Cloned SL server is trying to access Time Machine - and cannot

I have cloned a virtual SL server, equipped it with new IP address, server name, license no etc. I want to backup this server using Time Machine to the same Time Capsule the original server is already using. It seems however that to Time Machine / Time Capsule it is still the original server that tries to backup. Error messages indication that the backup set is busy point towards this assumption.
I would therefore expect to have to change a parameter in my virtual server so Time Machine / Time Capsule accepts the cloned server as a separate server, not just the original server acessing twice. Would you know what to change
Thank you for any feedback.

  • I'm trying to install Time Machine and Airport Update V 1.0 but installer

I am in fact running 10.5.6. Would the fact that this update was dated in March of 2008 have anything to do with it? I think it's the latest update for TM and Airport.
    Any suggestions?

Kappy, how'd you get so smart. On further investigation I discovered that I had already downloaded and installed that update. I will follow your advice in the future, not risking showing off as a fool.

  • Trying to access time machine causes the macbook to freeze up

I have a significant problem with iphoto. Now I would like to access my pictures using the time machine. This is what I do and what happens.
    1) go to the dock and click on time machine icon
    2) a bar with blue traveling stripe appears says connecting to time machine
    3) after less than 1 or 2 minutes the bar turns grey and stops moving
4)now nothing works. there is nothing I can do but shut off the macbook with the little on and off button at the top right hand corner of the computer.
    5) i turn the computer off. Wait a minute or two
    6) turn computer on
    7) repeat steps 1-6
8)now that I have gone thru this process i get the color wheel all the time.
I have tried to find answers in all sorts of mac books, discussions, you tube and google.
When I see something I think might work it's to complicated for me to follow mostly because I don't know where to begin, which of the many ways that there are to enter a program. Which honestly is what started this problem a couple months ago. New to the mac. Started working with my photos with no knowledge of the ins and outs at all and in doing so I began to loose group after group of photos to the grey/black ! monster.
My happy thought was knowing they were all backed up by the time machine. I could recover them from there, SMILE. Not now I cant even access that now. Things keep getting worse.
Please save a Mac by helping me

Why not start by reading the three User tips at the top of this forum's topic listing, especially the one on troubleshooting.
My guess is you have something faulty with your system from what you describe. I would start by:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next try booting into safe mode to see if the problem ceases.
Download and install AppleJack - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Read the documentation then boot into single-user mode and run the software per its instructions.
If none of the above help then you will likely need to reinstall OS X. You may be able to do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Trying To Access Time Machine From Replacement iMac

    Hi There,
I had an issue with my iMac that could only be resolved by replacing the unit. I used the Migration Assistant to transfer the data then tried to access my Time Capsule to use Time Machine. I keep getting the error,"The Backup Disk Image Cannot Be Created". It recognizes the Time Capsule, but cannot create the backup image. I cannot use the other solution, with the Ctrl-Click...Browse Other Time Machines, as it does not see another time Machine. It recognizes the Time Capsule, but cannot create the disk image.

For backups on a Time Capsule, you may have to mount the sparsebundle first.
Open Finder. Click on Time Capsule -> Time Capsule Disk -> yourbackup.sparsebundle. Double-click on it and press Skip when prompted. Your sparsebundle should now be mounted on your Desktop.
Try to +Browse Other Time Machine disks+ via the ctrl-click on the TM icon.

  • Keychain error -25299 when trying to access Time Machine

I am in the process of migrating to a new iMac and am having trouble getting Time Machine to work on my Time Capsule. It was working fine with my old iMac and it still works fine with my Macbook but when I try to access it on the new machine I am asked for the Time Machine password and the I get the message: "Keychain error -25299 occurred while creating a System Keychain entry for the username "XXXXX XXXX" and URL "XXXXXXX"
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

This is a Time Capsule problem, not Time Machine itself.
It sounds like you need to set up a new password for your TC, or use the one from your old Mac.
You might do better in the Time Capsule forum, as many of us here (including me) aren't very familiar with TCs.
The TC forum is hiding in the Digital Life section, and is at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1253

  • "An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)." when trying to access time machine backup

    Hi folks,
I recently replaced my hard drive in my early 2008 MBP running lion (fully patched).  I cloned my existing drive onto the new one with seemingly no side effects.  Except now when I "Enter Time Machine", I get this error and am unable to go back in time.  Note that I can see the prior records, but they are purple and inaccessible.
Does anyone know what this error code means?

  • Upgraded to Mavericks, Enter Time Machine and cannot see any previous backup at all

MBP, upgrade from 10.6.8 to Mavericks.
After "Enter Time Machine", the time line on the right side of the screen does not show any previous backup at all.
In Finder, I can see the backup folder and the inside contents.
In Time Machine Preference, I did select the disk for backup again.
    Any idea ?  Thank you.

Thank you for your reply and the links.
    I did this:
    1) I have two ext. USB drives for the MBP time machine backup, did not occur to me to try the other one which is the very first disk, let's call it disk 1, I used for backup, the other one I started using after a year or so.
    2) reboot with the disk 1 connected
    3) do a "Backup Now", and I forgot the exact dialogs and what they say.
    4) something like, "choose a disk for the backup", I chose disk 1
    5) it knows I had two disk for backup and ask me if I want to use two disk for backup, click yes
    6) the time machine pref. says something like initial backup (after new system installed?)
    7) after it done, I can see the previous time machine back up and the time line goes back to where it was before.
    8) connect the disk 2 and "Backup Now", it just went to backup right away, after it's done, I can see the prev. backups and the time line too.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Can't access Time Machine backups through GUI

Here's what happens when I tried to access Time Machine backups. This description is when I try to "browse" backups from within iPhoto. I believe that a similar thing happened when trying to look directly after opening the Time Machine from within the Dock:
The window goes to the center of the screen (smaller than normal) and the top menu bar disappears (you can see the desktop through the empty translucent bar). Nothing else happens. You can't apply expose hot corners or activate the dock.
It looks like maybe the Time Machine layout is TRYING to activate (as in the original demos), but doesn't complete. There is no timeline of windows or the sidebar timeline.
Any ideas what I need to do to fix this? Once it happens, the only way that I can back out (since the Dock is inaccessible) is the hit the escape key a couple of times.

When I do it from within iPhoto, I'm not getting the multiple panes or the forward backward arrows. All I get is the first/current frame in the centered pane.
Here is a screenshot of iPhoto before I select "browse backups":

By the way, I don't use Mail.app, so I can't really test it through there. Is there another Apple app that has this functionality built in?

Hmmm... not exactly sure what you are trying to do with Time Machine. If you are in iPhoto, you will see the folder you are viewing. For example, I can view my Last Import folder for Aug. 20. Now I can clip on the pane behind it and go back in Time to what my Last Import Folder on, say, Aug. 13, one week ago. Obviously, I will be viewing photos I Last Imported as of Aug. 13. I can also click on the forward and back arrows on the right side to view on a different date. Sorry, not that comfortable posting personal pics to show you what it should look like, but I hope this description helps.
Using Mail as an example is much simpler as the Inbox will change on a daily (even hourly) basis. In the case of Mail, if you start deleting mail on Aug. 20 from the Inbox and suddenly realize you deleted something you didn't want to, simply click the TM icon and you will be in a TM interface. Go back to the dated backup BEFORE you deleted that email and RESTORE it. It will restore it into a NEW TM folder to indicate this is a restored mail. Use the gear icon on the top when using Finder to restore files.
    Good luck!

  • Both my iphone 4s and my ipad3 will not connect to the server when trying to access my email account. Why, and how do I fix it.

Since 29/10/2012 my iphone 4s and more recently my ipad 3 will not connect to the server when trying to access my email account. All I get is an error message saying that 'cannot get mail, connection to the server failed' I hadnt changed any settings it just happened. I have since done a complete re-boot on the ipad but to no avail. Anybody got any suggestions?

No. Everything was working fine and then it wasn't. I hadn't changed any settings or switched either one off. When the phone stopped working properly I ignored it because I always have my ipad with me but that just sopped working properly and now I am stuffed. I have tried most solutions suggested on here even wiping the ipad clean and re-booting. I did this exactly the same way as when I first got it but still no joy. The same with the phone.

Am not able to use facebook on my Iphone 4, softwareversion:iOS7.1, also tried to access through safari and chrome that i have installed it gives an error message saying: "safari could not open the page because server stopped responding", i tried network reset, reset the whole device, rebooting , changing airplane mode rebooting nothing fix the issue, but i can access other sites and google , am using Vodafone as my carrier with 2g network, when at home able to access facebook.com through wifi in safari requesting assistance thank you

If you can access Facebook while on Wifi at home, but you are unable to access it while away running on your carrier's 2G network, I could phone your carrier.  You have already completed the Cellular Data troubleshooting for the iPhone, so any limitations keeping your from connecting to Facebook over cellular will have to be answered by your carrier.

I have Yahoo mail (POP) account.  Mine is working fine at present.  I do occasionally get asked for password while sending mail.  I have had your issue in the past and it usually clears up in a few hours.  Sometimes I sign out and then back in and it starts working again.

You can't open your backups directly with apps.
But you can see some types of files in your backups.  If you're still on Snow Leopard (or Lion with iPhoto '09 or earlier), see the gray box at the end of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15.
If you're on Lion with iPhoto '11, you can use the Finder to see the iPhoto library, per the beginning of that same link.  All you can see there is the library and size.

  • Interaction of Time Machine and cloned backups.

I am not sure how TM works so perhaps someone can explain what is going on here. I use TM to back-up my internal disk plus external firewire and external USB drives. The TM drive is a dedicated 1TB Lacie Firewire. In addition I keep a clone of my start-up drive (CarbonCopyCloner - CCC) on a weekly basis.
Everything works swimingly but here's the question: I recently had to restore the start-up drive after a crash by restarting and restoring from the clone. That worked OK but then TM, on its next iteration, copied the whole drive (100GB) even though the vast majority of files were the same and unchanged. Is this normal behaviour? If so, I will be using up my TM filespace PDQ.

I found this http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4387985 which says:
"Well thank me later I got it working fellas. It was there in front of our faces with the exception of doing a chown and chmod.
Someone else please confirm I will post steps.
    1) disconnect airport disk and plug into computer as a USB drive directly.
    2) Set up time machine to use this volume.
    3) In terminal cd to volume "cd /Volume/HDD"
    4) In terminal "touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported" this will create an invisible file.
    5) In terminal "sudo chown root:admin .com.apple.timemachine.supported"
    6) In terminal "sudo chmod 1775 .com.apple.timemachine.supported"
    7) In terminal "ls -l -a" the .com.apple.timemachine.supported file should be -rwxrwxr-t
    8) eject disk, unplug from mac, plug into Airport.
    9) mount at mac using connect to server in finder (command k) and afp://airportname.local./HDname
    10) see if time machine now sees the drive and tries to use it."
    Also, this http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4388264
    " A simpler method....
I also got Time Machine working over AEBS but with a much simpler method.
    1. Connect your USB disk directly to the Mac
    2. Set up Time Machine and let your initial backup run
    3. Eject the disk and connect to the AEBS
    4. You need to 'touch' the disk by opening it in Finder, then Time Machine realises where it is and carries on.
Works for me on my iMac (wired) and Macbook (wireless to AEBS) - TM keeps the backups tidily with separate directories for each machine.
Still have an issue with my Macbook - it doesn't see the disks after sleeping.
Obviously Apple need to fix this - it shouldn't need me to view the disk each time so that TM can see it, and it should enable direct access to new disks via AEBS."
