Cloned hard drive does not boot

I have an old G4 Cube which I decided to upgrade with some spare parts. The HDD I replaced was a 5400rpm 20GB Maxtor that appears to be the original, and the replacement drive is a 7200rpm 30GB Quantum Fireball that was pulled out of a Windows machine. Both are IDE, obviously.
I used an external USB to IDE adapter to mount the new hard drive, formatted it to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", and restored the original hard drive to the new one using Disk Utility.
The new hard drive doesn't want to boot when I put it in the system. It started up, chimed, restarted for some reason, then froze at the screen with the apple and the spinning circle.
If this were a Windows computer, I'd suspect the MBR didn't get cloned properly. I'm not sure if there's a similar problem with Macs.
And I'm not too keen on using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper when I can have a free alternative.
Does anyone have a solution? I've tried resetting the PRAM, etc. Is my HDD incompatible?
Thanks in advance

Hi-
Disk Utility images are difficult to get right for most people.

You are probably correct in your thinking. Different, yet similar in function.
And I'm not too keen on using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper when I can have a free alternative.
Huh?
CCC is voluntary shareware and the basic full clone version of SD! is freeware.
SD! is the better of the two, and definitely worth having.
Both are much better than Disk Utility.
Does anyone have a solution?
Use SuperDuper!.

  • X102e - Hard drive does not boot into Windows

Hi, I was trying to reinstall Windows on my X120e.
I tried clean install with Windows 7 Professional, but the hard drive does not boot into the Windows once it has done the first phase of the install(you know, the copying part)
After the restart done by Windows, it goes as far as "Starting Windows" but does not actually boot into the Windows.
When I try to install Windows with another HDD, the device works well, but I can't swap the HDD because it is not 7.5mm think HDD.
Is there any possibility the HDD will work trough any software-level process? The HDD works fine as external HDD when tested with external HDD adapter, and installs well. only problem is that it fails to boot

    Thank you for reply.
This is not exactly the issue. I was talking about the HDD originally installed in the PC.
The PC successfully recognizes the external disk I used to install the Windows, but the problem was that I did not boot into the "First boot" screen, which basically works on the already installed data.
As of now I have installed an SSD and is working fine. strange part is that HDD works just fine when I use it as an external HDD via adapter. Strange huh?

  • MK1032GAX Hard drive does not boot

I have a Satellite M65 S9092.  I am replacing the hard drive. It is a Toshiba MK 1032GAX, the same model originally installed.  I can reload the Recovery disks, then when it reboots it hangs after the first Toshiba screen.
I can put the drive in an external carrier and read all the files, it just won't boot.  I have taken on old 40 gb Travelstar drive, loaded the Recovery disks and it boots fine.
The bios recognizes the MK 1032GAX.  Any suggestions?

  • Cloned Hard Drive Will Not Boot

Hi, I have an early 2008 IMac running 10.7.5 that I'm upgrading the hard drive on.  I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the original 320gb drive to a new
Seagate Barracuda 7200 1 TB 7200RPM SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST1000DM003.  After successfully creating the clone, I was able to boot from the new drive via a USB enclosure.  I used the "command+option+R+P" meathod to select the new drive in the enclosure.  Next, I installed the new drive into the IMac, and verified that all cables were securely fastened.  Now when I turn on the IMac, I get the flashing grey folder with the question mark.  I'm unable to get any of the boot-up commands to work, for example: "command+option+R+P" or holding down "option."  I've even tried putting the old drive into the enclosure via USB and the new drive into the IMac with no luck.  I still can't access the screen that lets me select the startup disk.  The only thing that works is starting the IMac with the original Install CD.  With the Install CD, I can see the new drive with Disk Uitlity, but it won't let me select it for startup.
    Thanks for your help!
    Mark

Humm... WD would normally put one in with the screw kit, at least they used to.
I would contact Seagate Support first and explain what you are doing and what we think the problem might be.
The other thing that could be causing you grief, is how you set the Partition Mac Scheme? When you were setting up and formatting the New Drive, did you also change the Partition Map Scheme from MS-DOS to GUID Partition Table. The Intel iMac can only boot Internal Drives that are Partitioned GUID Partition Table and Formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Looks like your model supports a SATA II Hard Drive.

  • External FW hard drive does not boot

I purchased an Accomdata 160 GB exernal hard drive...has one USB and two firewire ports. I use the firewire ports only. Installed OS X to make it bootable (I have already another bootable FW harddrive). When ever I start my "bootable" HD, Mac's grey screen shows the famous question mark for a short while, then just boots up from the internal hard drive...it does this independent of computer is is attached to. Changes cable around...tried other port...nothing.
According to the manual, the drive should be bootable without any tweaks or drivers.
    So, what is wrong?

Superduper freeware version only let me make backups but no clones.
Eh! The standard "backup - all files" produced by the freeware version should be a bootable clone! The "safety clones" are more restricted subsets of the necessary files , and are only available in the shareware version.
I quote from their web page:
    Free "Clone Only" Version
You can download SuperDuper! right now and back up and clone your drives for free! The unregistered version will allow this very useful functionality, but that's only scratching the surface of SuperDuper's full capabilities.
I actually created a bootable clone of my PB using it before I bought the full version, so I promise it should be able to be done.
You might want to check out the FAQ at http://www.shirt-pocket.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=7
If you tried the SuperDuper "back up all files" and it wasn't bootable, then perhaps it indicates that there really is a problem using this particular external drive as a boot drive. Maybe it is a bridge issue? I seem to remember we were talking about that in another thread for some reason a while back.
    Cheers

  • Hard Drive does not have enough space/error message

Hello: I am new to Mac but have been having trouble with my iMac for a while. I can no longer download my software updates. I have an error message that states "Your hard drive does not have enough space" - 5.7 GB is required.
I only have a 1 GB machine. What am I doing wrong?
When I go to my Macintosh HD icon on the desktop, it says at the bottom of that window that I have 495.9 MB available.
The error message tells me to go to the Startup file to delete items. I go there, but there's only two files. I do have music/photos/but I do not understand what's going on with my computer.
In addition, it turns itself off often, for no apparent reason. Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    J.Renee

The error refers to space on your hard drive, not memory. Unless you've mis-typed, if you have only 495.9 MBs free on your hard drive then you are definitely out of space. If you continue operating with so little free space you are risking a catastrophic loss of data.
To free up space you will either need to delete unneeded personal files or copy some of your bigger files off to an external hard drive then delete them from your internal drive. Alternatively you can replace the internal drive with a larger drive.
You should maintain no less than 15 GBs or 15% of the hard drive's capacity as free space whichever is greater.
If you meant to type 495.9 GBs then you may have a corrupted disk directory. Try the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • My external hard drive does not show up on my desktop

My external hard drive does not show up on my dest top but, does shows in my Windows (vmware fusion) end although I can't see it ob my desktop but, I can eject it properly like any external drive. I have connected it to my windows and ejected properly (per the suggestion of someone on this forum) but, it still doesn't show on my Mac. I see the blue light and hear it running though. I have looked for it in disk utility but, still can find it. I have changed the cable and it still did not show on my Mac. I connected another external drive  and that showed up on my desktop.Any help????

if it is NTFS then you need Paragon Software NTFS for Mac.
NTFS volumes are suppose to be read only but in practice external drives don't always mount or work.
If it is not NTFS then you need more details. Need more anyway.
PS: this is not a MacBook area, it is Mac 65lbs tower related forum.

Look in the Utility folder which is located inside the Applications folder.
You don't want to do anything with the disk on a PC if you want it to work on the Mac. They both use different formats.

  • External hard-drive does not reconnect after sleep

    Hi everyone
I am trying to use my Energy Saver to SLEEP my iMac after 1 hour. It goes to sleep no problem, but on wake-up, my external USB hard drive does not reconnect. There is also an error message that I didn't disconnect the drive properly. I fear this may be one of Mac OS X's "features". Has anyone encountered the same thing?
On a side note, I also find that my USB keyboard does not always reconnect as well. I use a windows USB mouse that I have connected to wake it from sleep, however my USB keyboard (the small one for Macs), sometimes does not allow me to type unless I unplug it and back in.
Another point of note is that both the HD and the keyboard are connected to the iMac through a 7 port USB hub.

    r_dizzle wrote:

I think this might be the issue. If the iMac is waking back up, it will likely be waking up this HUB, but the HUB might not be re-initialising the connection between OS X and the external drive or the keyboard.
After waking the iMac, if you unplug the external drive from the HUB, then plug it back in again, does OS X pick it up again? Have you tried plugging the external drive directly into the iMac and then testing what the result is?
If you read back on what you've said, you pointed out that you have a USB mouse that you use to wake the iMac from sleep. Is this mouse directly connected to the iMac? If so, it surely can't be a coincidence that a directly connected USB device can wake the iMac from sleep, but any USB devices connected to the iMac via a USB HUB cannot.
I would suggest you test the drive as it is directly connected to the iMac. I would complete the same test with the keyboard too. I think you'll find it's the USB HUB.
    I hope this helps.

  • External hard drive does not shut down

Hello, When my mini mac goes to sleep my samsung external hard drive does not shut down or dismount properly. when i wake computer i have a error message stating improperly ejected hard drive. It also does not reconize HD until I disconnect and reconnet??? PLEASE HELP Thank you

My Mini was doing the same thing until I reset the PRAM. With four external drives. They would stop inadvertently with an "improperly ejected" error. Granted two of the drives went bad (6 and 7 years old) but a brand spanking new Seagate and a 3 year old Hitachi drive doing the same. Haven't seen the error since resetting the PRAM.
If you don't know how to do that, Reboot while holding the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys until your hear the startup chime three times and then release the keys.

  • External Hard Drive does not mount

My 2TB external hard drive does not mount and I cannot get it to.  Have tried turning the hard drive off and then back on.  No response.  Any thoughts as to how I can get it to be recognized?

You can try doing a SMC reset, if it doesn't work the first time it's totally OK to reset the SMC several times.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
