Tiger because it worked before we upgraded to Leopard. Now we can't back up the External Hard Drive either by copying the files to a Firewire External Hard Drive or by using something like Carbon Copy cloner.
    I have clicked IGNORE PERMISSIONS of the External Hard Drive and the backup Firewire External Hard Drive and still no dice.
    SO.... We are starting over. We are getting an Intel MacMini as the brain and two USB externals to set up as a RAID for the file storage. We are then using a third external USB to run time machine.
    My questions:
    1) Should we create new user accounts on our existing machines to "start over", using unique names? A server guy from another ad agency suggested this.
    2) Is there a way to reset all file permissions on the existing external file storage hard drive so that EVERYONE can read and write? I would like to do this before trying to copy all these files to our new RAID External Hard Drives.
    Sorry this is so **** long and confusing, but I can't find any straight answers.

    It would definitely be a good idea. It probably won't do much to address your problem. It would just remove another layer of complexity. The UID is the user ID. Root is user ID 0. The first user is usually 501, second 502, etc. If you had each machine setup the same way, then user 505 on machine A would have full access to user 505's files on machine B. The actual names are irrelevant. It is the UID that is important.
    But again, this does not address your issue at all. You actually need user 505 to access user 501's files. That is something else. Ignoring permissions will work for local file systems, but not for networked file systems. Unfortunately, I'm not really that familiar with network security in an application environment like MacOS X. There are certainly ways to do it and MacOS X server is certainly one way. I don't know the others.

    1 Management Server : Dell PowerEdge R730 48 cores, 2.5 Ghz with 9 HDD 300 GB SAS 15K (RAID 5) and 256 Gb RAM
    2 VDI Hosts server : Dell PowerEdge R730 48 cores, 2.5 Ghz with 9 HDD 300 GB SAS 15K (RAID 5) + 1 SSD 200 GB, 256 Gb RAM, 2 grid K1 cards
    1 LUN on an Dell Equallogic PS6110X (750 GB) where I put the masters.
    1 switch Dell N4032F (10 Gb)
    All server will have 4 ports 10Gb configured with NPAR (so, i have 6 x 10 Gb virtual nic for the storage and 6 virtual nic for the VM network) and 2 ports 1 Gb for the management.
    My master :  Windows 7 SP1 x86 optimized with 24 Go HDD Thin-Provisionned (2 vCPU, 2 Go RAM, VMXNET 3 network cards). There is none added application on this master.
    I can't apply the Microsoft patch for VMXNET 3 because it says that this patch is not applicable.
    I don't have VSAN because only 2 VDI hosts, so I configure my pool for each hosts with local storage for the linked clones and local SSD for the replica.
    When I run the provisionning of the desktop pool (17 VM):
    The clone of the replica (Equallogic ==> local SSD) will take 2'30".... That's good for me (113 MB/s... the Equallogic is also used for another server storage on other LUN)
    But the rest of all operation to finish the provisionning will take 40'.
    More than 50% of cores will mount to 100% CPU on the host.
    I have tried to change my RAID5 (9 hard disk + 1 spare) to RAID10 (10 HDD). It take 50'.
    And, when all operations are finished... I have 2 or 3 VM with the message : Agent Unreachable and 1 or 2 hangs on Provisionning.
    A recompose a one VM Desktop will take approximatively 1'30.
    My question : it's normal that the provisioning will take so much time ?
    And other question : when i'm connected to a VM Desktop with Horizon client during a pool provisioning, the VM freeze or i simply can't connect. Even if i have ready desktop. And sometimes, vCenter client will freeze to a lot of seconds during provisioning
    Have someone idea ?
    PS : Sorry for my approximate English ;-)

    Today, i have try to put the RAID in RAID 0.
    Result : always 50 minutes for provisioning.
    So, the problem is not the RAID...
    In vRealize Operation Manager, I see that i have latency in disk command and disk operation (up to 7000 ms !!!!).
    And in vCenter performance (all type of performance), I have a lot of blank graphics during 5 to 20 seconds in different steps.
    I don't know where were looking my problem...
    Any idea ?
