Issue Creating Duplicate Database on Different host using RMAN Backup
HI friends..
I m trying to create a duplicate db on different host ....... 27
i have live production db on ............. 15
its up 24*7.
i know how to create dup db using cold backup..but dont know how to create it using RMAN Backup..
I have googled..but getting issues..
Steps Taken till now
Note- I dont have catalog created on live db..
I already have set the tnsnames.ora on both servers
1) Took full backup plus archivelog plus control file on 15
2) moved it to another host..ie 27
3) now on live db..
I conected to rman target /
so i m now connected to prod db
than i try to conect to rman auxiliary sys/sys@dubpd..
But it gives me insufficient privilages error..
Can you tell me what to do next..Coz unless i get into mount phase on sever 27( new server)..i cannot use the control file from backup).my dupdb is up in nomount phase..but what enxt i can do..to restore the control file and than restore the backup after cataloging them to right path..
Thanks in advance frieds...sai121 wrote:
Nope ..on live db..
@comand prompt when i type sqlplus sys/sys@dupdb..
its says 0ra-12518...Listener cannot hand off client connection..
My tns name for live server is..*primary* on live server .. whose ip is 15..(lIVE SERVER).
i also have another entery with tns names- standby .on live server .. whose ip is 27..(other server for duplicated db).
now @command prompt..@live server.. i did sqlplus sys/sys@standby
It gives me ORA-12518
Am i missing something..1- It could be a network problem. You may enable tracing on listener (and examine the logs).
2- Add "DIRECT_HANDOFF_TTC_LISTENER=OFF" to listener.ora, then reload the listener
3- You may want to increase "large_pool_size" -

Cloning using rman backups?
Is it possible to clone using RMAN backups?
How do we do it . Please tell me the steps of configuring.Hi,
Let's take the example to create the auxiliary (clone) database using the rman backup in same server.
1)Building the auxiliary database directory structure
a) datafile, control file, redo file location
b) pfile,bdump,cdump,udump
2) Create the pfile from spfile (if required) and use it for auxiliary database with appropriate modification
3) Make all the necessary changes to your aux1 init.ora file
control_files=….
background_dump_dest=….
user_dump_dest=…
log_archive_dest_1=….
db_name=‘aux1’
instance_name=‘aux1’
remote_login_passwordfile=exclusive
4) Start aux1 instance in nomount mode
ORACLE_SID=aux1
export ORACLE_SID=aux1
sqlplus /nolog
sql>connect / as sysdba
sql> startup nomount pfile=/test/initaux1.ora
5)Configure the listener and tnsname.ora file for auxiliary database. Restart the listener.
lsnrctl>stop
lsnrctl>start
listener.ora entry
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(GLOBAL_DBNAME = AUX1)
(ORACLE_HOME=/ORAHOME1/)
(SID_NAME = AUX1)
TNSNAMES.ORA ENTRY
AUX1 =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = xxx) (PORT = 1521)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID = AUX1)
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
6) Connect to the target and auxiliary instance and run the duplicate command
Rman>connect target /
Rman>connect auxilary sys/password@aux1
RMAN> connect target sys@prod
target database Password:
connected to target database: aaaa (DBID=4199802962)
RMAN> connect auxiliary sys@aux1
auxiliary database Password:
connected to auxiliary database: aux1 (not mounted)

Document for upgrading 8i to 10g using RMAN backup
hi
I need to restore a 8i database on a server and then wanted to upgrade it to 10g.
Is there any good documentation available ?RMAN won't perfom upgrade. You'll have to resotore your database using the Recovery Manager reference manual 8i: http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/A87860_01/doc/server.817/a76990/toc.htm . (Watch out, the above mentioned reference is for RMAN 10g, there were many differences between 8i and 10g, if you try to use 10g syntax on an 8i rman it will partially work or won't work at all)
Install 8i on your target OS.
Restore/Recover with rman 8i your 8i rman backup.
Your rman backup must be located at the same path where it was when you obtained it on your source OS.
Once you have made sure it opens, proceed with upgrade.
Read upgrade guide for an specific upgrade procedure for 8i->10g. -

Whats the difference ( RMAN BACKUP)
Please let me know the diffrence between
1.Alter database begin backup
2. backup database
After my own research all i can find is that Alter database begin backup freeeze the SCN and then we can copy the files from OS level
Where backup database directly create backup set ( backup piece) ..
I would like to know the functional differnce between the two if there is any...
Plus ...doing alter database begin backup ...am i not taking care of logical corruption..
Does alter database being backup does not validate or find out the logical corruption before...
I also came know from a OCA that it just puts in backup mode and dont really pay attention to checking or validating the files...before backin up.
Is that true?
Thanks in advance
Max

I would the functional differnce between the two if there is any...The backup database doesn't need to freeze any headers as RMAN knows how to read the datafiles of oracle. Its knows them very well. So there is nothing we need in the case of rman to check that when the backup was done.

Yes its correct, the commands, alter database begin backup pr backup database doesn't check for any sort of corruptions. Fordoing that, you either need to fire up oS util. DBV for checking the physical corruptions or use RMANs Backup Validate or Backup Validate Check Logical to check for physical/logical corruptions.

Database refresh without using RMAN duplicate
Hi All,
I am planning to refresh my test instance to a PIT using RMAN backups from PROD. I would like to know the process without connecting to PROD database and without using RMAN duplicate command.
Thanks.imran khan wrote:

1) You use nid only to change the dbid.
2) I have done this type of cloning much more than 50 times.
3) As Iordan Iotzov pointed out, in 11gR2 you can run DUPLICATE database without being connected to the PROD
Here is a sample code of how to do it assuming both file system are the same:
# -- RMAN Restore to another server
rman <<EOF2
CONNECT TARGET /;
STARTUP NOMOUNT
SET DBID 987654321;
CONNECT CATALOG rman/rman@rcvcat
RUN {
SET UNTIL SEQUENCE=5678 THREAD=1;
ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch0 DEVICE TYPE DISK;
RESTORE CONTROLFILE;
ALTER DATABASE MOUNT;
RUN
SET UNTIL SEQUENCE=5678 THREAD=1;
ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch0 DEVICE TYPE DISK;
ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch1 DEVICE TYPE DISK;
ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch2 DEVICE TYPE DISK;
ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch3 DEVICE TYPE DISK;
RESTORE DATABASE;
RECOVER DATABASE;
EXIT;

RMAN backup in ORACLE RAC database
Hi there,
We are using RMAN backup strategy for taking backups from one node(eg.node1).Database is RAC database, version 9.2.3. and OS is Solaris 5.10.
this is the configuration which we use, as follows:
Connecting to Prod.Database using catalog database.
rman catalog=rman/rman@CATDB target=sys/oracle@PRODDB(node 2).
RMAN> show all;
RMAN configuration parameters are:
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 30;
CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/rmanback/_%F';
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 5;
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/rmanback/CMWPROD_%s.bak';
CONFIGURE CHANNEL 2 DEVICE TYPE DISK CONNECT 'SYS/oracle@PRODDB(node2)';
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO 7 G;
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle/9.2.3/dbs/snapcf_CMWPROD1.f';
As the above config shows RMAN is connecting to PROD DB (node 2). But we need to take backups (datafiles and as well as archive logs) from two nodes (i.e from node 1 and as well as node 2).
Is there any possibility for taking backups from two nodes?
Thanks,

About RMAN backup !!!!
Dear Friends,
Let my production server running starts from 1st June .
In 15 june , I take the First rman full (or level0) backup using the command :
RMAN> backup database plus archivelog;
In 20 June I take 2nd rman full backup using : RMAN> backup database plus archivelog;
Again in 30 June , I take the Third(3rd) rman full (or level 0) backup using the command :
RMAN> backup database plus archivelog;
And also my rman policy set as :
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1;
In the above scenario , I have the following questions :
1) When I take the Third(3rd) backup then is it the First RMAN backup goes to obsolete as per my rman policy ( RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1) ?
2) Is the above all RMAN backup make a link between them ?
3) If my first RMAN backup goes to obsolete and I have to delete the First RMAN backup , then which types of problem I face ? Can I go to previous state(suppose I need to back in 1st June) of my server if I delete First rman backup ?
4) when I take 3rd rman full backup , then is it all information from 1st january of the server are stored in the 3rd backup ? i.e., is the 3rd rman backup stores all the previous two rman backups information ?so that If I delete the previous two backup , then I get all information form 3rd rman backup .what is the actual scenario ......
plz help me to make clear concept about it .......
thx in advance .....1) When I take the Third(3rd) backup then is it the First RMAN backup goes to obsolete as per my rman policy ( RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1) ?The REDUNDANCY parameter of the CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY command specifies how many backups of each datafile and control file that RMAN should keep. In other words, if the number of backups for a specific datafile or control file exceeds the REDUNDANCY setting, then RMAN considers the extra backups as obsolete.So as in your case the redundancy is 1 so the 1st and 2nd backup are obsolete.
To check the obsolete backups run
rman> report obsolete;
To delete them
rman> delete obsolete;

Is the above all RMAN backup make a link between them ?I am not very much clear with the question.The RMAN information is stored in the controlfile.You can also create a new recovery catalog and register the target database. The RMAN repository records in the control file will be copied to the new recovery catalog.
when I take 3rd rman full backup , then is it all information from 1st january of the server are stored in the 3rd backup ? i.e., is the 3rd rman backup stores all the previous two rman backups information ?so that If I delete the previous two backup , then I get all information form 3rd rman backupThe 3rd RMAN backup will contain all the information of the DB from the very 1st day.You will get all the information in the 3rd rman backup as its a level 0 or what we say a FULL DATABASE BACKUP.If suppose the 3rd rman backup would have been a incremental backup, then you would have required a full backup, previous to the incremental one, so that after restoring the full backup, you restore the incremental to recover the DB completely.

[http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/bkup004.htm#BRBSC133]
Forgot to answer the 3rd question
3) If my first RMAN backup goes to obsolete and I have to delete the First RMAN backup , then which types of problem I face ? Can I go to previous state(suppose I need to back in 1st June) of my server if I delete First rman backup ?well, i am not very much sure , but i think is , if you have the 1st rman backup pieces physically present on the disk, you can catalog it and then use the rman command to restore the data from it of till 1st june.
To catalog the backup pieces use
rman> catalog backuppiece 'filename';

Need to Configure RMAN backup in 8.1.7.4.1
I have been asked to design a backup and recovery strategy for our production and test databases
I got 2003 Enterprise server with 3 disks of each 300gb.
There are 10 databases running in versions 8,9,10 with 5 production and 5 UAT database.
The sum of the Db will be around 70Gb
I got 200Gb free space in 2 disks
how can i design a BACKUP startegy here. I have palnned to use RMAN backups.
Any useful links and proper guiding from you people expected.
Right Now there is only export backup in Night.
I have informed them we are running the Db in risk,.They have asked me to comeup with a plan.
Any help please

Is it possible to backup 8.1.7.4.1 by 10g database.
i can create a recovery catalog in 10g and wil i be able to backup a 8 and 9 Db
>
I have test 10g catalog with 9i. No idea with the 8i.
I guess, 8i(817) is more comportable with 10g and it should work.
Have a try with your test database and also cross check the metrix with different version in the Metalink.
Jaffar
Good news Maran,
I just come across of the following note which explains the RMAN compatibility between 8 - 10g versions.
RMAN Compatibility Oracle8i 8.1.7.4 - Oracle10g 10.1.0.4
Doc ID: Note:307022.1
In case, if you dont have access to metalink, the punch line from the note is :
SUMMARY
=======
Is best practice to use 'rule of thumb'. Always used the target database RMAN executable and the latest release of Oracle for your recovery catalog.
If you are going to use a lower version RMAN executable to backup higher version databases remember you are restricted to only the features available
in the database your using. But the executable you are using must be able to handle the feature or configuration you are using. Case and point the
RMAN-06466 error above where in 9.0.1 there is no concept of "AS BACKUPSET".
Because configure commands were executed some options in the controlfile were not understood when parsed by the lower version RMAN.
