Clone stamp tool on a 3D object (CS5)

I'm getting very odd color corruption, using the clone stamp tool on a 3D object. I'm using it for one of the main aspects of PS 3D, painting out UV seams on an object. And I'm getting a very odd artifact: an entirely brown texture is, when sampled with the stamp tool, producing bright cyan and purple pixels on the outside of my feathered stamp brush. I never saw this before, but then I didn't end up using 3D painting in CS4 as much as I ordinarily would have, as my workload changed a lot.
But I'm using it now, and am seeing this annoying artifact. Does anyone else see this? Any known workarounds?

I also suddenly have this problem. I am using an ATI Firepro V5800, and have had no problems with any of the painting tools when using 3D in photoshop. Now it is a real problem! For now the projection onto a new layer and merging down is helping a bit, but when i merge down the edges between the original and merged layer change...you can see a clear shift in the colour between the two.
Very annoying! Perhaps a bug that's come with a new update? My graphics card drivers are up to date, the same driver that i was using when clone stamp used to work!

  • Photoshop CS5 Clone Stamp Tool option-click just stopped working, why?

I've been using clone stamp tool option-click (healing brush  option-click also) on Photoshop CS5 on my Mac 10.6.5 and it stopped  working suddenly on Monday.  Had just used it on Sunday.  So, I've tried  to isolate the problem.
    1. Went to Apple store and my keyboard and  mouse work fine on their inhouse systems running Photosochop CS5.   Problem still exists on home system.
    2. Adobe photoshop suggested I go back to Mac 10.6.3.  I did and problem still exits.
    3. Reset all presets in CS5.  Problem still exists.
    4.  Spent several hours with Adobe Photoshop tech on phone -- he couldn't  make it work remotely either using his keyboard.  Reloaded Photoshop  from scratch.  Problem still exists.
    Question:
Could this be a hardware problem?  Graphic board problem?
Or is this a software problem aside from Mac OS and CS5?

    Hi Joan
It sounds like you are not having fun at all : )
    >I talked with a for fee Mac guru today who says I need to wipe slate clean and install operating system from scratch since I did not use time machine.
.....you ever notice how easy it is for a consultant to tell you what to do when they don't have to do it?
..... I wonder why the guru thought your system was gone if your new user account was working?
If your new user account is working.... why not use it?  The system seems fine but something went screwy with the settings in your original account.
hopefully someone else will chime in here with more insight before you start from scratch.

  • A problem using clone stamp tool

    Hi guys,
I use After Effects CC last version on a pc under windows 7 ultimate..
This problem must be simple to solve but I just don't see how.
I have an aerial view of the Vesuvio. The volcano makes a 10 to 15° circular motion due to the helicopter moving.
I need to eliminate the actual houses and other trails on the border of the crater to have my volcano as it was 2000 years ago when it erupted and destroyed Pompeii.
I succeeded to do that with the clone stamp tool without a problem and it takes of course into account all the different shades of earth on the cliffs of the volcano.
But when I preview the shot, while the volcano moves, I can see the stamped touches of paint moving as if floating above the volcano. The older surface is not visible as I wanted but the new one does't follow the movement. I'm sure I forgot to do something but what? Should I do the clone stamp in conjunction with motion tracker, if so how? I tried once but got the same problem.
    Thanks in advance
    Claude

OK, I see a bunch of painting on the nearest slope of the volcano that does not track with the shot. Your biggest problem is workflow using the clone stamp. You are just not using it properly. If it were me, the first think I would do is to use the After Effects tracker to stabilize this part of the volcano so that it didn't move in the frame.
Now you only have perspective issues to deal with.
Next I would duplicate the stabilized layer, pre-compose the duplicate moving all attributes to the new composition, name the preComp - clone or paint pre-comp, then open the pre-comp in the layer panel and use the clone stamp to repair the parts of the image you want to repair. You can then add other trackers for the parts of the image you want to clone or use a time offset to make your painted layer match the mountain.
I probably would do something completely different. I'd export the middle frame of this move as a Photoshop file, then go in and paint  the mountain the way I wanted it to look. I'd mask the background in photoshop so I only see the sides and face of the volcano. Then I'd bring my painted mountain back into AE and animate distortion, scale and rotation so the painted layer matches the original perspective on the shot as close as possible. When that is done I'd go back to my main comp, add a null, tie the null's position to the anchor point of the stabilized footage, then parent the original copy of the footage and the painted copy to the null to put the camera movement back in the scene.
Here's a tutorial on how to apply tracking data to a clone stamp in AE:
Removing an Object with Clone Stamp - After Effects Tutorial
I am pretty convinced that you added the smoke... Use the same procedure to get the smoke to look right. It's also floating in an unnatural manner. You could also replace the far background with a matte painting of the city using the same mask, duplicate, paint in Photoshop, then distort and remove the stabilization.

  • Clone Stamp Tool Freezes

The clone stamp tool causes After Effects to freeze.  This wasn't happening before I ugraged to CS5.  After a few strokes, the program just freezes out of nowhere.  I am working with HD, ProRes 422 files, on a Mac 2.4 dual core laptop.  4G Ram.  But as I said, I had no problem prior to upgrading to CS5, and I had worked with the stamp tool many times with the same type of files, on the same computer.  There's another post for the same problem, however that person was working in CS4, and it doesn't look like a solution was found.  Does anyone know why this is happening and what the solution is?  Thanks.

Have you installed the 10.0.1 update?

  • Problem with Clone Stamp Tool Transparency

Hi there, I am working in CS5 and lately when I have been drawing with the Clone stamp tool, the cloned content seems to be transparent instead of being a 100% opaque clone of the source. The tool is in normal mode but the result looks almost identical multiply mode. I am coming from CS3 and I have not run into this problem in the past. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

…and the align sample to current layer is checked on.
This implies that you need to understand what the settings actually do. You have a choice "current layer", "current and below" or "all layers". These have nothing to with Align, they are all about which layers are sampled.
"Aligned" is about where multiple clicks of the Clone Stamp sample from. How they relate to the source area that you sampled.
Opportunity to air a major complaint of mine - "Aligned" automatically keeps checking itself. Because some Grandpa (photoshop 6 or 7 can't remember) decided that Option double click should be a 'shortcut' to keep Aligned checked all the time. Because they always work with Aligned on I guess, they think everyone should. Unfortunately it means that if you are a fast and experienced user, you have to waste a fair amount of time each day locating a tiny checkbox, to turn the damn thing off again. And again. And again.

  • Clone Stamp Tool and smudge tool issue

iMac 21.5";   new on 12/14/2011;   OS Version 10.7.3;  2.7GHz Intel Core i5;  AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB.
Two and Three Layer, all layers are copies of background layer, plus two adjustment layers, 8 Bit file:
Clone Stamping directly on image layer with Background layer directly below and with copy of Background layer directly below.
    Intuos 4 tablet and pen.
    Clone Stamp tool Setup:
Layer Adjustment parameter set to either This Layer and Below or All Layers.
    All other parameters at default.
    Using simple soft brush.
    =====================================
The bug: Clone Stamp too will only affect the layer selected to do the actual cloning.
Tried it in every configuation possible without adjust the tool defaults, and no layers below will get the cloning corrections or stamping.

    Welcome back gang.
Made a couple new discoveries while double checking.
Again, the same four layer setup: Background-Background copy-HSB Adj layer-Levels Adj layer.
The problem replicates with the Adj layers clipped or not.
The key is any tweak in the Adj layers will cause the issue.
Any Adj layer tweak seems to get exaggerated when smudging on a layer.
For example, increasing the gamma or center slider in the Levels box will cause all bright pixels to go white and darker pixels to go black.
I do not know the threshold luminance pixel value but I would guess it is at 128/128.
Modest tweaks to the Adj layer, for example raising the gamma slider to 1.20 will cause the smudge to posterize or turn white.
Tweaking the HSB Saturation slider to +12 will cause color posterization.
Counter to what I had stated upstream, any setting of the Smudge tool will cause this to happen.
Also, as said upstream, the performance goes down such that the spinning balls appear frequently.
In other words, it does not appear to be a 1-to-1 relationship of tweaks made in the Adj layer to the effect of the Smudge tool.
My guess is that the Sample All Layers option is multiplying the color and luminance values fo the layers together.
Plus, it was probably designed to do so but I do not think it was to be so pronounced.
Still amazes me that the situation never occurred or did I notice it until now, and the issue exists in CS5 too.
When did PS add the Sample All Layers option to the Smudge tool?
    Anybody else?

  • Clone stamp tool disables keyboard

I'm working on an iMac, OSX (10.7.4) with CS5.1. Ever since I uploaded my new Photoshop program months ago, it disables the alphanumeric keys on my key pad when I use the clone stamp tool. I have to restart my computer in order for my keyboard to work again.
I have talked to Adobe service multiple times, had the software replaced, had a service agent work with my machine from a distance, discussed the problem with Apple (they say it's an Adobe issue), paid a professional to resolve it, reinstalled the software multiple times and ways, worked in safe mode, worked as another user, but the problem persists.
I am a full-time graphic designer with my own business and usually have Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop all open at the same time, so when I have to restart it is a major problem that I encounter multiple times during my work day.
Is there anyone that can help? I wish I had never purchased the upgrade and now fear CS6. What can I do?

The application can't disable the keyboard for other apps, or after the app has exited.
That can only happen at an OS level.
Also, I just tried using the clone stamp too, and my number key pad is still working just fine.
You probably need to talk to Apple again and ask what inside the OS could do that, even if it is triggered by an application (but it sounds like an OS or driver level bug).

  • Problem using clone stamp tool

I have a composition which I created from prem pro dynamic link. There is only one layer in my composition (a .mov clip) which I have removed an unwanted item from using the clone stamp tool however the item is still showing in my comp and therefore not updating in prem pro? Anyone help please?
    Cheers,Alan

I wasn't using the current frame option, it was set to constant, however just to explain:-
I was using Prem pro and replaced a clip via the dynamic link to AfterEffects, the layer it automatically put in the composition was the actual .mov clip. This clip had an object I wanted to remove, which I did using the clone tool, however this did not replicate in the composition. I ended up creating a new composition and imported the same clip, carried out the same procedure and it worked OK?

  • Photoshop CS4 Clone Stamp Tool behavior

I installed CS4 on a Dual Pentium Xeon 2.4ghz Compaq W8000 system with 3GB of RD 800mhz RAM and Windows XP Pro w/SP3 and all updates. The video card is a ATI Radion AGP-3855 w/512 GDDR3 RAM with latest drivers.
When using the clone stamp tool, after making a sourse selection there is a "trail" that follows the cursor to the destination (similar to using a mouse trail so you can tell where the cursor is on a notebook computer)
When the cursor slows down at the stamp destination the "trail" catches up and covers the destination with the sourse "patch" not allowing precise targeting. It is so cumbersome to use as to make the clone stamp tool almost unusable. The density of the "patch" is not affected by opacity settings.
Is this a new behaviour for this tool in CS4? And if so can it be turned off? Do I have a problem unique to my system?
    Murray

    Hi Anthony,
Good point and thanks for suggesting the clone source features. I can see that it has tremendous potential and will revisit it to see if it will benifit my work. My immediate problem was that overlay was on as a default and it was not obvious to me where to address it.
I have not used this forum before as I have a couple of gurus I lean on, but was really impressed by the immediate help I recieved here.
I am a wildlife-mammal-stock shooter and I have been using Quick Mask, with a feathered brush to make small to medium selections on a, sometimes, flipped version of the image I am working on, or from another one. Moving the selection to a separate transparent (background) layer and then bringing it into my image as a separate layer and aligning it by setting the opacity at 50% and then using rotation, opacity and layer masking to finish the work.I then use the clone stamp at a low (20-50%) opacity to do additional "painting" and to blend the QM object. This approach is cumbersome, but highly effective, however I may be able to use "your" clone source options for simpler or different tasks.
    Thanks,
    Murray

  • Tracking clone stamp tool

    Hey..!
How do I track a clip and get the clone stamp tool to follow that track? Even if the object that I'm tracking is in a different place that the spot I'm trying to cover?
I'm looking for some kind og expression to get the position of the clone tool to follow a Null or something along those lines..?
    Thanks
    /Per

Expressions for this kind of thing are very difficult and nearly impossible if there is a lot of movement and perspective change in the shot. Here's why. Let's say your shot was taken with the camera very close to the clock panning from left to right to center the clock. With the camera very close to the subject as the camera clock starts to come into frame the distance between the left and right side of the base is much shorter than it is when the clock is centered in the frame. This means that you must track scale and position and make adjustments to your clone position based on the change in scale as well as the change in position. If you throw in horizon angle changes like you would get if the camera was tilted to the left as well as panned to the left but straightened (or the shot was hand held and the horizon didn't stay level) then you would also have to track and make adjustments for rotation. Now you start getting into trigonometry. Lastly, you run into problems that crop up with the distance and angle of the original sample. because there are no controls to modify the location of the source. If your source is 100 pixels to the left and 50 pixels above the clone position it will always be 100 pixels to the left and 50 pixels above the sample point. If the perspective and scale changes then your source will change and the clone image will change.
Now that you understand the problem I'll show you how to use an expression to offset position from a track point. I will assume that there is no rotation in the shot.
This is how you approach the problem. You'll need to collect data from the tracker position (t), the scale change (ts), the initial position of the clone (ip), the offset between the clone position and the tracker position at the first frame (ofst), then you will have to calculate the change in offset or adjusted offset (aofst) as the scale (ts) changes by multiplying the offset (ofst) by the scale (ts), then you will have to calculate the new position by adding the adjusted offset to the track position. Here's the expression and it assumes that you have applied tracking data to a null you have named "Tracker":
    t = thisComp.layer("Tracker").transform.position;
    ts = thisComp.layer("Tracker").transform.scale/100;
    ip = t.valueAtTime(0);
    ofst = (value - ip);
    aofst = [ofst[0]*ts[0], ofst[1]*ts[1]];
    np = t + aofst;
Line 2, track scale is divided by 100 to convert percentage to a decimal so the multiplication in line 5 will give the right result.
Line 3 uses the value at time function to retrieve the position of the tracker at the start of the comp.
Line 4 calculates the offset by subtracting the value of the property, the clone position from the initial position of the tracker.
Line 5 adjusts the offset by multiplying the offset by the percentage. You have do to this calculation inside an array because scale and position are both arrays.
Line 6 simply adds the adjusted offset to the tracker position.
If there was rotation to throw into the mix you would have to use trigonometry to calculate the x and y offset based on the angle between the tracker position and the clone position. This would be fruitless because the offset position of the source for the clone would not change. In my example it would always be 100 pixels to the left and 50 pixels above the position of the clone.
A better solution with a moving shot would be to use the Motion Tracker to stabilize the shot removing the movement rotation and scale, applying that stabilization to the shot, duplicating the shot and naming the duplicate Clone, then using the original stabilized footage as the source, do the repairs with the clone tool, then set the clone to paint on transparent and drag that into your main comp and remove the stabilization using a null and a couple of expressions and a duplicate of your stabilized footage.

Photoshop Elements 8.  "Could not use Clone Stamp Tool because of a program error."  Please help.

    Try this:
    Open your picture file
    Access the clone stamp tool
Hold down the ALT key on the keyboard and left click on the area from which you wish to clone, then release the ALT key, and click to place the pixels at the destination
    TIPS:
It is a good idea to open a blank layer at the top in the layers palette, and do the cloning on this layer. Be sure that "sample all layers" at the top is checked. You can change the layer opacity if necessary
Use the bracket keys next to the letter p on the keyboard to increase & decrease the size of the cursor

  • "Could not use the clone stamp tool because of a program error". How to fix this fault?

When I try to use the Clone Stamp Tool I am met with the message shown above. I have tried in all the ways I could find to beat this: different photos, switched the computer off and on again, run a de-bugging program through it (Advanced System Care 5 Pro) and Microsoft's own stuff. The problem exists solidly and, without one of its most important picture repair tools Photoshop is pretty much useless.
I have just set this new Photoshop Elements 10 program up on my Windows 7 (64) laptop. I have plenty of memory and a large enough hard drive; the machine is fairly new, stable and does not usually suffer from programming problems. I have found nothing on any of the Adobe Forums, or in other sites, to give me a hint as to what has caused the problem other than a bad program disk. My first conclusion was that I should reinstall the program, but it appears that I will then lose one of my two registration rights, that strikes me as being ridiculous as reinstallation is surely the most logical thing to do with a potentially faulty program disk! But I would have to uninstall to reinstall, and that's when the the second registration cuts in I am advised. I have tried every way I can think of to beat this to no avail. I'll be truly grateful if someone can help me out on this. Thank you!

Thanks guys! I'm afraid that I'm still not sure: I've been told that uninstalling - after of course deactivating - amounts to a life gone... Yet according to the set of licence rules Adobe has, you're allowed to copy programs in a mirror image which, of course, would be used for a clean wipe - and surely that contradicts their set of rules? The rules seem to imply that that would be okay: no life lost. My concern is that through no fault of my own I have what appears to be a duff program; it's out of warranty now (my fault - I didn't install it until I could buy a more heavy-duty laptop). If the rule is "two-strikes-and-your-out, then I lose my last reactivation after THIS installation. I will get in touch with Adobe - but I live in the UK, and therein lies the problem: the equivalent of $39 dollars for the chat and whatever else it might cost is off-putting to me I'm afraid. If I could find out whether or not Adobe has a patch or something I would be a lot more happy about it all - the reinstallation after all may NOT cure the problem and I'd be stuck with a bunch of coffee cup coasters! Hey, ho...

  • Adobe photoshop elements 9 . i cannot get the circle to appear on clone stamp tool and spot healing

adobe photoshop elements 9 , i cannot get the circle  to appear using clone stamp tool and the spot healing brush . i`ve tried restating my computer and unloading and loading the adobe disc . but still no good .

I had this same problem and was searching for answers. I also prefer using a circle instead of crosshairs. I hope you've figured it out by now, but, if you haven't, here is the answer (I am using Elements 9, but, it should work for other versions I think):
    1. Open up Elements Editor, Click on Edit, Click on Preferences, Click on Display & Cursors.
    2. Under Painting Cursors, select Full Size Brush Tip
    3. (optional) - if you want crosshairs within your circle, then also select Show Crosshair in Brush Tip.
    4. Click ok.
Now use the brush, and it should have a circle to use.
P.S. Sometimes if you have your Caps Lock key on, that removes the circle as well.
