Clone Stamp Source Crosshairs Missing

My current clone stamp tool is missing the "+" sign cross hairs that show source of clone. would you please show me how to restore those, and/or how to reset tool options.

OK now I get what you mean. Caps Lock turns ON the crosshairs that show the center of the current clone TARGET area, and HIDES the circular border of the target; this gives a very precise preview, and is itself very useful.
However, the "+" (actually, it looks more like the math symbol than crosshairs) that I was referring to, in my initial posting, shows the location of the current SOURCE area of the clone. That is the item that has mysteriously disappeared and re-appeared. Would like to know what controls the comings and goings of that symbol.

  • Clone stamp source point

I am doing some retouching work on a portrait to remove/minimize wrinkles around the subject's neck. I am utilizing a lighten layer and darken layer with the clone stamp set to a very low opacity to affect only those areas. I would like to set the source point of the clone stamp to one area. I don't want the clone stamp source point to move with my my clone strokes. Is there a way for me to set the source point and have it remain stationary?
Many Thanks in advance for any answers provided.
    DL

The source point will always move during a stroke.  That's the definition of a clone operation.  If you want to just paint the same color across an entire stroke that sounds more like just a traditional Brush operation.
Now, you can have the source point start in the same place for each successive stroke...  You accomplish that by unchecking the [ ] Aligned box at the top of the Photoshop main window.
    Hope this helps!

  • CS5: Clone stamp source movement not available?

In CS4, using the clone tool, I could hold option and move around until I found exactly where I wanted to clone from.
In CS5, when I hold option and try to move around with the pen on the tablet, it becomes a cursor icon.  Is there a way around this?  Seems like a step backwards to me?
    Thanks in advance.

Your description of your problem doesn't make any sense unfortunately
There have been no changes to the Clone features in CS5 as far as I'm aware, so things should be behaving exactly the same. Check that …
    • Your preferences > cursors in CS4 and 5 have the same settings
    • In your Clone Source panel you have the  same items under "Show Overlay" and "clipped" checked.

  • Problem Defining Source in CS5 for Clone Stamp and Healing Brush

I am struggling to define the source point for clone stamp or healing brush in Photoshop CS5. When I first installed the program it was working just as the instructions were set out in the help menu (e.g. alt click to define the source and then move the cursor to find the area to fix). I don't know what has happened, or if I've accidentally re-set something, but now when I 'alt-click' the entire photo is selected, and even when I let go, there is a layer consisting of the entire photo (not just one point) that moves over an exact copy of the same photo underneath. This happens regardless of whether I've created an extra adjustment layer. Help! (it used to work just fine. I don't know what I've done to change it)

Ok I am not sure what you are trying to do, but I believe it is to repair or correct some anomoly on an image you are working on.
With CS5 there is the patch tool the healing brush tool and the new spot healing tool (very cool of you have not played with it yet.)
I think what you are looking at, The "Clone Stamp" is not the tool you are looking for. the clone stamp esentually does exactly what you are talking about. It clones the layer you have highlighted so when you run your brush it paints that image.
The healing and redeye removal tools are all one grouping right click on the brush to make your choice.
    I hope this helps.

  • "Could not use the clone stamp because the area to clone has not been defined (Alt-click to define a source point)".

Few users access our Photoshop through Citrix on a mac but use a Windows 7 platform once they're in Citrix.  They're all having issues using the Clone Stamp tool.  Get the error "Could not use the clone stamp because the area to clone has not been defined (Alt-click to define a source point)". We've reset the clone stamp tool, reset all the tools, and reset the preferences. We've made sure that we're in All Layers.  Nothing seems to be working.  None of the other forums helped either.  Adobe support is no help either.
    Thanks,
    Moe.

Did you check with Citrix support?  Did you try both of the Alt keys.

If a tool is acting up, one suggestion is to reset the tool.
Ctrl-click on the clone tool icon in the Options bar and select Reset Tool.

  • Clone Stamp & Healing Brush and alignment

I have PSE9. I am having excellent success in removing collars from the dog pictures I am working on when using the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools in combination. The book I am learning from says if I want to select pixels from a single source to deselect the align option. However whether I have the align option selected or not, I am getting the corresponding crosshair sampling pixels as the tools are brushed on the image. I know I can do even better if I can maintain a single sampling source. How do I select and maintain a single sampling source for these two tools? Thanks, Jim.

Thank you for your response, but forgive me for asking for clarity. I will be removing alot of dog collars. The collar is red and is surrounded by white and black fur. Just to make sure I understand, as I use the two tools, even with the Aligned option deselected, I will need to keep identifying source pixels multiple times as I brush out the collar. There is absolutely no way ((I tried the single click) to select one source and brush wherever I like on the photo and remove the replace the pixels with the one source. Thank you for your patience, Jim.

  • Clone stamp acting different?

I am just noticing my CS5 clone stamp seems to hold the area i sourced from as i move the brush around. Is this some new behavior or can i disable it? it is very annoying to see more than just my circular brush shape.

I guess i can give it another chance.my first impression was less than excited, and a little disconcerting as it held onto the selecting as i moved about. I am sure their is some logical reason for the design change.I always just lined the crosshair up when i needed precision.

  • Photoshop CC Clone Stamp not working for me

There was another thread about this, several people reported this problem, but so far no response from Adobe. Let's try this again.
The Clone Stamp no longer works right. It's slow and sampling results are all over the place. It will sample from areas I never even ALT clicked on. And it can't keep up with rapid sampling and stamping. As is, Photoshop CC is totally unusable for photo retouching work.
I switched back to CS6, which still works fine, so the problem is NOT on my end.
    Running Windows 7 64bit. Photoshop CC 64bit.
Can we get some response from Adobe please ??

I hope I have not missed something and am reinventing the wheel here, but I had a think about how Windows uses the Alt key.  People are quite right, that even with the Clone tool selected, using the Alt key initially brings up the Menus (waiting for their 'mostly' first letter short cuts) but Windows releases the Alt key as soon as you left click on the source.
But what other ways does Windows use the Alt key?  I think this is something Noel would be the best to answer, but THIS LINK mentions using Alt left mouse to move a window in Ubuntu, for instance. But Ubuntu is not Windows I guess.   I am way out of my comfort zone with this stuff!
There is somebody HERE talking about that same Alt click drag facility to resize windows, but this time with Linux, and he is given a link to a tool that impliments the same feature in Windows.  What I am saying/asking here, is do any of the people with problems have anything else on their systems that traps an Alt click?
As a little aside, I installed Lazy Nezumi while using my laptop, because it is cheap as chips, and I need all the help I can get when it comes to drawing nice lines in Photoshop.  It works great, and does everything it claims, but it also messes up some Photoshop shortcuts.  It allows you to reprogram those shortcuts to other keys though, so I shall be doing that when I put it on my main system.  You see my point though?

  • Having Trouble With Clone Stamp

    Hello!
I used the Magic extractor to take something out of a picture. It left that checkered background so I thought I would use the clone stamp to clone the rest of the background. I hit alt and then clicked what I wanted to be cloned. Then I let go of alt and started draging around on the checkered background. Nothing happened. Any ideas about what I might have done wrong?
    Thanks!

    Nisha,
there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to clone over transparencies (checkered areas).
If you are cloning on a new layer, make sure "Use all Layers" is checked in the Options Bar.
Also make sure the little crosshair that indicates the cloning source doesn't slip into the transparent area as well, which happens easily when you move fast. Use short strokes and unless it has to be aligned, remove the checkmark for that.

  • Clone Stamp won't sample

I'm running Photoshop CC, up to date, on a Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite.
I try to use the clone stamp, press Option and click to select (the crosshairs appear, indicating Photoshop knows I'm pressing Option), but I still consistently get the error message stating that a source point has not been defined and that I should option+click to select a source. The same thing occurs regardless of whether the stamp is told to sample current or all layers. I've tired with both my external mouse and keyboard and my laptop mouse and keyboard, to no avail. I've also tried restarting Photoshop and rebooting my machine, but it still refuses to sample.
Any ideas on what else might be wrong? Alternatively, is there a different way to select the source point for the clone stamp?

When you have clicked and move the cursor around is there any change in the Clone Source Panel?

  • Clone Stamp Selection Failure in CS6

I try using the clone stamp but selection fails with this error message:
Could not use the clone stamp because the area to clone has not been defined (Alt-click to define source point).
When I press Alt, I see the characteristic selection bullseye. But, afterwards, a right-click of the mouse reveals an open circle and the error message.
I note that the key works for menu selections (e.g., Alt-File) and other actions.
I have closed PS and re-opened. Reset the clone stamp tool, closed and reopened, etc., to no avail.

    Mr. Kelly,
That seems to have fixed the problem: left-super+alt. I can live with that!
Regarding the suggestions about remapping - look-and-feel, etc.: the suggested track are not avialalbe under Xubuntu 12.04. And, I would be reluctant to re-map the super-key since it has functional significance when running Win (I have both Win-7 and XP in VMs).
I've bookmarked the wine wiki link for future reference.
WINE: Do you know if CS6 / Bridge / Adobe Raw, etc., work well? I had not thought of trying Wine. I've never had luck with it in the past - a waste of time for few apps that I must run in Win. Since I've got PShop working well in a VM, I'm thinking of sticking with that and not to invite new problems.
Thanks a lot for delving into this for me.
Glad I bought PShop - I've been using The Gimp for a long time but, while taking PS  classes at Montgomery College, decided to buy. I'd been looking for knowledge/tips that might help in Gimp but, during the second class, decided to make the leap.
    Best regards,

  • Clone Stamp not working in Elements 5

I have tried the trouble shooting sugestions on page 245 of Photoshop Elements 5, The Missing Manual by Barbara Brundage. However, I have been unable to get my clone stamp to work. Previously the clone stamp was working o.k.  Do you have any other suggestions that I might try?
Also, are there some good editing advantages/improvements by upgrading to Elements 7 ?

I held the keys down while starting the editor from the welcome screen and
got the box to delete the preferences. However I have not been able to get
the clone stamp to work. The delete preferences must have worked because my
brushes were changed back to the original setting. I normally use a
different setting to show the brushes as circles. I have been trying to
clone with the Size: 21 ps; Mode: Normal; Opacity: 100% and Aligned checked.
I have tried both checking and unchecking Aligned and Sample All Layers. I
tried a different photo but with the same results. When I Alt click to clone
I get a small circle with something similar to a plus sign in the circle.
The Edit shows an "Undo clone stamp" each time I Alt Click and try to clone
    but nothing was cloned.
This is the first time that I've encountered this problem.

  • Is there a Clone Stamp overlay facility in CS2?

Hi - I've got two versions of Photoshop: CS2 version 9, and Elements 9. I've been using Elements for a couple of years for tweaking and cropping photos but have become interested in the restoration and retouching. So I downloaded the (now, free) CS2 from the Adobe website. With its enhanced features, it can work magic but I notice that when using the clone stamp tool, unlike Elements, I don't see an overly within the clone circle, meaning that it's not as easy to match up edges etc before committing with a click. I can't find any reference to a clone stamp overlay option in CS2. Have I missed something? If not, I guess I'll switch between programs.
    Thanks

Thanks for this. I thought the difference was about 5 years but I take on board that clone stamp overlay didn't exist with CS2.
As for 'freeness' I downloaded CS2 from the Adobe website for no money, which satisfies my criteria :-)
Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question.
