Clone Stamp and Alignment Box Question - Cs3

I am learning Photoshop now. According to my tutorial (TT Basic), When I realease the Mouse and Alt key after selecting the clone tool, there should be a circle showing my selected area. I do not have a circle showing, so the alignment box cannot lock onto the area, I'm guessing. My Alt Crosshairs show up in Red, if that is important. Does the layer matter in the cloning, and the lock on or off? The tutorial isn't showing the layer boxes so I can't tell.

Not clear on what you are doing. When you set the clone source location with alt + left mouse click you will get a small circle with crosshair inside. You should have a circle representing the brush size where the clone is to take place, and when you clone there will be a crosshair at the clone source.
You say you do not have circle with cloning tool. Do you get a circle with other tools like brush and eraser?
In simple terms open a image, click create new layer in layers panel and with layer active (blue) use cloning tool. What do you get?

Clone Stamp and Healin Brush not Working

I am also having problems with this healing brush and clone stamp tool
I am running Windows 7 (64 bit on a powerful computer with 6 Gb Ram and pleanty of HDD space.)
I am using a wired mouse and do not have a tablet connected.
I have duplicated the Background as a backgound copy ab\nd mad the backgound invisible ther backgound copy layer is selected and is made visible.
Clicking on the either tool, I move the cursor to the source area I wish to clone from and [Alt]-Click. I then try to love the cursor to the destination area, the part I want to cover up with material from the source area.
What happens is the entire image moves showing as I move the mouse, revealing an other image below that does not move.
Either I do not understand what these tools are supposed to do, (I doubt that because I have used this tool several times in PSE 6 without problems.) or there is something terribly wrong with the program.
I underststand, fronm reading the forums that the same problem exists in CS4.
I have checked for updates but the only update that I have not downloaded and installed is support for Raw files from newer cameras.
PS The files I am working on are originally JPGs and have not been converted from any other file type.
Below is a screen shot illustrating the offset image.

BTW Does Adobe support this program? I can only find help this kind of help in the forums.

Hi,
This looks like you have the overlay feature turned on for the tool. When you select the clone or healing brush, look up in the options bar and select the icon for more options. Uncheck the box that says "Overlay". I am not sure if each one is independently set in Elements or if a check mark turning on or off overlay effects both tools as it does with Photoshop.
I don't have a copy of Elements that includes this feature but on the option bar the icon that you need to click is located below where it says "sign in" in the editor...to the right of where it says "all layers"---square icon.

Edit: I see while I was increasing my neighbor's herd of cows...MTSTUNER has posted another screenshot of the options panel. I'll leave this up anyway just in case you also have CS4.
This is a screen shot of The clone source palette settings that control the overlay in Photoshop CS3. I'll include this screenshot of where to look in Photoshop just in case you also have CS4 since you mentioned looking through the Photoshop forum for the answer. In Photoshop, this feature can be turned on/off in the clone source palette. The check mark will effect both clone stamp and healing brush...they share the current setting.
I actually forgot that this feature also effected the healing brush as well as the clone stamp. Want to guess how I keep mine set? LOL.
To be fair, I guess looking at this image I could see with a low opacity setting how it could be useful if I wanted to increase this herd of cows.

Hi there, I'm new to the forum but I have been using Adobe creative suite for quite some time now. As the thread title describes, I'm having an issue with my photoshop clone stamp and healing brush tool that I can't seem to fix on my own. I searched the internet all day, scrolling over many other posts but I can't seem to find anyone else who is having similar issues like I am having here.
This is kinda hard to explain but the issue I am having, is that when I go to use either my clone stamp or healing brush tool, the layer I am working on whether it is a flattened background or normal editable layer, get shifted as soon as I press the option key to make a selection and then when I go to move to the area to use these tools it acts like I've duplicated the entire layer and drags it around the screen, even though no such copy and paste has been made. All of my other tools are working normally and I wasn't having this issue last time I worked on anything in photoshop.
I am running:
a Mac OSX 10.5.8
CS4 extended version 11.0.2
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Your probably seeing the clone source overlay.
Go to Window>Clone Source and either uncheck:
Show Overlay for no overlay or check clipped to show the overlay
clipped to the size of the brush.

What are the Tools’ Blend Mode, Opacity and Flow (see Options Bar)?
Could you please post a screenshot with the pertinent Panels visible?
Have you tried resetting the Tools?

Clone Stamp Tool Align Function

I am using Elements 4.0 on a PC with XP Pro and I can't seem to get the Align option to turn off when I use the Clone Stamp Tool. Deselecting the "Aligned" option on the options toolbar has no effect: the pesky plus sign still follows the cursor everywhere it goes and changes the pixels I want to lay down. The manual doesn't tell me anything -- does anyone have a suggestion? Also, is there a way to set the distance of the plus sign from the cursor? Many thanks.

Thanks so much for the explanations -- I think I understand what is happening now. It seems, also, that the same behavior might apply to some other tools as well. I have a lot to learn....
I do have one more question for the group about the Clone Tool: the cursor always assumes the shape of a circle when cloning -- is it possible to give it a different shape, such as a square or rectangle? Or some irregular shape? Thanks.

CS4 Clone Stamp and Dodge/Burn not Working

CS4 clone stamp is kaput. Flattening image does not help. Source region shows in the cursor circle when pointing to target region, but when I left-click and hold, the target region shows, and cloning does not occur. Tried resetting the tool, no help. Opacity is 59, flow is 85 and hardness is 51.
Likewise tried the dodge/burn tool, does not work either.
Using PS v. 11.0.1 Tried to download windows patch to update to v. 11.0.2, but the msi file is not recognized as a valid windows installer.
I have CS3 on my notebook. Cloning the same region there works fine.
Any ideas appreciated.

I don't see anything obvious you've done wrong.
Some things to try:
Try temporarily disabling the use of OpenGL through Edit - Preferences - Performance, or selecting an alternate level (Basic/Normal/Advanced).
Try disabling the "Show Overlay" feature in the Clone Source panel.
Check the web site of the manufacturer of your video card for updated video drivers.

Clone stamp and healing brush issue

having problems with photoshop 5.5... new issue for me, as there weren't any issues yesterday. both the 'healing brush tool' and the 'clone stamp tool' are giving problems. when i press the alt key to collect an area to sample, on my screen it looks as tho the hand tool engages, and there is a second (copy looking) image moving around my screen over the original. i've already tried the 'tool reset all' function and rebooted... still haveing the same issue. anybody have some advise? help a guy?

Problem Defining Source in CS5 for Clone Stamp and Healing Brush

I am struggling to define the source point for clone stamp or healing brush in Photoshop CS5. When I first installed the program it was working just as the instructions were set out in the help menu (e.g. alt click to define the source and then move the cursor to find the area to fix). I don't know what has happened, or if I've accidentally re-set something, but now when I 'alt-click' the entire photo is selected, and even when I let go, there is a layer consisting of the entire photo (not just one point) that moves over an exact copy of the same photo underneath. This happens regardless of whether I've created an extra adjustment layer. Help! (it used to work just fine. I don't know what I've done to change it)

Ok I am not sure what you are trying to do, but I believe it is to repair or correct some anomoly on an image you are working on.
With CS5 there is the patch tool the healing brush tool and the new spot healing tool (very cool of you have not played with it yet.)
I think what you are looking at, The "Clone Stamp" is not the tool you are looking for. the clone stamp esentually does exactly what you are talking about. It clones the layer you have highlighted so when you run your brush it paints that image.
The healing and redeye removal tools are all one grouping right click on the brush to make your choice.

Clone Stamp Tool Alignment

With apology for the rookie question, I can't seem to figure or find an answer to my question...
I'm trying to clone from one layer (photo) to another layer (photo), and simply want an exact pixel-to-pixel replacement. For instance I'd like to copy pixel (10, 20) from the first layer to pixel (10, 20) on the second layer.
I've found that I can set the upper, left corner of Layer 1 as the "source" (using Alt+click), and then go to my "destination" layer, and click on the same upper, left location, and then subsequent click-and-drags will then be aligned, but that is not an elegant process. I'm assuming that there's just a button click or option that I'm not aware of that will make all of this much simpler.

OK Brian. Well if you are sure you got the best result you could with Refine edge....
You said Magic Wand, but if you have Refine Edge then you are using CS5, so the Quick Select tool is heaps better.
You mentioned wrinkles in the white background. You might be able to paint them out using a White brush set to Overlay mode.
I think a lot of fashion shots have the flyaway hair removed completely. Dave Hill, for instance, adds a Hair Edge layer to his images where he paints in the edges smoothing them out. You can (just about) see the layers in this video.
But if it was me, from reading your description, I would have another go at the selection and refine edge. Perhaps use some feather, and negative 'Shift Edge'. It took me quite a while to get decent results with Refine edge, but as is the way of these things, it just seems to work now. I add radius until I have gone to far, and then nudge it back. Then click on Smart radius, then adjust the Feather and Contrast controls. You can use the Smooth slider if you want to keep individual hairs, but on the other hand, it would fix the problem.
This is reading like an egg sucking lesson, but it is difficult to know where folk are at with Photoshop.

Clone Stamp & Healing Brush and alignment

I have PSE9. I am having excellent success in removing collars from the dog pictures I am working on when using the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools in combination. The book I am learning from says if I want to select pixels from a single source to deselect the align option. However whether I have the align option selected or not, I am getting the corresponding crosshair sampling pixels as the tools are brushed on the image. I know I can do even better if I can maintain a single sampling source. How do I select and maintain a single sampling source for these two tools? Thanks, Jim.

Thank you for your response, but forgive me for asking for clarity. I will be removing alot of dog collars. The collar is red and is surrounded by white and black fur. Just to make sure I understand, as I use the two tools, even with the Aligned option deselected, I will need to keep identifying source pixels multiple times as I brush out the collar. There is absolutely no way ((I tried the single click) to select one source and brush wherever I like on the photo and remove the replace the pixels with the one source. Clone Stamp does not work

I have photoshop CS4, and whenever I try to sample an area to clone, then clone the area to the place I want, the entire image moves around, and I can't clone anything. When I am moving the image, there seems to be another same exact picture underneath, but when I check the layer panel, I only have one background layer. What is going on with my clone stamp, I never had this problem before. Help, I need to pass my assignments in.

That having been said. I think you might have "Show Overlay" checked in your clone stamp panel. I have CS3 so don't know how different the setting may be in CS4. If "show Overlay" isn't checked in the clone stamp palette, you could try a reset of the clone stamp tool. (Right click the stamp tool icon's little drop down arrow in the Options bar (not the tool box), and select reset tool. If that doesn't work, the next step would be to reset Photoshop preferences.

After Effects problem with clone stamp tool

Hi,
I've been using clone stamp tool in Photoshop for years and has no problem with it. But somehow I could never get it work on After Effects. After alt+click to select source I can then click (and hold left mouse button), rub and change the target area as expected but as soon as I let go the mouse button the target area reverts back to original.
What did I do wrong?

First question that I have for you is did you look in the help files?. Simply type clone stamp in the search After Effects Help field at the top right corner of the application frame it you will find all kinds of information. There are a few good tutorials linked directly from the help file. After Effects Help | Paint tools: Brush, Clone Stamp, and Eraser
Because After Effects works with video you have to make sure you have the correct options for your clone stamp or your paint tool selected and you are working in the correct window. It is not so much that the clone stamp is not working, it is just that you probably do not have it set up correctly.

Clone stamp in masks?! Why?

Make default when chaning from paintbrush to clonestamp (When working with masks or always), that it paints in the image layer, not in the masklayer.
Don´t think it´s to many people that use the clone-tool in masks. And if they do, let them select the mask layer.
All people at the office (and several more I guess) is painting in mask layers, and then a missed spot of dust shows up, changing to clone stamp and starts to paint in the mask......arghh

Anything you would use for painting can and will be used for painting in masks.
I don't have a great reason for why - I just know that the tools are used, and should be available.
The counter question is: why should we disable a valid feature? Just because some people make mistakes using that feature is not a justification, otherwise cars, bicycles, and stairs would have been disallowed long ago.

Clone stamp disappeared from Ps CC. Does anyone know what to do about this?

Hi Everyone, I have PS CC on an iMac and when I started with CC, the clone stamp and pattern stamp shared a spot and they both worked. However, now the clone stamp has disappeared and I only have the pattern stamp. The other day it showed back up but now it is gone again. Does anyone know what to do about this?
