Clone suncluster 3.0...is it possible?

Hi,
I have two cluster environments: prod and preprod.
both are dual node clusters with identical server and storage h/w (e420s and A5200s).
volume manager in use is vxvm.
my question is how can i clone prod cluster on to preprod boxes and have two exactly identical cluster environments.
I am using flash archives to restore cluster nodes. all works fine until i try to boot in to cluster.
any body have experience on changing cluster identification files? ie. to correct references to old node names and such.
thanks in advance.

See the Sun Cluster installation docs which discuss setting up a JumpStart server
for Sun Cluster clients. This is a common and recommended practice.
Flash doesn't really know anything about Sun Cluster, so it will just copy over the files.
The problem is that the Sun Cluster configuration database knows intimate details
of the cluster members (eg. nodename, IP addresses, etc) which is important
for running the cluster. Since Flash effectively erases the nodename and IP addresses,
it gets out of sync with the cluster configuration database.
What does work is flashing a cluster before you run scinstall. In other words,
before the cluster configuration database is created. This approach is not
perfect, but can save a lot of time over a regular JumpStart, especially if you
add patches during or after the JumpStart. I've used this many times and it
works quite well.

  • Is it safe to backup clone...

...if I've just had problems with the native drive? Could any problems carry over to the clone?
I booted from the clone, ran Disk Utility, and got the drive working again. I was about to perform my regular backup...but should I? Is it safe?

...if I've just had problems with the native drive? Could any problems carry over to the clone?
Yes, since the clone is basically a copy of the first drive. They would either get carried over (if you did a block by block copy) or they would be reflected in the clone if the directory was messed up on the first drive and the files were messed up as a result.
I booted from the clone, ran Disk Utility, and got the drive working again. I was about to perform my regular backup...but should I? Is it safe?
When backing up I boot from my clone, verify the main drive, then boot from the main drive and clone it over since I am now assured (as much as possible) that it is in good condition for cloning. In theory you should have multiple copies of backups of different ages (a la Time Machine) but I don't know many people who own that many drives.
The quandry comes when your main drive does need repairing. There does exist the possibility that repairing a drive may make it worse. Ideally then you don't want to mess up your existing good but dated backup before you are certain the repair has succeeded. You then need a second spare drive so you can clone the main drive with its possible errors so if something does go wrong with the main drive while repairing you at least have a copy of the files as they currently exist, then try to reconcile those files with the previous ones. Maybe this isn't terribly clear, but hopefully you see what I mean. I don't know of many who actually do it that way though. I've only had minor errors on my drive once and I just crossed my fingers and went ahead and repaired it - successfully.

  • External Hard Drive and Back Ups..

I've been searching the net and getting myself more confused with each website I find. Since I've had great luck with the folks on these forums I figured that I'd try my luck again...here goes...
I thought backing up my MacBook Pro would be easy...get and external drive one half the size of my current hard drive and let Time Machine do the rest. But then I got all twisted trying to decide between external drives, online back up services, etc.
    1. Some folks recommend taking video, photo, iTunes files, etc. and keeping them EXCLUSIVELY on an external drive just to keep the computer from running slowly. Problem is...if I do that...there's only ONE copy of those files. Drive fails...bye bye.
    2. And what about the system itself? If my comp goes down and I have to reboot the whole system or a new computer...does the external have my system files on it? Some folks recommend having a clone drive all by itself?
    3. HOW MANY DRIVES AM I SUPPOSED TO HAVE?!?
Basically I'm a paramedic and emergency services educator and I'm always on the move. I also work overseas a lot and am always downloading medical videos, podcasts, photos, e-books, etc. for educational purposes. I don't want my computer to get slow but I have to make sure every thing is copied...one original...and one copy.
Sorry if I sound like I'm technologically illiterate but I could really use a hand here. The more I look...the more confused I get.
Thanks in advance for you time fellas...
    -John-

There are many philosophies on backing up, and you will get many opinions.
For safety, it is good to have at least 2 separate drives for backup, so that you have your information on more than one drive. One of these drives could be a portable drive that goes with you everywhere. The other could be a large desktop drive that stays home when you travel, or it could be a second portable drive. I travel a lot myself, and what I have is two portable firewire drives. One goes everywhere with me, and the other stays at home in a fire proof safe. This is so that if the worst happens and my Mac and external drive are stolen or destroyed, most of my data will be safe at home. So if it it feasible, it would be good to have one complete copy of your stuff in a separate location so it would always be safe.
What might be simplest would be for you to have a large enough internal drive to accommodate all your stuff if possible. You will need to keep 15% to 20% of your internal drive free for optimum performance of the OS. As long as you do that, you should not experience the slowness that comes when a drive is too full.
If you want to create a bootable clone for a backup, you will need an external drive--or a partition of an external drive--that is the same size as your internal drive. If you want to have a Time Machine backup, you will need an external drive--or a partition-- that is much larger than your internal drive. I'm not sure that a Time Machine backup would be the best thing for you to have. For one thing, it it's not bootable.
If all your stuff will not fit on your internal drive, then you will need a drive--or a partition of a drive--that is dedicated to that data.
I would recommend that you look at these two cloning utilities:
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
You can download either one and run it as much as you like for free. If you want to unlock Super Duper's more useful features such as Smart Update, you can register a copy for $28. CCC is donation ware.
I use Super Duper myself, so I can say that it is very easy to use. I am not as familiar with CCC, but I have heard good things about it.
What I would recommend is 2 external FireWire drives, each larger than your internal drive. A good source would be OWC, where you can select a bare drive and put it in OWC's excellent Mercury on the Go FireWire 800 enclosure. USB would work, but FireWire 800 would be much faster.
You can partition these drives. One partition on each would be the same size as your internal drive, and this partition would be used to create a bootable clone of your internal drive. That means that if your internal drive were to die, you would be able to boot from the external and keep on working. You would of course keep both of these external clones as up to date as possible.
The second partition would be for any data that would not fit on your internal drive--say if you find your internal drive is getting too full, and you need to move some videos off onto the external to create more space on the internal. If you did that, you could clone the second partition of that drive to the second partition of your other external drive, so that you would have 2 copies, one on each external drive.
It's hard to give complete advice not knowing the size of your internal drive or about how many GB's of videos and stuff that you need. If there is going to be a huge amount of videos, you may need separate drives for them rather than partitions.
Hope this will help. If you could post back with the size of your internal drive and the approximate size of your videos etc, it would be easier to make specific recommendations.
    Good luck!

  • I just bought an external hard drive. What files should I back up?

I just bought a 60gig external hard drive and I wanted to know what files should I back up?

The easiest is to drag /Users/<yourhomefoldername> to the backup drive.
Only the files you've created can't be replaced. The rest is on CDs, DVDs, or can be purchased again if need be.
I don't bother with clones because there's always the possibility of trouble down the line if you have to restore from one. (Something could be wrong with the clone, or it could be altered if you have to boot from it.) Why take the chance, when the OS and apps are expendable? And, if you don't test that the clone is good (by restoring to a blank drive), you're just fooling yourself as to its viability.
If the internal drive dies, you take the time to install a new one, load up OS and applications, then copy your home folder back. So your computer will be unusable for a half-day---big deal. This doesn't happen every day.
The main thing is that you've backed up your home folder.

  • Will upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard delete programs?

Sorry if this is a stupid question or answered a million times before, but will upgrading from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard stop my existing programs (PhotoShop, Office etc) from running? I've got an Intel MacBook but I've never installed a new OS myself, so any tips gratefully received! Thank you.

You will lose the ability to work in any Classic OS applications that ran under system 9.
If I were you, before upgrading do yourself a favor and purchase an external hard drive that you can "clone" your Mac to. If possible, a large enough drive that you can have 2 partitions. In one you would clone your current system and apps. Then after the upgrade, clone again your updated system to the other partition as a emergency backup.
With the clone of your current set up, if need be you can rebbot to it so that you can use any of your "old" applications.

  • CCC vs SuperDuper on MacBook Pro

I haven't been an OS X user long enough to have developed preferences for imaging software. I used CCC on my iBooks and have been using it on my MBP until today. Today I found the universal binary for SuperDuper and decided to try it to clone my MBP harddrive. CCC remains Rosetta translated while SuperDuper is now UB. I expected SD to be faster; it wasn't. In fact, SuperDuper took twice as long to clone my MBP HD as the Rosetta translated CCC. Despite that, I was impressed by the range of options available in the paid version of SuperDuper. The "free versions" are pretty equivalent in functionality. Are there any of you out there that have real world experience with both of these programs to help me decide which one, in the end, will come through consistently and reliably when I need it? If speed were the only issue, I'd stick with CCC, but with the possibility of incremental clones, SD seems like a good possibility.
What thinketh you from your own personal experiences.
P.S. the price difference is immaterial to me.

SuperDuper is very well supported and does incremental imaging which is a huge time saver and I believe is unique among Macintosh imaging programs. I have been using it for almost 2 years as I needed to find a very reliable imaging program as I was using Ghost and then Acronis on the PC. It is the sole program that I found that is feature complete with Ghost and Acronis TrueImage. It also does scheduled imaging. The product gets upgraded regularly and the developer is very responsive. They also have an online forum that is attended by the developer. It has saved my butt on more than one occasion. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

  • New 64bit installation based on existing x86 system

    Hello there!
I'm using a x86 Arch, and my hard disk is partitioned as follow:
    sda1 root
    sda7 home
    sda6 oth
Where "oth" is a partition empy.
I would like to "clone" my actual system to a new 64bit one.
So, I can boot arch-dual-dvd in 64bit mode, install the new arch in sda6 then use it as new root.
I am writing this to ask you whether is possible to "clone" my system as much as possible: installing the same packages, keeping the configuration files ( /etc/ ? ), don't touch the home and re-use in the new system..
Any hint will be REALLY appreciated!
    M

There's no any easier way that what you have already described however I tend to daisy chain my x86_64 and i686 so that I can chroot the i686 under x86_64 and then I have access to 32-bit chroot, (not that I use it all that much).   But then you can also make a slight change to your i686 kernel and make it available (with some other installed services), a PXE bootable image for some other device you have laying around.

  • Move to Aperture with Photoshop edited images?

There was just a new thread which asked about iPhoto edited images being moved to Aperture. Didn't want to be accused of hijacking a thread by asking an elaboration in that thread, so here's a new one.
A further question that thread brings up:
I too have edited images. (Very few are in iPhoto).
I do have way too many edited images that have little clones, in various states of edit & possibly recropped in Photoshop, as well. Saved as various resolutions of *.png or *.jpg or *.psd. It appears daunting to move all those in a coherent way.
Is there a way to handle a move to Aperture that reduces the pain of such a messy state?

In Aperture you have two different flavors of organizing structures:
Containers (projects and folders): In the projects you store your images, and the folders help to group them hierarchically for easy access, see Kirby Krieger's essay: Re: Organizing in Aperture, concise long version:
Output structures: Album, smart albums, slide shows, books, webpages, ...: The output structure does not actually store the images, but references them for specific uses and describes relations between images, bases on properties of the images, like keywords, captions, and other tags.
What you need to do, when designing your own library structure, is to clearly seperate the aspects - storage and use:
The storage structure should be simple, but consistant - I am a follower of Kirby's maxime: "one shoot - one project" - just like in the old times of rolls of film - one box per film roll. As to the allocation of folders to contain your projects, there are different approaches; you may go for a chronological scheme How do you structure you library? or group by categories, anything is fine, as long as it isn't to involved, straight forward, and easy to maintain.
The output structure should be flexible; you will find that you will frequently adapt it to the project at hand. Since the ouput structure heavily relies on the tags and keywords, you should invest some effort into define import presets, to get most of your tagging done automatically on import.
Thus said, back to the problem at hand:
Looking: If I use "Stacks," I can group/clump them together. That's a pretty good use for stacks, especially if judiciously assembled into a project container.
I recommend against using stacks for long-term structuring. Stacks are somewhat weird, transient creatures between storage and output structures: they don't fit completely into one of the above categories. They are used by Aperture as storage stucture on import, but their use is restricted - you cannot move single  images contained in a stack to another project (all images in the stack will move together), and special rules apply if you use stacked images in books and slide shows. Also you will need stacks for other uses, and you will want to be able to stack your images according to other criteria. It easy to unstack all images by mistake - happens to me all the time - then your storage structure will be broken.
I suggest to group related images by filename on import - using a custom import preset for filenames. That way your structure will be persistent not as fragile as when based on stacks.

    Léonie

  • What do I need first?

I pre-ordered a copy of The Sims 3, which arrived today. I quickly found that I need 10.5.7 (Leopard to run the game.
    My machine:
    iMac
    Mac OS X Version 10.4.11
2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 Gb 667 MHz DDR2 RAM
    Graphics Card: ATI Radeon X2600.
As far as I'm aware, I meet all requirements except for the fact that I need 10.5.7 (Leopard).
If this is the case, could someone tell me exactly where I need to go and if there's more than one update, then what sequence I need to install them in? I'm aware I can't just jump in and install 10.5.7 - I have to get the updates leading up to it first right?
    Any help is appreciated.
(Apologies if this isn't the correct board to have posted this topic, though technically it is related to Leopard installtion)

    Hi Centauri;
No. There are no update available that will get you from 10.4.11 to 10.5.anything. You must buy a Leopard DVD which is what is needed to get you system over the Leopard.
Before you do that I would suggest that you clone your system disk and test the clone to be sure it is possible to boot from it. This is a precaution just in case something goes awry during the Upgrade.

  • Planning File Entries in BOP

    Hi Everyone,
    1. Is BOP flag in Planning File used with only SAPNETCHANGE filter type?
    2. Other filter types (including Z  ones), do they include product in BOP even if BOP flag is not set in Planning File?
    3. Is it possible to  create a Z filter type with Netchange option?
    Regards,
    Sima

    Sima,
I did a little more digging after seeing expert Bala's response.  I found the SAP_NETCHANGE filter hiding in the configuration tables.  It is not directly visible in configuration, because SAP has set it to be unalterable through configuration. (see note http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/635411 )
Although this filter cannot be altered, it seems logical that an experienced (and patient) developer could create a 'clone' filter type that worked in a way that satisfied your business requirements.  The SAP filter evidently calls a special program /SAPAPO/BOP_FILTER_NETCHG; which I speculate could be copied and modified to be the engine for your clone.  I hasten to add that I have never done this, nor do I know anyone who has.
I personally would be reluctant to create such a clone, unless there was no other possible way to manage the business requirements. Many custom developments are expensive to create and maintain.  Caveat Emptor!
    Best Regards,

sounds like a general OS X issue with your system, drive, or something else though.
Booted from your OS X DVD or another hard drive and done Disk Utility Repair disk?
Have backup of your system you can boot from? TimeMachine for your data?
A  drive that you can install OS X to (100GB) just for the system to use?
    How to clone your system:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-HowToClone-backup.html
    http://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-HowToClone.html
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/7032/carbon-copy-cloner
That will make a bootable clone of your system.
Also might want to be using timeMachine but I value clone as first and it is possible to partition a drive and have both if need be even a small emergency system so you could end up with:
    Emergency OS X 20GB
Clone OS X working system (200GB?)
    Lion Recovery partition 1GB
TimeMachine 3.5X the size of your data perhaps
Disk utility has RESTORE which will also clone your system but not the Lion Recovery partition. Oddly  Apple did not 'endorse' making bootable clone of the system which works too but most choose Carbon Copy Cloner - it works more consistently; it allows for smart update of the backup volume. Both can backup to a sparse disk image if desired.

  • Photoshop CS + Nikon NX crashed

Hey i have a strange problem with Photoshop CS and the new trial version of Nikon NX. Both programs have a file browser to easily get access to your pictures. Here starts my problem if i start the browser in nikon nx and ps cs and the browser scan the directory for pictures it will crash completely.
I deactivated the application enhancer from unsanity but no effect - they crashed.
    Could it be quicktime.
They crash only when i start the file browser. Without starting the file browser all work fine and smooth.
    Any suggestions?
    greetings and thanks from germany.
    tobi

    Wow several mistakes.
1: Photoshop CS - CS2 is much better performing if you have a 64 bit Mac G5, Tiger and a nice amount of RAM, no scratch disk hardly needed. Work in RAM. I believe this program (and CS2) require a admin password to install things a little deeper in your OS than what is comfortable in my eyes, but it's Adobe and if you need their software I guess you have to trust them mucking around right where Apple changes things all the time.
2: Trial version of Nikon NX, says it all right there. They are most likely using you as a beta tester. Camera companies in my opinion should stick to making hardware and not software.
3: Application Enhancer (APE) from Unsanity - otherwise known as a "haxie" framework, it supposedly injects it's code in your running applications and violates the bountries of protected memory to do what it the haxie does. Also since anyone can write a haxie module for the APE framework, it's possible to open your machine up to a world of trouble by downloading a malicious haxie. I like some of Unsanity products, and used them from time to time, but taking the chance all the time isn't worth it in my opinion. Especially since conflicts like yours occurs and Apple goes and changes things on the OS level all the time.
So outside of CS, which should work fine, your running a rickety system with "grey area" and trial software.
I know its easy to download and install all sorts of fun and useful stuff off the internet, but you have to exercise a bit more judgement and take stability into play.
1: Avoid as much installers that require a admin password as possible. Developers seem to love to get their hands deep in our OS and the problem with that is there is a big player in that space, Apple. So the more cooks in the kitchen, the more conflicts arise. Not to mention security and privacy issues. Can you read code? Do you really know how your OS is being altered, secret processes calling out over the internet? Little Snitch being bypassed?
2: Keep as much things running in user space as possible. This way if a app crashes, it just crashes and the memory space dumped. If something installed in root space crashes or gets exploited, then your whole machine, all your passwords, all your secured files, everything, could be gone.
So what I suggest is for you to do is get yourself a external Firewire 800/400 drive equal or slightly bigger than your current boot drive.
C boot off the Tiger install disk and select Disk Utility from the menu, Erase W/Zero this new drive. It will take time to check every bit to make sure there are no bad sectors.
Install Tiger on this new drive (with iLife '06) and set it as your Startup Drive, reboot and go through the setup using your same user name as the old boot drive. Do not use migration assistant because your apps are copy protected and it copies blindly, so you just get old garbage again.
Immediately hit Software Update until clear. Install CS (or CS2) from original cd's and update. Install other reliable apps from original sources.
Now take your time and cherry pick stuff off the old boot drive. Replace your iTunes folder into the same exact location (pathname) on the new boot drive as your old boot drive. Now rename your old boot to something else and the new boot to the name of the old boot name. This will preserve the pathnames for your playlists in iTunes XML file.
Replace your User/Library/Mail and User/Library/Safari folders. Copy your files over. Clean house of stuff you don't want anymore.
Now run like that for some time to make sure you got everything off the old boot drive. Once your satisfied Erase w/Zero the old boot drive.
Now get yourself a free copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and clone your external boot drive over to your internal drive.
1: Always Erase w/Zero all new drives one time. That's all that drive will need is once. Regular Erase will do after that. Use HFS+ Journaled for the formating.
2: Always repair permissions in Disk utility before a clone.
3: Enable "make bootable" in CCC preferences.
4: Don't do anything else, run anything else, while a cloning is in progress. It can take up to a hour or more depending on the drive size.
5: Repair permissions after a clone.
6: Hold option and boot from the clone to check it out very carefully, make sure everything works as expected. Some copy protected programs may require reactivation as their files get moved around.
7: Search Apple main page for OnyX and run all "Automation" followed by a reboot. It will clean things up and reset the System Prebinding.
8: Look on the CCC forums for any latest tips. "Before you clone"
9: Clone your boot drive before a OS update, or if you plan to try out software. This way you have a fall back method.
10: Keep it a whole boot drive to drive clone, don't go for the "partial clones" like other software does because of hidden copy protected files. Don't clone to a partition, especially on the same drive. Because if the drive fails mechanically or gets exploited, then you lose everything.
11: If you can keep two clones disconnected and time spaced. If you got a problem with your main drive and hook up the clone to check it out. The clone could also get exploited, quite possibly not right away. once you do find out then c boot off the Tiger installer disk (write protected) and Erase w/Zero all contaminated drives. Disconnect from the network/internet before reverse cloning (2x) off that last clone. Disconnect your last clone before going online and messing around again.
So now you should have a fresh clean system, free of "issues". If you want to try something, it's fine go ahead and clone first before experimenting.
If your boot drive has issues, simply option boot off the clone and repair/recover or simply reverse clone and that's that. Since it's usually the last thing you did that caused the problem, it's nice to be able to "rewind" a little and avoid that problem software.
Now Windows supposely has something this "rewind" feature already built into the OS. Apple could take a lesson and build a cloning and recovery feature into the next version of the OS if someone has another drive to do it with.
If your looking for something more automated in regards to cloning, I can suggest a System Preference pane called "DeJaVu" which will do things auto-magically even when your logged out.

  • Cannot unmount disks

    Hi:
I have been reading the post here in the Mac Pro forum for about six months and this is my first answer (and my first problem with my MP)
In short, the problem I am having is that Carbon Copy Cloner, wich I have been using for cloning my start up disk to a second internal HD without any problem since I bought my MP, has stopped doing so. The message “can not unmount disk“ shows up. Can not unmount in Disk Utility neither. So, I can not clone my disk as my normal security routine. Rebuilding start up disk´s directory (wich I do before every week clone) with DW4 is not longer possible, nor even booting from DW4 cd. This started happennig after my first system freeze and the installation of a 3rd HD in bay 3 (the same day and in that order) After freeze I repaired with Maintenance, then I installed the HD.
Any help will be very, very wellcome.
(and excuse for my english, guys.)

    Hi The Hatter:
I do appreciate very much your help in this matter. I have learned a lot reading your answers to another peolpe´s questions.
    To the point:
MAINTENANCE is a system maintenance and cleaning app. I switched to it from ONYX. Take a look at it at:
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/maintenance.html
I am sure you know well this app, but maybe I wrote its name in a funny way. I do my cleaning tasks with MAIN MENU as well. Wich one is the best, in your opinion?
I do boot from my clone disk every week. From it I repair the directory of my “main“ disk. Then I restart and boot from my “main“ disk and clone it (using CCC) to my Back Up HD. I do reuild the directoy before cloning following a recommendation I found in Bombich´s forums. This is about not to cloning a already “deffective“ system. When this problem appeared I booted from DW cd as a last option procedure.
You are right!!! I would be doing better with a Emergency Partition. I have been lazy on this point.
Until now, I thought that running maintenance scripts and cleaning with MAINTENANCE (or ONYX) and rebuilding directory before cloning to another HD would keep me safe.
Know I believe that to be safe the best I can do is not to have a computer and move to a deep, fresh and green forest.
So. Wich is your maintenance and back up procedure, Hatter? I am stilI learning and am sure that it would be a good thing to know how do you keep your machine safe.
(But think about the forest, Hatter... Think about it...)
