Cloned working Arch image to another machine and it won't boot

Okay, I know I'm being a bit naughty, but I've cloned numerous Linux partition images to different machines and always managed to get them working before, with appropriate tweaking (grub, fstab, xorg.conf, etc). Linux is wonderful compared to Windows in this respect!
What I have got working: a fully updated Arch system, cloned from a Compaq Evo D500 system to a HP Vectra VL800 system.
What I haven't got working: cloning the above from the Compaq Evo D500 system to an ESys E320 Via 1.2GHz laptop system. I reinstalled GRUB (booting first from Arch Install CD, with 'arch root=/dev/sda2', then 'grub-install /dev/sda') and rebooted. The GRUB menu displays fine, and I select Arch; about 4 lines of messages appear very fast on the screen and then nothing - no hard disk activity and nothing whatsoever on the screen. No keypresses work (including Ctrl+Alt+Del) and I've got to power off.
However, when I boot from the Arch Install CD with 'arch root=/dev/sda2', it does take me into the normal desktop system, apparently working quite happily. So, it looks as though the Install CD kernel + the rest from my hard disk installation = working system! I tried reinstalling the kernel ('kernel26' package) and that worked fine, but nothing has changed when I boot from GRUB.
I would be most grateful if some kind person could indicate how I might avoid having to re-install Arch from scratch on this laptop. (I'd managed to clone Mepis 7 onto this machine successfully a few weeks ago.)
PS: I checked that GRUB's device.map was okay; also tried the boot parameters: noapic acpi=off pci=routeirq etc)

@eerok,
Many thanks for the extra details.
Here's what I've found: everything works when I downgrade the kernel (and dependent packages) from 2.6.24 to 2.6.22. If I then upgrade the kernel, I get the same problems again. So it looks as though the new kernel doesn't like my laptop!
I also found this bug report: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9014
with some similar symptoms. But specifying 'ext3' on the MODULES= line in mkinitcpio.conf didn't change anything, so I think this must be a different problem.
Well, thanks for the help and at least I have a (relatively recent) working system!

  • CD-ROM not detected on notebook, but tested on another machine and works.

I am checking my dad's laptop, a Compaq Presario F700 (F761US). It has a couple of problems, but the main one is that the DVD drive is not detected by Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. The BIOS doesn't seem to detect it either when I put a bootable disc and try to force it to boot from the drive; it only detects the hard drive.
I have even removed the drive and tested on another machine and it DOES in fact work.
I even upgraded the BIOS to the latest version (F.0.A) to no avail.

Hello MysticalChicken.  I understand you're having some trouble with your CD-ROM.
First, install those service packs!  Those are very important updates.
Have you tried cleaning the inside of the CD-ROM with canned air?
The "whirring/clicking" noise leads me to believe this is a mechanical problem.  The click could very well be the disc touching something while it is spinning at a high speed.  Let me know if cleaning the CD-ROM has any effect on the noise.
Have a wonderful day and I'll keep an eye out for your reply.

Can not start up on my Macbook pro. All I get is a grey spinning wheel. Tried all the Startup key combinations and nothing works. I reset the NVRAM and nothing. I booted with start up disk , ran disk repair and all is ok. Tried to re-install OS but when I get to designating drive its blank. When I go to startup disk there is a "?" mark. When I restart under startup disk search for a drive it still comes up with nothing.  Before I got the grey spinning wheel I had a locked screen. Could not move curser or click on anything. Finally just shut down. Thank you in advance for any help!

Shouldn't still have a 'beachballing'... if the drive is being found and the system is trying to boot from it but is having problems, I would suggest looking over ds store's user tip - Step by step to fix your Mac.
It's likely either something corrupt in your system files or a failing hard drive. But follow ds's steps until you find the cause of the problem.

  • Imac startup disc is full and it won't boot up.  what can I do?

My imac's startup disc is full and it won't boot up...thanks to my daughter uploading a million pictures.  What do I do to fix this?  We do have an external harddrive as well, but things haven't been moved over in a while.

You'll need to have access to another Mac.  Connected the two with a Firewire cable and boot your iMac into Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.  Now you'll have access to your iMac's boot drive where you can download the necessary files to an external HD that is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and then delete from the boot drive to give you a minimum of 10-15 GB of free space.
One can move both your iPhoto and iTunes libraries to the EHD to free up space on the boot drive and run the libraries from there.  However, it must be formatted as I described above.

It's stuck at the restart, all I see is the spinning wheel below the apple logo. And I lost my OSX DVD is there any way to fix this? I just did a software update yesterday and have about 20GB left on my Hard drive. You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:

Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.

  • Could someone from support please post a credible fix for the fact that the Dreamweaver preview feature hasn't worked since FF3.6 came out, and still won't work in FF3.6.10

Ever since FF3.6 came out there has been an issue with the Dreamweaver preview feature. As a result, I uninstalled 3.6 and am hanging out with 3.5.9 until this issue is resolved. Every time a new version of Firefox comes out I do a Google search to see if the issue has been resolved. I just did another search, and as of 9/23/10 with FF3.6.10 this issue is still not resolved. Could Firefox Support please provide a credible article about resolving this issue. People have been posting about it for years, and the only useful advice I have seen is for people to go back to 3.5.9 !?
I am currently working with Mac OS10.4.11, and DW CS3, but I have seen people post about having this issue with Mac OS10.5 and DW CS4 and other configurations, so the problem seems pretty universal.

A Dreamweaver CS user came up with a fix for Dreamweaver: <br />
    http://solutions.marketingmedley.com/
There is a $5.00 fee for that Dreamweaver fix. That website and the fix are not associated with Mozilla in any manner. Support for that fix is provided by that that website via email.

  • Hi guys I'm really in need of some help. I have an IMac I3 for a while now I've been having a problem of my machine refusing it shut down , it goes to a blue screen with a spinning wheel but doesn't shut down.  And now won't boot from install DvD

Please some one help me ...
    A) my mac won't shut down with external HD connected (if it's been used)
    B) there are disk permissions that can't be fixed SUID stuff ..
    C) I have now verified the Mac HD and it tells me it's corrupt in bold red writing and to start up from install DVD
    D) it won't boot from DVD so I cannot run the repair , initially the machine was spitting it out on start up , now it appears to be attempting to boot off DVD , well it sounds like it is .... BUT it's hanging with the Mac Logo and a wheel ... For um .... 30min now...
    E) weirdly when OSX is booted off the hard drive , it won't recognise the Install DvD or the applications one... It just spits them out....
I had an old PPC 17" and it was a beaut .... Never had a single problem with it ...
I bought this one December 2010 and it's been nothing but issues for a computer in excess of £1000 I'm extremely disappointed ... And weirdly the shutting down issue started when it was a week out of warrantee ... I feel conned and am almost at the point of throwing it at a wall and buying a PC

Ok so I've done what you said and this is what it's come back ....
I don't know that these are the errors , but they're the things which don't look right ...
    Throughout the shut down there is a recurring line ;
    It says ;
    Com.apple.launchd 1 0x100600e70.anonymous.unmount 301 PID still valid
    Then there are 2 more which I think are related ;
Com.apple.securityd 29 PID job has I overstayed its welcome , forcing removal.
Then the same with fseventd 48 and diskarbitrationd 13
Oh and on Launchd1 : System : stray anonymous job at shut down : PID 301 PPID13 PGID 13 unmount...
Then the last process says "about to call: reboot (RB_AUTOBOOT).
    Continuing...
    And stops ...
Hope this means something to you ... Thanks again for your help so far :-)

  • Hello, I have a early 2008 Mac Pro and it won't boot even with SL DVD

My Mac Pro (3.0GHz quad core (dual CPUs) 8GB 667 RAM) won't boot. it gets to the grey screen/ Apple logo and hangs on the logo for a few seconds then flashes either the question mark folder icon or on the circle-slash icon () for about half a second then the logo for a few seconds and repeats. It will go into Target Disk Mode (T) but not Diagnostic Mode (D)
Here's what I have done to try to fix it:
    unplugged all peripherals
tried to force DVD boot holding C (checked disc for errors on SL iMac)
removed all HDDs and rebooted holding C, plus a combination of having some in/ some out.
removed first DVD-ROM and used second drive
removed second DVD-ROM and used first drive
    held shift during startup
    held option during startup
    removed graphics card
put HDDs back in with GFX card out, plus combinations
put only the boot drive HDD in (not time machine or 3rd HDD)
put blank HDD in and booted DVD
put mac formatted (used iMac to format) HDD in and booted with DVD
used an G4 USB keyboard again for all of the above
All of this has not worked so I am stuck with what to do. It was all working fine a couple of days ago. At the time it randomly shut down I was trying to use Boot Camp to create a Windows 7 area, but I made sure it was using the 3rd HDD I had put in the machine a couple of days before so it shouldn't be interfering with normal operations. I had also formatted it to NTFS earlier but reformatted it on the Mac Pro to Mac OS Extended - I don't know if this is even relevant.
Any suggestions (except taking it to a Apple repair centre as I can usually fix anything myself!)
    Thanks.

Go to System Profile and look, does it say "MacPro3,1"?
    That is 2008.
FBDIMM would be 800MHz. Did you use older slower 667MHz in yours?
You can but take a hit in performance.
    Sounds like MacPro1,1.
Mac Pro (3.0GHz quad core (dual CPUs) 8GB 667 RAM)
In 2007 March an 8-core 3GHz did come out 2,1.
    So just to be clear.
    ===========
It was all working fine a couple of days ago. At the time it randomly shut down I was trying to use Boot Camp to create a Windows 7 area,
Whenever you want to install Windows, remove all the drives other than the one Windows goes to. And if you use a dedicated drive YOU DO NOT NEED Boot Camp Assist, unless you use XP, which really is limited and crippled (one processor, 1.9GB RAM support).
And when it freezes, your only choice is to nuke (reformat) and restore or get out that backup CLONE you made before (ie, Step #1 in the Boot Camp Guide).
Sure that whole NTFS / MBR / GUID could be an issue, but you should just have a blank drive or clone.
No don't bother Apple, they seem to not have a good sense about Windows on Mac Pro anyway.
Other than zap pram from cold boot / tried booting with NO drives inside and just 10.6. DVD - should be fine.
You should be fine iwth Windows 7 DVD and one drive, or even XP.
Make sure you take your time and reconnect cards etc properly and any cables.
Booting from OS X DVDs may not work if there is a drive with a totally shot directory or partition table. Put them in FW case and turn on AFTER OS X is booted.

  • External Cache Failure reported and computer won't boot

I have a highly upgraded Digital Audio G4 (originally a single processor 533 Mhz, now a Dual 1.2 Mhz). The machine has been running through many ups and downs hangning in there for a while. Basically everything has been upgraded except the motherboard. Normally, this machine runs like a champ and I changed nothing on it when it started behaving erratically. It just sat powered off for a while.
The latest problem ocurred out of the blue:
After being powered completely off for some hours, when I went to boot it back up, everything came on like it normally does (fans, power light, hd's sound like they're running etc.), but it would not boot. My monitor would just go into power save mode and display nothing. When the computer does this, I cannot reset PRAM nor can I boot into Open Firmware. There are no chimes and the PRAM does nothing. My keyboard does not respond to any external stimuli, it will not boot off the original CD. No keyboard input affects the way it boots. It is as though the computer powers on but starts up nothing.
The only thing I have been able to do to get it up and running is to hit the black PMU reset button on the motherboard. If I do this before powering on, then the machine boots up as normal. When I actually shut down and lose power to the motherboard, then later try to reboot, it goes through this process again and again - monitor goes into powersave mode, no PRAM reset abilities, nothing boots, sits powered on only, etc. If I open the case, hit the PMU button, close the case and then restart, the Mac behaves as normal... UNTIL you shut it down and try to power it up, then it goes through this process until the PMU is reset.
First thing I did was replace the battery with a fresh new one that I have. The computer behaves exactly the same. I have tried resetting PRAM when it boots back up, have tried resetting NVRAM when it boots back up. None of this changes the behavior.
I was at a loss with this and tried disconnecting my external devices which did not change the behavior.
The reason I now believe it has something to do with the External Cache is as follows:
I have two versions of Mac OSX on two different drives. In System Profiler, Panther told me nothing was unusual. All devices including RAM seem to be okay. When running System Profiler in Tiger, I found a new item in the list called "Diagnostics".
Under Diagnostics, there was this very perculiar message: "Power On Self Test - Result FAILED, Failure Type - External Cache".
What does this mean? Is there a way to fix this? I am sure that it's related to my problem, but what are viable solutions?
    G4 Dual 1.2 / PB 1.5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   running Tiger & Panther, 1.25 GB RAM

I have narrowed this down to an issue with my 3rd party Gigadesigns CPU upgrade. Though it worked flawlessly for about a year and a half, it now does not like being powered off. Works fine if you leave it on, but to reboot after a power down, the PMU must be reset. PIA! But at least it works. But it fails to get past POST (Power On Startup Tests) without the PMU.
By replacing my original 533Mhz CPU, the power off problem disappeared. Of course, that's not an optimal solution, so now I either keep the machine on all the time or it's PMU time.
Hope this helps someone down the road...

  • 790GX - system freezes and now won't boot

I've been having some problems with my system over the past few weeks which resulted in me RMAing the motherboard, CPU and memory.
The  motherboard was tested, no fault found and returned.
The CPU and memory were replaced with new items.
I rebuilt and installed W7 and all was well for a few days then the system started to randomly freeze.
I suspected a conflict between the on board graphics and W7 so downloaded an updated driver but this did not stop the freezing.
The machine would usually re-boot OK after a freeze but last night the frequency  of freezes increased and it would not re-boot.
This morning it started up Ok but soon froze and again refused to re-boot.
I wondered if the CPU was overheating but the BIOS read 44C which is well within spec.
I only use the machine for surfing and general use and its not been overclocked.
The PSU was replaced a few months ago  - 400w should be OK with only one drive and no graphics card?
Any ideas as to what could be the problem or where I go from here?
    Russ

it could be a failing HD or virus as well. Load in safe mode and check to see if event veiwer has any errors that may narrow down the cause. It could still be a bad/failing power supply as well.
Also work in safemode for a bit and see if it freezes in safemode. But it sounds like you still have a h/w issue.
