Clone Tool Opacity

After a long break away from Photoshop, I have returned. I now have CS3 running on Mac OS 10.4.11. When I use the clone tool, even though I set the opacity to 100%, the cloned image is substantially lighter than the original. I have tried altering all of the other options in the palette, layers etc. but nothing seems to work. If I clone and reclone, the image gets nearer in density to the original.
Could some kind person suggest what I am doing wrong please?
Thanks
Dennis

Mike,
Thanks very much. When I last used Photoshop 3 there wasn't a flow control!
Many thanks!

Dennis

  • CS6 Clone tool opacity problem

I am familiar with the operation of the clone tool in previous versions of Photoshop.... However after upgrading to CS6 I am having a problem with the functionality of the clone tool.
Basically when using the clone tool when its set to 100% opacity & flow, it looks as though the clone tool is only set to 50% opacity.
I'm not sure if there is a setting I am not aware of that can fix this... I am using the default configuration that came with the program.
My previous version was CS3... clone tool worked perfectly there... I dont understand why the same tool doesnt perform the same way with the same apparent settings.
If anyone has a simple solution I would love to hear it.
    Thanks,
    Marc

You must be using a brush preset that has those settings (wet edges & build-up) enabled in the brush panel.
Not all the brushes have those settings enabled in the the brush panel unless you were to lock those settings or just changing the tip shape.
Also in the the brush panel there is only the option to set the tip shape, unlike cs3 that has both tip shape and brush presets in the same panel.
Cs6 uses a separate panel called Brush Presets for changing the presets.
In cs6 Build Up is the same as Airbrush on in cs3.
Transfer is what Other Dynamics was in cs3

  • Clone tool - why does it darken in layers?

Some years ago I used to use an old version of PS at work. It was before the CSs but I can't remember the version. When I used the clone tool it would simply clone the area with the same tonal depth and I used it a lot. I now have CS6 and when I use the tool whatever I clone will darken over existing tones, as layers, and not blend in. I hope that makes sense! Is there a setting so it clones at the same tonal depth and not layer-up?
    Cheers,
    Alex

Judging from the checkerboard patterns in your layer thumbnails, it looks like you're painting on layers with partial transparency.
Cloning partially transparent pixels over other partially transparent pixels makes them increase in opacity.  This is true with all versions of Photoshop, going way back.  I just did this with Photoshop 6.0.
Perhaps you could separate the layer into its pixels and maintain the transparency separately in a mask, though this is going to mean that you may have to do some extra work to get the layer to look right.  Or you could remove the transparency entirely and set your layer to Multiply blending, which if it's substantially white will darken the places you paint.

  • Need Help with the Clone Tool

I need help with the clone tool, in that when I clone (let's say grass as example),  the new cloned area does NOT come out as sharp as the area selected.  It comes out much softer and somewhat blurred.  I have the opacity and flow both set at 100%.  This is very frustrating since I can not get a true clone.

what "tip" do you have selected? where are you sampling from ( found in top option bar) ALSO make sure MODE is normal

  • Brushes in clone tool

In Elements 1 I could set brush hardness and shape in the Clone tool.  In Elements 3, I have only the presets menu for brushes, soft or hard.  (I have a good brush menu with the Healing Brush tool, but I have no opacity setting.))  Any ideas on how to  change hardness in the Clone tool?  Thanks.

I have PSE 3 on my old computer which isn't hooked up to the Internet. Press Shift + ] to soften brush. Each push of these two keys when pressed together softens the brush tip by 25%. Press Shift + ] to harden brush. Each push of these two keys when pressed together hardens the brush tip by 25%.
The Shift + [ and Shift + ]  shortcut works for the healing brush along with all the other brush tip tools.
Note: Not every brush will allow you to change hardness values...square brush set will not nor custom brushes that you have made. (If a brush tip does not allow you to adjust the hardness value with the paintbrush tool in the more options dialog it does not include that dynamic and will not adjust with any of the tools shortcut or not.)
Edit: Another useful shortcut is that you can rotate through the current set of brush tips by pressing < and >. < steps back one brush tip per press and > steps forward one brush tip per push. A variation on this shortcut is Shift + < and Shift + >. Shift + < will take you to the first brush tip in the current set brush tip list and Shift + > will take you to last brush tip in the list of the current set. I checked to make sure these shortcuts work in PSE 3 before posting this edit.
You can not adjust the healing brush tool's opacity setting. You can get around this by healing to a blank layer.   Use the layer's opacity setting to adjust opacity of healed area. You can heal to as many blank layers as needed if you need to vary opacity of healing.
Note: To heal to a blank layer, check the box in the options bar with the healing brush selected that says "Use All Layers". After this box is checked, you can heal on a blank layer over your image.

  • PSE8 Clone Tool Broken...

Today, the Clone Tool and Spot Healing Brush fail to work. I can select a spot to clone and the "+" will display when I try to drop the clone, but nothing happens. Mode Normal. Opacity set at 100%. Tried several .JPEG files. Tried PSE7 and it worked!
    Rebooted. Same thing.
    Then it worked!
    What happened?
BTW, I get a Win 7 message when I launch PSE8 that it failed to load properly and that it will close the app...but it doesn't?

Well, it didn't work long! Just a few minutes later it stopped working. I noticed that other tools were also not working: Paintbrush, Eraser, etc. But the Text tool and the Rectangle tool worked. ???
    I may try reinstalling?

  • Stamp/clone tool not working

The "align/not aligned" check box disappeared (it was there when first installed) and I cannot find/get it back. When using the stamp tool, it does not clone exactly what I sampled--it clones it lighter and not exactly what I selected.
HOW DO I FIX THIS? I have reinstalled PSCC, but the stamp/clone tool is still not working right. HELP!!!!!!

It looks like you have the Narrow Options bar enabled in the Photoshop>Preferences>Interface,
so the icons are different from what your probably used to.
You actually do have Aligned enabled, but you have the Flow set for 74% and have the Override Opacity
button enabled, which would make a difference if your using a pressure tablet.

I am using Lightroom 5 and am hapy about it, but recently I hav encountered a problem when trying to edit an image in another program, i.e. Elements. I used the clone tool, saved the result and went back to Lightroom to open the image there. I did find a second copy, but this is identic with the one I already had in Lightroom, and I can see noe result of the clone process.

At the moment I would say it is uncertain whether Acrobat is completely ignoring the change, or whether the changes you are making aren't affecting the ink density. I have a suggestion for a test you could make to see which is the case.
When editing in Photoshop just add a box or mark on the image, for your tests.
    - If this box does not appear in Acrobat, you know Acrobat is not seeing the edit
    - If this box does appear in Acrobat, you know the problem is that your tool for changing ink densities is not taking effect.

  • Problems With Clone Tool on Windows 7 and Elements 8

The clone tool is exhibiting strange behavior on a friends installation of Elements 8 on Windows 7.
Sometimes the clone tool refuses to clone, other times it will clone in over dark areas but not light areas.  We tried resetting to factrory settings.  This worked for a while be reverted to the strange behavior after a couple of days.
It's on the correct layer and the mode setting for the clone tool is Normal and when it works in a darker area it will make it even darker but will not darken a very light (white?) area.
    Anyone know what's happening?

I guess you have some blending mode other than 'Normal' selected.Click on the top-left corner of tool option bar and choose "Reset Tool".

  • Using Clone tool in Photoshop CS causes F9 to randomly activate

I'm not sure if this is a Photoshop problem or an OSX problem. I have posted on the Adobe site, but there was only one response and that didn't tell me much. And then I thought: it might actually be an OSX problem.
When using the clone tool in Photoshop CS, after an hour or so, under circumstances that I have not been able to replicate, PS starts to activate F9 on a continuing basis. Sometimes only once (all open windows appear separated); sometimes twice in quick succession; sometimes three or four times. The effect is exactly the same as pressing F9 1, 2, 3 or 4 times every couple of minutes.
I get around the problem by shutting all other windows (then the PS window I'm working in doesn't get changed - I just click on it to bring it back if it has been F9ed); or if the F9s get too annoying I shut down PS and start again.
Is this activation of F9 likely to be:
    * a PS bug (somehow it is activating F9)?; or
    * an OSX bug (PS does something and OSX triggers F9)?
I have not had the problem occur anytime except cloning in PS. I doubt it has anything to do with Expose (as the PS poster thought) because I do not use Expose.
The problem appears to me to be almost random. It might be in my particular setup, but I suspect that PS and/or OSX are going slightly haywire in a very esoteric way under certain vague circumstances. How's that for a non-specific description of the behaviour

This is an issue seen from time to time with Photoshop.  The Photoshop team has said they're going to take another look at it, over on the Photoshop bugfix / feature request forum (http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/_adobe_community_help_keeps_popping_ open).
Not everyone sees this, so take heart, it can work well.
One source of random corruption seen with Photoshop can be from buggy display drivers.  OpenGL implementations in display drivers are changing to this very minute.
You can try disabling OpenGL Drawing  for a while, do some editing and watch to see if it still happens.  You'd do this via Edit - Preference - Performance, and remember to restart Photoshop after making the change and before testing.
Or you can visit the web site of the maker of your video card and download/install their latest drivers.  I recommend this, no matter what else you do.

  • Clone tool problem

I had an image open with four layers. On the fourth layer I was using the clone tool and I was having problems with it. As I was cloning out a section, the clone tool started to make odd pixels on the image. I had to flatten the layers and create a new layer for the clone tool to work right.

Yes this question pops up quite regularly. Its a feature that is hidden away in a panel that should probably never have been introduced. These very basic options do not appear duplicated as they should, in the Options Bar.
The answer is - if you show your Clone Source Panel, there is a checkbox called "Show Overlay" that you need to uncheck. Experiment with "Clipped" as well.

  • CS2 Eye dropper and clone tool not picking up correct colour from image.

Hello everyone, Can anyone help me please. I have an iMac with 0SX 10.4.4.
Plenty of Ram and hard drive space. In using CS2 the eyedropper and clone tools will not pick up the exact same colour from the image that I require. It is always lighter in shade and has on occasion been white. Any help in solving this problem will be much appreciated.
    Yours in anticipation, Geoff Walter.

    >The eyedropper is picking-up the color as rendered in RGB on your Monitor...
Really? Not from the pixels in the file? So the same pixels are reported with different values depending on monitor setup? This is about how the eyedropper reports pixel values, not about how they are rendered to the screen, is that correct?
Just to be sure here, this is so even with the eyedropper set to point sample?
    Al
Edit: Or do you mean that this is a known problem with 0SX 10.4.4. and Photoshop, in which the values are picked up from the monitor and not from the file data?

Right-click on the tool directly below the red-eye and then you can choose either the clone tool or the pattern tool.

  • Non-functioning Clone Tool

Running Photoshop CS3 on Windows XP Professional 160GB; 77GB Free
All of a sudden after more than a year functioning fine my clone stamp tool stopped working. Everything else is working fine. I reinstalled CS3 and the tool worked fine then, after a reboot, it stopped working again.
I am not supertech knowledgeable, so other than running a complete scan with my anti-virus program and a Windows Defender scan, neither of which identified any problems, I'm at a loss.
I'd be grateful for any ideas.

So, an artist here just encountered this problem on a Mac running 10.4.11. None of the suggested fixes seemed to help her, but I was able to "reboot" the clone tool by launching the System Prefs->Wacom Tablet and tinkering around in there a bit.
To be honest, I am not sure exactly which part of my tinkering was successful. She had 2 tablets listed, even though one is the an old one that she no longer uses and also 2 grip pens listed. I deleted the extra copy of each, clicked with the grip pen a couple times to make sure the tablet that was hooked up was still functional and then quit system prefs. Upon returning to PS, everything was running smoothly again...
At any rate, it might be something to check.
BTW, disconnecting/reconnecting the Wacom from the USB chain had no effect. Tried that first.
