  • Sandboxing old system disk on new machine?

    Hi,
    my question is a fairly simple one, but somewhat convoluted, although I'll try my best to word it clearly:
    I just bought an '09 MacPro and stuck in 3 extra 1TB HDD's. I partitioned the 4th drive in two sections of 500GB each. On one of these partitions I want to clone the system drive of my old '07 iMac, the other partition will be used for Bootcamp.
    I will use the iMac's HDD clone as an alternative boot disk, occasionally.
    I suspect that there are some iffy things on my iMac, since power-down used to be near-instantaneous but now takes almost 20 seconds. That happened just overnight, BTW. Not a gradual process as a result of accumulating bloat, I think.
    The one thing I want to avoid, is any sort of malware creeping into my new machine because I cloned my old system drive onto the new one. Is there any way in which I can "sandbox" the cloned boot disk and restrict that system from accessing/recognizing/affecting the other disks?
    I basically want to run them as two entirely separate systems, even if they use the same CPU/RAM/GPU.
    Any sort of input will be appreciated, thanks.
    PS: what is that F8 thing again, where you use the other computer as a target drive?

    There are likely no hardware drivers on the iMac clone configuration that will allow you to boot the newer Mac with.
    Clone as a archive to access files, but likely can't boot, almost positive of that fact.
    The only chance in heck is if the OS X you installed on the old Mac has the hardware drivers for the newer Mac. Say a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disk for instance. Grey disks or factory installed OSX on the old Mac configuration? Forget it.

    You can hold c boot the iMac off the 10.6 installer disk and simply install OS X over the installed verison, then immediatly Software Update. This replaces OS X only, not your files or programs, might cure your issue.
    Back up your user file folders (Music, pictures etc) to a external drive and disconnect before doing anything.
    If your still having issues with the iMac after resinstalling OS X, if your hard drive has enough room (full hard drives slow down a machine, look in Activity monitor) you can create a new user and log into that and see if your problems magically disappear.
    You can also get a Firewire cable and adapters (Firewire 800 to 400) hook the two Mac's together and T boot the iMac's hard drive to the desktop of the newer Mac, run a ClamXav scan, grab choice files and so forth, no need for a clone which you likely can't boot anyway.

    Well you likely can't clone as it won't boot anyway. So since your not running the OS on the clone on your new machine, code can't execute if it's on there.
    Far as I know there are no "hopping" malware for OS X that runs simply by connecting a infected media. OS X warns you of any new programs it hasn't seen previously before allowing it to run.
    If you T boot and jsut extract your choice files, run a ClamXav scan, your likely going to be just fine.
    Just don't transfer the old programs from the old Mac and run them on your newer machine.
    I basically want to run them as two entirely separate systems, even if they use the same CPU/RAM/GPU.
    But differnet hardware and no hardware drivers, so I'm almost positive it won't work at all.
    PS: what is that F8 thing again, where you use the other computer as a target drive?
    Hold T and boot the Mac you want's hard drive to appear on the desktop of the other, you need Firewire cable and adpater if one is one 800 and the other is 400. (defaults to 400 speeds.)
    Good Luck.

  • Could really use your help- BSOD with new Samsung ssd in a GX660r

    I recently put a new Samsung 830 series 128 gb ssd into my MSI GX660r. It'll work fine for about a day, then start crashing constantly (BSOD) whenever it's in normal mode. If I start it up in safe mode it seems to be working fine, I haven't had a BSOD in it yet, but in normal mode it's crashing. Any help? I'm hoping its just a driver issue or something, but I really have no idea what to do and since I'm in grad school it's really not a good time (since I have no time to take care of the problem myself) I'll paste in the most recent crash log that it gave me:

  • Pavilion m7 1015dx, win7 will not complete installation on a new Samsung ssd

    Trying to do a clean install of win7 on a new ssd.  Seems to be going well until time for reboot.  then things go downhill from there, until nothing responds. Nothing I try helps. I tried from both a iso win7 disc, and from a disk I have from my desktop.  Same results.  Is it possible to do a recover onto a new ssd?  If so, how?
    Thanks
    This question was solved.

    You're very welcome.
    Unfortunately, there is no way to change the drive controller setting to AHCI but that really should not have mattered since your notebook has an Intel Series 7 chipset which when you install the latest Intel RST software for your model allows for TRIM support for SSD's.
    So, make sure you have installed this driver and software, and then see this related post below that.
    There should have been no degradation in the performance of your SSD.

  • I can't install OS X ML (Kerbel Panic) on my new Samsung SSD, help me please !

    Hi,
    I have a problem with my MacBook Pro Unibody 13". Since I installed a new SSD drive (256GB Samsung Pro 840 series), I can not installed Mountain Lion with a USB key. At the end of copying files, it restarts and kernel panic appears. I do not have this problem with my old drive ssd (Verbatim 128GB).
    At first I thought my HDD was broken but after the exchange through amazon I found the same error.
    Thank you for your help and sorry for my bad English!

    Try using Internet Recovery (cmd-opt-r on restart) instead of the USB stick.

    Hi, my notebook have disk problems and I bought a new HD. On the original HD there are 2 HP native partitions, HP_TOOLS and HP_RECOVERY, for this reason, I would clone the entire drive on the new drive. How can I do ? Thanks,

I could create a recovery disk and install the original system with all partitions HP on the new drive ? If yes, could you explain me how do this step by step ? Thanks.
    I gather that you did  not make recovery media before the hard disk problem began.  That could be a bit of an issue. If you did not,then there are a few options available to you. you can purchgase a usb recovery flashdrive or recovery disk set gfrom HP or an HP partner. If  Windows 7 is your OS, and the twenty five character license activation key is still visible, use a Windows installation meda and perform a clean instalklation of the operating system.

  • Disk Utility - New Bundled SparseDisk volumes cannot change view

    Running SL 10.6.1 on a early 2009 Mini.
    Through Disk Utility, I created a new Sparse Bundled Disk Image with 256bit encryption. That is no problem, except I cannot customize the view of the mounted image. The default is icon view, with no toolbar at the top of the window. I want to have the regular array of toolbar icons at the top of the image and view it in column mode, but when I manually change this, it doesn't apply to the mounted disk image window.
    Older disk images I created in other OS versions mount and display just fine, but I cannot figure out why this is a problem in SL.
    Any thoughts or fix suggestions? Greatly appreciated!

  • Samsung SSD

    Has anyone figured out how to update the firmware on a Samsung SSD 830 without having to use a PC or BootCamp with Window 7 on it?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    ok...try this - dump superduper and download carbon copy cloner 3.5....trial version will work....new version is compatible with Mountain Lion
    connect your old hard drive in a usb external enclosure - restart your macbook while pressing on the options key.
    once you see the apple logo - release the options key and choose your external as the boot drive.
    open disk utility - format/erase your samsung 830 - mac os extended journaled.
    exit disk utility - open carbon copy cloner - click on clone - you might get a pop up saying that you haven't created a mountain lion recover disk - create one with carbon copy (this only comes up if ML creates a recover partition in your hard drive).  once the recover partition is done - proceed with the clone.
    once the clone is done - exit carbon copy and shut your macbook down.
    disconnect usb external enclosure - turn your macbook back on and you should be up and running.  if your boot time is taking too long - over 45 secs - once you get to your desktop - go to system preferences - startup disk - select your samsung ssd as the startup disk and restart your macbook.
    NOTE: Before you proceed with the clone - open disk utility and verify your disk permissions in your source drive and repair them.  once repair is done - proceed with the clone.
    Good luck - hope you get it sorted out...

    Hello, I just updated my iMac with a brand new Samsung SSD drive. The drive speed is amazing now.
    I ran Disk Utility to check that everything is fine, but got this message:
    File system check exit code is 0.
    It doesn't show that the drive needs repair, but neither shows like in past that de test went OK.
    Should I be worried?

  • Tiger Disk Utility filled up target AND system disk, CANNOT reboot!

    I used Apple Disk utility to securely erase free space on a target drive on my laptop. Disk Utility filled both my target disk and system disk (system disk was not even specified in the erase procedure). Both disks have ZERO bytes free. The System disk will NOT startup and I cannot use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory cuz there is no space. Tried using terminal to rm temp files, but it did not see the system disk.
    *Problem Path:*
    1) Laptop (Leopard OS X current version) video stopped working. Likely known problem with Graphics card.
    2) Connected G5 (Tiger) to Laptop via Firewire with Laptop working in Target Disk mode (data only mode).
    3) Laptop disk showed up as a disk volume on G5.
    4) Used Apple disk utility on Tiger G5 to securely erase FREE disk space on Laptop disk drive B4 taking it in to get repairs. Amount to be securely erased was appr 65 to 70 GB.
    5) Left G5 Tiger disk utility to work overnight... had to interrupt next day. Restarted..
    6) Next day, the G5 disk utility said that it would be an est. 97 hours to complete. Stopped process.
    7) Both target disk and system disk showed that 0 bytes (yes, ZERO bytes free) were free on either drive.
    8) Attempted to restart with literature saying that you can restart Disk Utility as though it would delete temp files and start again. System could not be found (folder/face/folder/face showed on the screen)
    *Attempted Solution:* (DW ~ DiskWarrior 4)
    1) Started system up using DW CD. System disk came up as unknown.
    2) Used Disk Warrior to rebuild directory on disk, but I believe that there is NO space at all. Disk Warrior took a very long time...more than an hour.
    3) Terminated DW (it was still verifying directory)
    4) Restarted system from Tiger install.
    5) Attempted to use Tiger Disk Utility to verify system disk (System still can see it, but won't mount it-- name is now disk1s3 or something like that). Disk Utility said that disk directory had problems and needed to be repaired. Ran the repair, but Disk Utility said that it could not be repaired.
    6) Quit Disk Utility and entered into the terminal to see if I could access the disk through unix commands. Access volumes from root. Only the other disk on the system showed up, not the system disk. So attempt to delete temporary files that MAY have been created by Disk Utility could not be done.
    7) Restarted system using DW. Drive showed up as Unknown. Clicked on [Apple key] rebuild to do scavenge function. Left it for two hours. Little to no change. Left it to work all night.
    HELP!
    Will DiskWarrior use other volume on system or memory to save off or rebuild directory of bad drive? Anyone know of a utility that can help?
    ANY HELP you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated. I have been put behind on research in my graduate studies and am in a terrible situation in now BOTH of my systems are inaccessible.

    Hello HB3, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    8) Attempted to restart with literature saying that you can restart Disk Utility as though it would delete temp files and start again. System could not be found (folder/face/folder/face showed on the screen)
    You really shouldn't use a lower OSes DU to work on a higher one.
    2) Used Disk Warrior to rebuild directory on disk, but I believe that there is NO space at all. Disk Warrior took a very long time...more than an hour.
    What version of DW?
    Anyone know of a utility that can help?
    If DiskWarrior can't fix it, you might try Data Rescue II...

    (Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to).
    Or FileSalvage...

    to recover what you can, both can work when Disks are unmountable.

  • Create a new Database in an other server using a copie of RMAN backup

    Hi all,
    I want to create an other instance for our production database. We have disk and tape in rman backup. My question is can i create a new database using our disk backup in an other server?
    If some procedure or steps is there, email it to my adresse [email protected]
    Hamid.
    Thanks

    By means of the use of Recovery Manager it is possible to duplicate a database out from a previously taken rman backup. The method will be outlined in the next few lines.
    Let's assume a source database named SRCDB and the target database, named GEMINI. A unix like environment is assumed, but it can be implemented on windows as well, just beware of the particular Oracle implementation on a windows platform (orapwd file name, service creation, path format)
    1. Create a password file for the Cloned (GEMINI) instance:
    orapwd file=/u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.1.0/dbs/orapwGEMINI password=password entries=10
    2. Configure tnsnames.ora and listner.ora
    Properly identify the database at the tnsnames.ora and have the instance manually registered against the listener.ora files, both files located at the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory.
    2.a Manually register the database against the listener (listener.ora)
    (SID_DESC =
    (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.1.0)
    (SID_NAME = GEMINI)
    2.b Added the target GEMINI to the tnsnames.ora
    GEMINI =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost.mydomain.com)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (ORACLE_SID = GEMINI)
    2.c Reload the listener
    lsnrctl reload
    3. Create a new init.ora for the cloned database.
    Next create an init.ora file for the cloned database. In case the same paths cannot be used on the target host, either because it is the same source host or because those paths are not reproducible on the target, then DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT may be required to be defined
    DB_NAME=GEMINI
    CONTROL_FILES=(/u02/oradata/GEMINI/control01.ctl,
    /u02/oradata/GEMINI/control02.ctl,
    /u02/oradata/GEMINI/control03.ctl)
    # Convert file names to allow for different directory structure.
    DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT=(/u02/oradata/SRCDB/,/u02/oradata/GEMINI/)
    LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT=(/u01/oradata/SRCDB/,/u01/oradata/GEMINI/)
    # block_size and compatible parameters must match those of the source database
    DB_BLOCK_SIZE=8192
    COMPATIBLE=9.2.0.0.0
    4. Connect to the cloned instance
    ORACLE_SID=GEMINI; export ORACLE_SID
    sqlplus /nolog
    conn / as sysdba
    5. Create an SPFILE based on the init.ora
    CREATE SPFILE FROM PFILE='/u01/app/oracle/admin/GEMINI/pfile/init.ora';
    6. Start the database in NOMOUNT mode:
    STARTUP FORCE NOMOUNT;
    7. Connect to the TARGET, CATALOG and AUXILIARY databases.
    By means of the rman three connections are open, one for the Source Database (SOURCEDB), another for the Catalog database (RCAT), and one more for the cloned database (GEMINI)
    ORACLE_SID=GEMINI; export ORACLE_SID
    rman TARGET sys/password@SRCDB CATALOG rman/rman@RCAT AUXILIARY /
    8. Complete or Incomplete clone (recover)
    From the rman the database using one of the following commands:
    8.a Clone the database by means of a complete recover.
    DUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE TO GEMINI;
    8.b Clone the database up to a defined point in time in the past by means of an incomplete recover
    DUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE TO GEMINI UNTIL TIME 'SYSDATE-2';
    9. Process finished.
    Once the process is finished, the newly created GEMINI database is ready to be used as an independent new cloned database.

    I want to migrate my windows 7 system disk to a new, larger, SSD. My Photoshop CS5 is on the old system disk. Can I clone the old SSD to the new one and the just deactivate the CS5 install on the old SSD and activate it on the new, cloned, SSD?
    I'd like this to be as painless as possible so I was going to use Acronis. My recent experience with an apple product has convinced me that "brainless" is the new modality in software......

    I think Acronis will easily let you achieve your goal.
    Theoretically you shouldn't need to deactivate/reactivate, but I would do it anyway - just to be on the safe side.
