Clone or Healing Brush Tool Creates Ghost Layer or Image - Unusable

I am using the latest version of Photoshop CS5.5 on a fully updated MacBook Pro.
I am having issues with the following tools:
Clone Stamp Tool,
Healing Brush Tool,
More details:
Essentially it "appears" that Photoshop is duplicating the layer and the layers appears to be dragged whenever the cursor is moved. I do not need to be holding down the mouse button for the layer to follow the cursor.
If I click outside of these tools then photoshop functions as normal, and this extra layer-effect disappears. Clicking back to those tools however causes it to reoccur.
From testing, when first selecting these tools (on program startup) nothing occurs. It's only when I select the target area (option+click) to use the tools does this problem begin.
I have checked, and no layer is duplicated. It is also a single image (so not a copy on top of the original).
I have been using Photoshop for a few years now and familiar with it's interface and functioning. Initially it was working fine on this laptop, however in the last few months this problem has begun and persisted. On other computers it is functioning fine. A complete uninstall and reinstall of Adobe on the laptop has made no change either.
Please can someone help? Thanks in advance for any assistance or guidance you can provide.

I am not saying that this will absolutely sort your problem but it is a good place to start.
Try resetting your Photoshop Preferences. Check out this post for instructions.

  • Clone and Healing Brush making blobs

    When using the Clone and Healing Brush tools, everything will work as expected, and then blobs appear on other parts of the picture.  I have noticed that when the Clone puts these blobs on, the + did not appear.  Then I have to use the Undo button and try it again.

    Hi,
    Can you please be more specific about the steps, so that i can understand the issue clearly. Picture would help too.
    Thanks.

  • Copy and Paste clone and healing brush?

    Is it possible to copy clone stamp tool and healing brush effects from one image to another?
    I.e. I edit an image in Lightroom, then work on it in Photoshop CS often using clone and healing brush tool. However, if I then change the original in Lightroom, as I often seem to do, I have to re-do all my work in Photoshop. Is there a way I can copy my Photoshop work from the old to the new image?

    I'm not familiar with CS2 and don't even know whether it has an Options Bar. However, look for Window > Options to see if there is one that just needs enabled.
    Here's what it looks like for Clone Stamp Tool in CS6.

    When trying to use the clone stamp and/or healing brush as soon as I move the cursor from the toolbar over to the image I get an exact copy of the existing layer that moves around the window with the movement of the clone stamp/healing brush.  This just started tonight.  What's causing this weird behaviour?

    What are the settings in Window > Clone Source?

    Sounds like you have the Narrow Options Bar enabled

  • Healing brush tool at lines of high contrast

    I love the healing brush tool but hate how it doesn't work right in the proximity of high contrast areas. It leaves that little light or dark halo. Can anyone tell me why/how/solutions as to why it does this? I know bumping up the hardness works a little but then you might as well use the clone tool. Any thoughts?

    I know bumping up the hardness works a little but then you might as well use the clone tool.
    There's more to the Healing Brush than that. It blends the surrounding pixels and what you just painted together to create a seamless composition (most of the time anyway) while the Clone Stamp Tool will basically only copy/paste pixels. To get rid of the bleeding effect when using the Healing Brush you have to make a selection that would not include the areas of high contrast. You can also try using the Clone Stamp Tool set to either the Darken or Lighten blend modes to make it blend better with the rest of the composition.

  • Clone Stamp & Healing Brush and alignment

    I have PSE9. I am having excellent success in removing collars from the dog pictures I am working on when using the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools in combination. The book I am learning from says if I want to select pixels from a single source to deselect the align option. However whether I have the align option selected or not, I am getting the corresponding crosshair sampling pixels as the tools are brushed on the image. I know I can do even better if I can maintain a single sampling source. How do I select and maintain a single sampling source for these two tools? Thanks, Jim.

    Thank you for your response, but forgive me for asking for clarity. I will be removing alot of dog collars. The collar is red and is surrounded by white and black fur. Just to make sure I understand, as I use the two tools, even with the Aligned option deselected, I will need to keep identifying source pixels multiple times as I brush out the collar. There is absolutely no way ((I tried the single click) to select one source and brush wherever I like on the photo and remove the replace the pixels with the one source. Thank you for your patience, Jim.

  • Will upscaling or using clone stamp/healing brush to upsize give better resolution?

    I'm designing a 5.25" square CD cover using a rectangular image and the resolution needs to be min. 300ppi to print .  The artist sent me the art image (painting) from her camera as a jpeg and it goes to photoshop as a large (approx 20" X 24") file at 72 ppi.  To change the ppi to 300 without resampling (I've been told this is best), the image becomes too narrow (4 1/2") and too high (5.9").
    I don't want to crop because I don't want to lose content.  I want the image to completely cover the CD cover  And I want to keep the same proportions for certain parts of the image.  So I believe my two best options are as follows:
    1.  Bring the image to 300ppi with the measurements above, protect certain parts of the image on an alpha channel, content aware scale the rest of the image wider to make it square and then resize down a bit for the CD cover or
    2.  Bring the image to 300ppi and then use the clone stamp and healing brush tool or content aware fill (doesn't work so well on this image) to duplicate and extend the sides of the image to widen and square it and then resize down a bit for the CD cover.
    Does anyone know which of these options will give the best resolution?  Is upscaling more likely to cause pixelization than the other option?  Is there a better way?  Should I do options 1 and 2 to the large 72 resolution image instead of bringing it to 300ppi first and then upscale or clone stamp--would that give better results?
    Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated!

    You've said that you don't want to crop, and you want to cover the entire CD cover. That leaves you with two choices. Extend the short side(s) via cloning, content aware fill, etc. or stretch the image in one direction, either with the standard free-transform or with content aware transform. See what looks best. Your resolution will be fine. You can res up if you need to. The amount you're short will not matter here. Leave room for bleed - usually 1/8".

  • Using the healing brush tool

    Anybody able to give me a simple explanation of how to use the healing brush tool to retouch  photograph?

    I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium...  And I'm using Photoshop Elements 10 with a Wacom Intous 4 tablet and pen.    I noticed this behavior right after a forced reboot from a Microsoft update yesterday.  I was editing a pic when it rebooted.
    Now, the behavior only manifests itself within Photoshop Elements when I use tools that use reference points such as the clone tool or healing brush.  It's a trailing dot that seems to echo the reference point; which eventually catches up to place itself right under the tip as I make a stroke.   I can't really see what I'm doing, so I end up making a big mess of things on my pics.  This also occurs using my logitech mouse...   Check the mouse settings as well, and it not using any trail options.
    Called Wacom and they had me uncheck "use microsoft ink" from within the Wacom properties.  They identified the problem as the "ripple effect."     I've disabled the "press and hold" feature the "pen and touch" options in windows,  disable the Tablet PC Input service, and made edits to "TurnOffPenFeedback"  in, both, the local machine and local user in order to disable it.  So far, nothing has worked.   If it makes a difference, I noticed that every time I edit the local user registry entry, it enables itself after each reboot.   Haven't fingered the cause of this yet.     Please let me know if you have any other ideas.  Thanks!

  • Spot healing brush tool luminosity not working as expected?

    I have a question about the content aware spot healing brush tool:
    The normal and replace mode work just fine as expected... the color mode does indeed a fine job fixing the color cast of i.e. small green or purple lens flares, by picking up the surrounding color.
    The next mode after color, called luminosity, should work in the same fashion: it should pick up the surrounding brightness (luminosity), and adjust the relative brightness of the area to be patched (i.e. reduce the brightness of a small lens flare, and preserve the texture underneath).
    Instead, luminosity doesn't work much different than the normal mode, it creates a new texture (based on content aware or surrounding area), and thereby destroying the original texture, instead of just fixing the local brightness.
    My question for Adobe: is this behavior intentional? or was the luminosity mode "overlooked" by accident?

    Here are some examples of how the brush is working in a real world example:
    As I have mentioned, normal, replace, and color work exactly as expected. color in LAB mode works even better than in RBG mode.
    what is not working as (at least by me expected) is luminosity mode (even if the color mode brush is used first). I thought/had hoped for that the luminosity mode would work some magic without creating new textures (the color mode is only very very lightly adding a new texture).
    I just wanted to hear what the logic behind this mode is... (and possibly find a 1-2 click tool to fix those lens flares.)

    I am having a lot of problems with the spot healing brush tool.  I am getting asked to use the alt key to pick a spot.  It should not be doing that.  It acts as if I were using the clone stamp tool, which I do not want to use now.  Can anyone help me with this?  My software is Photoshop CC and is up to date.

  • Healing Brush Tool

    Hi everyone. I need help please.
    My settings for the Healing Brush Tool are as follows:
    Size = 19 px
    Hardness = 50%
    Spacing = 15%
    Mode = Normal
    Source = Sampled
    I used "ALT-Left Click" to select my "Source".
    Here's my problem: Once I have selected my Source, I go to the area of the picture I want to modify and Left-Click and start to drag to cover the area I want to modify. Once I reach my end point, I release my mouse button. In doing so, the area I just modified returns to its original look before I modified it.
    I have tried everything I can think of and nothing seems to work.
    Is there anyone out there who can help me?
    Thank you so much in advance.
    Sean O'Sullivan.

    I just double checked both of your suggestions. Yes, the "Corrections" layer is selected and I am using the "Healing Brush Tool" also.
    I even shut down CS6 and restarted the program.......same thing.

    Your solution - Use the Clone tool (S key) - use the "show overlay" and "clipped" option in the Clone Source panel. This will allow you to position precisely where you want to clone over.
    Healing and patching will not work that well, on denim, or any repeated patterns. This is because the math it uses tends to mess up on rigid pattern based  textures. I once saw a demo for a future version (probably CS5 because it looked very 'complete' in the demo), which implies that there is a new feature on its way, that will be able to dynamically calculate underlying texture and image content - healing seemless transitions.
