Clone tool causing Aperture to freeze...

Has anyone else experienced Aperture 'freezing' when trying to use the clone tool on anything (it seems) other than a black background? When I try to erase extraneous background 'stuff' by cloning a black area, it works fine. But when I try to, say, clone an area of color in order to erase a black background, Aperture freezes (and stays that way until I force quit) for as long as twenty minutes, sometimes.
Am I missing a setting somewhere...?

I appreciate your response very much, but I have a hard time believing it is hardware or OS related, for many reasons...
1) It only happens when I am using the clone tool in a specific circumstance, and not across the board generally.
2) It doesn't happen when I use the other side of the clone tool, the repair tool, of which the only difference is a radio button and software; they're both in the same control window.
3) Something I neglected to mention in my first post was the behavior of the clone tool, when cloning a black background, accepting the first adjustment, but then claiming for the second adjustment that I hadn't option-clicked to define the point of cloning. It seems to happen every time I do this specific operation. All other adjustments, within that specific use of the clone tool, work as advertised; the second adjustment is the only one that can't remember what I selected for the first one.
4) SInce my first post, Aperture has begun to behave quite weirdly indeed. I have some pictures of a predominately pink-ish hue, that in making adjustments, all is well until I get to noise reduction. Then, upon adding noise reduction, the preview looks great but the browser view looks like a photo negative and the version export is a photo negative. It was only through investigation that I discovered what the offending adjustment was. So FAR, it has only happened to a few pictures, and others of the same predominate hue adjusted normally.
I don't understand what is going on, but it is disturbing, and I am becoming rather upset.
These problems are a relatively new occurrence, within the last week or so, and I can't have my editor of choice starting to go south on me, as I'm in the middle of a large batch of editing.
Has anyone else experienced these types of problems...?

  • Dust bunnies on the cam sensor. Can't find a Clone Tool in Aperture....??

My Canon 5D takes incredible shots, but I often have to deal with some "Dust Bunnies", when shooting in very arid/windy locations. I can not locate a tool in Aperture that allows me to clone these out. Does a Clone tool exist?

Yes, the spot is too uniform and both spot and patch are very hard edged ... have to work the softness and radius to get a reasonable result. BTW, too many spot/patches really make Aperture crawl and give the JPG export version the heabie jeabies (blank areas of the image apart from the patches)on my Quad.

  • Cloning stamp tool causes ae to freeze

I have just begun a project in AE CS4 where I am using the cloning tool for the first time.  I have used this tool extensively in Photoshop with no problems.  But in AE the program freezes for no apparent reason.  I can be using the stamp for the first time or the 50th time.  There's no logical sequence of events that leads to a freeze.  Sometimes I can recover without completely closing out by going to the Task Manager, but again there is no consistancy as to when it will recover and when it will freeze.  While the tool is working, it is performing just fine.
I have just upgraded to Win7 Premium, so I have no history with this tool in earlier versions.  I have an ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT graphics card with 512mb vram.  My system has 4gb of memory.  All of my drivers are updated and I performed a clean install of Win7.
One other thing I noticed when I began using Task Manager to try to recover is that while there is only one instance of Adobe After Effects listing under Applications, there are usually 5 instances of "AfterEffects.exe *32" listed under the Processes.  Four instances in this project show a usage of 163mb and one shows 287mb.  This last one is the only one that ever indicates any activity under the CPU column.  Is this correct?
Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks - Bob

    I've had a similar problem.
I encountered it on an iMac, stats look like this:
    2.8GHz Intel Quad-Core i7
    8GB DDR3
    ATI Radeon HD 4850 512Mb
    etc,etc.
Mine would crash a 42 frames in, then if I started a new comp from within the project it would freeze every 15 frames.
I was very mad about it. I'll try the updates and see if it still happens.

  • Cropping images, then moving to the next image causes Aperture to freeze

Title says it all. Every time. Getting really tired of this.

Let me preface by saying that I do not use Referenced Masters, and have not with any regularity. But on those images that I have needed to manually rotate images, and certainly with cropping, using the New Version from Master proves the master has not been rotated, and has not been cropped. Thus it is the data set of commands, as one would suspect, that has had any impact of the commands themselves. So it would not appear to me to be necessary to be in connection with the disk with the Referenced Masters. I don't know how intensive the processing is when you reconnect to the masters after the changes made via the Previews.
I think your finding casts suspicion on the external disk, or at least the connection to it. Did you complete a test of exporting some portion of your Library as a New Library, and trying these command steps as the New User?

After using the clone tool my keyboard freezes up. Why?
When I use the clone tool repeadedly i can no loger use my keyboard.
And that includes use for other applications.
I have to do everything manually by scrolling down the menu bars.
Also, I can't even type in any characters from the keyboard.
    Thanks everyone smarter than I.

    Thanks C,

I followed your instructions and reset my preferences.
    Crossing my fingers.
On another topic. I am running Design CS 5.5
But when I checked "about Photoshop it only reads CS5 12.1 x64.
    Also, my prefs read CS5.1
    Please advise.
I also seem to have prefs I may not need. I thought when I installed 5.5 my

  • Using Clone tool in Photoshop CS causes F9 to randomly activate

I'm not sure if this is a Photoshop problem or an OSX problem. I have posted on the Adobe site, but there was only one response and that didn't tell me much. And then I thought: it might actually be an OSX problem.
When using the clone tool in Photoshop CS, after an hour or so, under circumstances that I have not been able to replicate, PS starts to activate F9 on a continuing basis. Sometimes only once (all open windows appear separated); sometimes twice in quick succession; sometimes three or four times. The effect is exactly the same as pressing F9 1, 2, 3 or 4 times every couple of minutes.
I get around the problem by shutting all other windows (then the PS window I'm working in doesn't get changed - I just click on it to bring it back if it has been F9ed); or if the F9s get too annoying I shut down PS and start again.
Is this activation of F9 likely to be:
    * a PS bug (somehow it is activating F9)?; or
    * an OSX bug (PS does something and OSX triggers F9)?
I have not had the problem occur anytime except cloning in PS. I doubt it has anything to do with Expose (as the PS poster thought) because I do not use Expose.
The problem appears to me to be almost random. It might be in my particular setup, but I suspect that PS and/or OSX are going slightly haywire in a very esoteric way under certain vague circumstances. How's that for a non-specific description of the behaviour

This is an issue seen from time to time with Photoshop.  The Photoshop team has said they're going to take another look at it, over on the Photoshop bugfix / feature request forum (http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/_adobe_community_help_keeps_popping_ open).
Not everyone sees this, so take heart, it can work well.
One source of random corruption seen with Photoshop can be from buggy display drivers.  OpenGL implementations in display drivers are changing to this very minute.
You can try disabling OpenGL Drawing  for a while, do some editing and watch to see if it still happens.  You'd do this via Edit - Preference - Performance, and remember to restart Photoshop after making the change and before testing.
Or you can visit the web site of the maker of your video card and download/install their latest drivers.  I recommend this, no matter what else you do.

  • LR 3.2 - Local adjustment brush and heal/clone tool broken

    Hi,
After installing LR 3.2, the first thing I noticed is that it is much slower than the previous version (using XP Pro + 3GB memory and a speedy processor).
But the most terrible novelty of this version is that the Adjustment Brush is going berserk after a while:
It first slows down to a crawl, so slow that it's almost impossible to work with.
While working with it after a while, it starts to show random rectangular areas that are copies of other areas of the image that have nothing to do with the area I'm working on. This happens after a brush stroke. The Undo command makes these rectangular "patches" disappear.
From time to time, the whole image is flipped upside down (You can't believe it? Neither could I).
Eventually, afte a brush stroke, the sandclock mouse cursor is displayed and the program freezes (at this time it can be using over 1 GB of memory although I'm working on a single, standard EOS 5D image). The only way to stop this madness is to kill the process.
The Heal/Clone tool also shows a similar misbehavior.
I didn't have these problems with the previous version.

Are you looking for help? If so then it would really useful if you provided some information on hardware, OS and what exactly are you doing when the system freezes. Also worth noting that applications very rarely (even badly coded apps) cause the hardware to crash. System crashes are more often than not due to bad device drivers or bad hardware that an application may expose.
I'm a software professional since PCs exist. I have enough experience to identify software problems when they appear. At least, I'm able to determine whether I have a hardware problem or if the software I'm using (or writing) is buggy. I have read many reports, many threads, many advice about these performance issues. I'm pretty sure that the problem is LR. I repeat: I do not have any performance issue when editing images in Bibble 5, Photoshop or DxO Optics Pro. BB5 is at least an order of magnitude faster than LR when editing images. When I use the Adjustment Brush in Camera Raw, there's absolutely no problem. My hardware is powerful enough and my installation is pretty clean (could it be powerful enough in Camera Raw and not in LR?). My OS is very stable. I have not seen a BSOD since years and all my applications are running flawlessly on this system (which includes image editing applications, software development tools, and many others...).
Users having various and very powerful systems (PC or Mac) are reporting the very same problems. Like Bruce, I'm convinced that this is not a hardware resource problem. We didn't have these problems with LR2 and LR3 was supposed to enhance performances. Version after version, it has now become unusable for me.
Drawing the conclusion that since many users don't have any performance issues, the problem must be on the user's side would be erroneous. The bug is in LR and may or may not appear depending on the circumstances. Any developer knows that a bug may or may not hit a given user depending on how she uses the software. I admit that these bugs are hard to fix. But LR has to be fixed, no doubt.
I profoundly regret that Adobe do not acknowledge this.

  • Retouch Tool in Aperture 2 producing a negative image

Both the repair and clone tools, when applied to scans of B&W prints in TIFF format from a flatbed scanner, are turning my positive B&W image into a negative image. The transition occurs when the adjustment "takes." The only way to get my version back to positive is to CTRL-Z and undo the adjustment. No problem with scans of color images scanned in color but with the color removed via the Monochrome Mixer.
Can't find anyone in the archives with this problem. Any ideas?
I'm running Aperture 2 under Leopard with both fully updated.
    Terry

    Select the red eye tool.
It is usually good to zoom into 100% - use the Z key.
Adjust the radius slider to only the size of the red-eye you want to remove - maybe a little tiny bit bigger.
Click on the eye - it should leave a yellow circle bullseye thing over the eye that you can see or adjust when the red eye tool is selected.
    Repeat.

  • Selection tool in aperture

Does anyone know of a selection/cutting tool in aperture? Similar to the Lasso tool in PS? Cheers.

    Sorry, no,
With the lasso tool in PS you select arbitrarily shaped regions and modify them or copy them to the clipboard. This not possible in Aperture - Arperture does not support compositing of images, only adjusting, but that in a very direct way.
You can select to crop a image
and you can apply adjustments locally to regions based on luminance (highlights, shadows, midtones) or on masks defined by the path of the brush strokes.
You can clone arbitrary shapes from one region of the image to another part of the same image using the clone-brush.
To copy adjustments between images use "Lift&Stamp".
    Cheers

  • Clone tool broken for large images

The clone tool from the retouch brick hangs Aperture 3 every time when applied to large images.
By large I mean .tiff files that exceed a 100MB or so. When adding strokes with the clone brush, at some point the thumbnail processing hangs and the browser thumbnail turns black with some garbled pixels along the upper edge. The processing wheel will turn forever while updating 2 thumbnails. No progress is made and no CPU time is used.
Deleting brush strokes will bring Aperture to life again.
There seems to be a relation between the size of the image file and the number of clone strokes allowed. At 1GB just one stroke will do it.
Somehow it looks like a different incarnation of the "maroon screen" i.e. "unsupported image format" bug from version 2.

Yep, seeing that here too, with my large TIFF files scanned from Mamiya 645 slides.

  • Rx for Slow Clone Tool in CS4

Until Adobe can fix CS4s slow screen redraw, you have 3 options for speeding up the slow clone tool. 1-Go into the clone palette box by clicking on the stamp icon at the right side of the main menu bar. Uncheck Show Overlay. That alone will make a huge difference. 2-The more square inches the tool covers on your monitor, the slower it gets. Try to use the smallest brush [in terms of absolute area covered] as possible. But note: zooming in is not the cure. This applies to the brush tool also. 3-If CS4 is an upgrade, quit CS4 and open your previous version of Photoshop if you must use these larger tools extensively. But of course, when you can use smaller tools, and so you can rotate the canvas, reopen CS4. To paraphrase item-1: it is not the brush size that causes the lag but rather it is the amount of area on your screen being covered by that brush, no matter its size. The smallest brush will lag if your zoom is 3200%.

Wonderful!! Thank you very much, it was causing me much frustration!

  • Image editing selection tools in Aperture 2?

Are there any image editing selection tools in Aperture 2 (Magic Wand, selection box etc.)? If not, you can't make any corrections without effecting the whole picture. I guess that would just send you back to Photoshop or Elements for image editing, and then you might as well stay in the Adobe world.

This isn't what Aperture is designed for. The features you are asking about are not really photographic in nature - they are image manipulations that go beyond what Aperture is designed to do.
Think of Aperture more as a catalog that allows photographers to make the vast majority of adjustments they need to make to single images (contrast, exposure, white balance, dust spots, minor clone/patching, etc.). It also provides strong keywording and search capabilities.
Folks who need to do advanced image manipulations/compositing etc. will have to do it in PhotoShop, but they will lose the "library" functions found in Aperture. Lightroom is the same way - you have to export your pic's to PhotoShop to do serious editing/layers, etc.

  • Strange Effects When Using Erase & Clone Tools In CS4

I recently upgraded from Elements 8 to CS4 and I've noticed that I have started getting strange effects with both the erase and clone tools. When I have been working with either of these tools for a while I suddenly find that left clicking the mous will cause a spurious reaction in another part of my image. The erase tool erases strips and the clone tool clones other colours and areas. I suspect that it might be due to the amount of memory I'm using but advice would be appreciated. I am running Windows 7 and  I have 4.00GB of physical memory and 11.8GB of virtual memory.
    Looking forward to suggestions.
    Ward1941UK

I've found the solution to the problem, although it doesn't really please me because I've had to sacrifice the number of history states I can keep. I have reduced the number to 15 from 20 and the problem has gone away, which indicates that it's a memory problem. I'm going to slowly increase the number of states until the problem re-appears.

  • Transform/Scale tool causing extreme lag

I'm having a problem that seems to be mostly triggered by the free transform tool.
when i use it causes photoshop to freeze up for up to a minute. Once it frees up it then clicks or performs everything I have tried to do while it was frozen.
this can even happen with tiny files under 1Mb in size and even if photoshop is the only application running. Quitting photoshop and relaunching the document usually helps for a few minutes. A full restart often helps for longer.
I have CS3 and a shiny fresh install of Leopard (brand new macbook with 4GB RAM) and have triple checked for upgrades for my system all applications and photoshop also.
I only have system fonts installed,
I'm running no 3rd party background apps.
This is driving me crazy please help if you have any ideas!
    Thanks
    Shirley

Do not overlook your PS Preferences > Scratch Disk setup. Look at your available Hard Disk(s) for free space. It could be your HD is in need of some house cleaning. At a minimum, use Apple's Disk Utility to repair Permissions. Also, take a look at a 3rd party utility like Disk Warrior or similar, and run their defragment utility.
It sounds like PS is looking for scratch to perform the activity. If your disk is fragmented, it may not have a big enough chunk of space to use for scratch. Another possibility is your RAM module(s) may need to be reseated ( although this would be a long-shot ) and/or cleaned. I would use an HD utility first, do the Disk Permissions, and run a cleanup utility like Mac Janitor or similar. And, absolutely check your scratch disk setup in PS's Preferences.
