Clone Stamp won't sample

I'm running Photoshop CC, up to date, on a Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite.
I try to use the clone stamp, press Option and click to select (the crosshairs appear, indicating Photoshop knows I'm pressing Option), but I still consistently get the error message stating that a source point has not been defined and that I should option+click to select a source. The same thing occurs regardless of whether the stamp is told to sample current or all layers. I've tired with both my external mouse and keyboard and my laptop mouse and keyboard, to no avail. I've also tried restarting Photoshop and rebooting my machine, but it still refuses to sample.
Any ideas on what else might be wrong? Alternatively, is there a different way to select the source point for the clone stamp?

When you have clicked and move the cursor around is there any change in the Clone Source Panel?

  • Clone stamp - fixed position sampling?

It seems there is a way to fix the sampling to a fixed position on the alt-click so that the cross does not move even though you are moving the brush. Is that correct and if so, how?

Also,be aware that unchecking that box does not hold all the time. not sure if its a recognized bug or not, but it constantly rechecks itself on my machine.

  • CS5 64-bit Content Aware Fill kills Healing brush, clone stamp

    Here's the deal:
    1)  Open image for retouching-background layer only
    2)  Make copy of background layer 'cause I never retouch there and CAF won't work on the blank layer I use for all other retouching
    3)  Add blank layer above the previous two layers for clone stamp/healing work--can't use it for content-aware fill
    4)  Find something that will retouch better with CAF than cloning or healing and fix it with CAF on layer 2
    5)  The healing brush and clone stamp now do not work.  I can see them, and the clone stamp continues to preview in the brush correctly, but when clicked nothing happens.
The only solution I've found is to save the image and restart CS5.

Okay, I duplicated your setup exactly with CS5 64 bit on Win 7 x64.  Background layer, copy of background layer, and transparent touch-up layer.
You are unclear about exactly how you're invoking the Content Aware Fill.
I went through exactly the steps you suggested, as evidenced by the following Photoshop Edit log excerpt.  I saw NO difficulties using the Clone tool in the last step.
Are you aware you can use the SPOT Healing Brush, in Content Aware mode, to do what you're doing on the transparent top layer (thereby avoiding the need to work on the background copy layer)?  It is able to deal with the image being on the lower layers.

The "Sample Field" letters are very dim.  After punching several times the right click revels "Clone stamp mode".  The next little circle has a line through it and after several right clicks, it says: "turn on to ignore adjustment layers when cloning,"  Despite this I cannot get any kind of a response to change any of the existing entries.  Bob

  • Trouble with the Clone Stamp/ Brush Sampling Layer

Hey guys! I've been having trouble with my clone stamp tool. Just installed the new PS CC and when I try to sample the layer that I want to clone, I hit "alt-click" and it gives the the error message telling me to do the very thing I just did? alt-click.  Doesn't work.  Same problem with the brush tool, except no error message, it just doesn't sample it. Can you help me figure out what the problem is? Thank you!

Update your graphics driver and/ or turn off OpenGL in the prefs and check for flakey color profiles.

  • Clone stamp replicates items not in the original sample

I'm using clone stamp.  In the attached image, I took a sample of the sky above the trees.  As I move the stamp around and click to paste the sample (to clone out dust spots, birds, etc.), other parts of the image get pasted as well.  For example, I'd wanted to copy only the blue sky I had originally selected to areas above the waterline and the trees, and the clone stamp actually pasted in pixels I hadn't originally selected!
This happens with other images as well, and on Windows as well as Mac.
Why is it doing that?  How can I stop it from happening?
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

First, thanks to both of you for taking time to help me with this.
Second, the Video Card information shows two entries:
Intel HD Graphics, type GPU, Built-In
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M, type GPU, PCIe
I can't figure out how to take a screen shot since the keys I have to press to take the shot interfere with the Alt-Click required in CS5.  However, I can describe it as follows, using a chessboard analogy:
When my sample is taken at square B1 and I paste the sample onto square C1, there is no problem.  However, as I move across the chessboard, to (say) E1 and F1, the data that is just over the edge in square A1 will be copied to the analogous place on square D1 and E1, even though A1 wasn't part of the sample.
The problem doesn't happen all the time, only after I've been working for a while.  For example, I just tried to replicate the effect I experienced in the photo I posted, but the clone stamp worked properly.

  • Clone stamp tool - can't turn 'aligned sample' option off

HI, I am experiencing a problem with the clone stamp tool and healing brush tool where I uncheck the 'aligned sample' optiom, 'alt' click where I want the sampling to come from, then brush over the area I want to be affected.  I have noticed that the results are the same as when the 'algned sample' option is on; the sampling is clearly following the brush just as when 'aligned sample' is checked.  I have reset the tool with no effect.  Anyone have a solution?
    Thanks

Just to clarify, the Aligned option will cause multiple brush strokes to copy from the sampled area as though you had duplicated the sampled layer, hidden it with a mask, and now revealing it. With Aligned off, each brush stroke returns to the sampled area. For example, if you have cloned from a layer with the image of a face, sampling in one of the eyes, multiple brush strokes with Aligned on will result in the face filling in stroke by stroke. With Aligned off, a new eye will be cloned with each brush stroke. And by brush stroke I mean clicking and releasing mouse button.
If this is the behavior you are expecting by not getting and resetting the tool did not fix things, then it is time to reset the application preferences:

  • Clone stamp tool won't apply

    Hello all,
I just moved to CC and I'm having trouble applying the clone stamp tool.
So, I create a duplicate unlocked layer and select my area to clone from using ALT.
When I hover over the area to place the clone it previews what it'll look like, but when I click the mouse it won't apply.
Any ideas folks? I'm on a MacPro late 2013 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5.
    Many thanks,

Selection active, Opacity too low, Flow too low, Blend Mode, …?

  • Clone Stamp sample color underneath

Having used PSE6 previously, I'm used to the clone stamp and selecting the area to be cloned, opacity % etc.  But in PSE 9 [trail] it overlays a darker layer [presumably from the sample area] so that I can't see how the affected area is changing as I go.
Is there a way to turn that off?

If your talking about the clone overlay, where it looks like one
image superimposed on another, try changing the options for
the clone overlay.  Click on the double square to the right of sample
all layers and set the options as below in the screenshot.

  • Clone Stamp Tool: won't work on layers

I'm a beginner, and cannot find the answer to this online. I've been trying to use the Clone Stamp Tool, but it only works on the background image, not on any layers. When I try to use it on layers, I press Alt and the target comes up, but then when I click to brush, it does not clone. It doesn't do anything at all. Any ideas on how I can get this to work? I don't want to edit the original image.

Set the Tool to "Current Layer" in the Options bar at the top.

  • Clone Stamp Acting Weird

Clone Stamp behaving oddly.  I Alt + Click to sample image and then click to paint.  When I do this, the cursor fills with the sampled image, which changes as I move the cursor to reflect the moving sample point, but the tool won't actually paint any pixels.  I click and drag, but the pixels don't change.  Usually when I use this tool, the cursor doesn't show a preview of the sampled image, so I don't know if that's another odd behavior or simply an option that I wasn't aware of which got activated inadvertently.
Has anyone else had this problem?  Can anyone explain it and/or offer a solution?  I've searched the forum, but the suggested solution (restetting the tool) hasn't worked and this issue has turned a quick and easy task into a headache which has consumed my entire morning.  My sincere thanks in advance for any assistance.

Your probably seeing the clone source overlay.
Go to Window>Clone Source and either uncheck Show Overlay
or just check clipped if you want the overlay to clip to the brush size.

Photoshop Elements 8.  "Could not use Clone Stamp Tool because of a program error."  Please help.

    Try this:
    Open your picture file
    Access the clone stamp tool
Hold down the ALT key on the keyboard and left click on the area from which you wish to clone, then release the ALT key, and click to place the pixels at the destination
    TIPS:
It is a good idea to open a blank layer at the top in the layers palette, and do the cloning on this layer. Be sure that "sample all layers" at the top is checked. You can change the layer opacity if necessary
Use the bracket keys next to the letter p on the keyboard to increase & decrease the size of the cursor

  • Clone Stamp not working in Elements 5

I have tried the trouble shooting sugestions on page 245 of Photoshop Elements 5, The Missing Manual by Barbara Brundage. However, I have been unable to get my clone stamp to work. Previously the clone stamp was working o.k.  Do you have any other suggestions that I might try?
Also, are there some good editing advantages/improvements by upgrading to Elements 7 ?

I held the keys down while starting the editor from the welcome screen and
got the box to delete the preferences. However I have not been able to get
the clone stamp to work. The delete preferences must have worked because my
brushes were changed back to the original setting. I normally use a
different setting to show the brushes as circles. I have been trying to
clone with the Size: 21 ps; Mode: Normal; Opacity: 100% and Aligned checked.
I have tried both checking and unchecking Aligned and Sample All Layers. I
tried a different photo but with the same results. When I Alt click to clone
I get a small circle with something similar to a plus sign in the circle.
The Edit shows an "Undo clone stamp" each time I Alt Click and try to clone
    but nothing was cloned.
This is the first time that I've encountered this problem.

  • How to make the TARGET of clone stamp 2 simultaneous layers?

Does anyone know how to make the TARGET of the clone stamp, multiple simultaneous layers? Or maybe more accurately, how to clone stamp the top layer and have the layer underneath doing the exact same cloning simultaneously. Or maybe a workaround? I've tried linking the layers, and multiple layer selection with no joy.
Here is what I'm trying to do. I'm duplicating a layer, then applying LucisArt to one of the layers to greatly exaggerate local contrast. Though I'm not using LucisArt as the final, I want to use it to assist in smoothing blotchy skies, banding, and finding hidden camera sensor dust spots.
I want to clone stamp on the LucisArt layer so I can watch my progress, but also have the underlying layer doing the exact clone stamping at the same time. Thanks ... Aaron

    Thanks everyone.
Dennis, You are correct. I know how to selectively apply the LucisArt filter, that's not what I'm looking for. I want my end result to have NO LucisArt effect at all. I'm trying to use the LucisArt layer to drastically exaggerate flaws such as camera sensor dust, AND I want to correct these flaws on the LucisArt layer where they are obvious. The LucisArt layer is only for reference. But the trick is to get CS3 to do to the non LucisArt layer, exactly what I did to the LucisArt layer.
So imagine I have this otherwise nice photo, but the photographer (this happened) had an amazingly dirty sensor. Half of the dust spots I can hardly see, but the client wants it super clean. So I duplicate the layer so I have two exactly the same. I then apply a strong LucisArt filter the top layer which reveals all the spots including many I couldn't see on the original layer. I'd like to fix all these spots with the clone stamp tool on the LucisArt layer where I can see them easily, then toss that layer. The original below would have all those spots fixed, but sampled from it's own layer and stamped to it's own layer.
As it is, I can click the LucisArt layer on, place my finger on the spot, then turn that layer off and hopefully see the spot and remove it from the layer underneath. Very tedious indeed.

Why do you use the Blend Modes Lighter and Darker at all in this case and not simply Normal?
And what kept you from posting a screenshot?
I borrowed the image below for an HDR workshop I ran at the 2010 PSNZ National Convention, to demonstrate a method of removing halos.  You'll remember that halos were a serious problem with early HDR, and while the halos in this image were caused by over sharpening, they are perfect for demonstrating this technique.
It relies on the fact that halos so often tend to put a lighter tone between the two areas where sharpening is being applied. Whether that is the sky abutting a dark line of hills, or the rock and little tower as in this image.  I've uploaded it at the size it was supplied to me at (about 2700 pixels wide).  So
Click to open the full image, right click and copy, and paste into Photoshop.
Select the clone tool, and set its blend mode to Darken.
Try to sample on a line horizontal to where you want to clone, to give the best tonal match, and start cloning.
Because the sky is darker than the halo, it overwrites it. But the rock is darker than the sky, so it has no affect.
It works even better if you clone on a new layer also set to Darken.  No masking, just Photoshop blend mode magic.
You can also fix the little tower. Use a great big brush — just remember to sample horizontal to match the horizon.
Back then I was using the same trick with CAs after forgetting to fix them in ACR, and having done too much work to start again after spotting the problem.
